As to Pete Carroll…
He knew he was in big trouble when Sanchez was going to leave. He had no QB with experience and was probably blind sided by the move since Sanchez’s father wanted him to stay also.
The facts are it was a great move by Sanchez since besides Stafford he was the clear top QB in the draft. If he would have waited a year he would have been in a pool of 3-5 1st round QB’s ( Clausen, Bradford, McCoy, maybe Tebow etc…) Not to mention that he has played a lot better than he been given credit. Yea he has throw picks but so does every young QB.
I think the kid is a star in the making. B-Schott pushed him a little too much after the 1st few games but has reeled him in and he has responded with some quality games and should have had a W last Sunday.

Yeah that throw into that D Lineman’s chest was the mark of a future star.
In all seriousness, don’t know how anyone can truly believe he is a “future star”. Hope he becomes one, sure, I am a Jets fan and I hope he goes to the HOF, but to truly believe that based on results, no way.
His play has been very mixed at this point, could go either way which is usually the case after nine games. This time next year we will begin to get the true picture, until then just have to sit back and hope for improvement.
Matt Ryan, last year’s model, has taken a turn for the worse lately. Vince Young is rebounding. Ya never know.
Too soon to tell, but I am rooting for him.

Sanchez will be fine. He’s on a decent offense, and he seems like he’s a hard worker. He’s already limited his fumbles from earlier in the season, and I think he’s got to work on his reads more and get the ball out faster. Also his accuracy needs work. Both of these are skills that develop over time. Honestly people have to lighten up on this guy. No one is polished coming in, especially not a one-year starter from college. He has exceeded my expectations, certainly,.
Lets give him at least 3 years – same as they gave monumental bust JaMarcus Russell in Oakland. Keep Sanchez with the level of talent he has right now and let him develop. If he has not improved by 2012, then get rid of him. Just because he’s not HOF bound after 9 games into his 1st season is not reason enough to bench him.
-
This isn’t rivalry week– The same way the Yankees/Red Sox wasn’t a rivalry until 2004. When one team always wins, its a feud.
And plus, Miami is the Jets Rival, not NE.
The Jets need playmakers on the DL and especially the secondary. Revis isn’t a playmaker because he is too amazing– no one even bothers going near him. We need the dynamic safety to make people pay.

Wise Old Jet Fan:
I can’t believe how delusional Jets fans trully are.
“Poor Franchez, our Hero and Savior of our franchize. He is Just a Rookie, give him time!!!”
While all along the fact that he entered the draft when he did was totally and completely motivated by the hunger for $$$$$.
How else would you explain turning your back on you School, Your Father figure coach, and your family?
By realizing that NOT staying that extra year, only Stafford would likely be his major competitor.
He knew then that Tebow, Bradfor and McCoy were giving up those extra millionsand returning for their senior year.
He dismissed allprior histiry professional and family advice and even his school
-
I agree that you can’t judge Sanchez quite yet. There are a lot of things to like, and not too many not to like right now, because most of his negative plays and reads and reactions are things that can be taught and learned and fixed with experience, while the things he has done well are unteachable. The grey area always lies within his learning curve. Some QBs need a year, some need more, some just don’t have the capacity to make it at the next level. Browning Nagle comes to mind as a QB who got to each level on his talent and his limited ability to learn, which didn’t affect his college days or early NFL days. Once they figured him out he was toast in this league. There is almost no way to know if MS has that capacity, but he is a bright kid and so far seems to accept the challenges of NY and the media.
One thing I think he needs is a QB behind him who has that capacity to learn, to show MS what he needs to learn. To me, Kellen Clemens falls into the category of Nagle, someone with a hell of an arm and loads of talent, but just doesn’t have the capacity to utilize his experience to succeed at this level.
I know it’s not possible, but I would love to just release Clemens at this point and bring in a veteran guy who can help Sanchez learn. Clemens is not that guy for him (nor is OConnell or Ainge obviously)
-
Kewpie to Drew for correctly assessing the real reason for Sanchez’ decision (or at least why it was a brilliant move).
Additionally, if starting for Petey would have been a good thing, starting for the Jets has to be on a par. Both teams have professional level facilities, coaches, film rooms, etc.
While the Jets may suffer in the short term, in the long term Sanchez benefits from being a top 5 pick and getting a lot more money for the next five years. The Jets were able to get a Qb who is learning on the job (and less painfully than most rook Qbs who play with much inferior talent on the OL and D, exposing themselves to more pain and beatings).
Petey got caught without an adequate Qb. Bad recruiting. Life is tough and then you die.

