Question Two: Around the Corner
If anything, last night’s loss presented more questions than answers about this team. Today we’ll be writing up a number of them, one post at a time …
Moss or Revis? Did he or didn’t he? Man Coverage or Cover One-Two-Three? Is Revis legit? I think we can all agree that those questions are irrelevant. Moss had a touchdown on Revis, yes, but from the four yard line on a bang-bang play. That same play would have been successful anywhere on the field, it just happened to be in the end zone. After 15 receptions for more than 320 yards and three TDs in two games (Miami and @ Indianapolis) Moss had five receptions for 34 yards and one TD.
For as well as Revis played, the injuries to Strickland and Lowery showed what an incomplete secondary this team has from that top slot. Shutting down one side of the field is commendable, but when the slot or the other side is open like a barn door, does it matter? Welker had a career game against the Jets, and the Jets showed that they don’t have the personnel to stop him. Last night Revis talked in his press conference that to shut down Welker, you have to play him physical at the line, and not let him get a free release.
Lito Sheppard isn’t built for that sort of play, and with a $10 million bonus waiting in the offseason, there’s no chance that the Jets continue to keep the CB into next year at that rate. So what do the Jets do on the other side of the field from now to the end? Lowery left the locker room in a boot, and Strickland will likely be out with a concussion for a while.
Between now and the end of the season, the Jets need to get some answers as to their own corners on the roster for next year, and starting thinking about making it a priority in the offseason. What type of players do the Jets need to find to play the CB2? Should they prioritize someone who can play the slot? Revis is great, but he needs someone who can be relied on on the other side. The Sheppard gambit failed, so what now?

clone revis?
But that’s the problem teams have had for years now – shut down Moss, get a good dose of Welker. Last week, the Colts shut down Welker, and the result was two long bombs to Moss. The answer is to have a good, deep team, not a good Corner Back (aka Revis Island).
Oh, and “bang bang” my ***, Revis wasn’t even looking.
I know we have injuries to our CBs…but I was shocked to see Welker so open so many times. Revis can be left alone, why cant we shift coverage to welker? there was one time, welker was in the slot, and eric smith was lined up on him, but he was faking the blitz, so welker had a few yards for a free break off the line, ball is snapped, and smith is in no posistion to regain coverage on welker…welker gets open and 15 yard completion down the middle of the field…why?
forget the blitz scheme, welker was left wide open? how? unbelievable.
revis was looking, he was just looking at randy moss. bang bang, TD. cant really fault him there. moss even faked him by throwing his hand up like it’d be a jump ball.
Yes, revis should have peaked at Brady, then he’d be able to make a play, but i really cant nitpick him on that.
Look to the draft. We need CB depth, and depth for Jenkins. Those are my top prioritites for next years draft.
TANNY SHOULD HAVE PURSUED JABARI GREER I
NSTEAD OF LITO HE WAS A FREE AGENT AND WE COULD HAVE KEPT OUR DRAFT PICKS. FOR EVERY GOOD MOVE ANNY MAKES HE COUNTERS WITH A BAD ONE. HIRE ACCORSI TO HELP HIM.
Revis and his game no no defending. The guy has become the best CB in the league. The Patriots, Moss and the rest of the league know it…. The point is unless we get a guy that can do anything opposite him…..it dosent matter.
Just go watch an Oakland game. They have an All Pro corner and they just ignore in when hes on the field.
Revis backed up his out of character talk this week by allowing basically zero to Moss. Moss and Brady even tried late to get one over on him. Revis is a great piece to have but he will be wasted if nobody else covers anyone.
Most teams don’t have – and can’t afford – two shut down corners like Revis. The Jets should say goodbye to Shephard, focus on depth and try to find/develop a quick, shifty nickel back in the Mickens mold. But they also need to hammer a guy like Welker right out of the gate. Have a LB or safety level the kid on the first series. God knows other teams did it to Chrebet, who is probably the reason BB sought and incorporated a player like Welker into his offense.
I gotta say, when Lito was healthy, he wasn’t that bad. And thats a solid #2, and Lowery was a solid #3…even strickland hasn’t been bad. but thats it. no depth. I cant fault the Lito trade, he got hurt, thats not Tanny’s fault, in fact b/c he got hurt, the trade value is lowered anyways.
Last year, our team holed up some important spots (MLB, FS, QB, RB, WR) now we can use the draft to pinpoint weaks spots. we dont need a complete rebuild, we can focus on particular positions (DT, CB, DE-OL-Depth). thats why its not a big deal tanny traded away draft picks.
one thing is for sure..David Harris owns the middle of the field. He flattened welker on one play and was repeatedly making plays sideline to sideline.
Revis, a god-send.. really.. I’m glad he’s a Jet.. Definitely the best in the league..
Sheppard is gone.. he played well when he wasn’t gimpy.. Not worth the bonus though.. no way.
