Audible: So What Now?
We all agree, that like every season, there’s some good times. It’s just how many of the other ones there are that color many of our outlooks on life for much of September through December.
With the Jets sitting with a 4-6 record heading into Week 12, listed at 11th in Conference with six regular season games remaining for the season, what are you looking for from this team from here on out?
Is it time for some of the depth players to see more time on the field? What’s next with a month and a half to go?

Let Gholston, Westerman, Sanchez, Eric Smith and Shonne Greene play alot of minutes and try to see some progress. We want to lose now, we need a pick anywhere from 5 to 12 at this point. We can then draft the best DL, or Corner on the board.
Simple: Sanchez needs to cut down on turnovers and the defense needs to grow a pair. If those two things happen, I’ll be optimistic going into the offseason.
Beating indy would be the best ever.
Nothing makes me smile more than beating Peyton, Dolphins, or Pats.
I will damn Peyton for staying his senior year at Tennessee.
I would like to see Shonne Green and Jones split the carries, I would like to see Sanchez develop his play action better. I would like to see him work on different routes and throw the ball earlier and develop some pocket precence. His happy feet should be used as a weapon when necessary. What I really want is sound football. No more stupid plays. Lets get the slants working again. Lets get vernon Gholston out there alot more and lets put kerry rhodes on the bench.
More Gholston.
Less Rhodes.
More Westerman.
Less BThomas.
How about we see them win some games. That would show me that they’re improving. Sanchez is gonna play. Greene is getting integrated more this season little by little and I think they’re trying to preserve him some since this is a lost season. Gholston, whatever, play him, don’t play him, we’ll see ya next year Vernon. Give Turner of Slauson some snaps on the line late in games, see what they can do.
That’s a great picture of the $28 million hat dance.
One great game from Sanchez. A 300 yard, 3 TD, 0 INT complete stud game. There’s no gimme left on the schedule, so uncorking a great game against any of these teams would start to alleviate my worries that Sanchez might not have what it takes between his ears to be an NFL QB. And, while I would like Sanchez to win a duel with Peyton, a win against his friend and mentor, Carson Palmer, in December at home would be great, too. And, taking down Matty Ice wouldn’t be bad, either.
oh….and PLAYOFFS!!!!!
I’m sorry for those that think its smart to tank games for a better draft pick
But that is just rediculous
F the draft right now
“YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME”
I would like to see a different scheme in offensive play calling. Tell Sanchez not to worry anymore and just play.
I’d like to see play designs that allow receivers to get open, I’d like to see Cavanaugh and Schottenheimer work on simplifying Sanchez’ reads. I’d like to see increased integration of short passing game, screens and quick slants. Let Sanchez get some confidence back with low risk short completions and pick apart defenses.
On defense I’d like to see some of the younger guys get some plays in. Pitoitua, Westerman, Cole and Cummings should be given the chance to contribute and provide the starters with some rest.
@ Mike D…
Agree with you 100%!
Gholston… let’s get this guy some real time out there and see if he can do anything… if not, well… hello to the new Blair Thomas!
Rhodes… as far as I’m concerned, he’s the new Aaron Glenn… 1 good season and he thinks he’s a damn all-star; yet produces nothing after that except a lot of hot air. If this guy’s bite was as big as his bark, he’d be included in conversations about Ed Reed and Bob Sanders
Um, I hate to break it to everyone who thinks we haven’t seen Gholston, but he started and played the majority of the first four games.
I’d simply like to see some steady improvement across the board, from every phase. It’s most glaring with dirty sanchez, but the dropped passes, missed tackles, blown coverages, missed blocks, I’d like to see all those things addressed and while I don’t expect all of it to be fixed, I want to see them at least going in the right direction.
What worries me most about sanchez is his accuracy. I thought that was his strongpoint, or one of them, but he often simply misses the target and some of those become INTs. As much as I hate the throwing into triple (quadruple?) coverage INTs, I expected those from a rook with so little college experience. But those bad misses every game have to go.
Scott, you just mentioned players that only have one good season and then suggested Bob Sanders as the alternative?
Sharper and Polamalu are probably safer bets.
FWIW, I think Sanchez has great pocket presence: he takes command of the huddle, gets the team out there crisply and, for a rookie, rarely gets confused pre-snap. I think his pocket awareness is lacking a bit. He has to understand that he doesn’t have that much time in the pocket and he needs to have that uncanny sense (like Brady or Big Ben) for when to step up to avoid a sack. I think that he will get that with more experience (I hope). As for holding on to the ball too much, that’s defensive recognition skills, soemething that, again, I hope he improves with experience. I’m willing to give him a rookie pass on pocket awareness and defensive recognition…the NFL ain’t college. My issue is flat out dumb mistakes and ball security. 16 INTs and 9 fumbles in 10 games…2.5 miscues per game…that’s a killer. Sanchez doesn’t get sacked that much, but I’d prefer a sack to an INT any day.
Here’s what I’d like to see: a simplified game plan, with precise execution. Enough gimmicks with triple receivers and wildcats. Run some sweeps instead of down the gullet all the time. Have receivers wide and one in the middle of the field instead of bunching them together hand making sanchez throw into quadruple coverage. The offense knows whats coming, if they run their routes right and sanchez makes the right read (easier to do in a simpler scheme) you can’t stop it. And I want to see 4 more interceptions…by Delhomme!
I’d also like to see shotty eliminate the play calls that aren’t just bad, but embarrassing. That direct snap to Smith was a joke – everyone saw it coming (as in there was a long count that gave the D plenty of time to adjust) and the O looked VERY tentative running it. If they ain’t good at it, don’t do it. Maybe it looked good in practice, but that was the wrong time of the game to call it.