If Franchez doesn’t improve, we DON’T go to the playoffs, Plain and simple!.
So by saying tha ” …. If he has not improved by 2012, then get rid of him” , you are willing to live with THE SOJ for THREE more years?
-
The Chose Me — I think you nailed it. The Ryan defenses thrive on someone making a play, and Rhodes was supposed to be that guy. Right now his defense is playing well, holding and bending and rarely breaking… but missing that element that goes with a total successful defense — the big play.
If Kerry Rhodes was having the rebound year that Rex promised, this team would have 2-3 more wins I think. How many games did we lose by one score late, that we could have finished them with a defensive play or two (Miami twice, Buffalo, Jax). If in just half of those games he made a late play, like a pick or a sack or a forced fumble, or even just a defended pass or two — the things he did so well in 2007 — we’d have two more wins and be sitting pretty.
Not to put everything at the feet of Kerry Rhodes, but he is clearly the player that has stepped back the most in this regard, and has the capabilities to do these things.

Harlan:
All is well, but allow me one question: Why would the above mentioned three, mostly superior, future NFL starting QB’s, ALL returned for their senior year?
-
WOJF
For the record that DL/OLB should have been cut blocked on that play….that is basic blocking 101 when a play like that is called. While Sanchez should have read that player in space the guy was not blocked at all to give Sanchez a lane to throw that pass.
He has continued to improve in all areas. You can tell he is looking off players and has more pocket awarness than 3 weeks ago. He already understands his mistakes and normally dosent make them twice. It also helps that they have toned down asking him to throw 35 x a game.
The kids has every tool on top of the moxie to play the position. Does that translate into star….not always but I like what the kid has shown 9 games in.

I cannot begin to tell you how much my weekend just improved with a kewpie from Harlan…

Hollowod Rhodes need to stop his self orchestrated PR campaign, shut his mouth and focus on football NOT, tweeting, or bloging, or texting,or acting, or comedy, or sport shows, or discoing,or…..get the picture?
Fonzie has been saying that from day one and has been critisized from all the frontrunner/wagoneers on this blog.
He was even called on it by holowodd himself. (Doesn’t he have anyhting football to do?)
I bet you that Hollowood will now blame Fonzie for cooking up that VOODO DOLL.