I don’t know of any team that can stop both Moss and Welker.. if you shut down 1, the other will kill you..
Lowry will be good.. he’ll be a Ray Mickens type.. an effective slot/nickel type, who can start and succeed most of the time.
I do expect Rex & Co. to go after someone new in the offseason though..
Rhodes, is it me or does he seem like a completely differnt player (in a bad way)? I get the impression that he just doesn’t fit in…
stickland is a tough SOB.. i like him.. but he gets hurt a lot.. i hope he sticks around though..
Mangini gameplanned differently and stopped/contained both in one game, I remember.
He double teamed Moss with Ty Law and Rhodes deep, and isolated Revis on Welker.
Of course it is pick your poison, as I think the RB’s and TE’s had huge days.
Strickland and Lowery going down really limited what they could do, should probably have moved Revis onto Welker.
yeah, ive been impressed with strickland’s toughness..he hits hard and isn’t afraid of making the tackle (I’m looking right at you kerry rhodes)
If Harris “owns the middle of the field” Welker must have swindled him out of it.
It’s everything I said after the Fins loss, the untested unproven jesters failed in NY
If you saw Rex’s post-game, it was clear he won’t accept a lack of aggressive physical play from his defense and KR must be in his crosshairs. Why wouldn’t Welker feel confident doing whatever he wants in the middle of the field when there’s no price to pay?
welker is tough, simple as that. did you miss the hit Harris laid on him? Plus Harris owns the short-middle…its not his fault that Welker is wide-open 15 yards down the middle of the field.
Why do you keep censoring my comments, it’s not my fault the Jets Suck, it’s everything I said a few weeks ago we beat a bunch of crappy teams and now when we face anybody with a shred of a good team we loose
TJB: We haven’t censored your comments, they’re just going via the moderation queue because of repeated previous examples of name calling and personal attacks. As long as your comments do not contain these things, they will get posted on the site.
Lowery’s injury serves the Jets right for risking their fourth string CB on kickoff returns.
Lowery’s injury is why you dont put Revis back on PR’s
starz31- What gives you the impression I’m blaming Harris for Welker’s success? The only big hit Welker took was from Harris, but Harris has many other responsibilities. How about a safety making him pay for a catch over the middle or chucking him out of his cleats at the LOS?
Ok, if I was Rex Ryan…
I would fire Brian Schottenhiemer, and immediatly promote Bill Callahan to OC. I would also talk to Curtis Martin about possibly coming in to help groom Shaun Greene, and Leon Washington because I have a feeling this may be Thomas Jones’ last year. Well, I don’t have a feeling, it WILL be Thomas Jones’ last year because Tannenbaum will not pay him no matter how many yards he racks up this year.
Second, on defense I would bench Bryan Thomas, Kerry Rhodes, Marques Douglas and Lito Sheppard. I would give more playing time to Dwight Lowery, Marquice Cole, Eric Smith, Marques Murrrell, Jamaal Westerman, and I want to see Gholston play, I don’t care if he isn’t ready. We will see flashes from this guy if he is going to be anything in the NFL. If he shows us nothing, we know not to even play him next year. That saves us time and money to develop other players.
Third, on offense, I would keep Mark Sanchez in the saddle. Now with Schott gone, we can implement a pass protective, power running scheme. Something Schottenheimer has no handle on. Schott’s offense is ludicrous and he is possibly the most inept offensive gameplanner in the NFL right now. I am sick of seeing Thomas Jones on the sideline on 3rd down and Brad Smith in the slot. By the way, where are the screens to Danny Woodhead? This guy CANNOT come up with a good offensive gameplan, no matter who he faces. Look at Mangini’s Offensive Coordinator in Cleveland, and you’ll see how great of a judge of offensive talent this guy really was. Mangini doesn’t know offense, so he hired someone who thought he did. Unfortunately, Schottenheimer never did his job well, and has been coasting on the Jets since he was first hired. He needs to go TODAY, cut the strings and lets see if any team is stupid enough to hire him as a QB Coach let alone a Head Coach.
On offense, we need to bench Alan Faneca. The man is done as a guard, I don’t care how good of a Run Blocker he is. We got him past his prime, and Robert Turner needs to see the field in order to get better. I would also draft a LT in the first round, and move D’Brick to RT, and get rid of Woody. Moore is also a candidate to hit the road, if Slauson can pick it up.
Overall, this team is in for yet another rebuilding process. Don’t believe me?
HAHAHA.
Lito’s injury does not absolve Tannenbaum of blame. Lito was only available for trade because he was a health risk. When a team loses one of its starting CBs and then a backup CB (Strickland, Lowery), there isn’t much that anyone can do. However, if the plan was to count on Lito miraculously making it through the season unscathed and not having a serious replacement ready, then that was a mistake.
