There’s a lot of opinions out there in the past 48 hours around this team and it’s coach, so we thought it’d be good to present some of them to you in bite size pieces with our best hack at a one-sentence abstract.
Writer: Columunist Gary Myers at New York Daily News
Title: Cryin’ shame: Rex Ryan must handle emotions for New York Jets to succeed
Bassett’s Abstract: Though sources close to the Ravens know this is who Rex is, Rex needs to get his junk together.
Snippet: “Players look to the coach to set the tone. He can never let on that the losing is getting to him. The last thing the Jets want is for Ryan to turn into a robot like Eric Mangini. But he can’t lose control of his emotions. Once that happens, he can lose the team … How many times has Ryan already declared the Jets face a must-win? Do that too many times and you lose the attention and respect of the players. Ryan’s biggest problem is he overrated the Jets talent and underrated the history of failure in the organization. His players have been unable to back up his boasting.”
Bassett’s Thought: I can’t believe I’m saying this, but at the least, Gary Myers makes a point. It’s a fair question to ask.
Writer: Reporter JP Pelzman at Bergen Record
Title: Ryan’s message needs bite
Bassett’s Abstract: Ryan needs to rely on more than just emotion.
Snippet: “.. to his credit, Ryan hasn’t changed. He still is the same outspoken person he’s always been in the public eye, and he hasn’t changed behind the scenes, either … Still, even in football, emotion can take a team only so far.”
Bassett’s Thought: I do think that changing his tack, in terms of emotion isn’t the best idea. Still he does need to make some changes to his game management.
Writer: Reporter Mark Cannizzaro at New York Post
Title: Keep on yappin’
Bassett’s Abstract: Rex has made some mistakes, but get off his back.
Snippet: “The same people criticizing Ryan are the ones who wanted Mangini run out of town because he wasn’t filling up their notebooks with pithy quotes or delivering juicy sound bite material to the cameras and microphones.”
Bassett’s Thought: A good defense, but totally disingenuous when you consider what the back cover was yesterday on his very own newspaper.
Writer: Columnist Don Banks at Sports Illustrated
Title: NFL Power Rankings Week 11
Bassett’s Abstract: Banksy is still pissed for getting out his “jump to conclusions matt” after the 3-0 start.
Snippet: “Rex Ryan crying in a team meeting? There’s no crying in football. No crying. Maybe some whining. Sniveling, yes. The occasional whimper. But no crying. Although I suppose with a trip to Foxboro looming and the wheels having come almost completely off for New York, it was certainly time for some over-the-top show of emotion from the Jets rookie head coach. I would have put my money on Ryan doling out a raging butt-chewing after that debacle of a loss at home to Jacksonville, but that’s just the football romantic in me.
Bassett’s Thought: I thought Ryan would have yelled at his guys too at some point after that one.
Writer: Columnist Dan Graziano at SNY.tv
Title: Don’t stop talking, start winning
Bassett’s Abstract: Better to be yourself and it not work than don’t be yourself and it not work.
Snippet: “See, every coach gets fired. Unless you’re Tony Dungy, it always ends badly. Whether Ryan flames out in a year or wins five Super Bowls, eventually he’s not going to be the Jets’ head coach anymore, and the overwhelming likelihood is that he’ll leave on somebody else’s terms. The worst thing would be, on the day that that happens, for Ryan to look around and say, “Boy. I wish I’d done it my way. I wish I’d been true to myself.”
Bassett’s Thought: This probably the best article I’ve read on the subject, seriously.

Mark Cannizzaro ain’t the editor so what he and the News do aren’t neccessarily in synch. That said, Rex has told us all he isn’t going to stop being who he is, and for that I’m damn glad he’s our coach. Like Sanchize, in time, he’ll be terrific. He too, needs time to grow.
So although ’09′s been another gut wrencher, at least we don’t have to worry about laying out all that cash for our post-season tix only to see them refunded!
p.s. if being a Jets fan weren’t such a damn rollercoaster, it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting to come up with (ala Charlie Brown with Lucy holding the ball), why this year’s going to be the one…
-
Agree with JetsFan4Life on how Cannizzaro is not in charge of the headlines on the back of the paper. While other writers in the paper may have criticized the crying Mark did not so you can’t call that hypocritical. His was actually my favorite article of the ones you mentioned, though the sny.tv one was good too.