@ EastSide
Good point… Reed, Sharper and Polamalu!
I would like to see Rex byotch slap Schotty after a 3 and out. That would be a nice xmas present just like his pop did with Gilbride.
That would be like awesome.
@SackDance
I agree. It’s worth pointing out though that we are seeing some accuracy issues. To some degree they can be attributed to experience with the receivers, but Sanchez is still showing some sloppy passes when attempting short passes to receivers within 5-10 yards of the sidelines.
Let’s hope most of the ball security problems can be attributed to experience.
Scott,
Aaron Glenn was good for more than 1 year, and so has Rhodes.
Bob Sanders hasnt played a game in god knows how long, so i’d take Rhodes over Sanders any day.
I would just like to see them win some games. It doesn’t matter how. I f they can win some games, we know they’re improving and we won’t want to die every Monday.
I would never EVER want my team to tank the last few games for a draft pick! We know the season is over, but as a fan, you just get to a point where you want to see your team win!
It’s a great question. This blog asked, before the Jacksonville game, if Ryan was “going to the well” too often, in asking for the crowd to be that 12th man. The crowd responded, the team lost.
Ryan then went as far as shedding tears in an emotional rousing of the team, one that, by all accounts, had the team fired up. That didn’t work either.
The hot streak by both Sanchez and the D was spent by game 4. All of the exotic blitz packages were shown, Sanchez’ tendencies were showing quickly. Injuries don’t help, but everyone has to deal with them. Where was the depth?
So, yeah, now what? What’s the in season adjustment(s)?
I still don’t see how anyone can say that the team is improving. I certainly have not seen anything to warrant that. Maybe Revis is improving. Everyone else on Defense has been abysmal. Yes, they play hard, but they are sloppy and tackle poorly. Sanchez has been bad, yes, but the receivers have also dropped their share of balls and have not run their routes all that well either. O-line has been pretty damn good though, as has Thomas Jones. The sum total however, has gone in only one direction, down.
Try to see if Gholston can at least take up space on the DL. If he can occupy a blocker or two that will be his role next year. he clearly cannot play OLB, its DE or nothing for him.
I love TJ and he has been a warrior this year but I think its time to get S Greene alot more involved in the running game. TJ is probably gone after this year and with the Leon injury S Greene might have to carry the load next year until Leon is healthy if he gets back to 100%.
In my opinion the Gholston project is finished. He is what he is. A below avergae player with zero skills to get to the QB at this level. I want to see young guys play but not get embarrssed. Unless VG figured out how to be a NFL player on the bench the last 2 weeks……whats to see?
As to Rhodes I am not sure what has happened especially the last 3 weeks when he has stated that he needs to start making big plays. I would say he is “trying” to hard to make things happen but he just looked awful since the 2nd Miami game.
He is not a candidate to get cut (salary and talent alone) but he should get a message sent this week and not start against the Panthers. His play recently is something even I cant defend.
To second Jesus….Bob Sanders has been a non factor in the NFL the last 2 years due to injury. He just cant stay on the field
agree with seeing more of gholston playing with his hand down. i think the only way he stays on the roster post 2010 is if he gains 15-20 lbs and plays DE
i would like to see a well called game by schotty. stop the gadget plays. stop the risky throws outside the numbers into a crowd of defenders.
i would like to see the receivers and TE step up and make plays for sanchez. his completion percentage is well documented. but remember he has had key drops in many of the games by edwards and keller. those 2 need to show up consistently. J-Co, i am less worried about
on D – i would like to see the young guys out there. especially smith, ihedibo and cole. there really is no need for jimmy leonhard to be out there with 3 screws in his hands
Kirk,
I’ve commented before on Sanchez’s accuracy issues, too. He’s not completing enough passes to help the team. At 52.2%, he’s just hurting the team too much…that’s over 2 incompletions a week just to get to the 60% benchmark. Unfortunately, I really don’t know why he’s this inaccurate. He flat out misses way too many passes, especially to the left. I’m wondering if Schotty is just calling too many passes to the WRs for our rookie QB? Jones only has 6 receptions…that’s just hard to believe. Or, does Sanchez have a mechanical flaw when throwing to his left? I’ve noticed that he doesn’t loft many passes over the DB and to his receiver’s outside shoulder when going left. I just don’t know what it is because he was very accurate in college and he was very accurate in high school (as a high school junior he completed 76.3% of his passes and 61.6% as a senior; at USC he was at 64.27%). I know the level of competition is a big step up, but Sanchez just misses passes that I’m sure he’s hit 100s of times. His inaccuracy (besides the normal rookie issues) is far worse than I expected. I thought, at worst, he’d be at 56-57%. I wonder what the TJB crew thinks about what’s causing his inaccuracy…it’s a mystery to me.
I like Rex but, he is making a big mistake, by putting all of his faith in Schottenheimer and Sanchez. Rex may know defense but, he obviously has no eye for good offense. If Rex was studying the game film, he would see incompetent play-calling and a QB who makes mistake after mistake and is throwing away our season. There is no reason that Rex has to put up with it. I say, do something about it, before it’s too late and he loses his coaching job.
