Welcome to the Nadir

Honestly, if you want to know what I’m thinking on this Monday Morning. It’s the same thing that I told my wife as I watched the end of the game yesterday at 4PM as I sat at my church, waiting for the service to start, I stared at my iPhone (thanks DirecTV!) and watched Maurice Jones-Drew kneel on the one yard line, effectively ruining my day.

lion.jpg“They’re a very talented team with a number of players who are excellent, but they just can’t get out of their own way when the game is on the line. They have no clue how to get ahead on teams, or put them away. They’re like The Cowardly Lion. They talk a good game, but hide behind their tail. I want to hate this team, but I can’t, with everything this team has going for it, more than anything they’re pathetic and I just feel sorry for them.”

This is a new low in my Jets fandom.

I don’t know that I’ve ever been a fan of a Jets team with so many talented parts, that is on the whole, so terrible. I want to hate this team, but (here comes another movie analogy) they’re like Gollum in the Lord of the Rings, they’re not even worth hating, they’re below hating … it just comes down to pity.

So for now, I’ll stay my hand, because it’s just not worth the effort.

  1. Ditto, couldn’t agree with you more!

  2. Most games in the NFL come down to a handful of plays and who makes them and who doesn’t determines who wins and who loses. Although the Jets have played quite poor at times, the margin between being 4-5 and 6-3 is quite thin. Six of the nine games the Jets have played have been determined in the last two minutes or in OT. They’ve loss four of them. You make a couple of plays, hell, a couple of Hartock penalties might have cost them two wins, and we’re looking at a 6-3 team this morning and everyone has a different feeling and outlook regarding this team. That is the real killer in regards to this team. The what ifs.

  3. I don’t know if I hate them, or I hate myself for letting my expectations go high after the 3-0 start.

At the beginning of the year, I said rookie HC & QB, challenging schedule, maybe 8-8 with signs of improvement down the stretch.

After the start, I told my wife it was bad because now I had dared to HOPE … we all know how that’s turned out.

So now I’m back to my original prognostication. In a weird way, yesterday wasn’t as devastating as the Dolphin loss because to me two weeks ago because that’s when I came crashing back down and realized that this is a .500 team, nothing more.

So as I HATE to see my boy BB down, I would point out that this team has lost 4 games by less than 5 points. Although that’s frustrating — and it seems as though we’re always just about to get that carrot dangling out in front of us — I would say that we’re probably closer than you think. They aren’t getting blown out, or even getting embarrassed (other than losing). Look at the vaunted Giants — they’ve lost a bunch of games in a row, and only the last one, were they even in it.

I expect that next year they will make that leap we so desperately want as the HC and QB get a tough season of mistakes behind them.

  4. expect nothing …… rex could just as easily be the lost buffoon he looks like this year …. next year…….. his mistakes are beyond rookie ……..

  5. What I see here is not a lack of talent but a lack of heart and that is so much worse.

  6. Draft Eric Berry

    and

    Beat those Stupid Pats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  7. While it is frustrating to see this happen, and being at the game seeing the Jets fans get real loud on that last drive urging the D to stop them and failing. It hurts no doubt about it. I still have to stand by them until they are offically eliminated. Hey all I can say anything can happen. Good thing the Pats lost last night. So we didn’t lose any ground in the division. If we beat the Pats on Sunday only one game seperates us. It will be tough but I am ready to roll!

  8. The team just lacks leadership. That’s the bottom line. Nobody on the team has ever won anything.

  9. the pats are going to destroy us. and we always lose games by 5 points the players and coachs change but the results never do and never will.

  10. ^^ apparently the fans will never change either…grow up..

  11. Basset, love the movie references, right on.

What you are essentially saying is this is a poorly coached team, a team with talent that has no clue how to win a close game.

Some might blame the rookie QB, but the coaches are supposed to put the talented veteran players in the position to win these games while minimizng the roles of the less talented and/or younger players.

The coaches have instead put younger unproven players (Sanchez, Keller, Greene, Woodhead (specials vs. MIA)) in major roles at critical times and have paid the price.

A top five running attack and a top ten defense is 4-5? Lay the blame with the coaches.

  12. Its almost time to demote Rex Ryan and bring in at all cost Bill Cower!

Oh and by the way…. IT’S TIME TO FIRE SHOTTY !!!!

  13. Wow. Already want Ryan out after 9 games? Geez I see that patience is a strong virture you have….Do you realize he hasn’t coached a full season yet? Giove him a freakin chance rather than sharpening the axe.

  14. YOu know come to think of it this is why it is tough being a Jets fan. I will always rout and be optomistic no matter what until the bitter end. I know a lot of the fans out there don’t agree and are pesemistic, but I think the pesemistic Jets fans bring this stress in their lives as a Jets fans on their own. As much as I hate seeing the ups and downs each year, I still bleed green. Sure the older Jets fans who have been around will say they have a reason to. “The same old Jets”. But I ask you if you feel that way, then why don’t you changes teams? You can’t the green is in your blood too. Look at it as being a fan and not look always as the glass half empty. Especially this year going in with a rookie HC and QB. Lets show a little patience.

  15. Andy, stop being so reasonable. You don’t fit in here with all the extremists here. (kidding)

Rookie HC…rookie QB…thats all that needs to be said.