-
Blah blah blah…None of it is actually relevant to what really matters, fixing the handful of mistakes that led to the narrow losses on the field. As long as Ryan and his staff can tune out the nonsense and learn from the errors and momentary breakdowns that have turned 3-0 into 4-5, this will all be quickly forgotten.
-
At the end of the day he’s taking it on the chin for his players lack of effort, as a long time Jets fan i’m tired of excuses but who really thought we would make the playoffs this year with rookies at key positions in the organization. That being said lets just win some games and build around Sanchez and we’ll get there. The tools are in the shed but just need sharpening.
-
Not satisfied with results, but I’ll definitely take these gut wrenching twilight like zone losses over some of our play in recent years where we’ve looked like Oakland.
We might not yet be getting to the endzone, but the team is definitely moving in the right direction.
p.s. I’d have no issues with dumping Shotty, and bringing in the offensive equivalent of Rex, a no-nonsense, get it done, coach.
-
Well we wouldn’t want Sanchez to end up like Alex Smith and Jason Campbell who’ve been is a different s just about their entire Careers. I think we either keep Schotty or get Calahan to be the guy.
-
this is a rookie coach. he should deff leave the crying for when he wins a superbowl.
i understand that he wants to be the good guy but he needs to learn that he’s the leader now. the guys will respect him more when he cracks the wip and hold ppl accountable for their play/actions. when he does that, there will be no more missed tackles, false starts and all that junk.(pun)
i said before that i like Ryan, he’s my coach and i ride or die with him. dudes the F-ing man. just wait when u all will be back on the wagon, bums.

From Cimini: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/
Say this for Rex Ryan: He’s not afraid to poke fun at himself. He began today’s news conference by placing a box of Kleenex on his lecturn and he kept it there for the duration of his session with reporters.
“Our new sponsor … for obvious reasons,” he cracked.
-
Rex Ryan has already proven what most of us already knew; he is a defensive mastermind and there is no reason to believe we wont have a great defense for as long as he is our head coach. I also think the players love him, and I think he is leading our team in the right direction. His flaws are just as apparent as his strengths; sometimes he says the wrong things, his game management has been suspect and he needs to do a better job getting everyone on the same page. The negatives are expected with a first year head coach and all of them are things that he can work on and eventually change. His defensive mind however, is rare and we should be thankful to have it.
-
I can’t believe you think Gary Myers makes a point either. Yes, Rex has said it’s a must win multiple times (so have the fans). But the Jets are “o-for” in those most wins so they build up in order to save the season. Buffalo was a must win because they needed to show that they hadn’t lost their ability to win and because they didn’t want to fall to .500. Oakland became a must win because they actually lost to Buffalo. Miami was a must win for the same reason as Buffalo and because it was a home game against a division opponent (these are always must wins) and Jacksonville was a must win because they failed to beat Miami and faced falling below .500.
The good news, Gary, is that if they lose to New England Sunday, there are no more must wins. The season is definitively over.
As for Rex crying, I’m glad he did. His players don’t seem to think any less of him and there is a difference between crying and sulking. The Jets were sulking. Crying –> anger like “dammit, get your ___ together” anger –> Killers who will go win a football game.
-
Damn skippy JR
-
Rex is 9 games into his head coaching career. He hasn’t been perfect; yet, I still do not believe that any of his coaching decisions or alleged clock mismanagement led to a single defeat this season. In fact, each defeat was caused by the players on the field not executing. Now, blaming the coach for a lack of proper execution may be appropriate in certain circumstances, but the mental errors that I’ve seen have all been on the players. Hartsock’s hold; Sanchez’s lack of ball security; Izzo and Fowler not tackling on special teams; Rhodes and Revis allowing Ted Ginn to get behind them; neither Rhodes nor Leonhard taking charge when it was obvious they were confused on defense. I don’t like the fact that Rex has been too free giving up timeouts and he should never have weakened his special teams before the second Miami game, but players have to execute. Also, Ryan’s actions seem to put the focus on him and not the players. We should be talking about how Rhodes got humiliated by Marcedes Lewis (not exactly a guy who is hard to miss) or how Sanchez’s inaccuracy is hampering the Jets offense (the Jags pass defense was very poor…with an average QB, the game would’ve been a blowout). In fact, I haven’t read a press report yet on how he missed a simple screen pass to TJ in the redzone…that was 4 points just given away. So, by taking the heat and having the spotlight on him, Sanchez has largely remained unscathed by the NY media. When you hear the national media talk about the Jets, they almost always bring up how Sanchez is struggling. Ryan’s tears might have been the best thing for Sanchez because he bears as much responsibility as anyone (maybe more so) for the loss to the Jags.