I would like to see them give Ainge a shot at QB. If it turned out that Ainge was the real deal, what could be bad. Who would care if Sanchez never develops , if Ainge turns out to be a star. Ainge has size and a rifle of an arm. He looked just fine in pre-season. Just because a player was a high draft pick does not mean that you ignore the other talent on your team. When was Tom Brady drafted? What happens, if he never gets a shot?
i think is to early to throw the towel until we loose 8 games we are still in it the afc is open kc beat pitt oak beat cin look at tenn. they are 4/6 and i bet you they are thinking they have a chance why is new york fans and media give up so much no wonder we dont win before we are elemanated we are giving up players are humen they read these blogs so thet say **** it i got my money i just play out the year believe in miracles we have had some happen in ny sports 86 mets game 6 2000 jets /fins they goes tirany you cant save the season.wow no wonder nobody wants to play here I will keep the hope on my side may a few jet fans could make a difference JETS MOVE TO VA.WE WILL LOVE YOU DOWN HERE EX NEW YORKER
Harvlis:
And how is Woodypecker and his suck-up going to sell their PSL’s to the spanish market?
aka drew – i agree gholston has shown nothing so far. had he been a lifelong football player, 4 year starter in college i would say we’ve probabaly seen enough. but i will go back to the fact that he came out early, was known to be a project, is still just 23, didnt start playing football until his soph year in highschool, and was asked to change positions.
he has the body and physical skills that cannot be taught. he will be around for 2010 regardless. lets see what the coaching staff can do with him
I know it is not going to happen but I would like to bench Sandhead and give one of the other tree QB’s on the roster a chance. If they do not want to give them a chance than why the hell are we holding on to four QB on our roster?
The more Sandhead plays the more he sucks, so why not have him learn on the bench for a game or two and see what the others have to offer. This season is over anyway and Clemens contract is going to be up after this year (Restricted free ajent) so why not try to howcase him in a couple of games and see if anyone is willing to trade for him. If nothing else we can see for ourselves if he is worth keeping on the roster.
This team has been pretty much up there with anyone talent-wise all decade. However, they’ve squandered away all these years with poor quarterbacking. Why should this year, or next year (sophomore slump anyone) be any different?
Why no love for Aaron Glenn? He was pretty much a top CB for a decade and made the Pro Bowl 3 times and probably should have made it a couple of more times, especially early in his career. Glenn was a stud and, IMO, the Jets best CB until Revis. Even with Revis, he was the Jets’ most dangerous CB…any INT could go to the house. He was a stud and a cornerstone of the Jets resurgence under Parcells.
Improvement by the two struggling rookies, QB Sanchez and head coach Ryan. The biggest issue with both is consistency. They have had their moments this year, and within some games, but have also been abysmal at other times. And unfortunately both seem to be getting worse as the season goes on, not better. They are just rookies so there is room for improvement, but both need to turn things around and in the right direction before the season is over. If they don’t, neither should get too much rope next year.
Id like to see a pulse…
Its sad that the freaken Texans look way more physical than us on defense. So much for a good defensive base… we need to bring Rex players… this Mangini mess is worse than I thought. Its like Obama walking into the Bush mess. You can’t just pull the troops now to cover up the mistake… I guess we have to play through…
I think Rex should tweet with the fans to get some tips on how to best move forward.
Benching Sanchez makes no sense. When guys like Young or Leinart were benched, they got to see a veteran QB run the offense. What’s Sanchez going to see? Clemens? He’ll get even cockier watching Clemens because he’s already a better QB. Watching Erik Ainge? Sanchez has so much more skill than Ainge it isn’t even funny. I’m all for a punitive benching for a series or quarter if he does something like audible out of a play and throw an INT or toss another dumb INT like the 4th one against the Pats. But, announce that he’s benched and Clemens/Ainge will be starting against the Panthers? No way.
Why is O’Connell not even in the conversation?
Ainge is at least a 4-year starter from an SEC school. Why not try him out? Certainly can’t hurt.
Bent,
I always thought the Jets got O’Connell just to pick his brains before the first Pats game. I see him as next year’s no. 3 QB, behind either Ainge or, preferably, a veteran back up. But, I’ll add him into my comment. Why start O’Connell, who didn’t even go through Jets training camp and has less experience than Sanchez, over him? Doesn’t make any sense to me.
SD99
Was a huge A Glenn fan. Still remember the missed FG by the Colts that he ran back for a TD. I still think we lost that game but I was a huge A Glenn. Was not given a lot of respect by the league as we werent very good during his prime years.
O’Connell will have a shot at being the back up next year. I still think this team should have a Vet on the roster at the QB position. Anyone not named Pennington will be a nice start. Sanchez has noone to go to to talk about what just happened on the field. I know we have M Cav as a QB coach but I think we need a vet
Shamik,
It can’t hurt? If he sucks, then the Jets take a loss and Rex is second-guessed for not starting Sanchez. If he gets a win, then Rex has started a full-blown QB controversy. Throwing the franchise into turmoil probably isn’t a smart move at this point. Remember, way back during the first 3 weeks, Sanchez (at 22 years old) became the first rookie in NFL history to win his first 3 games to start the season. We all know the kid has talent, benching him now when playoffs are a pipe dream makes no sense. And, btw, coaches like Shanahan and Coughlin both benched vets when their teams had a shot for the playoffs to get their rookies playing time. Shanahan by starting Cutler probably cost Denver a playoff spot. Teams sacrifice seasons in order to get their rookie QB’s NFL playing time. So, we may not like it, but it happens all the time.
Sit:
Rhodes. He’s a veteran playing like a rookie. He needs time to check his head, priorities and re-dedicate himself to his craft: tackling (with arms) and intercepting (with hands).
Start:
Sanchez. He’s a rookie trying to play like a veteran. He needs learn to play within himself and the team. The best thing Jets can do for him is to stop the run and start the run.
Which has me thinking?
1) Any 350 Lbs Nose Guards in this year’s draft?
2) Sign Leon.
3) Are we gonna sign Jones again?
4) How ’bout getting Shonn Green some touches?
Gholston’s injury is imaginary. We’re playing for next year, so let’s get the kid some playing time. He’s a potential starter or at least depth or worse a big, zero percent body fat flop.
