Link: Consistency Is Key

It looks like some of the stops and starts that the Jets have experienced on defense parallels with some of the Patriots struggles so far this season on the defensive side of the ball.

The Patriots forced seven punts, made one interception and led 24-14 with 15 minutes left. But they couldn’t finish the job as Manning rallied the Colts to a 35-34 win Sunday night.

“We would play well for a series, play real well, and then the next series (with) similar calls and we just maybe didn’t play them quite as well,” defensive coordinator Dean Pees said Tuesday. “We’re a little bit inconsistent at this point in time, and that’s across the board basically with the young guys, and no particular guy.”

After an abysmal first half for the Jets defense, the unit then proceeded to shut down the Jaguars for the majority of the second half, and allowed the offense to climb back into the game. It wasn’t until the very last series, where the defense flagged and the Jaguars moved the chains eventually scoring on a game-ending Josh Scobee field goal.

That inability to close that Dean Pees talks about above might be similar to the Jets struggles to stay consistent, but the Jets haven’t played a top offense like that of the Colts since the Saints game. Believe it or not, the Patriots offense is playing better than both of those ones. This game is going to look vastly different than the last game the Jets played against the Patriots.

  1. Wes Welker being healthy make this game a lot more difficult to win.

Not to mention a road game in that balmy Boston weather.

The angry Pats team thoery is retarded. They are no more prepraed to play us than any other week.

We can score on this defense….The problem is can we stop Welker? if not they will 1st down us up and down the field and never let there defense lose the game

  2. Sorry to go off subject, but what ever happened to the tampering allegations leveled by the 49ers? I thought Goodell was going to come down hard on teams filing baseless charges? I like how other teams can drag our franchise through the mud without any repercussions.

  3. I’m ready.. i’m fired up..
    Go Jets!!! Beat the Pats!!!!

  4. If there was ever a week we need some defensive points its this week.

I want to see how this defense reacts to their coach caring more about winning and losing than some of them do.

Its time to stand up and make a statement against a team and location that nobody thinks we can win.

  5. Belichick was just on ESPN. Can we get a link for the video up?

  6. JR,

You mean he was just on ESPN mumbling, staring blankly and giving backhanded compliments to the Jets?

  7. NorCal–
That was a bogus charge from the start. Just talk.

  8. I know, but being from that area, I’d like to see them get a slap on the wrist. When it happened I had to listen to all the Niner fans blame my team for their inability to sign their draft pick. It was very annoying and I would like Goodell to stick with his word about teams filing bogus charges as a negotiating strategy. Funny how absolutely nothing came out of the league office stating it was “completely bogus”.

  9. Brendan,

A friend told me that he was talking about the Jets in detail and was very complimentary. Also that he was praising Revis. Did you see it? Or are you just assuming?

  10. Oh I didn’t get to see it, I just assumed he’d be his normal miserable self.

  11. I like Rex Ryan, I really do…but….when the defense causes 5 consecutive 3-and-outs in the second half and then gives up an 80 yard drive to lose the game, that is not due to a lack of talent on the players’ part. It can’t be due to a lack of motivation with the game on the line. The Jets did not get beat with a fluke hail mary play. It was slow methodical drive by an offense that could do absoltely nothing in the previous 5 series. The coach needs to take a big hit for the Jaguar loss and must do a better job in the future(starting next week).

  12. Some guys in the press, like Rod Boone from Newsday, get it. Here’s a link to a great column:

  13. Sack,

You’re right–good column. But, we’ve been hearing pretty much the same thing for 40 years now.

  14. I love the comparison of the Jets’ D plight and that of the Pats. I particularly like the unavoidable and implicit concept that compares Garrard to Manning – obviously they are both future HOFs.

  15. That really is a well written article by Boone. Thanks for the link.

  16. Boone “It’s going to be OK, it really is.”

Obviously Rod’s new to covering this team.

This team was the talk of the league at this point last year. Then the QB got hurt, Jenkins wore down, and the ball boy masquerading as a HC got stuck in neutral.

Despite the collapse they won nine games and had every meaningful player under contract.

So whats a poor accountant masquerading as a GM to do? Yeah, go hire a rookie HC and use your entire draft on your QB and RB of the future all the while spewing that this remained a win now team.

    Brilliant!!

And now we are supposed to be patient, for the 41st year?

  17. Agree SD—I will start to believe again when the game results change. Till then I will remain to be a loyal Jet fan, show up at the home games and root for them to win. But after 40 years I would love to see some games wind up in the W column.

  18. “But, we’ve been hearing pretty much the same thing for 40 years now.”

Enough guys. How many of the players, coaches, GM’s, front office people, beer men, hot dog guys, cheerleaders, mascots are still around from 40 years ago?

    And how many fans?

See, the only thing keeping SOJ alive, is the SOJ fans. Stop the pity parties. Stop expecting bad things to happen. Stop celebrating in the struggles of this franchise (Hank, Fonzie). Stop relating this present team to one that was around before any of these players were even born. Stop.

(Old Rich, I wasn’t calling you out, it’s an overall sentiment that your line summed up quite well)

  19. That’s OK Brendan. I’m not totally SOJ. I try to be optimistic, and I’ll be here for year 41. But, the article recapped the same sentiment–be patient, we have injuries, we lost by only a 5.7 point average, rookie coach and QB. When a team wins, no need for that thinking.

  20. Look, I hate the “SOJ” phenomena because you really have to judge each season, each team and each coach on their own merits. This Jets team is vastly different from last year’s. Yes, I know the results may be similar, but there is reason for optimism. Boone catalogs these, but it bears repeating that Rex has done wonders with the defense, but he still needs more of “his” guys and, more than anything, needs a reasonably healthy Big Jenks (until a replacement is groomed) and a pass-rushing WILL. Also, as I’ve said repeatedly, expecting to win with a rookie QB who is struggling (like Sanchez has) is almost impossible. It’s too bad that the Jets started 3-0, it just raised everyone’s expectations (mine included) way beyond what we should have rationally expected. But, because you never know what you’re going to get with a rookie QB, the Jets could either win or lose any game left on their schedule. We will just have to live with the ups and downs.

  21. Just saw something on ESPN- Mark Scherleth- former NFL guy was asked about the Jets struggles- this basically summed up his analysis

“Inconsistency at QB position. Sometimes Sanchez is brilliant other times he is terrible, cant be a playoff team with a QB who cant put a team away or gives the ball to the other team”

Rex Ryan was never even mentioned. Now that was my basic assumption as to why the Jets collapsed and why they wont make the playoffs. You guys can call for Rex Ryans head, but Im going with the former NFL guy.

  22. [...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]

  23. Ak..Drew-Jesus Revus. I’m with you. All you SOJ fans who don’t like whats going on go root for some one else, then you can knock our team. If you’re a true fan you live and die with your team.