Why can’t we just be a normal football team? This is F’n ridiculous. Stop talking, crying and sucking and just play the Friggin’ game.
-
Rex will fire up this team, and this team will respond on Sunday and unlike last Sunday we will show up to play 60 minutes of football! This upcoming Sunday will show us what this team is made of and will surprise a lot of people! I think we will beat the pats by 10 points, and we will be alive in the playoff hunt afterward! C’mon guys, lets have some faith!!!
PS, this post was dedicated to virtualife who bashed me last time i posted BECUZ i didnt use correct grammar in my typing, just to show u us “22″ year olds can type correctly, its just easier wen we use our “slang” while typing…i personally call it aim language, dont kno if u guys kno about aim or dont but the younger generation does and kno wut i am talking about…but point blank, this is not school, or it is not a job application, THIS IS A BLOG!! a football blog to top it off…iF my “slang” bothers u den i suggest u do not read my posts cuz i find it easier to use my slang so therefore will continue using it when typing my posts on this blog..thank you!! GOOO JETS!!!!
-
I’m just glad Ronnie Brown is done for the year. Maybe now that they cant run that ridiculous Wildcat, we have a shot at the division/WC
-
“Why can’t we just be a normal football team?”
Because this is NY and there are 10 times as many reporters writing 10 times the number of stories. So every little thing that goes on gets blown out of proportion. We as fans can’t really know about all the little things that do affect the outcome of the game, so we fixate on the media stuff that really has no effect on the outcome of the game.
And because we have a slightly absurd fan base that projects their own neuroses onto the team. Everytime a fan mentions “40 years” I just roll my eyes. Gastineau late hitting Kosar has nothing to do with how these players perform. Marino faking a spike has nothing to do with how these players perform. Leon Johnson throwing a pick in the endzone on halfback pass has nothing to do with how these players perform. Bubby Brister getting a shovel pass intecepted…. Doug Brien… Vinny’s achilles… There’s no connection between any of that and what is happening now. Different players, different coaches, different owner in most cases. It’s never been the Same Old Jets; it’s always the Same Old Jets Fans. In other words, this will be a normal football team when we act like it’s a normal football team.
So we should watch the games. We should be passionate. We cheer like hell and criticize coaches and players when they deserve it. But don’t buy into the bs narratives.
-
NY media, gotta love ‘em. Something tells me no one would quite care as much if this was Mike Smith in Atlanta or Mike McCarthy in Green Bay.
-

I’m not a SOJF. Give our Rookie Head Caoch & Quarterback a break.. Look at the records of all the Great Coaches & QB’s and tell me They are not better than what became before them.If we don’t make it this year, We will will have a great team for years to come. GO JETS!
-
Schottenheimer is the sole reason that the offense is terrible. His apologists always blame the quarterback as to why the offense isn’t performing up to par: Penninton is hurt, Clemens was never any good, Favre is too old, and now Sanchez is a rookie…Meanwhile, Favre was MVP runner-up to Brady then goes and Jets and is horrible…Then he goes to the Vikings and is once again an MVP candidate…Don’t you see the connection??? Favre’s a year older and had about the same time to prepare with the Vikings yet he’s just like the Packers Favre (gimme a break with the lame injury excuse)..Where was that Favre when he was on the Jets?? The real reason that Favre was nowhere to be found last season was because Schottenheimer didn’t know how to utilize him correctly…Schottenheimer tried turning Favre into a Chad Pennington clone but that would never work because they are total opposites…Schottenheimer has been bad every season with the Jets..His best season was his first because he confused teams with his unorthodox play-calling..By the end of that season everyone figured out that Schottenheimer was just plain stupid and is easier to figure out than my kid sister on Playstation….Even Mangini said that Schottenheimer was no good his first season with the Jets…By Mangini’s last season he had to script the opening drives for Schottenheimer…What a shock that Mangini’s scripted offensive plays were the only time when the Jets offense looked like it was pro caliber…Rex, please give Callahan the play-calling duties!!!!