Clowney’s a Jacka$$, but he’s fast. Get him some regular season playing time as deep threat as well as some creative plays to get him in open space; but, shut his mouth and twitter account!
A tight end like Dustin Keller should be a rookie QB’s second best friend behind the running game. Hopefully, they will continue to develop a report and Sanchez can rely on him as the safety valve.
Let’s Westerman and Eric Smith more playing time… even after Jim Leonard gets back.
Also, how’s OG Slauson’s development coming along? That’s probably a long term project, but ya never know I saw our 2008 Pick, OT Nate Garner playing against us.
Promote Wallace Wright. / Demote Brad Smith.
Hopefully, Justin Miller can kick return back to form.
Draft Needs:
Safety, Corner, Pass Rush, Nose Guard and Offensive Guard.
Speaking of D Keller. I know its not all his fault but he has not played well this year and has dropped alot of (tough) but game-changing catchable balls this year. plus it always seems that when he runs a crossing route he is never ready to cacth the ball?Maybe its just me but I would have thought short routes up the middle would have been open for him all game.
Sack – yeah, I’m not necessarily advocating o’connell but he often gets forgotten even though (a) he was a higher pick and (b) he’s currently ahead of Ainge on the depth chart.
Dean – the only 350 pound NG worth considering is Cody who’s probably a top ten pick. However, I strongly feel that the Jets shouldn’t gear their defense to rely on such a player because they are so scarce, it’s a hard position to have more than one or two guys in. The defense can work with “normal” DTs…let’s get some decent ones of those. (We may already have some on the roster).
Dean
As Bent mentioned T Cody is a top 10 pick due to the 3-4 transition in the NFL and he is a beast at 6′5 360. Alabama has not alllowed a 90+ yard rusher since he arrived. The kid is an animal but unless we self destruct we wont get him
The other top guy is Ndamukong Su from Nebraska. He dosent fit our DT as he is 6′3 300 and he is rated higher than Cody so he will got to a 4-3 team….early
Finding a top 3-4 DT early in the draft is almost impossible. These guys usually are found much later in the draft as projects….. as 6′5 360 athletes are rare
The fans on this board are too deep into the woods to see the f@ckin trees. It is crystal clear by now that Sanchez was not ready to play in the pros. Period. Pete Carrol was 100% correct, no doubt about it.
Drew- I was thinking the same thing about Keller. i think the most logical and best explanation for that is him and Sanchez dont have the game timing yet. I do think it will get better the more they play together in game situatons
Hey I want a good draft pick as much as anyone but no way we sacrifice doing what gives us the best chance to win for the drafts sake. The only thing I want is for this team to get some credibility back and finish with a respectable record.
This will show that we are headed in the right direction and quiet some of the people who think Rex is just a booger eating moron who cant be a great HC.
The man has some stuff to learn but he is a natural leader and football runs through his veins. The guy also wants to turn this thing around and win so bad it brings him to tears
Inagodadivida??
Have you seen USC this year? I think Pete Carroll had more than just Sanchez’s skills in mind when he made his statements.
Plus the kid played 16 games at USC. He wasnt supposed to start but if he beats out the guy we have on the roster what are they supposed to do? Sit him? The Lions did the same thing with Stafford. He beat out Culpepper and he has played well in some games and looked lost in others. Its called starting a rookie QB. The sooner fans understand it the better
I just want qame where Sanchez looks like a 1st rd pick. Stafford has had 2 awesome games so far (but got injured in both!)
AKA…DREW:
Question: Has Franchez pulled out a win this year?
I know he has given up some, but has he pulled one out?
SackDance, why should there be a controversy. Sanchez has played horribly, he has lost games for the team. If Ainge or Clemens performs better, then in my book they deserve to start. Sanchez can sit back, practice, study, and learn. Then in the summer he can compete for the starting job. At least it’ll motivate the kid. Sending him out there no matter what his performance means that he can do whatever he wants without consequences. Besides, Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, all sat on the bench their first year. That was even the plan for Roethlisburger until the two Qbs ahead of him got hurt. There is a precedence.
I know it sounds CRAZY, but… they are only 2 games out of a playoff spot—all three 6-4 teams are underdogs this week. As awful as the past 6 weeks have been, it would still be great to make the play-offs. Nothing has been shown recently to suggest that it is a reasonable proposition, but fans do not think rationally. There is a remote chance, and I think that should still be the primary goal…until it is no longer a possibility.
dmsarad
Ill give you two games where he looked like a 1st rd pick
-His first game in Houston he was awesome, he made one bad throw, but other than that led the offense up and down the field.
-He was good in the second half vs the Pats, but the first half had nothing to do with him bc the Jets barely had the ball and when they did they primarily ran it
-He was good in the Tenn game, the lone pick wasnt his fault, Stuckey dropped a VERY catchable ball right to the defender
-He was good in the Miami debacle in Miami. He left that game ahead and led TD drives the whole 4th quarter
Stafford has had two good games but I have Direct TV and he has looked just as bad, if not worse, as Sanchez at times. Stafford has also played LESS than Sanchez and has nearly the same number of INTS. And Stafford has a an ABSOLUTE BEAST target in Calvin Johnson, so I dont want to hear he has no one to throw to.
Keep in mind that the Jets went 9-7 last year and faced a much tougher schedule this year with Rex than the easy one Mangini had last year coming off 4-12.
Sanchez has been god awful and brilliant this season. Its no where near as bad some of the Jet fans make it out to be. At 3-0 he was the Sanchize. That should tell you that he was at least good enough for the NY media to go nuts and give him a nickname like that.
