Link: Payback Time?

You knew Mike Florio at PFT would weigh on on the Rex crying incident, and here’s what he writes on ProFootballTalk:

Every year, a team seems to emerge from a mediocre midseason record, getting hot down the stretch and carrying it into the postseason. And if the Jets can go to Foxborough and complete a sweep of the Patriots, that might be the spark Ryan’s team needs.

But maybe Ryan’s tears came from the reality that, after letting one get away on Sunday night in Indy, the Patriots will be looking to hang 60 on a Jets team that treated a win in Week Two like a victory in early February.

  1. Apparently, a new HC spot just opened up in NY. Maybe some would be happy to see Rex shuffle off to Buffalo?

  2. Like when they were going to beat them by 100 last season and won by 10?

  3. Shocking to see Florio predict the Pats to put up 60 points Sunday. Life was much more pleasant when I forgot this guy existed.

  4. Does anyone realize we have won 2 straight games against the Pats?

  5. I don’t know, this doesn’t sound so snarky. I’d say the Patriots inspiration to score 60 has less to do with embarrassing the Jets and more to do with redeeming themselves after the blown game on Sunday night. Conversely, the Jets defense will be looking to smash Tom Brady into the ground after blowing their own game on Sunday.

This all reminds me of 2007. Everyone thought the Patriots would beat the Jets 65-3 in retaliation for Spygate. Vegas set the line at 17 1/2 or something ridiculous. A vastly inferior Jets team instead stayed with the Patriots all game and lost by 10. Everyone needs to chill out. The Jets have just as much if not more motivation to kick @ss as the Patriots do this Sunday.

  6. i wouldnt take it all that seriously….
the patriots have shown they are willing to try for 60 against just about anybody when given a chance. they’re not that discernign when running up a score.

i’m hopeful about revis on moss, but someone has to be on welker. it might be time for a really big game from sanchez. have to figure they need to score at least 24, more like 28+ to win.

  7. I know this makes no sense and I’m providing no arguments for why I feel this way, but I feel like the Jets will either get absolutely blown out on Sunday, or they’ll pull out a “nobody saw it coming” win.

  8. ??????

when have they gotten blown out of any game? they’ve lost 4 games on a play or 2.

  9. The point about Welker is a good one. That slippery little bastard is going to have the poo-poo platter of Hollywood, Erik Smith, Lito, and Donald Strickland covering him. And there’s always a chance that Moss can get past Revis once or twice (if he feels up to it).

  10. Hopefully Welker takes a trip down David Harris Drive and gets run the F— over. That’d be nice

  11. i guess my point’s also that they can’t realistically expect to score 17 or 20 and win the game, like the first time. but can’t go up there to get into a shooting match either.
tough call on how to game plan offensively. but as usual, brady on his back or 4-6.

  12. Lets just please go out and beat these guys it’ll make this season not seem so bad and i hate the patriots. Tom Brady put a homeless man in jail… really happened… so lets shut his dumb face up one more time and make bill belicheck maybe show some emotion for once. I love the sound of it lets go JETS. For many of the critics that believe randy moss will have a big game obvously arn’t very fond of darrelle revis( the best corner in the game hands down), he will get a pick because dumb tom brady will force it his way and randy will finally implode and so will the pats.

  13. Brendan,

Even if the game is close this team is FRACTURED!!! SORRY!!! Its fractured like its incompetent, overweight, floozy, head coach. Look at the situation objectively and stop making excuses for yourself. The Jets are finished because the head coach has given up. If he is trying to paint himself in a move to get attention he will get attention when the jets players one by one will get injured. The rest of the nfl has taken noticed they aren’t feeling sorry for him. They are going to keep kicking him into the ground!!!!!

  14. Fonzie,
    WTF are you talking about.

  15. Hello All,

I’m a Pats fan. I’ve been lurking on this site for a while, just reading and soaking stuff up. I’m also a Mets fan, and Metsblog would often reference this site, so I decided to check it out.

A few things – That game in 2007…..it happened to be a nor easter that game….so that may have had SOMETHING to do with the Pats not hanging more than 20 on the Jets……

Also……The thing I’ve noticed with the Jets is………they’re confident…which is fine…..but they just don’t shut up about it…..which 1. gives other teams added incentive to stick it to you, and 2. makes you look really really stupid when you can’t back it up……oh and 3. The team has the habit of acting like they won the superbowl when they really havent (wins against the Pats in 2008 and week 2 in 2009 as an example), and then end up going downhill shortly thereafter.

Bottom line the way I see this Jets team is…..they’re trying to find an identity…….they have really nice pieces. Rex Ryan will be a fine coach in this league……and Sanchez will be an above average QB if not a pro bowler on a regular basis. You have excellent pieces on this defense, and some offensive weapons as well. Rex just needs to finish molding this team…..even the “great” Belichick went 5-11 year one with the Pats………In a few years time they really will be a force to be reckoned with and I look forward to the epic battles our two teams will have with one another.

In the mean time, I hope we trounce you on Sunday……and oh yeah, Lets Go Mets.

  16. You know, whats the problem with celebrating a win against the Pats. The Pats have dominated the Jets for years now. Of course getting a win against them is a big deal! You dont think Appallachian State celebrated after beating Mich? Or Navy over Notre Dame? Those were all random games then, but it was the exuberance of a team firing on all cylinders and beating the odds and one of the best teams in football. Finally, I think the Pats deplorably running the score up all throughout 2007 was worse than the Jets celebrating a cathartic win at the beginning of a new era at home.