  16. Rookie HC and Rookie QB just dont cut it for me. Sanchez has shown that he can play at a high level. We should expect more consistency from him. However, I’ll give him a pass, he’s been working hard and it hasnt been Sanchez whose been losing games for us.
Ryan on the other hand, perplexes me. He’s supposed to be this defensive genious, and yes he does have some esoteric schemes going there. But all the schemes in the world dont mean a thing if the fundamentals – proper tackling, proper catching – are all falling by the wayside. Its one thing to make a bad call or two or mismanage the clock as a rookie HC, but its quite another to see such an appalling lack of fundamentals from these players. You don’t need to be a head coach to get players to tackle or catch properly. Those are the basics of the game! Ryan gets another year, but if this continues, he should be outta here in ‘11.

  17. Bassett, I honestly don’t see the talent that you do, and I’ve been saying this for a few years now. Seriously, look at our d-line, sans Jenkins, and where is the talent? An aging Ellis? Journeymen like Pouha, Douglas, Green or Devito? Look at the LB’s and you see two overpaid backup-types (IMO) in Pace and Thomas, a complete bust in Gholston, a guy who talks more than he plays (Bart) and one really promising, talented player in Harris. As far as the secondary, we all know Revis is a stud. After him, Rhodes is horribly overrated, Lowery is a nickel guy at best, and I guess Leonard is a nice story, but not exactly Pro Bowl-caliber. So again, where is all this talent?

  18. bernie,

Pace an overpaid backup? Have you watched any games this year. The guy is a force, plain and simple. Our linebackers are fine, although an upgrade over Thomas would be nice. Our D-line needs more studs, that is certain. Ellis may be aging, but he is one of the best D-lineman in the league. If you compare him to DT’s instead of DE’s (because he really plays a DT-style position) then you’d see his production is more than solid. Pouha, Devito and Pitoitua are all showing they have potential to be very good D-line. I saw Devito and Pitoitua yesterday creating chaos with their penetration. They’re both big and strong and young. Not everyone can be a Pro-Bowler, but those guys are the future at DE for us. Leonhard had a ridiculous game yesterday, and if not for the club he was forced to wear he would have had an INT and a forced fumble. The talent is there, we just need more time in the scheme and a few more pieces.

  19. Andy,
Let’s get something straight, like most who cheer for this team we’ve been through more downs then ups! After giving 34 years of my life, my money, my heart, and my devotion to this franchise (which I will never get back – so I’m invested) I am not going to jump to another team because you want me too. I’m entitled to say what I want, when I want in regards to “MY” Jets, I have no problem with a rookie QB, nor do I have an issue with the inexperienced back-up players who are doing what they can to cover an injured starter. I like Rex and his bravado, but I’ve had it with re-building years because of new rookie coaches, and I have had it with Shotty too!!! Its time this team gets a “PROVEN WINNER” to call the shots!! Just like it’s time this team stops being a joke to the rest of the league and stops dumping on us fans. I’m so tired of helping other teams get to the playoffs, and saying “Brand new team, same old Jets”!

Since I’m ranting…. I will never root for the Giants because they are the other local team, and so you know I’ve boycotted the Giants/Pats SB a few years ago because I despise both teams.

  20. Its amazing if you dont drink the kool aid u r a bad fan!

  21. Jets-Fan-4-Life-

Listen I never said you cant say anything negative or knock the Jets when they do bad. I do too, but what my issue is is the quick axe that some people have. Listen Shotty yes should go. let him get his head coaching job some where. But we still do not know what Rex is yet it is not fair to say exactly what kind of coach he is. The book is still out on him. I do applaud you for sticking with the team I know it is tough and frustrating but there is still plenty of football to play, and if it don’t work out then there is always next year..LOL. Yah and I hated that superbowl too, just like this past world series being a Mets fan.

    reality jet fan,
Iam not saying they are bad fans, I think that it just ads to the frustration. Besides the koolaid is good! LOL

  22. Brendan,

Wow. Let’s just say I disagree. A lot. Calvin Pace would not start on the Steelers, or the Giants, or the Eagles, or the Ravens, or the Vikings, or the Pats… in other words, any legit contender that considers their defense to be elite. Pace is a nice player, don’t get me wrong. But if he’s your best pass rusher, you are in serious trouble.

I won’t even comment on Devito and Pitoutoua (who?) being forces on the d-line. They are backups (maybe) on an elite team.

  23. Andy… Ok agreed.

Just keep in mind that there are 5 “proven” SB winning HC’s available next year.

    (1) Cower (The Golden Chin)
    (2) Holmgren
    (3) Shanahan
    (4) Gruden (Add Bill Callahan to the mix and just think of the possibilities).
    (5) Fassel

  24. Bernie,

“who?” is a 6′8″ 310+ lbs. behemoth who was manhandling the Jags tackles in the second half. Get used to him, he’s going to be our guy at DE for the next few years, alongside Devito. It’s nice you’re so quick to call them both backups when they’ve had…oh…about 10 seconds to show their worth so far this season. How about you wait a while before writing off two guys who are 24 & 25 years old.

Steelers have Woodley & Harrison. Gmen have about 10 DE’s. Ravens have Suggs and J. Johnson. Eagles would definitely take Pace (Victor Abiamiri?? What?) So would the Vikings (no thanks, Ray Edwards). My point is every team has different strengths. You think the Broncos wouldn’t want Pace instead of Mario Haggan? You don’t think the Bengals wished they had him right now? The Pats? The Cowboys wouldn’t start him over Anthony Spencer? Pace is a very good football player, and would start on many contenders defenses.

  25. I would like to know how mark sanchez had time to write a speech between end of the game and press conference. Did he write one speech for a loss and one speech for a win!

  26. Amen, bassett. Amen.