Hank, we’ve lived with the SOJ for 40 years, whats three more? Think of how long Broncos fans lived with Elway, or how Colts fans endured Peyton Manning’s. I dont know if Sanchez is HOF caliber like those guys, but the point is, that there is a bit of a learning curve and the best thing to do is to surround Sanchez with talent and let him come into his own. Hell, Eli Manning’s curve sure looked like Sanchez’s.
I really dont think that Sanchez has been the main culprit this season. I think its been a lack of fundamentals: poor tackling, poor catching, bad blocks, blown coverages, even Sanchez’s fumbling earlier this season. This comes down own the coaches and I’m dismayed that Ryan has offered little more than empty platitudes rather than improving his team’s play. I think the coaches should spend less time scheming and more time actually coaching. I’m fine with vanilla plays as long as I see the right performance.
-
Rothlisebrger did okay coming out as an underclassman.
It’s certainly hard to argue against the evidence Carroll cited about most junior 1st round QB’s, and I personally don’t doubt that Sanchez would have been aided by another year running the Trojan offense. It’s not an exact science, however, and there are other factors that go into a decision like that for both player and club drafting him. as others have mentioned.
So far, there’s no evidence that the decision was disastrous. There’s also no evidence it was a spectacular success. His play in the first nine games has moved me slightly more towards the optimistic side. Then again, I was plenty worried about the move up to take him at 5.
-
Obviously the player should have been blocked but plays rarely go the way they are drawn up, that throw was horrible and he had/has done similar previously.
Like I wrote, his eventual upside is still up in the air, he might make it, he might not, I just do not see the progress perhaps that some of you see and I still think his size is a problem that might not be able to be overcome.
Plenty of time to improve, agree we now have to wait the requistite 3 years, but disappointing to those who believed the hype from the front office, coach and media who claimed they could win now with the rook.
I never did and was against drafting him from day one not necessarily because I disliked him but I just found it difficult to reconcile drafting a rookie, and hiring a rookie HC, by a team that I thought was a potential contender as constructed at the end of 2008.
My plan at the time:
1.) fire Mangini and the entire coaching staff except westoff.
2.)hire a credible vet head coach, allow him to pick his staff and be involved with talent evaluation
3.) Consider retaining the solid NFL players that were here if possible (baker, barton, coleman and coles, not Farve).
4.) Obtain a vet QB to manage a run oriented offense
5.) Improve the defense through the draft and with a few select free agents. Then draft a QB in 2010 when the class is deep.
Now we will have to watch BUF, CLE and maybe even the Raiders bring in quality people while we wait and hope Rex and Mex can get us to the next level.
-
hank/naples — let me ask you this: do you think whatever it is you or your son do for a living is affected by posting comments on this blog in your downtime? Do you think you would be better off spending those 12 minutes on your job? Rhodes tweets a few times a day, spending probably 5 minutes of his downtime on it, I don’t see how that affects his play.
-
Wide Old — it’s debatable whether the players you allude to are any better than Mex, and we’d have to wait an extra year to let them develop. Also debatable whether any of the available vet coaches last year would be any more successful in three years than Rex (since next year we’d have a rookie QB).
-
I think by this time next year all those with the itchy trigger fingers already claiming that Sanchez [or even Rex for that matter] are a “bust” will be proven resoundingly WRONG.
As alluded above by ‘Shamik’, ‘greg sec 130′ and some others, he has clearly shown progress and natural ability in some of the more crucial aspects of QB’ing in the NFL, and whatever problem areas he’s displayed are to be expected for a first year 22/23 yr old rookie who didn’t even complete his final year in College ball, for chrissakes…
I think one of his more impressive features is his ability to learn/pick things up quickly, and without a “veteran” QB to whisper in his ear, a la Pennington/Testaverde from prior years [plus, Schott didn't make things much easier on him by opening up the playbook too early on the rookie, perhaps overwhelming him a bit... although Schott seems to have adjusted his strategy a bit the last couple games, and it shows in Sanchez's play: he's been more consistent and less prone to egregious errors].
I’m going to make the [not so] bold claim and say Sanchez will be much improved by next year, along with Rexy, and we’ll be a far stronger unit because of it.
We may not make it this year, but next year I think we’ll be the team we saw those first 3 games of ’09, but spread out to the whole season… In other words, we won’t have to wait 3 years.
Of course, is they win this Sunday, there’s always the possibility it may spark some momentum and inspire them to go on a monstrous run and unlikely playoff berth, but I won’t set myself up for such lofty fantasies….. not until next year, that is…
-
Anyone who says Sanchez hasn’t shown improvement isn’t watching the games, or just needs to go back and watch the Tenn., NO, and Buffalo games. There were enough mistakes in those games to fill out a laundry list 100 issues long. What I’ve seen from sanchez the past few weeks is improvement in a few key problem areas.
He doesn’t stare down just one receiver anymore. He has learned how to hold a safety and give his guys an extra step or two to get open.
Ball Security. My God, I’m sure we were all pulling our hair out earlier this year. I must have screamed “IT’S NOT A LOAF OF BREAD SON!!!!” at my TV a hundred times. He’s better at keeping two hands on the ball, and while he does still one-hand it, he does it more when he’s pressured out of the pocket, rather than doing it in traffic.
Decision making. He’s definitely gotten better at finding open receivers and dumping the ball to check-down options. He isn’t forcing as many passes.
I’ll stop there, but those were 3 of my major concerns after the group of bad games. He’s definitely showing improvement though, and in areas where he had the most problems, which shows he can identify his issues and get to work on them right away. The kid’s got the mental makeup, the physical toughness, and the physical tools to be a very good QB and all signs are pointing towards him reaching that potential.
-
I think Ht is a little overrated when it comes to the QB position. Everyone would love to have the 6’5 230 QB but there plenty of cases of 6’1 – 6’3 QB’s that have had alot of success…… D Brees, K Warner, A Rodgers, M Bulger, T Romo are all starters that have gone to the Pro Bowl….and even won a ring…
Plus I dont recall one play this year that his size was an issue in a play.
-
Shamik;
I respect your opinion and completely agree with you. I wasn’t shure if you were expecting both sides of the coin, as are most fans of this blog ie. giving Franchez time while demanding we win every game !!!
The important thing is for the players, this team, the fans, to take an ojective look at themselves and improve every day.
One other comment, I don’t have Direct TV, threw them out, so I don’t get to see the Jets every sunday, but from what I’ve seen, he is NOT the culprit for this season but, he is directly resposible for two loses.