  17. +1 to Pat for writing an intelligent post and being classy.

I like to try to think the best of other teams’ fans. Nice post.

  18. Well, I would argue there is a difference between college sports and the NFL, but we can agree to disagree there – most of these guys are fresh out of college anyway.

There is nothing inherently wrong with it, but when the team slips slowly (or quickly) into oblivion as the Jets did in 2008 to finish in third, or even this season, to where they are now…..i guess it calls into question the team’s motivation.

In 2006 when the Mets finally won the NL East….IMO they celebrated waaaaay over the top for a division title…..granted they didn’t win one since 88, but then they go off and lose to a vastly inferior Cards team in the NLCS…..to me, it makes me wonder what was in their heads……

Losing last Sunday night still ticks me off to no end, but I’d rather lose one in embarrassing fashion like that, and use that as motivation for the rest of the season, than win it…..and then fall by the wayside shortly thereafter. Whether the Pats will do that remains to be seen I guess, but the last time a Belichick team lost back to back games was in 2006. Actually it was week 9 and 10……to the Colts and the Jets……..I hope history doesn’t repeat. jeeze

  19. I cant believe what I just saw… kerry Rhodes was interviewed on SNY and was asked if the Jets will win more then 9 games this year… his response was.

    HMMMMMMMMM over 9 games…

He actually had to think about it.. he has got to go!

  20. The Pats aint scoring 60, 50, 40, 30 points. WHAT A FRIGGING JOKE. The Jets are are just below .500 & the Pats just above it. Give me a break. If any of you are scared of this Patriot team, move to Boston.

This writer should EXPORT THE EXPORT OFF!

  21. Hey Fonzie, Sit on it. Go pull for the Browns, they need every fan they can get.

Hey Florio, go F@#$ yourself with a crooked broomstick.

Hey everyone else, I don’t care what it takes but if Rex can motivate the team to win I say do it.

Now lets go up to Foxborough and special deliver an A$$ whooping to the cheaters of New England.

    Go Jets!!!!!

Tom Brady may get more than he wants come Sunday with our D ready to play.

    Go JETS!!!!!!

  22. One thing about the game-

the Pats are going to have to prove they can pound the ball a little bit. If Brady has to throw it 50 something times like the last game, the Pats will score but nothing like the 60 people are talking about.

with the way this season took a turn, The Jets will lose the game 2-0 after Dearth snaps the ball over Weatherfords head and it goes out of the back of the end zone…emotional freakin rollercoaster

  23. Harris52ChampionshipDefense -

Actually, the line in that 2007 game was Pats -24. The biggest NFL line I can remember.

And I’m excited for Sunday just to see Revis expose Moss again. Hell Relle owns that wuss.

  24. Does Florio have a clue? No reason we can’t beat New England again. We have a better chance of beating them, then them hanging 60 on us. As for celebrating after beating them, our rookie QB had just beat Brady in the third game of his career and we were 3-0. Yeah, Florio’s right — we should have walked off quietly. A……

  25. Yea and I forgot too add this

D Revis is one of the only guys that can stick Randy Moss for 4 qrts. He has gotten better against him every time they played.

  26. The difference between these 2 teams is so small this year. Obviosuly the Pats are more consistent & the Pats offense is better that the Jet O. But the Jet D is better(though it doesnt play that way). The spread on this game is waytoo high

Mike Florio is smoking crack. I hpe the Jets hang his “60″ in the locker room & embarrass the Pats again. I don’t care if we win another game this year. I want to win on Sunday really, really BAD.

  27. hmmm, the Jets have only lost one game by more than 5 points. (the saints). so they are in the games they just need to learn to win, as all good teams eventually need to learn.

I’m going to make a comparison, mostly to make myself feel better, because I like what Rex is doing, and expecting a lot from a rookie HC and QB is assinine.

    Bill Parcells started (NY)3-12-1
    Bill Belichick (NE) 5-11
    Peyton manning colts 3-13
    Tony Dungy (Tam) 6-10

I could go on but i feel better now. The Jets are close

  28. nothing would be better than smacking those punk Patriots…….beat em once, we can beat em again……..if not, atleast lets see Brady limp off the field with his 2nd knee injury

  29. Should be a good game this Sunday, in the division and two pissed off teams, who could ask for more? Just one thing, anybody that posts wishing for an injury to the other team in any way shape or form isn’t a true NFL fan. I’ve noticed that recently on this board, let’s argue the positives and not issue threats, this is, after all, a game. That being said it should be a good game, you’re in our house this time, I have a feeling Bill will be punting late in the game.

  30. LET GO JETS….show the pats who we really are!!!!! damn i love this team come hell or high water….jets fan all the way..i hate you ship jumper…negative idiots what are u fans for? answer that one?……….go jets…..and got real fans!!!! hey that pats guy actually made sense and wasnt a prick…nice post bro!

  31. make NO MISTAKE…the Patriots WILL try to score 100 on us this Sunday! I think that we HAVE to win this game for any RAY OF HOPE to make the playoffs! We REALLY arent a BAD team! We lost ALOT of games that we SHOULD have won! Yes, I chalk it up to a ROOKIE COACH,ROOKIE QUARTERBACK and oh yeah,LOSING probably the BEST RUN STOPPER in football and our BEST OFFENSIVE weapon in LEON WASHINGTON! I have been saying the past TWO weeks that THOSE games were OUR SEASON,but they really were’nt. THIS week is OUR SEASON! If we lose, well, you know the answer.

  32. PatPatriot is an intelligent, reasonable, Pats fan. Good job man, you called it just like it is…