And I agree with trying to rough up Welker at the line. The dude is awesome in open space. Only thing is, outside of Revis, who is occupied with Moss, who in this downey-soft secondary has the necessary toughness and mean streak to execute this plan effectively? It sure isn’t Mr. Twitter. Rather, I think this is going to be a major problem for the rest of the year.
I still would prefer the team to draft depth for the OL and DL in the offseason. Lot of old guys on both those units.
Woodhead needs to be the returner or cut.
How about improving the pass rush? Brady had too much time to find Welker and Welker had too much time to find areas where the coverage was lax. That’s the no. 1 priority in the draft and/or off-season: acquire a bona fide DE/OLB pass rusher. If the offense has to worry about the QB’s blind side, Rex’s blitzes get a lot better. Welker can’t catch a pass if Brady is eating dirt.
Subway, I got you, I was replying to this…
“Shamik, on November 23rd, 2009 at 10:46 am Said:

This team need a wake up call.
We have an old offensive line, and even older D Line. We have one cornerback on the team who can play football, and the most overrated and overpaid safety in the NFL.
We have an over-the-hill running back, who will be 32 next year and asking for a new million dollar contract. Shaun Greene doesn’t look much like the second coming, he can’t even get on the field.
Washington is coming back from a serious injury, we have to sign Braylon and him both to big contracts.
We also need a new OLB, to replace Thomas.
I don’t see where the silver linings are with this team. The Jets are old, beat up and expensive. This team is already over-the-hill and is going nowhere fast. Our GM really screwed up big-time with all these trades and draft picks. Oh yea, we don’t have any more draft picks, so at least we can’t mess that up again.
SD has it right. We need someone to get to the pass rusher on his own. No blitz, no disguise, just one on one beating the offensive lineman. We all know how much Brady hates getting hit, and he he does get hit it throws him off his game, but he was able to pick us apart while getting the ball out just before the hit came. If we have real pass rushers in there then the Jets can afford to not send the house and drop more into coverage. We need a pass rusher to help out and take double teams away from Pace.
Yep, that’s the major issue with this defense – they can’t get pressure without sending extra guys and when they do that, that exposes the LBs and DBs to one on one matchups.
Kyle – Good post and you make several good points. The only nitpicks I would make are that screen passes tend not to work when the defense stacks the box and also moving Brick to RT is an counter-intuitive when his strength is protecting the blindside and his weakness (although he’s much improved this year) is run blocking. Also, he’s paid like a LT. Also, while I would like to see those young players get playing time now too, we should all be careful what we wish for, because (in every sport, in my experience) what often happens in that situation is that the performance worsens even further. Give all those guys extra reps with the starters is what I’d do and increase their playing time if they cope well.
James – Or maybe he just needs to bulk up a bit more and gain another 10 pounds and then he’ll be an effective running back?
If you look back at the personal attacks most of the attacks were against me, I was just retaliating JesuesR and and several other people posted against me for expressing my thoughts about the Jets (especially after the loss to the Phins). When I came on with the name “Jets Suck”, people didn’t like it. I pointed out several examples of us beating sub-par teams and loosing to any decent team and people got made at me. I have been a Jets fan my whole life, a season ticket holder for over10 years (I bet most of your blogger don’t even go to the games). I questioned Dirty Sanchez’s abilities weeks ago when we still had a winning record and everyone thought I was crazy, now half the poeple here want to bench him (he’s just another Ryan Leaf).
I asked that you take a look at my previous posts and the people (or posts I was responding to) and see the truth. It’s not my fault it took several more losses before blogger started to agree with me about our record (who we beat) and our crappy QB
Kyle, were you laughing at your own post? because I was.
Vernon is hurt, can’t play when hurt. Lito, can’t bench him either, he’s hurt too. in fact when healthy, we cant bench him, because we need him to play.
Dbrick is a great passblocker, why move him to RT where he needs to be a better runblocker than he really is? and lets move a solid run-blocker in Faneca, yeah lets find mre ways to screw up an already solid O-line. their only fault is age. And thats only with Woody and Faneca…not with LT or Center.
Shonn Greene will be just fine, he is the least of our problems.
We do need a true Pass-rushing DE. and some youth at DT.
But we have two very good, young MLBers. The best CB in the league. a solid #3 (lowery). A solid young FS. A QB of the future. A TE who is still learning how to look for the ball in the air, but has been better blocking this season, so he’s growing, and finally have a #1,2 and 3 WRs. I see a lot of silver lining. But to be fair, I do see lots of room for improvement.
I think this is a legitimate question about if we should spend another offseason searching for a second CB. There has been a void opposite Revis since we got him 3 years ago and it is just pathetic we keep getting the wrong people. If we can I say we spend our money dumping players who are too much money (Faneca especially) and see if VG will restructure his [contract] because he has to know he isn’t worth what he is making. We have to target a pass rusher and I think signing Julius Peppers would give this defense the pass rusher that Rex had in Baltimore with Suggs..as far as CB, its obvious where our first round pick should be as well as looking at options in FA, some alright players like Dunta Robinson, and other CBs will be available. It’s sad because we’re really only a mature QB and a second CB away from being a 7-3 team..at least
Jesters – okay. I’ll take you off moderation. If someone insults you in future, please do not respond. Cool?