Best thing they could do for this kid is get him the hell away from Brian Schottenhiemer. He made Chad and Brett both look like they were washed up, Chad won Comeback POY and Favre is having the best statistical season of his life in Minn
Hank
Yes he came from behind in the Tenn game and threw the game winning TD pass to J Co…
Oh thats right you werent paying attention because there was nothing to kill the kid about that day
Since we are outta playoff contention, Let Sanchez play some football. Let the kid throw, like mentioned earlier, I wanna see a 250-300 yard game, with 3 td’s and 0-1 Int’s.
That’ll show me that the kid can play football with the best of’em. And knocking off Matt Ryan or Carson Palmer would bring me a smile on this once good, but now mediocre season.
Hank?
He played his ass off in the 2nd half of the 1st Miami game and gave our Defense the lead that they gave up
He also came back after some bad throws to give the defense again a lead with 5 mins to go against Jacksonville which again our defense gave up.
not to mention the Tennesse game that Eddie referred to.
As usual Hank….Whats your point?
Also as Eddie has pointed out… I have the ticket on Diret TV and have seen Stafford look horrible in games this year.
Yes, Sanchez seemed like he was doing fine the first few weeks. Now that people have figured him out, he looks like a a deer in headlights. He can’t even throw a ball away! Anyone who thinks that this team has a prayer at the playoffs with Sanchez in the driver seat is hallucinating.
not going to happen but toss our whole offensive philosophy, it works of your joe montana. i want to see at least one back where he should be, behind the qb, maybe 2 sometimes, and develop a ground game to end all ground games. get keller more involved and get a blocking tight end to compliment. use edwards like hes supposed to be used, the big play. mix it up you could run 10 plays out of this formation and that would be enough, if used creatively. cut down the brain damage. its not rocket science.
on defence, less yap and better tackling and hope for a healthy jenkins next year. we did have injuries, but our LB core really needs to be more punishing. as for the d-backs, not sure what the hell is going on back there, but rhodes no doubt is a liability.
Bottom line, i hope sanchez develops.
AKA Drew, What I’m saying is if the Jets want to field a crappy team then they should reduce ticket prices. I can’t imagine another entertainment venue where you would pay full price to attend a rehearsal. Can you?
AKA…Drew:
Seee….that is the problem. You drink too much koolaide…. it obscures you thinking !!
My question was was” did Franchez ever PULL out a win” and you answer with Tennesse.
I mean really, you really know how to obfuscate an issue and that has been the 40 year Jets problem.
You bring up a TD in the THIRD quarter. Now that is REALLY, pulling out a win, is’nt it?
Inagodadavida??
WHat does that to do with Pete Carroll’s somments you reffered to?
Plus…Havent the Jets lowered the ticket prices? I am not positive on that but all I hear is they are struggling to sell tickets for the new stadium and have reduced prices. I get them thru my company so I would never know the actual price
John Kubie-
Oh heck no, playoffs no way this year with Sanchez. Unless Jesus comes down on his white horse and strikes every team ahead of the Jets with a bolt of lighting from his arse…
But his career is not even close to doomed or over by any stretch of the imagination. He is a rookie in a system that has made good and legendary QBs look very mediocre
But we havent had a rookie QB start for the Jets for any length of time for years now, probably not since Browning Nagle. A lot of Jets fans forget how mightily a rookie QB struggles.
And in Sanchez case, he has been asked to do much, much, much more than Ryan and Flacco were. If you dont believe me, Harlan Lachman broke the numbers down in the post yesterday about Schotty
Did he give the Jets a lead late in the 4 quarter in the 1st Miami game and the Jacksonville game that the defense spit up?
Its really a simple answer to your silly question. The kid has not played great but those 2 games should have been won but our defense allowed bad offenses to drive down the field and win games.
Even a non Kool-Aid drinker can see that…unless you werent watching
looking for them to completly fall apart so we can get on with this current lost era … and finally bring in an established winning coach with with a proven system that isnt reaching in the grag bag weekly for a new approach , game plan , and attitude …. from banging heads with linebackers to cryin , playoff predictions and hot dogs , trash talk and boasting ….. i just wanna win ….
Pete Carroll said Sanchez wasn’t ready to go pro. He was correct. What I’m saying is why would a fan pay full price to watch an amateur? Now, if you adhere to the belief that Sanchez is a pro simply because he is being paid, then we will have a tough time carrying this conversation forward.
Have you guys ever played football without protection. Sanchez for some reason is scared to take a hit. The O-line is not giving him much time and when he gets time he’s trying to get rid of it soo quick. He should not be allowed to leave the pocket for the rest of the season during practice. Sanchez needs guidence and no ones giving it to him.
I would rather a late 1st pick so we can get a starter at a good price and not over pay anymore Gholstons.
lnagodadavida
I am saying he is a rookie. You can look at it anyway you want. He was the best QB on our roster in camp so he beat out KC. Does that make him a pro QB? I dont know but if you feel the team is filled with amatuer players than stay home. I see an organization that has spent a lot of money on FA’s in the last 3 years.
I didn’t say the team is filled with amateur players. But when you pay big money to watch the fat lady sing, and the fat lady has a sore throat, who is getting screwed?
Well Hank your problem is that you are so DRUNK with Hater-rade that you cant even acknowledge anything positive that this kid/coach/ team does
It REALLY is pulling out a win in the Tenn game. he REALLY would have had two more.if the defense had REALLY stopped the Phins and Jags,
But its REALLY hard to play QB, leave the game with the lead after trailing in the 4th Qtr and come back and pull out a win when there is no time left on the clock.
He REALLY has left the game leading TWICE late in the 4th Qrt. and the defense gave it right back up. You cant ask him to lead a drive than go out and stop the other team all by himself. HE did HIS job. Case closed. Whatever happened after that is not his fault.