-
I told everyone last season that Schotty was garbage and even made Favre look awful (gimme a break with the lame injury excuse)…I also NEVER wanted Rex or any other rookie head coach after Groh, Edwards and Mangini….Rex looks far worse than all of them…He reminds me a lot of Pete Carroll, but with a way bigger mouth (and body)…Pete Carroll actually showed more as a rookie coach than Rex has thus far and was fired after one season as Jets head coach…Rex has been awful in every department and even his defense is beginning to look like Mangini’s..I think he’s in way over his head..Remember, his father was also a great defensive coordinator but lousy head coach…I know it’s early but so far he looks more like Rich Kotite than Mangini…I never thought that I’d miss Herm and Hackett…Edwards and Mangini both made the playoffs their rookie season with far less talent (Groh just missed the playoffs on a missed kick as time expired in the last game of the season)…Rookie head coaches usually don’t improve that much anyway, especially when their Rex’s age and have been in the league and have as much experience as Rex (Mangini was like 15 years younger)…Now I know why the Ravens passed over Rex and hired someone outside their organization…It reminds me of when the Mets were the only fools in baseball who hired Willie Randolph…The Yankees were so happy to get rid of him so they wouldn’t have to pass on him when Torre would eventually leave…My final prediction is that Rex will be fired after the Jets flop again next season and everyone on this board (who at the moment are in love with him) will be calling for his head…I hope that I’m wrong and Rex leads them to the Superbowl next season but deep down inside all you Jets fan know that’s never gonna happen…Here’s to 2011!!!!!!!
-
I agree with Basset’s opinion regarding Rex crying like a little girl…This guy is too unstable to be the head coach..The players even admitted that they have never seen a coach cry like that in their entire football careers…The reason for that is because it’s unacceptable and really odd…This guy is in way over his head…That is why I never wanted the Jets to sign another rookie head coach especially with all the good former head coaches that were available this past offseason…What is with Woody and rookie head coaches (Groh, Edwards, Mangini, Ryan)? Now I know why the Ravens passed on Rex Ryan and brought someone outside the organization!!!!
-
I think Myers makes a good point that Rex overestimated the talent on the team. While coaching probably cost the Jets a chance at 12-4 in 2008, it was probably the easiest schedule I can ever remember a team playing. I think it would be natural for a team like the Jets, who basically are a ping pong ball since 2004 when it comes to records, to fall to 9-7 against a normal NFL schedule. Even if you want to say they upgraded at S and LB the fact is they brought in a rookie QB which would balance that advantage out.
I think the bottom line is that Rex has to be who he is, but needs to learn to tone it down a bit, especially when losing. I think all the yapping ends up being a distraction for the team similar to how the non-talk of Mangini also became a distraction to the club.
-
How many coaches stink before they become good? The guy in New England was horrible in Cleveland.
I hold Rex accountable for this season. He needs to be a Commander who has a grasp of football tactics & strategy. So far, he shows little of that. If you are coaching the ’85 Bears & crushing everyone by 25, it doesn’t matter what your tactics are. Maybe that’s why Rex never learned the organization aspect of the game.
Rex needs a bureaucratic football nerd(Mangini) working under him to handle the clock, timeouts, getting men on & off the field, etc.
-
Everyone criticizing Rex needs to takje a look in the mirror. He is in pressure cooker with Stupid A$$ Suckenheimer as his OC. He thought Rhodes could be a Ed Reed type he is more like Ed Norton. He expects his team to feel passionate as he does. He realizes that this is not the case as evidenced by the Defense laughing as MJD took a knee in yet another loss. I wish we had got Ray Lewis instead of Bart Scott for one simple reason: no one would be laughing in the face of a loss without Ray knocking the fool silly.
Imagine dreaming up defensive schemes then losing Jenkins, and having to try and play Gholston and watching Rhodes go through the motions and watching our ST look like a joke. Hell, if anyone here was stuck with some of these buffons you would be crying to. He will get this team turned around and we will win, but he will have to get rid of some of the baggage left from Mangini before he can get it going.
Go Jets!!!!!!
