Secondary Wants to Step It Up

Although the secondary is among the league’s best right now, they’re still looking to improve what they can do to help out this team.

Earlier this week, the Jets’ secondary held what Darrelle Revis described as a “serious talk” about the unit’s goals for the second half of the season. The gist of the discussion was this: We need more interceptions.

According to Revis, secondary coach Dennis Thurman started the discussion. Revis spoke. So did Kerry Rhodes. And Lito Sheppard. And Jim Leonhard. Basically, the starters.

When Jon Gruden (A.K.A. “THIS GUY!!!”) moved to Tampa to coach the Bucs, he challenged the defense in that first year to get ten returns for touchdown on defense and if they did, they’d go to the Super Bowl. This sort reminds me of that. The Jets secondary is clearly a good coverage unit and they are able to make teams go three and out regularly, but they need to start winning the turnover battle and they feel like this defense plays right into their ability to make picks.

  1. Eric Smith this is where you need to step up and push rhodes over somehow or you might just be a special teams player and reserve role player on defense for the rest of your career.

  2. Haha, wow, your hatred for all things Rhodes is so blinding you don’t even see how ridiculous the things you’re writing are. Eric Smith covers about 1/2 the ground Rhodes does in coverage (literally) and is a strong safety, not a free safety. You are so wrong and delusional it defies description.

  3. If you put mopre pressure on teh QB you can get more interceptions. You cannot take chances w/o pressure. Right now the other team can go long and you dont want to get beat deep. But with teh Jags you can take chances. There passing game is mediocre at best. If you have safety help go for it. And go for it often!!!

  4. Ints is mostly skill and anticipation, the jets follow the game plan like robots . no one frelance. the jets mostly havent been getting those ints because the LBs let things in on inside and under the safeties. revis when he does get beat ,its when a WR runs a inside slant. why is that?

  5. I’m with Jose. If the Jets had a better pass rush, QBs would be forced to throw in coverage more or would make errant throws. It’s all about the pass rush, not the coverage.

  6. The Jets secondary is fine…. Here is my fear:

These guys Revis, Rhodes etc… start taking chances because they feel they need to make plays for us to win games.

The defense is great and should have won us 6 games already.

Dont change anything. Just keep winning that side of the ball and when the offense gets consistent ( and we stop giving up Ginn returns for TD’s) WE WIN!!!

  7. Agreed Drew. I think this is an “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” situation. A lot of time you guys start going for the interception, missing, and allowing a huge play as a result. The secondary has rarely allowed that huge play, so why change things now and open the door for them?