It is fairly obvious what we need going into the future.
A new LG (If Turner isn’t cutting it), RG, LT (Brick will be a better RT.) We need a group of tough country white boys who have pride, and work as a team. I want the nastiest maulers we can find, and I want them to be big. I will scorge the draft, the CFL, and the earth until I find these men.
We need another RB, lets see if we can find a veteran in the off season who can replace Jones when he asks for his money.
We need X-Weapon on defense. I want someone playing the field who is a sideline to sideline defender. He should be between 5′9 and 6′0 tall, and around 200 Lbs. He needs to be physical and mean, and excellent at pressing against receivers on the LOS. This guys job is basically free-range safety/LB. He has to be great in coverage, and a great tackler. He also needs to be extremely fast.
Now, we need a CB opposite Revis to shutdown the number two. We need a new Strong Safety, someone who can see the whole field and who is fast enough to get there.
We need to figure out what to with Calvin Pace. The guy is not a 3-4 linebacker and neither is Bryan Thomas. They are too slow, and couldn’t cover opposing TE’s if you gave them a blanket.
It is time for Ryan to stop backing up his players. Ryan needs to step away from the friendship aspect of his personality if he wants to keep his job.
It is time to really assess this NFL Roster, and compare it to the teams we play twice a year. I am tired of wasting time, we need to find the right players for this team. We need someone who can cover Welker, we need sideline to sideline defenders to stop the Wildcat and we need a pass-rush if we even want to think about disrupting whoever the opposing QB is. Scheme is not working anymore because we don’t have the players to execute it.
no way you move dbrick. he is an elite LT. the OL as a whole, is the strength of the team
same with TJ. he has played great this year. he also deserves another year
will do
Thanks.
And, yeah, Brick is a prototypical left tackle, sorry Kyle.
D’Brick hasn’t improved with run-blocking because we don’t run to the left. Wouldn’t it help our offense if we could effectively run not only to the right, but to the left as well?
Faneca is on pace to allow 8 sacks from the LG position. We could’ve signed some clown off the street if we wanted that kind of production. He is a total liability on passing downs. So what do we do with him? Take him out, and put Turner in so opposing defense know when we are throwing the ball? Bench Faneca now, and put in Robert Turner. The O-Line won’t miss a beat, because Turner is an very good run blocker.
I want to see versatility out of this O-Line and I want to see D-Brick play some RT and get used to it. I want to see him get mean, and start paving roads.
Every great NFL team has a versatile O-Line with depth. We have neither.
Yea, our O-Line is really, really good. But there is no running back in the NFL that can see the field like Thomas Jones besides L.T. And as far as the sacks are concerned, we are average when it comes to protecting our QB. I think our O-Line is overrated at best. I want to see versatility from these guys, and I want to see youth on this line.
Rocky – good post, but watch the language otherwise our spam filter will automatically block it.
I can’t see Vernon restructuring his contract in any way that would benefit the Jets. If he ends up being released without doing much for the Jets he will have cost them $17m total – not terrible when spread over 3 or 4 years. They aren’t going to be able to get him to reduce that amount.
If our O-Line was really that great, Tully Banta Cain wouln’t have four sacks against us in two games this year.
D-Line needs a shake-up too. We can get rid of Jenkins as far as I am concerned. He handicaps the D when he plays, because they all rely on him way too much.
Shaun Ellis plays when he feels like playing, which is most games, but his act is getting old. I am sick of these two sack games, and then nothing for six weeks. That goes for Calvin Pace too. Inconsistent.
Gholston needs to fall of a cliff. That is the only way we can avoid paying him all that money.
i realize this year is shot, and maybe i am not as cynical as the typical fan, but when i look at the current roster, i see more solutions than problems.
again, the OL is the strength of the team. sure faneca and dwood will need to be replaced. in my opinion turner and hunter have already proven they are capable, both are young and should only get better. slauson is another depth guy and the team would be smart to add another possible RT in waiting through the draft
the skill players on offense are all brightspots. TJ/Leon/Greene are a solid trio, and the receivers and TE are all young and in their primes / entering their primes. i am on record for bringing TJ back in 2010. after a somewhat slow start, he has been great and is averaging 4.6 YPC.
the D will be inproved with big Jinx back. Pouha has actually suprised me with his play in the backup role. I think ellis has another year in his tank. depth on the DL should be addressed in the draft. what the D is missing is an elite pass rusher. the D is not that far away in my opion, and should only improve in year 2 of the system
really – the above is all irrelevant. this will be a winning team with an experienced sanchez. right now it is painful, but i feel as though taking our lumps with sanchez now is the best thing for the team in the long run
Kyle, you are out of control bro. Its not as simple as A)brand new Oline B)Big mean 6 foot 200 Lb LB/FS C)shut down corner D) better DE/OLB that Calin PaceE) Ryan stop being freindly….bing bam boom and you got urself a superbowl. Tanny cant just create a MAdden team. how do you go about getting these guys? We thoguht we wer getting that in rhodes, gholston, lito…. but obviously every move is a gamble and its not that simple. Maybe you should be GM so you can scour the earth for ” REALLY BIG MEAN GREAT TACKLING GREAT COVERAGE MONSTERS who by the was ALSO HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY FAST!!” get a clue
Kyle,
Let’s start from the top.