Beat those CheatersAlso BIG Panthers fan tonight!!!!

Bent:
All the INFO out of that episode indicates that he WAS “crying like a little girl”
Question: What makes you so positive that he wasn’t?
-
Bent:
Don’t want to be rude Bent but this question begs to be asked: What part of ” Crying Ryan” or Breaks Down” don’t you understand?
-
MEDIA SHARKS AHHHHHHHHHHH
-
Bent:
C’mon Bent, give it up!
-
Brendan:
Welcom to the Bright Side. You have finally been enlightened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Bent;
Thouht of something:
Lets compromise, Okay, OK NOT like a little girl, just like a WUZZZZ. Now that’s better, right?
-
I was making a joke, Hank. You are remarkable in your selective memory. You harp on something over and over (“MEDIA SHARKS!!!!!!”) when it is on a subject that you think it will benefit you, but when it’s a different subject you take those same media sharks as gospel. Look, even if Ryan did cry what is the big deal.
Dick Vermeil, Mike Ditka, Bill Parcells all cried. They also all won Superbowls. They also had 3 distinct styles of coaching. How about you look at it the way most fans are, as a guy who is so invested in this team and it’s success that he loses control of his emotions sometimes.
Oh, and for the record he was not a blubbering mess, he was talking through the tears, they were just running down his face while he spoke.
-
Gary Myers:
“Ryan’s biggest problem is he overrated the Jets talent AND UNDERRATED THE HISTORY OF FAILURE IN THE ORGINIZATION.”Isn’t the2nd half of that sentence (In caps) the very reason this blog was started in the first place? Stupid SOJ crap. Sorry, Myers may have valid point for the first time in his career somewhere in that article, but that conclusion precludes me from lending any legitimacy to it.
-
Brendan:
No Brendan, you and your friends have constanly convoluted my comments.
Yes, AS EVERYBODY KNOWS, I have hated and hate the slanted Media sharks. But you must keep it within some type of factual content of my comments.
My anger is, has been and will always be directed at the sharks that are so sensational, opinionated, spitefull and with so much power that they can injure a person, a nation even a culture. The Jets/Browns is a microcasm of today in general and reflects how they can abuse their power.
So again, you can not take the media at face value. You must go beyond the scribes, those outside the media, and try to obtain factual information from direct, Identifiable sources and make an intelligent decision.
Reading you comments, i really though you had finally understood this. I am sorry you did not.
-
Hank,
Here’s “within some type of factual content of (your) comments”:
Here, you are taking all these “slanted media sharks” at their word and saying that Rex was ‘crying like a little girl’. Now, assuming you mean blubbering, whimpering, can’t-speak type of crying, his players denounce that theory and say he was merely crying while talking to his team. You can’t speak and cry simultaneously if you are completely out of control and balling your eyes out. He was worked up, got a little stream of tears while talking to his team, and that’s it.
If you want to believe this then you can’t just discount all these same writers any time they write anything anti-Mangini as “slanted media sharks”. It’s hypocritical and shows that you just twist anything you can to prove your point. That’s what I’m saying.
You also do this with Tanny/Mangini. You always credit Tanny as bringing in the busts, and credit Mangini for bringing in the talent.
I’m sorry Mangini isn’t the coach here anymore. Ok, I’m not sorry. I’m sorry for you that he’s not. You clearly are set in your views of what a head coach should be, but this is a young man’s game. Time’s are not the same as they were in 1969, so maybe you should open up your views and realize that there are a million different ways to coach a football team, and there’s nothing to prove that Rex’s style doesn’t work yet, because it’s his style and he’s 9 games into his head coaching career. Stop hating this guy.
-
AND ONE MORE THING.
Forget about the Parcells, Ditka and Vermiel crying schtick.
Vermeil is the ONLY ONE that, in the Annals of NFL HISTORY, will forever be known as the “Crying Coach”. Not only from his crying, but because of his emotional BURN OUT.
And just like TO with hisc rying and “I LOVE MY QB” bit, so too Ryan will be known that way if he keeps this idiocy up. It is now his third time, fourth is the charm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Hank,
Idiocy? Since when is crying a senseless and foolish act? You can say forget about Parcells, Ditka and Vermiel all you want. The fact is, two of those guys will be remembered as being two of the greatest tough-guy coaches in the history of the sport, and both were known to lose control of their emotions and cry. It does not make you any less of a man to cry. Rex’s players do not lose one ounce of respect for their coach when he cries. In fact, from the look and sound of it, they may actually gain more respect for him. They see it for what it really is, a guy that cares so much that it hurts him to lose. Players love that, and will go to war for this guy every single week, because they know their coach will be doing the same.