Please contimue reading my comments that “Hollowod Rhodes needs to stop his self orchestrated PR campaign, shut his mouth and focus on football NOT, tweeting, or bloging, or texting,or acting, or comedy, or sport shows, or discoing,or…..get the picture?”
It looks like you stopped reading at “tweeting”
Also, let me remindyou that Fonzie was the first to point this out:
“I think as coaches we all want to be of the mindset that our guys are all going to be gym rats and football junkies and when they leave here, they’re going to go home and study tape. Not everyone is like that.’’
“Rhodes, who doesn’t deny he’s not a homebody, said his main concern is to not force anything and stay disciplined, let the game come to him.”
The question is: “Where and When? While he is doing everthing NON FOOTBALL?
-
hank/naples –
I know you wrote more after tweeting, but since the article that was posted above in the Daily Links says Rhodes has only filmed one commercial in the past year and has not done any other acting, comedy, sports shows, etc since the season started, I assumed you didn’t contimue reading the story and let that error on your part go.
-
So the question is: if he is only tweeting, what else is he doing in his hours and hours of personal time a day that is non-football, as you claim?
And that’s great that you at least found the quotes at the end of the article that suit your argument, but if you recall, two years ago Rhodes was criticized by Mangini for not allowing other players into the many hours of film study he was doing with Vilma, asking him to teach younger players how he does it so well. Rhodes and Vilma would review film every day of the week, at night. Are you suggesting that he no longer does what made him so successful in 2007? What is he doing with all his time? Or do you think he is lying about the one commercial and is taking acting classes and filming underground videos instead of film study.
-
Hank,
I assume you were talking about Sanchez when you said “he lost 2 games this year” a few posts ago. I’d agree that he lost the NO game. The pressure got in his head and he was jumpy in the pocket and was thrown off his game. Hey, facing a 3-0 team on the road in that dome is a tough game, and it got to him. He’s a rookie so that’s expected at least a few times. The Buffalo game was more his fault than anyone else’s, but that was a team-wide loss. The defense let Buffalo drive down to win the game, Hartsock had the holding penelty, Sanchez’s 5 picks. I’ll give you the NO was on Sanchez, but Buffalo was more of an across-the-board loss, IMO.
-
Pete Carroll was 100% correct. However, even if he did stay in college another year, he would have still had to go through the trials and tribulations of a first year in the NFL. Now he is half-way through it and next year, he will no longer be a rookie making rookie mistakes. I’m glad he came out early and I’m glad we traded up to get him. He will be good over time as he gains more experience. You can’t get any more prepared tor better playing against the Patriots or the Dolphins by playing against the Oregon Ducks or Oregon State Beavers, despite how good they are…you get better playing agains the Patriots and Dolphins.
-
Sanchez would definitely have a better rookie year if he stayed school. But would he be better next year as a rookie than he will be as a second year player? I doubt it. From a career and financial standpoint, his decision was a home run. He was a top 6 pick by a team with talent to be competitive in the near term. Usually, to get the huge first contract he got, you gotta play for a team more like the Browns, which ultimately limits your long term career and earning potential. Sanchez got the best of both worlds. I don’t think there’s even a reasonable argument that, as it turned out, he made the wrong decision.
-
greg:
If I did n’t already ans. your first question with everything he is doing AWAY from football with his spare time, I don’t know what else to say.
As far as film study, Vilma ( film addict) recruited Rhodes, and others, to watch film @ his house.
When Vilma left, “supposedly” Harris and Rhodes picked up the ritual at the begginig but never heard anything after that. The fact is, the quote I posted substantiates the argument that Rhodes needs to focus alot more of his free time on FOOTBALL, i, end of sentence.
Mangini got him off his ass, put him in the position to exceed in ’06, signs a $ 38 million Ext. then rips Mangini after he leaves. The man just talks ALOT, should Shut up and focus MORE on football.