D’Brick is better suited for RT? Really? When he’s more of a finesse guy with 10 ft. long arms? His strength is pass blocking, so you put him on the QB’s blindside. While he has greatly improved his run blocking and is having a very good season, his greatest asset is his ability to pass block.
Brandon Moore is the unsung hero of the O-line. He doesn’t get mentioned much, but he is a mauler (the kind you’re looking for) and has a mean streak. The Jets drafted (hopefully) Faneca’s replacement last draft, a guy named Matt Slauson. He’s a big, mean, physical “country white boy” (not sure why they have to be white, either) and was coached by Bill Callahan in college.
We have our RB of the future, a guy named Shonn Greene.
So you basically want an all-pro free safety. I think everyone does. You just described the best player in the league at that position, Ed Reed. Yeah, we all would want that.
We need a new SS? Leonhard, IMO, has done a very good job and he’s the QB of the defensive backfield. (I won’t argue your point about the 2nd CB, it’s just brutal out there now).
B. Thomas has slowed after starting the season well. But Pace? You want to replace our only real pass rusher? He’s going to get more sacks then he had last season, in 4 less games. He is most certainly NOT the problem, we just need to improve the pass rush around him (and covering TE’s is the job of the ILB’s).
Ryan needs to be who he is. He can’t fake it or change how he coaches mid-season. And if you seriously think our roster is in worse shape than the Bills or Phins, well, I don’t know what to tell you.
Address the CB spot in the draft, and a high pick at that. But what the team really needs is a hard hitting safety that can make plays, pretty much everything Rhodes is not.
Hopefully Strickland can stick around, he can be more than a serviceable nickelback. See what this kid Cole has because God knos what happened to Drew Coleman yesterday. Bye-Bye to Sheppard. I do not see Lowery as a CB in this league, does anyone think he can play Safety?
HAHAHAHA GET RID OF JENKINS?!?! MAYBE KYLE CAN PLAY SOME NOSE FOR US AND GM
“Every great NFL team has a versatile O-Line with depth. We have neither.”
I don’t know about that. Turner has looked like a potential future starter. They’re high on Slauson. Hunter hasn’t been great, but he’s better than Clarke or Clements from a few years ago. They may or may not have depth. Versatility? Faneca has played left tackle, Woody has played all three interior positions, Turner can probably backup all five positions. They aren’t too bad there either.
The pass protection has been an issue. Brick has been good, but other than that, they’ve had problems. Sanchez doesn’t have great pocket presence yet though, as he showed yesterday when he didn’t step up (fumble) and rushed a throw with the backside corner bearing down on him (interception) and on another where he ran into a sack instead of sitting in the pocket. That’s the biggest difference between him and last year’s version of Favre.
We’ve kind of drifted off topic. Cornerbacks? Yeah…I saw Marquice Cole get a look on defense yesterday. He had tight coverage but Brady made a good pass and Cole made the tackle. Maybe he deserves more looks, although with the backups, they tend to give them a limited set of packages to match their skillset.
Still the Ravens defense was great last year with what I consider to be lousy corners (certainly on a par with what we have), which is why I think the pass rush is the more pressing matter.
Kyle,
Banta-Cain didn’t have any sacks in the first meeting against the Pats.
its a shame we dont have draft picks…maybe we should have seen what Clemens could do before giving away our draft for Sanchez.
Kyle – in addition to Brendan’s comment, both TBC sacks yesterday could have been avoided if the QB showed better pocket presence, in my opinion.
Brian – “in my opinion turner and hunter have already proven they are capable, both are young and should only get better”
I agree (although I’m higher on Turner), but did you know that Hunter will be 29 when next season kicks off?
Kyle (again) – I know you’re joking about Gholston falling off a cliff (well, I hope you are!) but since that’s all guaranteed money, I don’t think even that would help the Jets from a salary cap standpoint.
“again, the OL is the strength of the team. sure faneca and dwood will need to be replaced. in my opinion turner and hunter have already proven they are capable, both are young and should only get better. slauson is another depth guy and the team would be smart to add another possible RT in waiting through the draft.”
Very optimistic take on our O-Line. Hunter isn’t that good, Slauson is a total project. Robert Turner could make a really good OG. We still need to waste draft picks on the O-Line this year, and we don’t have many to begin with.