-
Brendan:
You don’t realize it but you constanly rove my point in your comments.
I now you understood that I was NOT Confirming nor substantiating, nor stating as my opinion or fact that SEXY REXY was “crying like a little girl” although it could very, very well be true.
I was asking Bent, in the process of getting factual information, that based on everything said, how he can be so positive that Rex was not “CRYING LIKE A LITTLE GIRL”
Tha’s all, nothing more. So again you’re convoluting my comments.
-
Hank,
“All the INFO out of that episode indicates that he WAS “crying like a little girl””
?…How is that not confirming the fact that Rex was “crying like a little girl”? And look at the comments from his players, it wasn’t him crying and whimpering, it was him talking while tears ran down his face. Big difference.
And for all the talk you do about Rex, do you actually watch his full press conferences? He comes off nothing like the guy you would have us believe is Rex.
-
Brendan:
There you go again, you say:….”Since when is crying a senseless and foolish act?”
I guess I must explain it to you.
IT IS NOT CRYING IN GENERAL, IT IS GENERALLY CRYING THATS IDIOTIC.
The is a place and time for crying, and those that don’t know the difference are EMOTIONALLY CHALLENGED.
-
jets writers are just as dramatic and over-the-top as many jets fans. Yes, we have a team with a green rookie QB and a rookie head coach, we have had some injuries yo important players and yes the team has made bad errors in the worst times during the games. however if you had expectations of a superbowl year or even division winning year then you need to have your head examined and if you dont see any future promise in this team or its coach then you definitely need to find a different team to root for. I like Ryan and I do believe he will improve as a coach dramatically as times goes on…..he does remind me of a young Bill Cowher(who by the way, was almost run out of Pittsburgh as well). Wake up jets fans and stop whining….and i have no problem with a coach being upset enhough with a loss to cry…at least you know damn well that he cares about his team as much as any of us die hards do.
-
Hank,
You always skirt around this question, but did you ever play football? And I’m not being arrogant by asking that. It’s helpful to know if you did or not because it helps understand your mindset. As a former player, on many levels, I’ve cried before, during, and after games (non-injury related). There are times when you become overwhelmed by your feelings, adrenaline (have you ever felt that direct shot of adrenaline into your blood stream? Your body starts to shake and you can barely keep from going insane) “time and place for crying” in everyday life is one thing, but time and place in the game of football is entirely different. There is no designated times and places to cry during a football game. I’ve known player who cry during the national anthem, everytime, and they have no clue why. I’ve known players who work themselves into a frenzy little by little so by the climax of the game they have tears streaming down their faces. They’re not losing control, they just are at a point where that’s something they don’t care about. Football, in my opinion, is the most emotional of all the sports. Baseball is more calm and extended. Basketball is emotional, but you can thrive in basketball while coasting emotionally. Football you need your emotions, whatever they may be, to push through parts of the game where you’re clearly losing a battle. I just don’t think you understand the premise that football “time and place for crying” doesn’t exist.
-
Brendan:
I know, you know how I stand, but it’s blooging about it anyway. I’ll put it in a more direct format:
I like REX.
The ONLY step UP defensively from Mangini would be DREX ( gave him that name)
I called for his Hire
I was happy the Jets hired him
I heard his first Presser (hum, ok)
I heard his second presser( oh,oh)
I heard his his interview (OH,NO)
I heard his second interview(NO,NO)
I heard his pissing match with opposing players (NO, NO, NO)END OF STORY
He, his LB, and QB need to GROW up and SHUT UP!!!!!!!!
-
Fair enough. You also need to stop whining about it because, if you watch his pressers still, he isn’t changing. Nor should he. This is who the Jets hired. He talks, he encourages his players to talk, and when things don’t go his way, he owns up to it. He doesn’t make excuses. Neither does his QB. Sanchez owns up to everything, even things that definitely aren’t his fault. People that say he’s immature need to remember that. He is the leader of the offense, he takes that role very seriously and he puts the onus on himself while praising his teammates hard work and good plays. Sanchez made a script (which almost all athletes/coaches do) and answered all the media’s questions. He’s not immature, so that’s a dead issue.