david i:
You guys are soo sure that Franchez will be, you know Franchize. I’m not too sure, although I hope you all are right!!!!
Some things I see ie. inablity to see whole field, pocket presence, emotional fortitude do not translate easily to the NFL. That is what separates the men from the boys. You need more that a ” cannon arm”
But like I said, I hope Y’all are right
-
Hank, there have been perhaps 3 rookie QBs that have the “pocket presence and emotional fortitude that translates easily to the NFL” that you demand to come into the league this decade: Roethlisburger, Ryan, and Flacco. Even now Ryan and Flacco are rounding out into better QBs. It takes time, Hank.
For example, I’m a medical student right now, and even though it would be nice if I could just hit the ground running after I graduate and start treating patients like a pro, its just not realistic. Theres a reason they call it a medical “practice” and thats why I’ll be spending years being supervised in residency after graduating before finally starting to treat patients on my own. Its very similar to the NFL, Sanchez is paying his dues and taking his lumps now. With a bit of practice and hard work, he should be up there with the best. Surely you can admit that he has some potential and has shown signs of improvement?
-
Those are the same three things they said Peyton Manning didn’t have his first season. You think Sanchez is sulking on the bench and handling himself like a kid at pressers, you obviously missed Manning’s first season in Indy. People probably thought his head naturally looked down at his feet.
-
Hey what do you guys think about Dan WIlliams out of Tennessee for a NT?
-
Wise Old Jet Fan, 2010 QB class is looking a bit overrated in my opinion.
Colt McCoy- Ultimate effort guy, leader but not an elite prospect. Lacks physical tools- the anti-Jamarcus if you will.
Tim Tebow- skill set will not translate to current pass-happy era of NFL. Fact that he is big but not especially tall with a questionable release may not bode well for him.
Jimmy Clausen- The elite prospect that McCoy is not. But Clausen lacks the experience playing marquee teams throughout his career. Has struggled against mediocre teams like Purdue, Pitt and USC this year.
Zac Robinson, Jevan Snead and Sam Bradford have all had disappointing seasons for various reasons.Hank, would you like him better if Mangini drafted him? Sanchez has at least shown he has the tools to be great. What else has he shown? That he makes mistakes like a rookie. Even that Matt Ryan guy who’s name gets thrown around a lot in the conversation has struggled immensely these past few weeks. The bottom line is Sanchez has shown us promise. Brady Quinn, Jamarcus Russell, Matt Leinart… they showed their teams nothing.
Also Pete Carroll was right- he needed Sanchez badly this year. Had Sanchez stayed the Trojans might have been vying for a National Championship bid. Instead they’re dragging their feet to their first non-BCS bowl in nearly a decade.
-
Igs, I think it’s important to realize we will never be able to replace Kris Jenkins. Dan Williams is definitely a prospect worth looking at but I’d be more interested in his explosiveness and technique come combine time. His size is impressive on paper but from what I’ve seen, he might be playing at a weight a little too heavy for his frame. “Smaller” guys like Casey Hampton have proven they can play the NT position and are the kind of players we should look for. Can Williams be that kind of guy? Maybe. His recent production has been impressive though.
-
*the Steeler’s Casey Hampton
-
East, thanks for your response. I wouldn’t bet on Jenkins playing a full season again. His injury history vs his age vs his weight vs his position just don’t bode well. If not completely replacing him, I think it should be a priority to grab his replacement in the next draft.
I haven’t watched Tennessee play, but I caught some buzz about Williams on draft countdown and I really like his weight vs. size ratio – which I think, along with strength – is what makes a good NT.
Of course Mt. Cody stays on the brain.
-
*eventual replacement

Congrats and good luck with your chosen career. My daughter is also studying medicine, at Ole Miss. She is a junior in BS program with a major in Biology. A very noble profession.
I agree Sanchez needs experience to develop his talent. He does have great upside. He also needs to grow up a lot and learn to chose his rhetoric carefully.
My biggest beef is that I feel they gave up too much for this kid and they sold his PR campaign as thesec -