You are the same guy who said Brett Favre was finished, I wouldnt let you run a 7-11 let alone a football team
really Joe B? Sanchez needs to cut down on turnovers?
What makes you say that?
(im being sarcastic)
Eddie DeGio- You, on the other hand, may be blinded by love.
Eddie DiGio- Are you Mark’s dad?
First id like to see Shotty simplify the offence.. Make Sanchez have two options every play (deep then Keller on a Hook just as they did last year for HOF farve…how many times do we watch sport center and they are breaking down how payton manning’s recievers got open..they are always running routes that compliment each other… we never do that…Marks playaction looks nothing like his handoffs. Ok the running game , why dont we do some counter action or maybe some off tackles….something creative like other teams who r successful….. and screens , were r the screens….Defence, kerry rhodes sucks, all aspecs …i dont understand his cockyness…. id like to see the rookie OL in getting some playing time, and Shonn Greene getting more carries
Inagodadavida,
I am gonna have to take Drew’s side here. You cannot say Sanchez is not ready. It almost seems like that you think he will never pan out? You cannot judge Sanchez after 10 games! That is just crazy. So then I ask you do you regret the Jets picking Sanchez? Wasn’t a big issue the Jets have had all these years is the fact that they never had a franchise QB? Sanchez needs to get used the the NFL style of play. And to think if anyone thought it would be another Matt Ryan repeat would be crazy. I like what sanchez brings to the table and I think with more seasoning he will be a good QB for the Jets down the road. But for right now we need to take the bumps.
this team doesn’t need a complete watershed. most of them are fairly established when it comes to their positions. what’s needed is a more common sense approach.this team is not playing the game as a whole but in parts with one good play followed by 3 bad ones . that’s a coaching issue. rex is failing as mangini did, on common sense plays such as kicking the ball twice to the same guy resulting in 14 pts. throwing pics in red zone. who’s fault is that. the coach ’s and his assistants. At 4-6, ryan has become a victim of his own fate and he finally realizes it. Of course house cleaning is necessary. hopefully , with 6 games left he’ll take that approach more wisely, one play at a time.
Well since Namath.
The teams Flacco and Ryan went to both had worse records the year before than the Jets. They too had rookie head coaches. If they could do more with less, there is no reason we cant. Not with the type of talent on this team. If Sanchez can’t get the job done, put someone out there who can. I’m not paying good money to watch a fledgling learn how to walk. I pay to see wins.
Sanchez has to start he on out…we r out of it..i do believe he should have been bench in two games this year..
I think Sanchez will be better than Joe Namath. I really do. I also think he would look better wearing panty hose, but that’s just my personal opinion. He just needs to settle down and stop listening to those who want to put him on a pedestal. He’ll get there on his own after taking a few knocks.
Inagodadavida
Its no secret I love the Jets but I dont get your point. I was simply saying that on 2 occasions Sanchez has left the game with a lead late in the 4th QRT. and the defense gave it right back up.
In earlier posts I was very clear that I thought while having a lot of physical ability, Sanchez is mentally or emotionally not ready to lead a team to the playoffs. He has been brilliant and putrid this season.
If Sanchez was in year 4 I would say that the Jets need to give up on him. I just do not give up on 23 year old rookie NFL QBs after they dont light the world on fire. Thats insane to think that way. Just because the bright spots came before the bad ones doesnt mean you throw it all away. Its call being FAIR not BLIND
I saw a guy by the name of Ryan Leaf play a few years back. When a guy looks like THAT, then you start to worry. But Sanchez started out this year 3-0 and 3/4s of his INTS came in 3 out of 11 games. Numbers dont lie man, no blindfold no nothing. When things have gone bad for him this year, they have really gone bad.
Another stat that is not blind love is the fact that Sanchez has been asked to do more than Ryan and Flacco were. Harlan Lachman posted all the numbers in black and white in yesterdays section on Schotty. Those numbers dont lie.
This kid was not some guy who went to some no where school and had a HUGE combine and got drafted. This kid was going to be a first rd NFL draft pick from the time he was a soph in high school. Scouts nationally since that time have dubbed him blue chip. This same guy had 4 teams in the top 15 picks drooling over him (Jax, Wash, SF and the NYJ). There is something there.
Im done trying to talk sense into you people. I will be rooting for this kid and this coach until Woody Johnson tells them both to take a hike. If it doesnt work out, Ill be man enough to come back to this blog and say I was wrong. But if they do work out, I dont want an apology or anything like that, I just hope that you guys are no longer Jets fans
get some playing time for gholston… woodhead…. and 2010 sure up your defense….with Kris Jenkins back you can have a top five defense….. a solid running game and most importantly a backup qb that can step in if this kid starts choking again next year…….he cost us the playoffs this year… lets get avg play out of the qb spot we will be in the playoffs next year…..
Inagodadavida
No Im not Marks Dad-Im yours-your mom never told you
Okay, I have a question.
Before the Jets drafted Gholston in 2008, he had 14 sacks his senior season as a DE. He is obviously a physical freak, why not let him take over for Marques Douglas as a DE? He could be the pass-rusher we need, he never really got the chance…I really think he’d be a good pass-rusher, and if we can seem something from him at DE, then we can decide if we need to draft a DE in the upcoming draft… I just don’t get it, don’t force a transition to OLB, and we are weaker at DE then at OLB.
I also, don’t wanna hear that he is too small to play DE. Cause he is listed at 264, Dwight Freeney is listed at 268, and look at what he can do..
I almost threw up whe Jake compared Freeny to Gholston….lol
Gholston has been lined up at DE and has prodcued ass! The guy beat college LT’s ( yes he beat J Long for 1 sack) and used his speed to get outside. His speed has been nueterlized at this level. He is also weight room strong. He has yet to show any strength playing OLB or DE.
