Sanchez’s Interesting Postgame Presser
Just an interesting note on how Sanchez addressed yesterday’s press conference.
Repeatedly looking down at notes he had written as if they were a quarterback cheat-sheet bracelet on his forearm, Sanchez discussed situations during the Jets’ 24-22 loss to the Jaguars in rapid-fire sequence like an auctioneer.
From the two interceptions he threw to the team’s final offensive drive that ended in a touchdown, Sanchez blamed himself for poor play, credited himself for battling back and praised the play of his wide receivers, offensive line and even the play-calling by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
“I’ve got a couple of things to say real quick,” Sanchez said to get things going. “This should hit on everything. (There) are just some things I’m thinking here real quick. We’ll change it up. OK?”
Sounds like he didn’t want to take all that many questions and was trying to beat the reporters to the punch. I’m not sure how this plays long-term, but I think it’s more a sign of internal frustrations from the QB than anything else. Still, I’m not worried about him going Ryan Leaf or anything like that.

it’s a total embarrassment. he is showing incredible amount of immaturity.
ugh i heard the talking heads of radio blasting him for it. Really? he obviously didnt want to talk but wanted to give a little bit to the media in order to not be a d*ck. Why is he getting blasted for it? he took it on himself for the early pick and 2 point conversion. People are making waaaay too big a deal. Guess who? the media of course. Gotta have their NY story for the backpage when the Giants are off.
Now THIS is a story.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5O8V0DjIi0
Here we go…
People need to relax. If anything, this just shows he cares so much that he doesn’t want to have to relive the loss. I want people that care like he does. He wants so badly to perform perfectly for this team and its fans that he holds himself to a higher standard than even us insane NY fans do. People will lump this in with the hotdog, 5 INT game and say he wasn’t ready for the NFL, but the fact is he’s a professional who spends countless hours working by himself and with his receivers to get better, to learn and to improve his team. That’s what we should care about, not how much he does or doesn’t address the media.
I agree with Mark. If you saw it, it was very immature and impulsive. He needs a talking to and should not repeat that. Sanchez is a very smart kid and should realize it is in his interest, as well as the team’s, to nurture good relations with the media.
he tried to tell the media that they won’t need to ask him any questions because he is covering it all by himself. is he out of his mind? he better grow up and try to win some games before he is run out of this town very quickly.
wow people need to calm down. a total embarrassment? an incredible amount of immaturity? for what, for saying “this should hit on everything”?
I generally don’t over react to situations that an addition of one more sentence could solve – such as “then I’ll take your questions” or “here’s some issues i saw from myself in the game”. And this guy hasn’t tweeted anything meaningful/newsworthy since the Draft day. I think that shows smarts and maturity right there that others don’t have (i.e. Kerry Rhodes).
This criticism is just laughable and absurd and shows an incredible amount of impatience for a football team.
thanks jetfaninla.
Cmon guys! im mad about the loss too, but please dont get swept up by yellow journalism. Im not saying this move was brilliant but please put it in perspective. The hot dog too. So what! East as many hot dogs as you want and script all your responses for the rest of your career Sanchez, as long as you throw touchdowns.
How did he have time to write a speech?
It was just weird.
I think the pressures of being a NFL quarterback in NY are finally getting to him.
He seems so tense and defensive.
You can even see it when he’s in the pocket.
He jumping around like a jackrabbit.
Someone needs to sit down with him and say its okay. You’re a rookie quarterback, it;s going to be hard.
I think the pressures that Rex Ryan keeps putting out there saying they are a playoff caliber team is giving Sanchez an unfair amount of pressure.
And the result is things like this happening.
It was embarrassing. But our athletes in this town have done far worse. I thought Bart Scott’s post game interview after the Dolphins game was worse. Neither were really bad.
Just another sign, Rex and the Jets management are losing control. Everyone just goes off with the mouth.
Someone should be mentoring these young guys before they go in front the Press. Especially in NY.
