Only Leonhard & Gholston Out For Practice

You can tell it’s Patriots week and the Jets are motivated to prove something for their matchup this weekend. Today, only two players sat during practice. One has screws that were just put in his thumb, the other … we’ll let you decide.

Only two players missed practice: S Jim Leonhard (thumb surgery) and LB Vernon Gholston (hamstring). As Rex Ryan noted Monday, Leonhard is unlikely to play Sunday. From what I’ve been told, they may not know for sure how long he will be sidelined until late this week. Eric Smith will start in New England.

Smith, if you recall, played an integral role in the Week 2 upset of the Patriots. Used as an extra defensive back in sub packages, Smith blitzed Tom Brady a total of 17 times. All told, the Jets blitzed 33 times out of 47 pass plays, pressuring and/or hitting Brady 21 times.

As far as Gholston, it looks like he might be a scratch again this week, stay tuned on that one.

It’s a good reminder that Smith played a sizeable role in the game, but Leonhard still did play much of that game and of the two, I have to think that Leonhard is better in coverage than Smith.

  1. Every check out the beginning of Rex’s presser today- good to see he can still laugh at himself (and his QB too I guess)

  2. the most telling comment from Ryan about the Ghost, “he looked good in the uniform, but he did not practice”.

  3. omg Rex is hilarious. I love this guy.

  4. Man this is going to be tough, Leonhard is one of the biggest playmakers the defense has. I know it sounds ridiculous considering the guy gets no press, but it seems like he’s in on every play.

  5. PickSix- yeah I found that kind of weird too- you could kind of say that about him in every game- looks good, but it seems like he’s not there.

  6. Jets need to replace some of their dumb talented players with smart fundamentally sound players like Leonard.

  7. Lets see how people can spin the press conference-I can see Hank or Fonzie posts now

“First Rex is crying, now he is cracking jokes!!! This is not how a classy HC behaves. Somebody should rub his face in humble pie!!!” (note the Hank trademark 3 exclamation points)

    or

“Rex Ryan does not have the CHARACTER like Mangini neccessary to LIVE UP TO HIS WORD! YOUR WORD IS NO GOOD REX RYAN!!!YOUR PLAYERS NEED GUIDANCE,GUIDANCE,GUIDANCE!!!! NO TATOOS FOR YOU DWIGHT LOWERY!!!

The BS is getting so old, I can write it myself

  8. Hahaha omg Eddie, I got chills. If i scroll down and cover your name on the post, I wouldn’t be able to guess you wrote it.

  9. [...] thejetsblog.com. Please read the complete article and let us know what you think [...]

  10. Jim will be missed hes a great player

Is anyone els wondering why Rex didnt go get Chris Mcallister as FA to replace shepperd ,clearly a weak point .

  11. Bren-dog

Dude Its so easy, Ive been listening to the same ol crap from these two for 2 years. I came on this site because I thought it would be a nice relaxing way to still talk about football because I had stopped coaching for a living and started my own business, then I got these two idiots. The stuff they come up makes my skin crawl, seriously. The whole way they look at football and the way they “sissy-fy” the game goes against everything I was taught about how to compete. Its like the Math-letes started trying to tell me how to coach. I simple cannot stand for it

Its the same stuff, over and over and over and over, again. Just like you said, I know what they are going to say before I even have to scroll down and read it

  12. Brendan:

Now that we’re playing who wrote it……. guess who wrote this?

“It hard to find anything wrong with what took place out there today. As the Genius says “complimentary football”. Great gameplans, great execution.”

    I’ll give two guesses

  13. Brendan/Eddie

It has become so easy to predict what these guys are going to say ….even though there are times even they blow my mind with the nonsense they create.

I play a game in my head every Sunday called…… what would fonzie/hank say?? So far I am batting 1000%

  14. Drew:

It looks like you also want to play the “who wrote it game”

1)Tell me who wrote it and 2) about whom.
I’ll give you THREE guesses. Maybe you’ll win the kewpie doll

  15. I’ve been looking at this blog for a long time and really enjoyed it. But lately I’ve become really pi**ed by so-called fans (hank/naples-Fonzie). If you can’t say ,someting constructive don’t say anyting.A ture fan does not knock his team every time he says something.

  16. I agree with Basset’s opinion regarding Rex crying like a little girl…This guy is too unstable to be the head coach..The players even admitted that they have never seen a coach cry like that in their entire football careers…The reason for that is because it’s unacceptable and really odd…This guy is in way over his head…That is why I never wanted the Jets to sign another rookie head coach especially with all the good former head coaches that were available this past offseason…What is with Woody and rookie head coaches (Groh, Edwards, Mangini, Ryan)? Now I know why the Ravens passed on Rex Ryan and brought someone outside the organization!!!!

  17. Schottenheimer is the sole reason that the offense is terrible. His apologists always blame the quarterback as to why the offense isn’t performing up to par: Penninton is hurt, Clemens was never any good, Favre is too old, and now Sanchez is a rookie…Meanwhile, Favre was MVP runner-up to Brady then goes and Jets and is horrible…Then he goes to the Vikings and is once again an MVP candidate…Don’t you see the connection??? Favre’s a year older and had about the same time to prepare with the Vikings yet he’s just like the Packers Favre (gimme a break with the lame injury excuse)..Where was that Favre when he was on the Jets?? The real reason that Favre was nowhere to be found last season was because Schottenheimer didn’t know how to utilize him correctly…Schottenheimer tried turning Favre into a Chad Pennington clone but that would never work because they are total opposites…Schottenheimer has been bad every season with the Jets..His best season was his first because he confused teams with his unorthodox play-calling..By the end of that season everyone figured out that Schottenheimer was just plain stupid and is easier to figure out than my kid sister on Playstation….Even Mangini said that Schottenheimer was no good his first season with the Jets…By Mangini’s last season he had to script the opening drives for Schottenheimer…What a shock that Mangini’s scripted offensive plays were the only time when the Jets offense looked like it was pro caliber…Rex, please give Callahan the play-calling duties!!!!

  18. HAHAHAHAHAHA HANK

“It hard to find anything wrong with what took place out there today. As the Genius says “complimentary football”. Great gameplans, great execution.”

I wrote that when the Jets beat the undefeated Titans!!!!!

The Jets were awesome that day, you couldnt blame any Jet fan for thinking that way, but like the sensationalistic media savvy scoundrel you are, you took my comments out of context.

    Here is what really happened

The reason why I wrote “Its hard to find anything wrong with…” is because I was ALWAYS critical of Mangini and his inability to adjust. See unlike you, I can MAN UP and admit I am wrong about something. I always WANTED Mangini to prove me wrong and be successful but he could never do it. I was giving the guy credit for doing a GOOD JOB, what did you want me to say “Bad job beating the only undefeated NFL team, your not really the HC I want for my fav team so I wont give you any credit even if you deserve it”. Giving someone credit for doing a good job is not the same thing as endorsing Rex Ryan as the right guy, then stabbing him in the back before he can finish a full season, filling this blog with your two faced crap.

I always ripped Mangini and will continue to do so, but unlike you, if I dont like something, I give credit where credit is due. Its called being a STAND UP GUY. I dont run and hide like a little pansie.

So what did your little game prove about me? ZIPPO, NADA, NOTHING!!!! Congrats!!!

BTW Who threw for over 200 yds and 2 TD passes that game? Was it that guy, Brett Faav-ra?

  19. *and I meant to write ManGenius

  20. man, I was gonna step up here and diss VG, but you guys are too busy dissing each other.