Gholston’s problem is he has “zero” pass rushing skills other than a bull rush and goijg outside which in case you havent seen…do not work. Freeny came into the league with dominate pass rushing skills.
And Yes Jake he is too small to play 3-4 DE. Freeny plays 4-3 DE. Huge difference
Thank you for clearing that up,
So do you think Gholston is a complete bust?
And I did not compare Gholston to Freeney, I just said that they are almost the same size and Freeney has been very sucessful.
I’m looking for the Fat Man to learn to coach and for Bart Scott to magically reappear.
Where is the “IT” factor that Rex spoke so highly of of Sanchez.I think he forgot the”N” and it should of been the “INT” factor…U turn the ball over U lose games end of story and this Jet team does have enuff heart to come back in the 4th quarter with miraculous plays…I’ll say it for my last time SCHOTTY has to GO….He hasn’t been able to develope a good quarter back in his style of offense yet…CHAD had the brain but no arm and Sanchez has the arm but no ON FIELD COMMON SENSE…Schotty hope you go to Buffalo next year and knock them outta contention for good…NO matter how you all want to analyze it Sanchez is two years away from being a consistent pro football quarterback..1 year in college just isnt enuff experience and it will take 2 more in the PROS to get the results we are looking for…
Eddie DeGeo- Excuse me for observing you capitalized your references to Mark, i.e, His, so either you are a proponent of ManLove or a religious zealot. Either way, my mother wouldn’t have let you kiss her as@.
Jake…
I know you were just comparing their size but they play in completely different defenses.
I do think Gholston is a bust. Bust meaning he will NEVER live up to his draft # or salary.
I was not against him being selected by us but knew from watching him at OSU that there were way too many games he was a non-factor in the game. I saw some flashes but I was supsrised how much his stoxk rose.
I figured Mangini and then Rex could get something out of him. The fact is he just dosent have an NFL instincts and while he is big and fast it doesnt translate to the NFL field. No matter what position he plays
Inagodadavida
Eddie DeGeo- Excuse me for observing you capitalized your references to Mark, i.e, His, so either you are a proponent of ManLove or a religious zealot. Either way, my mother wouldn’t have let you kiss her as@.
If I capitalized my references to Mark it was a typographical error. I didnt know this was Time magazine so you can just settle yourself right down Internet Tough Guy. You turned this into to something childish when you questioned my sexuality for simply not willing to agree with you. I tried to make my arguments intelligently but it seems you want to just pick fights with people over the internet. You got a taste of your own medicine so go call the freakin WAAAAMM-Bulance.
Inagodadavida
Also, the capitalization of HIS was to imply EMPHASIS not to promote him as a religious being, the same way I used REALLY in the post. So why dont you go and excuse yourself for being a complete fool
Good night, Eddie. Make sure and take your meds.
What now? Let me tell you what now. I’m gonna call a couple of hard, pipe-hitting defensive ends & coaches to go to work on the team here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin’, pretty boy Sanchez, Rhodes, Faneca?! I ain’t through with you! Not by a damn sight. I’m gonna get medieval on all yo’ asses!
Or maybe I’ll just cry some more & talk big & do nothing.
Inagodadavida- nice cop out after you opened your mouth and made yourself out to be a complete TOOL
Rhodes is more interested in tweeting and promoting his Hollywood name. He needs to be benched along with Bryan Thomas and a few more underperforming JETS.
I do agree (for once) with Editor that benching Rhodes is not a bad idea. His play has been really bad the last 3 weeks….. I didnt thinkhe was playing that badly early on but recently its been very hard to defend.
Leonhard played his ass off against the Patriots with one hand and Rhodes puts in that effort? Just not good
time to sit Kerry Rhodes and play Eric Smith with Jim Leonhard. Rhodes just isn’t making any plays. Sit Bryan Thomas and play Gholston, give him a real shot to sink or swim, put VG in the position to be “the man” in Rex’s D and see if he can do something….anything? start playing Westerman & Cummings. Play the young guys, see what kind of depth this team has.
eddie digio…..ur post at 809pm was RIGHT ON.
there are many of us who share the exact same sentiments….
thanks for proving some of us have brains
westerman and gholston need to give the pass rush a lift, like sanchez gholston will only get better with experience and the jets are one loss away from being pretty much mathematically out of it.. jets put together win streak here vs three weaker teams and at 7-6, its game by game and they’re in it… but nothing is a given the way they are playing
Well, if it’s truly already about next year (seems obvious at this point), play Sanchito (but bench him in a 4-int game is a-ok), see what the depth chart holds and figure out who quits (Rhodes?, Gholly?) and who fights (TJ?, Leonhard?). Make it a solid point to get rid of the quitters after the season.
I was kind of off the Thomas Jones bandwagon earlier this year. I’ve been impressed with his toughness and general play over the last few weeks. Maybe we need to keep him around. TJ, Leon (hopefully) and Greene is a pretty good backfield for ‘10. Its possible that TJ is gone and Leon isn’t the same. That would hurt us, I don’t think Woodhead is really gonna be an NFL Tailback.
I no its the AFC and its tough, but to win out is still a possibility, and if we win out theres a small chance at playoffs. Not saying its gonna happen, just a thought. Otherwise, this is the last game of this season that Sanchez benching will be mentioned, because if they lose this week the season is gone and there is no point of putting him down. And if they win, clearly they are not gonna bench him. I’d like the Jets to verbally tell TJ that they want him back next year cause he is still at the top of his game, plus lets face it, leon is not gonna be back healthy next year, maybe never. Id like to see braylon edwards catch routine passes, dustin keller learn how to catch. A different running play besides the stretch. On the D side, less Rhodes, sign free agent saftey and try him out, mix and match. Better play out of the number 2 and 3 corners Sheppard and Lowery, Coleman. NO MORE MISSED TACKLES, this team has trouble as it is cause our QB spots the team amazing field position and spots them points, so we cannot afford to miss tackles. Also, how about a kick return for a TD. Clowney should be back there at all times. I just hope if they do start to win, they stay consistent and win out, instead of getting our hopes up
The Phins released DE/LB Mat Roth today. He was converted last year to LB and responded with 5 sacks, 4 pass def, 2 FF and 53 tackles. The kid is BIG and athletic. Worth a look.
