News: Jim Leonhard Won’t Play Sunday

Already without one defensive difference maker in Kris Jenkins, an anonymous source has confirmed to the Star-Ledger that Jim Leonhard won’t be suiting up this weekend for the Jets against the Patriots.

The Jets will be without safety Jim Leonhard on Sunday against the Patriots and maybe longer after he underwent surgery on his right thumb on Monday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak publicly for the team.

Leonhard will be replaced by Eric Smith in the starting lineup.

Keep in mind that the Patriots didn’t have Wes Welker for the first game either, so this is a big swing in the other direction for the Patriots. As noted yesterday, it also means that someone else, likely Rhodes will be responsible for calling plays for the secondary.

  1. Patriots have no defense. Just ask their head coach. Go out and outscore them on Sunday.

  2. Well, Smith has played much better this season than he has in the past. And he does like to bring the wood, so it’s not a complete disaster as long as Smith doesn’t revert back to last season’s version and can’t cover Vince Wilfork back there.

I LOVE this article. Can’t believe one media member is actually criticizing some others….

  4. If eric smith plays well, don’t be surprised if it is a permanent move. Is kerry next to be replaced. Let’s hope so as he has been useless.

  5. ? Why would Leonhard not get his spot back? IMO he’s been a huge upgrade at the SS position. If he didn’t have a club on his hand last week he would’ve had an INT and forced a fumble, but without fingers those two things are hard to do.
