News: Gholston Misses Practice Again
Posted on November 12th, 2009 by Bassett
Gholston missed practice again today due to his hamstring.
It’s going to be interesting watching how this proceeds from here. If he’s genuinely injured, hamstrings can take a while to come back from (just ask Cotchery) so he might be sidelined for a few weeks.
Time to state your case Jamal Westermann & Marques Murrell …

Jamal Westermann looks like he has a little more nfl IQ than Murrel so run with him. Unless its for special teams. Murrel has amazing speed with size.
sorry to go off subject but if i dont ask then it may never be brought up.
has anyone ever seen Schotty go over in-game footage with Sanchez. I want to know if he’s teaching the kid outside of just the playbook. who guiding our franchise. its been a issue for 3 weeks for me.
neither of them can take gholstons role as a 3-4 end og tackle on passing downs
Are people looking at this as an injury? After a bye-week, during a walk-through, a young guy like Gholston? Anything is possible, but I think some serious cynicism is due here. Discourages me about Gholston’s future prospects if this is what Rex wants/needs to do.
As each game slowly goes by, we get closer and closer to Fireman Ed doing a cheer on this guy…
Beee…You….Ess….Tee…. etc.
Oh, but he did occupy two blockers once…so we’ve got THAT going for us….
:-)
Please Vernon, I’m begging you, for the love of God, prove your growing number of critics wrong…
I think this is total spin and a face saving exersise, i think the guy is just not fitted for the NFL and his days are numbered unless rex can bulk him up and move him to DE or something
He is only 24, the age of some guys in last year’s draft. Hard to believe with his speed and size, he can’t play somewhere. Thought Rex could find the magic potion, but clearly not yet.
in fact, he’s 23.
my perfect weekend:
philly beats san diego
pittsburg beats cincy ( see conf. rec )
indy beats n.e
and of course jets win
and if i really want to get nuts……cleveland GULP! beats the ravens
If anybody watched Gholston in college they would have saw that he lacked intensity and got almost all of his sacks on a bull rush and speed to the outside.
He was not fluid and lacked instincts then. Again for the record I didnt like him but thought he could be coached up and didnt object the draft choice especially if we couldnt move down from #6.
I am not a VG basher. I just dont see this guy caring all that much and putting in the work to be a better football player.
Its time to take off the kid gloves with him. If he cant contribute then do not activate him
Considering the trouble they got in for false injury reports before and bearing in mind that when we’ve questioned the jets about injuries before they’ve proved to be genuine (Stuckey, Vilma, Woodhead), I’m going to suggest the unthinkable…maybe he’s genuinely hurt – and maybe that’s why his reps were down the last two weeks.
Keep dreaming John L
The Indy, Philly and Pitt are tough wins, and and you are nuts about the Browns beating the Ravens
Well the chances of the Jets winning just increased with him on the sidelines.
Gholston will be hurt the rest of the year, and then released as soon as it is official that it is an uncapped 2010, so they can absorb the hit without implications. They will brush it under the Mangini carpet, which will be a lot easier to do when he is fired by Cleveland. We’ll move on.
Tell Vernon when his hamstring heals the jet cheerleaders have a spot for him on the squad. He has to earn his money somehow. Now at least all the talk of his body might finally be appreciated!! HAHA
Joe
Are you sure, he might take plays off, and nobody likes a on/off Cheerleader.
who knows? ….Look how long it took Bryan Thomas to become a solid player. maybe we just have to give Gholston another year under coach Ryan and maybe, hopefully the light will turn on and he’ll become …at least a solid player? who know? he sure shows no instincts or movement skills ….. will he ever develop either? hope so, for our sake as Jets fans, cause we are stuck with him for the year …at least
All Im saying Is if VG can get some fire and learn some moves he will be the Pass Rusher we are missing.
He gets at the QB now he is just a 1 step or 2 away from sacks.
BUT Thats the question can he learn the moves, Can he get that fire.
Green..if he does not have fire by now he never will. He was a waste of a pick and may GM’s knew it from the outstart. Another Buckeye over rated!!!
Send him back to Ohio/Cleveland. One way pass free of charge. I said it before and will say it again. He took the money and ran. He is nothing and could give 2 ****$ about playing..
Even if 2010 is uncapped his cap penalty would carry over to the next capped year, which would most likely be 2011.
hey bent or annyone how much is bryan thomas making this year and also thomas Jones anyone know
Thomas counts $3.75mil against the cap and Jones counts $2.5mil
It still surprises me how a team like Buffalo can be a team much more talented like the jets with more hype and galore and still lose to a team like the Browns WITHOUT AN OFFENSE. THE OFFENSE DIDN’T PLAY THE BILLS AND THE BROWNS STILL WON. THEIR ONLY WIN OF THE SEASON!! It still amazes me.
http://www.nyjetscap.com is great for jets salary cap info, btw.
correction:
A team like Buffalo can beat a team much more talented (with half an offense)
For everyone who was praying for Hay Cutler, well the golden boy just had a Mark Sanchez day with 5 int’s. I’ll take the rook who has a chance to get better from here. Thank God they didn’t get that guy.