Hmmm, interesting line of thinking Hank. I’m sure you’d be getting less flack if you’d phrased it that way in the beginning. However, I think it was clear that we needed to settle on the QB situation. Pennington wasn’t cutting it, he’s was a great guy, but just couldnt stay healthy. I think Clemons got the short end of the stick, but we really don’t have anything to base any projections on him on. I don’t think any of the guys we sent to Cleveland are really doing that well (I don’t watch any of their games), but fact is, we’ve got the kid and from the beginning he’s shown heart and a willingness to work hard and learn. He didnt worry about his contract – he grabbed the playbook from day one and began to study and practice with the team. He’s been fine dealing with the media, and he’s been getting better with time. Sanchez is the hand we’ve been dealt, but I think its a decent one. Only time will tell.
-
Greg, while three years from now certainly matters, my point is, and I believe it is indisputable, that the Jets would be better THIS year with had they hired a successful proven vet HC and brought in a competant vet QB.
The slide back was/is entirely predictable, and since I felt they could make a run this year with a quality head coach and minor roster tinkering I am very disappointed having to sit through a rebuilding year.
The key was obviously to find a veteran QB that could get the job done while competing with Clemens, whethar they could have gotten lucky in that regard is debateable but if they did they could have made a run.
Led, I will never argue with Sanchez, or anyone projected to be a first round pick, coming out early. Clearly it was the right move for him personally, he is set for life.
How he handles the next 7 weeks will determine if it was the right move for him from a long term career perspective.
I do argue with the Jets need to draft him, and a rookie RB, at this particular time in their history.
But he is here now and I am rooting for him to show improvement as the season continues, by this time tomorrow a few more pieces to the puzzle will have been filled in.
-
Hank, agree entirely with your beefs and original comments too.
I DO believe that selling PSL’s was one of the factors in the decision to draft Sanchez, which explains in part the illogical move of drafting a QB of the future for a win now team.
-
Shamik, I gotta agree with you. I actually think Sanchez is ahead of the curve. You gotta remember when we were looking at Sanchez in the draft, the guy could do everything but he didn’t have a lot of experience. I thought the answer to that would be to draft him and sit him for a year. But Clemens didn’t show enough to beat him out in camp.
The guy is literally a perfect QB – outside of being a little short and a little immature. Those things wont last long. He’ll adjust to his height disadvantage and he’ll grow up. And he’ll prove to be a worthy investment.
I think it was a great trade. But like I keep saying, you can fnd a good reason to make any of these trade that I’ve been complaining about. (Even Shonne Green if the Sanchez trade had not already gone down.) But you just can’t do it every year? And you can’t do it every year 2 times per draft.
-
Anyone blaming Sanchez on where we are right now is out of their mind. I’m looking forward to seeing Sanchez as our QB for the next 12 to 15 years. He is the least of our problems. He is a rookie! a few weeks ago this site compared his stats to other rookie QB’s at this point there rookie year and he stacks up nicely. We’ve lost to dolphins twice because of defense and special teams. We lost to the Jags because NO ONE on defense could a make play when they needed it most. The problem with this team is a lack of defensive playmakers and rookie coaching decisions (including shotty, his calls can baffle at times). The JETs have had the chance to close a few games with a defensive stop and we couldn’t do it. Who on this team steps up when the game is on the line? who is the derek jeter of this team? who is it’s leader? no one! not rhodes, not b. scott, not revis, not ellis, no one. Who is going to make the big play when we need it? Bryan thomas? no. Pace? no. David Harris? maybe, he is a true stud. But seriously, who steps up when we need it most?
-
Bent – I don’t think that comment is off at all because the exceptions I point out in that statement are very tangible. As I said, Sanchez can adjust to being a QB that doesn’t stand very tall. That’s just an experience issue. He will also grow out of his immaturity (also an experience issue.)
Comparing a rookie QB that has all the intangibles but needs to grow up and adjust some to a kicker that the idiot Terry Bradway drafted in the 2nd round and kept missing field goals and screwing up kickoffs is a totally different deal.

I have been a big Kerry Rhodes supporter and have been killed for it ( for the most part) the last 4 weeks.
I have not given up on him but after last weeks defensive disaster this defense and Kerry have to step and will this team to a win Sunday.
I dont care if he gets a pick or just plays a good enough game to win….nobody cares about the big plays if you win…..just go win the damn game.
Everything else will fall into place.