“the skill players on offense are all brightspots. TJ/Leon/Greene are a solid trio, and the receivers and TE are all young and in their primes / entering their primes. i am on record for bringing TJ back in 2010. after a somewhat slow start, he has been great and is averaging 4.6 YPC.”
Thomas Jones will most likely not be on this team next year. He wants money and he wants to win. He is 32 come next year, and I don’t see Mr. T resigning the guy (If T is even still our GM.) Leon is coming back from a very serious injury, and will most likely need a few games under his belt before he is back to full game speed (ff he can even get back there.) Shaun Greene has shown flashes, that’s it. I am not convinced that this guy will be an every down back, he has proven to be very injury prone, and he fumbled in a big spot back in that Miami game.
“the D will be inproved with big Jinx back.”
Really? I think our D-Line looks more athletic and a lot faster with Jenx out of the mix. I think if we had younger, faster DT’s and OLB’s our own line would be better without that big cog in the middle.
“Pouha has actually suprised me with his play in the backup role. I think ellis has another year in his tank. depth on the DL should be addressed in the draft. what the D is missing is an elite pass rusher. the D is not that far away in my opion, and should only improve in year 2 of the system”
Ellis takes games off, which really upsets me as a fan. Pace too. They are good players, but too inconsistent to be considered great.
“really – the above is all irrelevant. this will be a winning team with an experienced sanchez. right now it is painful, but i feel as though taking our lumps with sanchez now is the best thing for the team in the long run”
“Experienced Sanchez” may be another two another three years away. He is supposed to be a senior right now, and he only started 16 games in college.
Yea, that was Mike Wright with two sack in the first game. Another no-name player.
freddys dead,
The Sanchez trade didn’t include any picks from the 2010 draft.
Kyle,
Pace takes games off? Aside from the MNF Phins game, which was his first one back from suspension, he has been a force in all the games.
How do you go about getting these guys?
They are available in every draft, and if you have a great scout team, you get the players you need and the ones that excel at the next level.
But first, you need to assess your team and figure out what you need. What you need is nasty maulers on the O-Line and D-Line, a LB/FS with great speed and the ability to press opposing WR’s at the LOS. We need sideline to sideline defenders. And this is if we want to compete inside our own division (which we haven’t.)
Yes, two tackles against the Pats. I’m sure they really fear Pace.
Sackdance hit it on the head. The real problem here isn’t the secondary, it’s the lack of a consistent pass rush. Only 18 sacks so far this year, with this aggressive defense, isn’t acceptable. Plus, we’re not getting enough pressure to force game-changing turnovers – we’re one of only 6 teams that haven’t scored a defensive TD yet. Rex’s defense in BAL scored 6 last year.
As far as the secondary, yeah, we always have a crazy hard time covering Welker / Edelman, and we need to gameplan better against NE. But that’s 2 games out of 16 every year. Overall, we’re middle-of-the-pack in covering 2nd and 3rd receivers. Our secondary will look better once our front seven generates the pressure they’re supposed to. I wouldn’t mind drafting 1 or 2 young CB’s in the middle rounds next year (NE and IND have followed this template for years), but I don’t think it’s our #1 priority.
Revis did a great job covering Moss but Welker kicked our ass!
Kyle,
This team’s needs are simple:
We need a pass rusher. Badly.
We need a competent CB opposite Revis.
We need a young, big NT to eventually replace Jenkins.
We may have our future O-lineman on the roster already, or we may not. If they feel they have their guys, then we don’t need to draft any. If not, go out and get a big RT to plow (Hopefully between Turner & Slauson we have our future LG already).
We have a lot of younger D-lineman (Devito, Pouha, Pituitoa) who are the future at the DE spots. They’ve all shown promise and have impressed me since getting more playing time post-Jinx’s injury.
FS is not going to happen, as Rhodes is on this team for better or for worse. Just hope he improves with more time in the system and deal with it.
Kyle,
Getting neutralized and taking games off are two entirely different things. You can say he didn’t have a good game, but you can’t say he took the game off. That guy is a competitor.
i know i kinda missed the bus on the last post regarding Sanchez since it got so crowded so qiuckly but ill just say this……i know our playcalling kinda sucks but i think the main problem with our offense is Sanchez’s inability to make 2nd and 3rd reads.
You cant knock the OC for drawing up a play to work, this the NFL people, it dosnt mean its gonna work….i mean the team on the other side did prep and watch game tape you know…Sanchez has to know that when the play drawn up doesnt go according to plan to read the rest of the field, not force the ball and get nervous. Whats really frustrating me is with all this “learning” crap that Rex is preacing in his support, i havent seen any improvements whatsoever! I think that further explains why it seems that he’s miss firing to the recievers in certain windows and the “drops”…..their clearly not expecting the ball.