Vernon didn’t start playing football until his sophmore year of highschool. They tried him at LB but he had trouble learning the plays and they made him an Offensive lineman. He got hurt his junior year and then played LB in his senior year. recruited as a LB for Ohio they then turned him into a DE. barely played as a true freshman, got hurt in sophmore year and was redshirted. The follwoing year redshirt sophmore, he flourished as a LB and had a big year as a junior. Then he entered the NFL.
So he’s only started playing footbal in 2001 (8 years ago). He was hurt for two of those years. So in his life he’s played a total 6 seasons of football not including this season. He’s was with three different coaching staffs (highschool, college, Mangini) Rex Ryan is his fourth headcoach. He started as an OL then LB then DE and back to LB. In his two years in the NFL he’s been in two different defensive systems.
I think he deserves this season as his adjustment period and then lets see what he can do next year. I think he is a slow learner with alot of potential. If his head is in the right place I would expect to see big improvements next year.
Most of these guys have been playing ball since they were 7 years old. Lets give this guy some time to learn the game. His biggest problem is that he got too good to quickly and got drafted too high because he excelled at the combine.
Hey Joe,
Vernon Gholston wouldn’t even cut it as a Flight Attendant.
Johnny Hector thanks for the level head.
While I am not thrilled with Gholston’s performance, how many people remember Bryan Thomas’s second year? If I remember correctly not only was he ineffective, he developed an eating disorder and shed something like 20 lbs while riding the pine.
He seemed to work out fine after that.
If you guys want to throw Gholston under the bus a la Hugh Douglas and Jonathan Vilma, I say your nuts!
Vernon was a bust from the introduction of him being our 1st pick. Cut our losses now. Why pay that much for 3rd rate.
“Even if 2010 is uncapped his cap penalty would carry over to the next capped year, which would most likely be 2011.”
Note: we think that’s the case, but there are conflicting reports on it. There should definitely be no acceleration of signing bonuses in an uncapped year, but the Jets haven’t paid Gholston all of his guaranteed money yet. I think there will be a penalty in 2011 (ie, they won’t avoid the dead money altogether), but it will at least be reduced by the cap charge that would arise in 2010. Whether they can increase that by advancing him money, I’m not sure.
It’s not great business to have a huge chunk of dead money in a year when you are trying to maximise resources to get deep into the postseason, so the Jets still might be better off retaining him, even if his contribution is nothing like what they envisaged when they drafted him.
This Sunday when the Jets face the Jaguars they will be feeling the loss of Kris Jenkins more than any game this season. The jaguars offensive line and Maurice Jones Drew run very well when it comes to smashmouth football. Scott’s role will be crucial in this game. From Sunday’s game we can determine how strong the jets run defense is. If Harris is the only player getting tackles in the middle like he has been doing for several weeks now then Scott is a weak link. Scott was brought to the jets to help them contain the run. It was an piece missing from the jets for some time. If he cannot prove himself in this game then he can talk all he wants but he will be a below average linebacker in this league until he retires. Even an average linebacker must be able to get himself in the gameplan and help shut down the run.
“If Harris is the only player getting tackles in the middle like he has been doing for several weeks now then Scott is a weak link.”
I strongly disagree. Scott’s key role as the primary TED linebacker is to occupy blockers and enable the MIKE to play in space. If the Jets stop the run, then that means Scott probably did his job (especially if Harris makes a lot of plays), even if he ends up with zero tackles.
fonzie,
I would say Miami was a much bigger challenge in our post-Jenkins era than Jax. Miami mauled our front 7 in the Monday Night game, with Jenkins still playing, and then the next time they played we absolutely stopped their running game. Yes, you can point to the fact they had 3 scores without having to drive, taking away from their possessions and rushing totals, but their two headed RB monster rushed 19 times for 54 yards (2.8 yards per carry). And it was evident that the game in Miami was more of an anomaly than anything else because the D-line owned the line of scrimmage and we were constantly in the backfield.
Either way, this will be another good test with a powerful RB. And once again your assessment on Scott’s role and ability is way off base.
Its till confuses me when people question B Scott and K Rhodes.
I know they talk alot but the defense is the strongest it has been for this franchise in years but fans still whine about certain players??
B Scott has done exactly what he was brought here to do and last game when we played more 4-3 he had a huge sack late in the game…..j
Been calling it from day 1 – Ghostman is a bust and I can’t believe we wasted a damn #6 pick on him… Can’t afford to blow that high a pick, even Robertson paid some dividends, but Ghostman is def in the discussion for worst top 6 pick in recent drafts… he’s that bad…
And please stop the but-he’s-only-23 and give-him-a-chance talk. B.U.S.T.
Dan,
Jamarcus Russel? Vernon Davis’ light didn’t go on until this year. Vince Young is still not fully developed.
Fact is there are some players who take longer to develop than others (both Young & Davis were physical beasts who needed years to develop their NFL skill sets). It’s still too early to write off Gholston.
