Randy is Dandy, But Darrelle Means Hell

There was some talk earlier today about Revis and his coverage with Randy Moss, here’s what Rex said today about Revis and man coverage.

I’ll put it to you this way. Having Revis allows us to do things most people don’t do, or have the courage to play against him. That’s man coverage. To man up and say alright here we are. Now Kerry Rhodes covers a lot of ground, so what maybe looks like Cover Two because of the range Kerry has, might have been Cover One. All I can say is we got the best corner in the league, and I don’t think there’s any dispute about that.

Thank you, Rex. Semantically, call it whatever you want. Revis was in man coverage and ended up not needing help on that interception for instance, but the Coverage help was there. Rhodes rolled over to play the ball. Although Rhodes wasn’t needed though on that play, that was his assignment; roam centerfield and play the ball. So schematically, that play was Cover One. Jim Leonhard hit Brady on that play, Rhodes was alone as the deep net. He came across the field, and although wasn’t needed on the play.

Bottom line, Randy Moss has had only one successful game against the Jets since he and Revis arrived, and it was Revis’ first game. Here’s a look at the stats so far for Moss against the Jets.

9/20/09 — 4REC – 24 Yds 9Lng 0TD
11/13/08 — 3REC – 26 Yds 16Lng 1TD
9/14/08 — 2REC – 22 Yds 14Lng 0TD
12/16/07 — 5REC- 79 Yds 46Lng 0TD
09/09/07 — 9REC – 183 Yds 51Lng 1TD

Ironically the only TD since the start of the 2008 season came when the freshly activated Ty Law was in coverage. Meanwhile, while the two of them are in synch much more than Week 1, it’s Wes Welker that’s the threat the Jets need to worry about. I heard a stat on the radio today that Brady and Welker are currently scorching the past four weeks the two have a 90.4% with a target/completion percentage.

  1. How many people would rather have Revis on Welker the entire game and have a double team of Lowrey/Sheppard and Rhodes on Moss?

  2. No way, Moss can kill you.

  3. Welker is a Pat and I hate him, but he reminds me of a more athletic version of one of my all time favs, Wayne Chrebet.
The similarity in size, fearlessness over the middle and great hands is definitely there.

Loved me some Lil Green flashlight

  4. You would not be able to play the same kind of d if Revis wasn’t on Moss

  5. …..yea thats a terrible idea

  6. I agree about Revis, care to trade him for our entire secondary?

  7. Revis is excellent… but Randy Moss is Randy Moss. The defense will either roll coverage, or they will get burned.

  8. Unless I am wrong. I am pretty sure Revis didnt start that first game when Moss had 180yds. Im sure it was Barret. Besides that game the one he had 70+yds, that long of 46 was against Barret also.

  9. Ronnie I said the same thing this afternoon— one-on-one welker will kill us — if you double someone i think it would make more sense to have revis take away welker and double Moss. No???

  10. ^^ That’s what I thought as well.

If we take away Welker, Brady will have a real hard time orchestrating big/long scoring drives.
Welker keeps drives going on 3rd down or makes easier 3rd downs.

  11. I dont think we have to change what we do, we have to adjust to what the Pats do.

They put Moss in the slot alot and/or move him in motion to get him a free release.

Bottom line is, Revis has PROVEN that he can nuetralize Randy Moss, the proof is in the stat line.

The Jets problem is if they tackle against Welker, Faulk and Watson like they did last week against Jax, the Pats will go up and down the field all day…

Pats will score more than 9 pts this time but Florio needs to get a grip bc Ill be shocked if they score 30

  12. I love Revis…he can control Moss—but what about Welker. I think you would need to double him, Lowery or Sheppard cannot cover Welker alone. To me, if you are going to double someone, it would make more sense to double Moss.

  13. If you remember the game Moss scored his touchdown, the Jets had a lot of success putting Revis on Welker and almost straight up doubling moss with Law jamming him at the line and a safety behind hm.

That’s what made moss’s (late) td so infuriating- for some reason law dropped about fifteen yards off the line and got killed. Until I see them beat this, I think this was the best look I’ve seen against the Pats offense.

  14. Jon.

What we did last game was extremely more impressive. 9 points with Brady

Matt Cassel, MATT FREAKIN CASSEL had over 300 yrds on us. and like 27 points.

  15. we wont be able to blitz like we do if revis isn’t on moss. We will be blitzing more DBs. Keep the LBs over the middle for those short dump passes to welker and fulk. which means we will need to have revis shut down the big play threat, which is randy moss.

we need the blitz brady all game to keep him unsettled because if he settles down, we will not win the game.

  16. agreed, start at the root of the problem, attack brady.

  17. relentlessly

  18. Last year in New England the Jets did put Revis on Welker. They put Ty Law and constant safety help on Moss. It’ll be interesting to see if they go back to that coverage on sunday

  19. No coverage will work unless the front 7 smack brady around. the D should probably focus on that more.
