Film Room: Jaguars 24 – Jets 21 Highlights from 11/15/2009

Highlights of the Jets and Jaguars game from yesterday. My notes from watching the highlights:

First Sanchez INT — I equally blame the play call and the quarterback. The play call asks for Sanchez to roll left, the more awkward way for a righty to roll and throw. Watch the play and note Sanchez not setting or even throwing on the downbeat of his right foot (which leads to a lobbed pass). Yes, there was a rusher coming at him and he had to hurry, but Cotchery has already beaten Mathis, the covering corner and a pass five more yards downfield is a touchdown. As it is, Sanchez lobs the pass, it hangs up inside (unforgivable) where there are two defenders. I credit Schottenheimer for his stones in trying that, but risking so big so early against a team that was evenly matched and who deferred seems foolish to me. Bad call and bad execution by both Schotty and Sanchez.

MJD Touchdown — At this point, I knew the Jets would lose the game as I recalled what Accuscore predicted. The Jets inability to not only contain but to rightly tackle MJD was extremely troubling. The announcers were talking about how well Jones-Drew ran inside, and he did, but if Jenkins was present, there would have been a substantial difference in how well the Jets could have contained him. This was another Miami Monday Night game … the Jets knew what they had to do defensively and had two weeks to prep for Jones-Drew, but in their wisdom decided to take a week off. Look how that turned out.

Crisp Sanchez — When Sanchez looks good, he looks really good. I do like how Schottenheimer conducts his offense, and I think it can lend to Sanchez’s strengths as you saw on that Cotchery TD. I’ll get back to Schotty in a minute. It’s good to see him battling back from adversity and I have to remind myself that he’s a rookie and stands to get a good deal better, but when the wheels come off for him it gets ugly quickly. I like what I’ve seen so far, and since the Bills game, I’ve been looking for progress from him and I’ve seen enough to make me happy, but I’ve also seen enough to know that I’m watching for 2010, and have been for weeks now.

One of the biggest strengths of Manning and Brady’s career is that even if the offense has changed as their personnel and abilities have changed, they’ve had a steady rudder during their formative years (Tom Moore in Indy, Charlie Weis in NE). I don’t see the same holding true in New York. One way or another Schottenheimer will be ousted or will take a job elsewhere.

Pressure Under Pressure — The Jets are supposed to be a team built to slobberknock the QB. Some days I agree with that, others, I don’t. Yesterday was one of those days where the Jets couldn’t get to the QB. 2 Sacks and only 6 registered QB Hits isn’t what you want to see from the Jets against David Garrard.

Cover Corner — The Jets had trouble deciding where to use Darrelle Revis and it cost them. Sheppard and Lowery struggled with their charges and whoever they moved Revis to was silent, but the other corners we’ren’t pulling their weight in the end.

This is What it Sounds Like, When the Dogs Cry — Braylon Edwards made some insane catches, but the lob to the breadbasket for the two pointer was crushing. Know I know how Cleveland fans felt. Still he’s a fantastic talent, and Sanchez probably should have put some more mustard (haha) on the ball.

The Real Backbreaker — With five minutes left, a complement of timeouts and the ball on the seventeen, I thought that the Jaguars would play their game and run the ball as much as they could. Look at the plays that led to the two-minute warning, and subsequent Jets “freeway” plays.

Jacksonville Jaguars at 5:04, (1st play from scrimmage 4:56)
1-10-JAX 17 (4:56) Pass incomplete deep left to M.Sims-Walker.
2-10-JAX 17 (4:50) Pass short left to M.Sims-Walker to JAX 26 for 9 yards (K.Rhodes, D.Harris).
3-1-JAX 26 (4:06) Pass short left to Z.Miller pushed ob at JAX 37 for 11 yards (D.Revis).
1-10-JAX 37 (4:00) M.Jones-Drew left guard to JAX 38 for 1 yard (M.Devito, D.Harris).
2-9-JAX 38 (3:21) Pass incomplete deep right to M.Sims-Walker.
3-9-JAX 38 (3:14) (Shotgun) Pass short middle to M.Thomas to NYJ 47 for 15 yards (D.Strickland).
1-10-NYJ 47 (2:34) #78 Black reports eligible. Pass deep middle to M.Lewis to NYJ 14 for 33 yards (K.Rhodes).