-
Brendan:
Honestly, I enjoy blogging with you. I’m retired and it has become a major part of my day. Too much in fact.
One question are you a profesional football player? Does you living depend on it?
Because reading your comment, it appears that you are taking the emotional part of the game to new heights.
You would never know it by looking at ALL the Jets players on the field. Lots of time they are high-fiving, joking, slapping each other butts, (that’s a favorite one, I think) and generally “HAVING FUN”
That’s what they say anyway.
-
No I’m not a professional football player. I did play the game for 14 years and feel I have a pretty good understanding of it. I’m not taking the emotional aspect to new heights, it’s just that I don’t think it can be made clear enough how entrenched emotions are in this game. All I’m saying is I will never fault a guy for becoming too emotional (within reason, of course) and actually encourage our coaches and players to be themselves. And if Rex is a crier, then cry away big man, because that’s who he is and that’s the man he needs to be in order to get this job done.
-
Brendan:
“…………if you watch his pressers still, he isn’t changing. Nor should he. This is who the Jets hired.”
Don’t you believe it. He is changed, he has to. Or he better start winning at a good clip. Or else the media sharks, and New York as a whole will shredd him to pieces and spit him out…….of town.
Trust me, open your eyes, you will see the difference. He started already by asking for advice. Goo move.
-
Correction: Good move.
-
Brendan:
Look, I can fully understnd what you are saying.
However every sport IS emotion. That is what attracts us. But every person handles emotion differently. The winners use emotion to make them better. Others allow emotion to over come them and manipulate their game. To each his own.
But the fact of the matter is you must controll it, can’t be emotionally challenged and let it controll you.

I don’t mean he won’t change his clock management or how he organizes or how he delegates responsibilities. I mean he won’t change who he is. He’s not going to stop being boastful and brash because he isn’t a quiet, soft spoken guy.
And I don’t think him reaching out for advice (a move you were killing him for yesterday, btw) is a sign of him changing. If you can find any evidence that this is the first time he’s asked for help, then maybe I will think that way. But this strikes me as a guy who hasn’t done it all on his own and isn’t above asking someone for help when he lacks experience.

As far as Ryan crying I don’t see a big deal in it, he let his passionate emotions slip as a rookie head coach in front of the media and I wouldn’t be suprised if we never see it again. As far as Myers SOJ B.S. ummm… when’s the last time we smoked N.E. at home… He kept the Saints high flying offence out of the game… we killed Miami in the 2nd game and “lost”. Look at the Jacksonville game we were doing pretty good against another starving team. As a rookie head coach I think he’s doing pretty damn good. I think his biggest mistake was thinking that he could throw Sanchez in there and do a repete of what transpired with Falco and the Ravens.
I nevered agreed with throwing Sanchez in so soon, Clemmons didn’t look to bad in his 6 games and he’s been in the system and getting tips on Pro teams for years. If anything I think Ryan should have manned up to his mistake and pulled Sanchez, At what point is very debatable but come on 6 interceptions in a game… two against jacksonville for 66 yards… Look at the losses we’ve had how do you win against teams when you throw them 7, 14, 21 points for free… The kid has something but he isn’t ready for the Pro’s yet.
With the exception of the first Miami game this defence has been playing great and pretty damn good after the Jenkins loss. The real problem has been in Sanchez’s turnover’s and if Ryan should find any fault it’s with putting the kid in to early and not pulling him and I’m not to sure he had full say in putting the kid in there, {Woody} of course that is open for debate.
So Rex please keep on mouthing off, keep on “crying like a baby” and keep on doing what your doing because it will eventually get there. As for us fans you need to do what I’ve already done… click on autopilot and wait for Sanchez to mature. {2010}

I think this will either motivate the players and give the Pats their first back to back loss or it will ruin them for the rest of the year, if it worked in our favor, it would be totally awesome if it was planned.
For the many things Eric Mangini wasn’t, he was a Defensive Coordinator and a very good one, Rex is that and a better one at that and something Mangini wasn’t, is that Rex is a motivator, he will do anything to make the guys want to play for them.