Remember the jets are always treated worse then the jets. They make a bigger deal of a hot dog then eli forcing a trade on draft can tou imagine if that was a jet.
Meant giants not jets
This kid is a good kid and a good QB. Lets not overreact here.
Does anyone remember when Pennington (who is the ultimate professional) laid into the media for it being a prevlidge to cover the Jets a few years ago?
The kid is frustrated and will learn from these tough losses. The last thing I am worried about is his personality with the media.
He undeservedly accepted blame that falls squarely on the defense. That shows leadership and maturity. He didn’t come out with the load of bollocks that Kerry Rhodes said or Bart Scott’s big-mouth BS after the Miami game. The big deal is that he cut off jack@sses like Gary Myers and Steve Serby? Please. The news media is upset that he doesn’t shoot himself in the leg or rack up DUIs.
yawn…this is a non-issue.
If the NY-media was mad about this then it sounds like Sanchez won this battle..
Exactly what I was thinking, Brian. (Sounds like he didn’t want to take all that many questions and was trying to beat the reporters to the punch.)
I think he’s a rookie QB thats had some ups and downs but overall the team has been in every game. I think every loss can be blamed on one unit. Saints=Offense, Miami part 1= Defense, Buffalo=Special Teams, Miami part 2= Special Teams, and Jags=Defense. When Rex started this era I put the defense as its strengh, but as of lately they can’t stop anyone when it counts. After sunday there are four loses in the forth quarter. It seems the assumed strengh of this team as become a weakness.
Why is this even a story, god I hate the F’n media in New York.
You can’t expect a guy to at his best and willing to answer any stupid obvious questions from these PARASITES after what happened after the game.
When these people right about what is wrong with this team, they need to take a good look in the mirror.
People here should not be commenting on it- saying that it’s NOT a story- if they did not actually SEE it.
He completely showed how immature he still is, and displayed a complete disrespect to the media and fans.
This was not a “i’m taking the blame, covering the game by myself.” He RUSHED out of there, said that he didnt know HOW the media could possibly have any questions, and tried to ignore a couple questions at the end. Sanchez was out there for a complete 3:13 seconds it seemed and then ran off.
You need to be the same person after a win and after a loss. Frustrated, fine. Just don’t be disrespectful. This Belicheck post-lost-superbowl-ish.
Please don’t mention Ryan Leaf and him in the same posts, it gets me paranoid.
i understand a frustration about the game and the media- but you do not respond in this way.
Come On guys. He is a rookie QB!!! Do you think it was easy for him to bring the team back only to lose the game??? He was obviously frustrated and needed to just get his thoughts out. HE IS A ROOKIE! If he was a vet it would be a big deal but come on…he is a rookie who was being fed to the media sharks…so he swam to shore a lil early…i believe its not a big deal.
Eddie,
I disagree. I would be mad at him if he was all smiles and “it’s just a game” after a loss like that. He’s pissed, he is taking blame for the loss (when he doesn’t have to) and doesn’t want to deal with the NY Media and their constant second guessing. I can’t say that I blame him.
It is an issue and absolutely was a sign of immaturity and not being very aware of where he is. I love the kid, but everyone spoke of his NY media savvy which I though he’d shown. This was stupid. The reporters have a job to do and as part of his job, he needs to be available and answer the questions posed to him. Players don’t get to right answers to canned questions prior to them being asked…it’s not how the process works. I’m hopeful that a veteran player pulled him aside and explained this to him.
Who cares how the process works? These reporters are already too privileged as it is and I’m sure Mark knows that they’ll twist words any way they please. I don’t care if he doesn’t talk to them. I believe someone alluded to it before, but even Golden Boy Chad Pennington ripped the Media before. Give it a rest everyone, this is something stupid to worry about.
Seems so bad for him. My buddy saw him swaggering into Del Frisco’s last night for an expensive steak dinner. He must have been real upset
He is a rookie, who has been taking the blame for games he didn’t have to. Granted hes made mistakes that had me almost ripping my LCD off my wall, but he got the team back into the game. He is still a man who gets sick and tired of answering the same questions and taking the blame. If I were still playing i’d take the defense out back beat em and then put them in front of the mic.