Passes. Didn’t this pass defense get together and have a pow-wow about how they were going to up their game this week? The killer was the 33 yard play that came down to miscommunication between Leonhard and Rhodes, it sounds like, but you have to wonder how Marcedes Lewis gets so free down the seam of the defense.

  1. Kerry Rhodes is responsible for the play at 1:35 and 3:50

How come the fumble by Edwards isn’t in the highlights….that was a big play in the game.

Jay Feely is having an amazing season kicking FG’s.

The drop on the 2 point conversion is inexcusable.

  2. As someone stated in another thread, they would’ve been better off if Rhodes had allowed them to score on the pass down the middle. Would’ve had about 2:20, the 2 minute warning and a time out to score a TD to win.

  3. Rhodes did lose the game with that missed assignment. If he covered the TE there wouldnt have been a huge gain and the D could have kept it to a FG.

All year Rhodes has been yapping and yapping. In the beginning of the reason he compared to himself to Ed Reed. Before the home game against the Dolphins, he started flapping his jaw to Joey Porter which was just stupid.

The Ted Ginn deep TD play was also his fault for not adjusting. Now Im not saying he is the sole reason for the Jets record but he has been terrible this season and has been very mistake prone. Sanchez has been too but he is a rookie, not a veteran like Rhodes is supposed to be. The late throw to Braylon for the 2pt conversion also put them in the situation that they were in but Rhodes SHOULD have made that play on the TE. Leonhard was screaming at him to adjust.

Jets are screwed next week, theres no chance the Patriots are gonna let them walk into their house and get win after the misscalled 4th & 2 play from last nights game.

Start looking forward to next season everyone because the Jets are D-O-N-E!

  4. i just hope we either make the playoffs or tank it. i cant take the fool me stuff, and the jets fooled me twice.

  5. As big as the 33 yarder was, the play before, the 15 yard completion on 3rd and 9 was just as big. Considering that they were only down by one, where they were on the field, their own 38, and the fact that they had 3 timeouts left, the Jags might’ve punted at 4th and 9 with a little over 3 minutes left in the game. If they Jets had stopped them on third, they could’ve had the opportunity to run out the clock.

  6. I think that at the end of the day IF Sanchez doesn’t throw an interception than we win most of the games we play.

Schotty should be calling plays to minimize turnovers and not being so “creative”. I generally like creative but there is a reason why the ravens went to the playoffs last year by only letting Flacco make a handful of different throws in his rookie year.

  7. Coming out flat after the bye week is inexcusable. Every week it’s something else: failure to tackle, jumping off sides on a key play, missing an assignment, etc.

What is all comes down to is DESIRE. The desire to win creates the FIRE that we haven’t seen since the loss to the Saints.

That’s what Edwards was saying, but in different words. This seasons done, but Ryan has to kick major butt to show what type of team he will take into next season and the seasons beyond.

  8. Ronnie,

How is Rhodes responsible for Garrard’s rushing TD? He was blitzing off the edge, it is the D-line’s responsibility to hold their ground and not give Garrard any running lanes. If you want to blame someone, blame David Harris who got swallowed up and let Garrard take off.

Look, we’re all mad but people are making Rhodes out to be the scapegoat for a unit that failed across the board. He didn’t have a particularly good game, but aside from that one play at the end he didn’t have a particularly bad one, either. It was Leonhard who missed a tackle on MJD’s 33 yard TD and Lito missing a tackle on Sims-Walker’s TD, but all we hear about is how Rhodes lost the game. The entire team lost that game, as every unit made it’s fair share of mistakes.

  9. Brendan,

As i wrote last week, the problem with Rhodes is his mouth, just shut up and make plays.

  10. Not arguing that he needs to tone it down, but the constant scapegoating is getting out of hand.

  11. Brendan,

    W’s cure all!

  12. Couldn’t agree more. And (as ridiculously slim as it is) we still have a chance, and as the Phins showed last year, anything’s possible. Get to work this week and come out firing on Sunday and we’ll see the kind of heart and fortitude this team has. A weak showing on Sunday (not score-wise, but in terms of effort and execution) and that’s when the pitchforks, torches and angry mobs will come out in full force.

  13. Brendan,

It’s because people go into the game with their preconceived narratives. If they lose, it will be Schotty’s fault or Rhodes fault or so and so’s fault. They then shoehorn the facts of the game to fit their narrative. Sanchez throws an interception on the first play of the game. Schotty’s fault. That’s why they loss.

