Sanchez on His Sunday Presser

by Bassett on November 19th, 2009 at 10:53 am

Sanchez apologized for his Jaguars postgame presser yesterday to the New York media, chalking it up to youthful inexperience and an eagerness to credit his teammates and take the blame for the loss.

“I just changed things up a little bit,” Sanchez said Wednesday. “I thought I had everything figured out, of course, as a 23-year-old rookie would, but probably not the best way to go about it. It didn’t go over very well, so, trial and error and hopefully a one-time mistake.”

If we’ve seen anything, it’s that Sanchez is a quick study.

Sanchez said he sat at his locker after the 24-22 loss and wrote out his thoughts in anticipation of what he might be asked. He then went to the podium and quickly read from the sheet, rattling off specific key plays and offering a summary of what happened in the loss before taking questions.

“Once I got up there, I kind of got rolling with it and kept going,” he said. “I won’t do that again.”

The awkward moment rubbed some in the media the wrong way as Sanchez was criticized for appearing immature, disrespectful and unprofessional. After thinking about it, Sanchez said he was wrong to have a prepared statement.

“I answer the questions and you guys ask the questions,” he said. “That’s the rule. I’m not here to do your job, just like you’re not here to do mine. That wasn’t the most respectful thing to you guys and ladies. As much as I anticipate the questions and want to have an idea of what’s coming my way, it’s not my job to say, ‘All right, the press conference is over.’”

Apologizing for eating hotdogs and now for preparing statements? You have to feel bad for the kid. Still, Sanchez is extremely teachable, and seems pretty humble when it comes to “doing the right thing” … even when he didn’t really do anything that bad in the first place.

I don’t know how most of the press felt about it at the time, but it was mentioned enough by enough people last weekend that folks clearly thought it was a strange way to start the presser.

In theory, I don’t have a problem with Mark’s prepared words … Rex Ryan does it everytime he’s up there. When players are signed or drafted, they generally have some prepared statements. That’s not the problem with what he did. Where eyebrows were raised was when (1) it seemed out of character and disjointed for Sanchez, and (2) in some ways, dictatorial.

I think Mark hit it on the head by saying that “I answer the questions and you guys ask the questions.” Still, it sounds like the intent was nothing more than wanting to credit his teammates for their actions, and point out his own mistakes. It’s not a big deal, he’s learned his lesson, and I don’t see it as something worth dwelling on.

Moving along …

Players and coaches prepare statements every week and Sanchez stayed after his statement and answered all the media’s questions. As Bassett said….moving along….

So Rich Cimini was offended. BFD. He sounds like an @ss anyway. These are not the droids you’re looking for….move along…

  3. avatar JL says:

Cimini is a JERK. To call the kid’s ‘prepared’ statement bizarre was hyperbole. Thanks to the video clip we could see for ourselves that it was a defensive tactic from a young, prideful guy who’s taken some lumps in the press this year.

What the heck did he need to apologize for? I’m still trying to understand the hotdog apology.

  4. avatar MEL31602 says:

JL- I think the issue more was when he said “You guys shouldn’t have any questions but if you do I’ll answer them” or something to that effect. That was more what I had the issue with.

This isn’t news. He did what pros do every single week. It’s not like he talked all week about the game being his team’s Superbowl, then disappeared from the locker room after the game before the press could talk to him (ahem*Antonio Pierce – just the Giants defensive captain, not a rookie). Enough already. Cimini needs to relax.

Bassett good analysis, its actually like if I had to write something about this…I would have wrote the exact same thing…wierd

i would have been one thing if he read from a sheet and said, “ok presser is over” and walked out. but he still stuck around and answered all of their questions

he is still just a rookie, but part of me wishes that for stupid things like this presser and the hotdog, that just get totally blown up by the media, he wouldnt apologize and just say, “eff it”.

Just another attempt by the NY press to browbeat and bully a newbie, and of course, make themselves part of the story — which, they tend to forget is not a part of the job.

    Move on, please!

I don’t now how other people feel about this but the NY media is getting way out of hand now. Rex Ryan was a highlight article on Yahoo yesterday because he teared up during an emotional speech he gave to his team. How the hell does that create “front page” news? We aren’t even talking about football anymore. This media is getting into every Jet fan’s head now. We spend most of our time arguing with hank/naples on this blog and deciding if Rex Ryan is the right coach because he got emotional in a meeting with his team. Its getting old. Now Sanchez has to apologize again for something that wasn’t even that bad or football related at all?

Give these people a damn break!! We are talking about rookies here. The media doesn’t seem to care that Kerry Rhodes is playing awful or that maybe we suck because we lost out two most important players on both sides of the ball. I just can’t believe the way these beat writers handle themselves sometimes. Its like they don’t even try to be football writers anymore… I guess working at TMZ or Perezhilton is more exciting nowadays.

I don’t have a problem being prepared, he just executed it poorly. He was all over the place. If he delivered it better, I don’t think it would have been as big a deal.

  11. avatar Will says:

Way way more important things to worry about than how he answered or didn’t answer questions. I’m already over all of this media blitz. Between Rex’s cry, Revis’s 1-1 w/Moss, Sanchez’s whatever it this week dilemma.

Lets win, at the end of the day the rest of the stuff will fall into place.

  12. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

I agree that the media makes a big deal out of non-issues…

I’ve said it before, i’ll say it again:
Watch the pressers on the Jets site.. It’s much more refreshing to do that.. You see 1st hand what the writers see and hear..
Except, you can form your own opinion rather than read an exaggerated account from a guy/gal who creates stories for a living..

Bassett, i’d be happy to provide you and the readers with an account of each presser once they’re posted.. i watch em all anyway..

  13. avatar Led says:

Sanchez is wise not to fight with the media. If apologizing for a hot dog or a prepared statement flatters the cro-magnons and makes his life easier, go for it. It’s all irrelevant to what happens on the field.

  14. avatar Harvlis says:

Good. Now we can worry about football.

I hate the media. With all the different things that we could talk about from the Jags game, the media was worrying about Sanchez’s post game statement. God forbid, they talk about football. Bottom line, they don’t know enough, to discuss the game intelligently. That is why we come here. The scary thing is — the media controls our society. You wonder why we are in sad shape as a country.

  15. avatar Joe B. says:

As someone who criticized him harshly for that stunt on Sunday, this is what I love about the kid: He quickly realizes and atones for his mistakes, both on and off the field. He said exactly what needed to be said and handled the situation yesterday like a true pro. As always, I’m proud he’s our quarterback.

  16. avatar DanFerr says:

I’m getting sick with all the primadonnas that have to find something to complain about Sanchez. If Brady or Manning did the same, no one would have said a thing. I think its the press’s way of hazing a rookie!