I’ll re-post what I wrote in the Game Recap thread:
Who the hell does Sanchez think he is with that press conference speech and ‘you shouldn’t have any questions’ remark? Listen, I like the kid a lot, it’s clear that he’s going to be a very good quarterback and he has a lot of heart, but he’s as immature as any player the Jets have had in my lifetime. That was flippin’ inexcusable in the press room. If I were one of the reporters, I would’ve walked up to him and punched him in the face. Rex or Tanny or whoever the hell has any authority in Florham Park needs to sit him down and bring him back to earth. He’s got the physical tools to be a terrific QB, but he has A LOT of growing up to do, FAST. He’s cracking, and this is far from as bad as the media can get.
The problem with sports these days is it became news. I used to like the old days when you waited for a 3 minute sports update instead of 24/7 of talking heads who do not really know much more than the
fans.
Serby was thrown into the pool at the old Jets facility in Hofstra in the early 80’s, once a jerk, always a jerk.
Peter King (another blah, blah blah writer) wrote about the pregame coverage increasing 550% in the past 10-15 years.
Unfortunately the writers create stories, rather than report on stories.
Joe B,
With all due respect, the kid turned 23 years old like a week ago. Of course he’s still immature!
Why is it okay for him to make young rookie mistakes on the field, but not to the press?
The wrinkles will be ironed out, one way or another.
He is cracking because of stupid fans like you who have nothing but bad thing to always say about the Jets. The media too.
He lost a damn game, immature because he didn’t want to talk about the lose to a$$holes who rib at people to try to make them crack?
Joe B, your a fool. He is 23 yrs, he is a rookie, and he shouldn’t have to speak to the media if he doesn’t want too. The media is supposed to “report” not have everyone write the same damn thing about the kid.
I hate this damn world and its media, our society has become completely and utterly whack as hell. The Media has wayy to much control over our sports.
I’m sorry, but not all 23-year-olds are this petty and immature. I understand that this is a learning process, but the kid is getting a little too arrogant for someone who hasn’t proven anything in this league yet. I don’t care what you think of the media, you don’t do what he did yesterday when you’re a rookie with a million turnovers who pees the bed in cold weather. He thinks he has the stripes already and doesn’t like being questioned. Too bad kid, you signed up for this, now do your job on and off the field.
Just because I’m sure the clowns who didn’t read my original post will gloss over this again, I LIKE SANCHEZ A LOT AND AM EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE WITH HIM AT THE HELM. But he needs an attitude check and if you can’t see that, I don’t know what you’ve been watching.
What I saw in this game was a 23 year old rookie QB lead his team down the field for a go ahead TD with 5 minutes left in the 4th Qtr. I also saw him throw a ball that should have been caught on a clutch 2 pt conversion.
That’s what I’m focused on.
The only thing that would concern me in a post game interview after a loss would be a lack of caring or a “me first” attitude.
This post game interview bull*^($ is a fabrication of the modern media. Who cares what he did minutes after a frustrating loss that cost this team a shot at the playoffs. Especially considering he took the blame for a game he did not lose. Pathetic that anyone is even talking about it. Spend your time killing Ryan for his crappy defensive calls on the last drive.
i watched it on jets post game live. to be honest, i really didnt think it was that big a deal.
Well obviously the media, not just the aforementioned, believes it was a big deal and in NY that means it IS a big deal.
They are killing him on the radio, every station. Not good.
WOJF,
That’s because those radio hosts consider themselves kin to the sports writers. They’re all vultures for the most part and I don’t see this being a big deal. Of course they’ll talk about it, and analyze his post-games from now on, but I could give a flying who-ha about anything but him playing well on the field and staying out of trouble off of it. This doesn’t count as trouble.
A free media is what makes a democracy great.