Met fans constantly do the same thing. It seems, in many commenters minds, every loss was always the fault of either Castillo, Tatis, Wright or Jerry Manuel no matter what the reality of the game might show.

  14. KD,

Hah wow, speaking to a Mets fan, you surely hit that one on the head. Mets fans seem to neglect the fact that Castillo had a very good season. And I completely agree with the same thing happening for the Jets. Although, on the Jets’ first play where Sanchez threw the INT, I do blame Schotty for calling the rollout to the side that Sanchez would be forced to throw across his body. However, in my opinion this game was lost by the entire team, not a handful of players/coaches.

  15. Brendan,

For me, as long as the game is entertaining I am satisfied, of course I would like a win, but I enjoy competetive football. At least we are not getting blown out and we have been in pretty much every game into the 4th qtr.
The biggest problem with this franchise is the constant changing of coaches/philosophy, every couple of years a new guy comes in and brings “his” guys, the teams that are always good have a stable front office.

  16. “every couple of years a new guy comes in and brings “his” guys, the teams that are always good have a stable front office.”

“every couple of years a new guy comes in and brings “his” guys, the teams that are always good have a stable front office.”

“every couple of years a new guy comes in and brings “his” guys, the teams that are always good have a stable front office.”

I wish I could print these out as posters and mail them to everyone calling for Rex’s head right now. We are NINE games into his head-coaching career, and already fans are calling for the axe. It’s mind boggling, really. Let the guy build the franchise to his liking and in a few years see where the dust settles.

  17. Brendan,

Exactly, if you can build a base of quality players, over time we can get to the next level, but when you trade away quality because a new coach does not think the guy fits in his system you become………The Jets.

  18. It’s like Jets fans can’t wait to complain and get someone removed, only to bring in the new guy and do the same thing. Calm down people, Rex may have been around football his entire life, but he doesn’t have the experience as a HC so give him, oh I don’t know, a full season before we call for his head (I’m also being sarcastic in that statement, HC’s need more than just one season to show who they really are, and this goes for HC’s that perform incredibly their first year, or poorly).

  19. It’s like the screaming for Cowher. Cowher would’ve never lasted 15 seasons here and had a chance to win a Super Bowl in his 14th season as a Head Coach. Looking at his record, they would’ve wanted him out of here by year 8 after he’d loss some big home playoff games and had had three straight non playoff seasons.

  20. Brendan/KD/Cabras…

are you guys talking about the NY media or about fans? Because I really can’t tell them apart anymore.

  21. A large percentage of Jets (and Mets) fans just want to be carbon copies of Joe Beningo.

It really bothers me to bash the Phillies and Pats for their awful fans and then to take a look around me and realize the bipolar mess of a fanbase we have here. I mean, I think that we by far have a more dedicated fanbase in that we do stick through it, thick and thin.

However, it seems like that constant dedication and passion has transformed New York fans into a venomous beast that needs to take its sedatives or else hell will certainly break loose… And unfortunately, it’s usually the trainer with the needed drugs that gets eaten alive.

  22. Starz,

    EXACTLY! Patience is a virtue.

  23. wow that dropped 2 point conversion was absolutely huge. i did not have a good view of it at the stadium but realize now after watching the replay. edwards should not have jumped for that ball. it was eye level. he should have caught the ball with his hands and immediately fallen to the ground. i have no idea why he chose to jump so high to catch a ball that was 5 feet off the ground.

that being said, sanchez could have made a better pass

  24. Brendan,

I know I am using Rhodes as a scapegoat in my comments but the guy has been a huge disappointment this season. I think youre spot on for saying he needs to speak with his play and not his mouth but look at the job that Leonhard and Rhodes have done so far and compare the two.

Whomever is calling for Ryan to get fired is an idiot, look at the situation in Washington and see how the constant change has affected the franchise.

Honestly I thin the 3-0 start raised everyones expectation level to an obscene high. Now that the team is showing inconsistencies everyone is looking for a head to put on the block. I think cabras is right when he says: “W’s cure all!” Once the team starts winning the fires will be put out.

  25. After watching this tape I realized how awful our pass rush is. We are getting no production from our OLB’s or DE’s and until we do teams are gonna be able to throw all over us. There is no reason why David Garrard should have that much pocket with a defense as good as ours. Its disappointing because this team has so much talent, I just don’t think they’re all hungry.