I guess that shows the difference with Favre last year and this year in which no matter what play is drawn up, EVERYONE should expect the ball, thats what makes the Saints, Colts, Patriots, and Vikings offenses so dynamic etc. And its a shame but i think we have better offensive weapons than ALL those teams but the kid doesnt now how touse them, which is why from DAY 1 I have lobbied for Clemens to start regardless of how long you guys think he’ll be here.
Fact is with his history in this system he gave us the better chance to win this year……i mean we did have more pro bowlers than anyone else last season, so to think that Clemens couldnt produce with this team after the garbage he had to put up with from that 07 squad is ridiculous regardless of what u guys wanna say about training camp…….its friggin TRAINING CAMP!
So we let Clemens go, and Sanchez wows all you guys in training camp next year and yucks it up when it really matters….then what?..draft another qb?…u cant be serious.
I honestly dont think in us drafting sanchez was a knock on Clemens but more of a coach putting his stamp on a team, new reime, new coach, new QB….HIS QB. which i dont blame him for that….but this is starting to become a stubborn endorsemnt of the kid so the oaching staff doesnt look stupid for starting him in the first place.
Riddle me this..if everyone is saying that the Flacco and Ryan experiments were very rare and you cant expect rookies to to do what they did, why in the hell does YOUR COACH think so. alot of you werent saying this after the first 3 games, you were just drunk with kool aid. But know it “what did you expect, he’s a rookie”??….Some people who dont know any better will fall for the crap but there are some of us who know better.
I honestly wasnt expecting Sanchez to do what those guys did, I didnt even want to draft the kid given his experience in college because he would need a few years to develope…ON THE BENCH! But now because of the two phenoms last year, everyone including your COACH has adopted this “throw em into the fire and see if he cooks” mentality but all of a sudden were not expecting the same results?….well the from past experiences with tons of other rookie QB’s…..the OTHER result has been BUST…..point being, benching a qb and letting him analyze the game from a more stable environment hasnt EVER and i mean EVER hurt a qb’s progression…period.
I hear alot of you saying “benching him wont do anything, he cant learn that way”…are you serious? Are you sure saying that because that was your philosophy from before the year started or because your just reapeating whatever Rex says in press confrences?
Well, news flash people….dont believe everything you hear and see on TV…press confrences are stages to say the politically correct thing….never the truth. this is the same guy who was giving ringing endorsements of Ratliff and Clemens during camp, compared Kerry to Reed, and said we are a SB contender(which i believed). Men lie, women lie…numbers dont….
You can officially say that Rex’s career rests in Sanchez’s hands, because as this kid sinks..so does Rex, not because he’s a bad coach but because of his stubborness regarding the kid.
The Jets had no game plan for Welker. He should have been jammed at the line and then double teamed. In addition, they should have been overly physical with him. At some point, NE would have stopped going to him, because they would be worried about his health. Instead, he was wide open, all game.
Isn’t it strange, how the defense has played poorly in the first half of the last two games and then, after halftime, they come out and shut down the opposition. Either, they are making half time adjustments or they do not come out ready to play. That is not good.
I agree with Brendan about team needs, although big NTs are so scarce that unless one falls into our lap (and I note that the more games we lose, the more realistic the possibility becomes), I’d be happy to just get more “normal DT” depth (ie 300 pounders rather than 400 pounders), as the defense has shown it doesn’t necessarily need to have a Jenkins in there to operate well (in spurts at least).
I’m pretty happy with what Pouha, Pitoitua and DeVito have shown on the line since Kris went down. I wouldn’t start those three guys, but all of them are reasonably priced NFL contributors, which with all the high priced players the Jets have, is exactly what they need to uncover as much of as possible.
TJ is signed through 2010. if it ends up being an uncapped year, the team should pay him. i am not saying extend him, but in my opinion he has earned his 2010 payday based on his performance this year. he will be 32, but remember his first 4 years in the league were as a backup
also kyle, if you really think the D is better without jenkins…i am not sure what to say. you are wrong.
Team in unprepared week in and week out.
Sorry for the long post BTW, but i just reached a breaking point where i couldnt hold it in, im not bashing anyone for being optimistic, but i know there are two types of fans….football fans who support whatever team they have grown accustomed to and then there are fans who give moral support to their home town team regardless of what goes on behind the scene because it probably doesnt matter to them just as long as they root for whatever team that reprsents their home. and this goes for all sports. So pardon me and many others for being football junkies and over analyzing but its hard not to call things how you see it.
Wasn’t it smart using Lowery as a kickoff return man??? Dumb! Dumb! and Dumber! And that is what I said when they decided to bench Miller after one game. Now there starting CB is out with an ankle sprain.
This coaching staff is just plain dumb! Starting with Little Schott who should be canned immediately,
And where are those Brett Favre detractors now???? With Favre the JETS would be 8-2 instead of 4-6. Woody tried to save money and now it is going to cost him money with 20,000 unsold tickets in his new domeless stadium!