Anyway, Sanchez needs to stop making himself look like a jack **S.
Yeah and Namath would have looked like a big jack**S if they hadn’t won game.
Its about what you do on the field that matters, remember how Eli Manning’s body language and laid back attitude was going to stop him from winning a super bowl. The NY media was all over that one too a few years ago.
Bottom line, Sanchez’s play and numbers thus far compare favorably to a lot of great QBs that started their rookie years and he has lead a few 4th Qtr comebacks which is what matters most.
For all I care he could ask Suzy Kolber to kiss him after the next game as long as ends up being a franchise QB ON THE FIELD !!!!
Joe B,
Who cares what any of these players have to say? I just want to watch them play. I could care less if they could talk at all, just play and win. If you watched the game, what difference does it make if you hear an answer to a usually stupid question?
When I heard Sanchez deliver his post game speech, I was a little shocked. It showed his immaturity and frustration. I couldn’t give a damn about a post game interview, as it is what goes down on the field that counts but, it did give us a glimpse of what Sanchez’s make-up is all about. He is still immature and he is extremely frustrated. Both are understandable. He is young, inexperienced, and losing crazy games. He has never dealt with anything like the Jets’ curse.
I think that the media is part of NFL football and that he should be criticized for how he responded. It is important for Sanchez to show maturity on the field and off the field. It is important for him to channel his frustration and not let it affect his performance or his personal life. Those are signs of being a true “Professional”.
jimmy leonhard will have surgery on his thumb. rex just announced at his presser. he did not say how long he would be out
He played 16 games in college. He is only about 23 years old. He is playing in the biggest market and fishbowl in the U.S. He is a rookie in the NFL playing for the “cursed” Jets who’s coach thinks they can go to the SB….So please give the guy a break. At least he did not do a Ryan Leaf and try to beat up the reporters:)
On a side note, Rex better start applying some type of discipline to eliminate all those “mental mistakes” otherwise the Jets will continually self-destruct!
I have to say i liked it cause at least he didnt seem like he was about to cry .
Harvlis hit the nail on the head. People, it’s not about the media or needing him to answer questions for our benefit. The point is there is protocol and a way you have to deal with the media here. Sanchez’ stunt yesterday is indicative of a larger immaturity/attitude problem with him. I personally don’t really care about him answering questions, but doing it a respectful way without trying to dictate things like an arrogant prick is part of the deal with playing in New York. Again, it’s not about the media or wanting him to answer specific questions, rather it shows that he really can’t deal with the NY package yet, and that’s scary considering he’s 4-5 and hasn’t been crucified like we’ve seen other Jet QBs be. This is not the end of the world, but if you think it’s a nonissue I think you’re sadly mistaken.
Seriously, do you REALLY know who should be at the presser being grilled?
Suckenheimer, that’s who.
“Coach , can you tell us the thought process behind 3 straight passes for what resulted in a 3 and out?”
“Given the offense is the number one ranked rushing offense, why do you have Sanchez passing in key situations? Shouldn’t he manage the game more than be given the pressure of winning it?”
“Why did you have Sanchez throwing passes into 25mph winds in 33 degree temperature vs the Bills? Was it a form of hazing or did you expect a Southern Cal QB to transistion to the elements fairly easy in a division game?”
Schitty needs to be in the hot seat!!!!!
Joe B,
You act like he is a politician, or a clergyman. What is the issue, at the end of the day it is a game, nothing more. He is a QB that works in the eye of the public, what did you miss if you watched the game that he had to talk about? As I said before most of the reporters questions are not worth answering anyway, so I am not sure what the issue is? Watch the game for 3 hours on Sunday, and enjoy it, who cares about all of the nonsensical analysis.
cabras -
Again, you’re missing the point. There’s nothing he was going to say that I needed to hear, and it’s not about the press conference, but his “I’m gonna flip the script” attitude is indicative of a larger immaturity problem. He thinks he’s earned his stripes and doesn’t have to answer questions like everyone else. That’s unacceptable, end of story.