I am hoping in late here–
This is the beauty of the NE offense- if you put a third corner in for welker, they run. If you cover him with a LB, they pass. To truly dominate them, you put a safety on him, or a safety on the other outside reciever and a corner on him (remember Eric Smith being the ‘nickel’ on Edelman last time), so you have a little more beef for stopping the run–
And it all comes back to the safeties.
Regarding the team coming out flat– the players here were all acquired during Mangini’s regime, ’smart and tough’ players. None of them seem nasty, or have that edge that the old Baltimore D had. Once we get some churn, and some more of Ryan type players in here, maybe we will see some more fire?
More “Ryan Type” players? Wasn’t that supposed to be what Scott and Leonhard were? I think Scott typifies where the Jets are right now – talked a good game, came out of the gates swinging, but hasn’t made a real impact as of late.
Revis is too good for the Jets!
Just a casual observation– he had a defense that was nasty in Baltimore. Our defense doesn’t talk much– Scott and Rhodes talk. Our defense is not nasty, outside of David Harris no one plays ‘violently’, especially in the secondary. Its not why they are losing, but someone talked about them not coming in fired up for the first half.
Ed(itor)-
I thought you gave up being a fan?
I’m sorry, but can you honestly say that in February of 2009, you wanted Brett Favre to return to the Jets? I’m not knocking Brett, the guy is obviously effective, when healthy, but nobody, and I mean nobody knew what he would bring to the 2009 season back in Feb of 2009.
And someone said something about our talent vs other top teams. The Vikings are heads and shoulders above our offensive talent, thats a fact. Sidney Rice is a legit WR in this league. Percy Harvin has become a a very dangerous WR-KR threat. Besides having a moxie and veteran QB they also have the best RB in the NFL.
We need to be stronger at our core. What I mean is up the middle on both sides of the ball. You look at how the Ravens did it on the D side of the bal. Ngata, Lewis, Scott and Reed, Leonard. We have 60% of that formula. Jenks gets us to 80%, but Rhodes is a big ?? Getting these pieces in place allows the outer pieces of the D to be interchangeable. Having a corner like Revis is a huge plus because you can now theoretically shut down his side and the middle. Defense having some issues but much closer than offense. If you look at what the Pats did when they were winning Superbowls they were solid on the O-line, QB and TE. the major skill positions were interchangeable. Again we have a good base, but Faneca, Woody, Sanchez are not up to snuff. We need to strengthen both sides of the team up the middle and we can be a very good team….but not this year
Welker is tough for any team’s D to cover. He gives all teh DCs fits.
Q2. No do not draft a CB in round one because pass rush is more important and will improve the CB play.
I have never been a Lowery fan but he was growing on me this year, he had beaten out Shephard I thought. I was hoping he would be an adequate number two.
Unfortunately they used him returning kicks for some reason (Is Miller REALLY that out of shape or slow, if not why are they talking him up at CB?), and he sustained what Cimini is calling a Major Injury. Hopefully not that serious.
Strickland had flashed in the slot, but he too got hurt during the game, hopefully not seriously.
I guess Justin Miller will get a shot beginning this week and maybe Cole can do the job.
No matter what they can not play Shephard enough to effect the compensation, thats for sure.
What will improve this secondary the most is a legit pass rusher, so I am leaning toward going that route in the draft, or signing one if possible but they are expensive.
In the remaining games they need to find out if there is a diamond in the rough already on the roster, have seen enough of Thomas and Douglass, need to give serious reps to Westerman, Murrell etc.
Oh yeah, and Gholston too.
Clowney looked real explosive when he returned that kick.
Great need: NT, CB and MLB (with great rushing ability). However, here is the real problem. No matter what players you have the coaching staff needs to put them in the best schemes (plays) suited to their talents. Rex and his staff have never done that. Like Mangina they have tried to place players in an already existing system and it is not working (square pegs in round holes). Case in point, now Rex is talking about how “maybe” they have to “revise” what Schotty give to Sanchez! They should have done that in pre-season for goodness sake. In my opinion, Rex needs to stop his emotional appeals to his players and serve notice by kicking some of the players butts. The season is over so start benching players who do not perform. Start to clean-house…..Go Jets.
man i hope this off season is uncapped…. Draft Cody for NT, sign Carlos Rodgers at Corner and Atogwe at Saftey, Later round Draft picks on OLine and Dline.
Bassett,
It is quite simply really. Let Smith and Rhodes split duties with Leonhard. Rhodes cannot establish himself other than on the practice field. He is a bonehead. Lowery will continue to develop however the guidance is missing so his transition will be the most difficult of the corners. Lito can be kept but he will be replaced by Lowery or another cornerback. I never thought Revis would be so open with his words. I expected him to say nothing and keep his mouth shut until the rest of the season. The cornerbacks need help from the pass rush so drafting a defensive lineman will help.