Joe B.,
Really? This is indicative of a bigger attitude problem? This kid has been a good soldier since day one. He ate a freakin’ hot dog on the bench when he was battling a stomach virus, because he hadn’t eaten all day. It was a poor choice and I doubt he’ll ever do that again. Immature, yeah probably, but still just a stupid rookie mistake, not a big deal. Sports media makes it into the biggest thing to happen to the Jets since…..since….ever?
Now this. I don’t care, to be honest, who follows “protocol”. It’s not immature that he did this. How many veterans have lashed out at the media? I’m going to safely bet that it’s quite a few. So the kid didn’t want to deal with Gary Myers and Steve Serby, can you blame him? Every presser he gives is textbook, and one time he clearly is frustrated and at his wits end he does this and he’s all of a sudden an arrogant prick? Please. It’s a rookie mistake, not the end of the world. Is it stupid? Yeah. Is it funny that he screwed the media? To me it is. Does this mean he isn’t going to be successful in the NFL or he won’t continue progressing? Not at all. Is him being pissed about losing and not wanting to get drilled with questions by the media really the end of the world? I don’t think so. At least he showed up. Antonio Pierce ran away from the media after they lost to the Chargers. Let’s look at this for what it is…nothing.
Totally agree with you Joe B. And I was disgusted when Chad pulled his bogus media move. It’s part of the package – especially in NYC. You get paid more in many cases b/c you have to put up with more. I don’t know Cmini or Cannizzaro, but they must have almost sprained a cornea rolling their eyes at Sanchez…l love the kid, just a stupid media gaffe. Earn your stripes in this town before pulling crap like that…same goes for Scott after his “how dare you” speech…All that being said, we’re really not out of this yet, so let’s go beat the Pats AGAIN on Sunday.
I think the kid’s got a nice future here, but he needs to let the reporters do their job and focus on doing his own.
Does anybody know where to find the video??
come on, give the guy a break. he was angry about the loss, his mistakes, the embarrassment. i give him credit for being a bit of a smart a$$ about the whole situation. he clearly is a young guy who accepts responsibility for the losses, knows that he is getting BETTER this season, and desperately wants this TEAM to be successful. that is exactly what you want from your 23-year-old franchise QB. Chad’s “it-is-not-a-right-it-is-a-privilege” speech was embarrassing and immature. if anything it shows even more poise by sanchez. he took control of that media room and issued a statement, instead of subjecting himself to the same old questions that everyone already knows the answers to.
im speaking for the jets/ ny media go f……………k yourselves ;sanchez dont worry the jets and mets have always been 2nd class citizens in ny you guys are learining make your mistakes so next year you could go out and shut everybody up i believe jets future will be great
i have a feeling the jets are going to beat the patriots that would be 3 in a row and it will make my year it will show the tides are turning .i think all of us will take that
I could also understand guys being PISSED after losing a game like that and just wanting to get the hell out of there…
but in NY its crazy to ever think you are going to win vs the media. They LOVED Rex Ryan and now he is the biggest oaf on Earth.
I understand why he was like that but I hope someone tells him he is fighting a battle he cant win
It was just odd and that scares me that he thought he could get away with that in NY. Alot of things are blown out of proportion but that is exactly why you can’t do something so stupid. And stop saying how “great” guys were after a loss. It drives me nuts. I think he will be good someday but it will take some time.
There are plenty of soldiers younger younger than him fighting and dying overseas, so dont tell me it is too much to expect him to get this part of his job right.
As Rex would say, boo hoo hoo.
It is simple, he is being paid a ton of money, and part of his job description is dealing with the media.
I personally dont give a schott about the media, but the fact is it is his job to deal with them, a fact he acknowledged the day of his signing, even bragging that coming from USC he could handle the spotlight.
Time to grow up.
I’m sick of people covering b/c Sanchez is a rookie. The Jets are in the NFL last time I checked. Also, he’s getting paid like a pro. Sick of the excuses.