In regards to Sanchez you simply do not give up on a rookie QB. There is zero statistical correlation between poor play in year 1 and a bad career. If he stinks next year its a different story, but right now he has to stay in and finish the season.
As for the rest of the year I would like to see the team start giving more reps to other players. The Jets are going to be in a position to draft a RB in the 1st round so they have to start using Greene more to see if there is anything there. They should start using Westerman and Gholston more as well since Thomas may be toast next season and that is also a position they could draft in round 1. The Jets should also try to shuffle Matt Slauson into these games to see if he can play and under no circumstances should they play Lito Sheppard and waste another draft pick on him.
If the Jets do not plan on going the youth route Id like to see them recover and finish 8-8. That would be a good building block for next season.
Call me crazy… but lets just see if we can beat the panthers first before we give up on this season and start looking towards the draft and all that stuff. We have all off season to look at that stuff.
Im sure im in the minority but lets just wait and see… you never know what can happen.
Hank – any idea why he was released?
I
najy, we’re all jets fans so deep down for whatever sick reason we all think that we have a chance.
guys not to sound like a person with too much hope but,the jets are 4-6 and the afc picture is still wide open for the playoffs and i could most of the teams ahead of the jets fall off i mean can you guys picture jacksonville or miami i think the jets if they would somehow some way win outright no matter how stupid it sounds still have a chance to fight for a playoff spot…next 3 games against carolina, buffalo, tampa bay..so thats 7-6 then atlanta and were home for that game then 2 tough games against indy and cincy but lets just see what happens it aint over yet
Brendan,
I know Roth was hurt for the begining of the year and Taylor and C Wake were the starters but Roth played well last year when he moved to OLD from DE.
Kind of suprising as I saw him play pretty well last week. He plays hard all the time. I think he was drafted in 2005 so he is still young. Def worth a look since he plays the 3-4. Parcells letting him go is troubling though
Guys the problem with the playoff talk is we have yet to show we can play consistently in 6 weeks. I just dont see us putting multiple wins to gether right now.
Stranger things have happened but Miami and Jacksonville have tie breakers over us… to make the story more clear the Bills are one game back of us at 3-7 so….
Is it true that Ryan made it known he’s going act like a head coach now by saying he lacked being involved in offensive decisions till now and with 6 games left he’s call plays or have some input.. Ryan needed that in game 4 not game11. It took 7 weeks for this knucklehead to realize head coach duties, what the f***. Understandably, this man doesn’t know much about offence , and certainly lacks the savvy for real time decisions on both ends. many say he’s not the problem , well then who is? ultimately any coach inherits full responsibility for his actions on both sides of the ball ,thus resulting in the teams current record. To acknowledge that now seems illogical and irresponsible ; and the players reflect that. they seem confused and fappable right now ,not intent on winning but trying to save face.
benching mr.hollywood this week for boldin killer
I don’t blame Rex for taking this long to get more involved in the offense. After all, he was led to believe that the Jets had a capable offensive coordinator.
The prospect of Eric Smith playing instead of Rhodes is compelling, but Smith did get beat by Kevin Faulk last week and would have given up a TD had Faulk been able to make the catch.
@ SackDance
I’m late to the game (Tgiving week!), but a hat tip to you. I don’t have explanations, but respect nevertheless.
Apparently Kerry Rhodes is getting benched…
Matt, do you have inside info or are you drawing that conclusion based on comments here? I doubt Rhodes will be benched, but many are hoping he will.
I’ll leave it to others to figure out the nuts and bolts of who should be where, or who gets more or less playing time, who’s a bust, who’s a stud, etc., etc.
From here on in, I only want one thing: Hard, gritty, well fought football games on a Sunday afternoon. I don’t care at this point if we’re only fighting for .500. Hell, the run that Ray Lucas took us on (after Vinnie tore up his achilles and that Seattle guy was a flop) just to reach 8-8 was one of the more thrilling finishes to any Jets season since the beginning. Also, Rex should be so lucky to do the kind of amazing coaching job that Parcells did that year to keep us from power-diving to a 2-14 debacle and somehow claw our way back to respectability.
I’d certainly take that outcome again this year. Of course, it’d mean we’d be going 4-2 over the last six games, which would make ME feel good until next summer, anyway.
I’m just so tired of dumb, half-assed football, like the last two picks and the fumble by Mark and flying torpedo dud tackle by Rhodes and the Braylon drops that he brought along from Cleveland.
Just stupid football. Makes my Sunday nights an ugly place to be.
Will said it best…
You play to win the game.
The goal is win each and every game. If that means Westermann and gholsten play, then fine. BUT, the goal is to win the game. Build a winning attitude, a winning culture, and winning program. YOu don’t accomplish that by giving up on the season in week 11. You never know what can happen… not that I’m optimistic, I just think you play each game to win and you teach your team that.
I wonder if Rex still thinks that Schott will be gone next year…. The man is not that good of an offensive coordinator…
benching rhodes….love it…. sends a message….
The Jets will never win with Brian Schottenheimer as the Offensive coordinator. Why is it that he just can’t seem to use the weapon that’s working in a game? Rush for 300+ in a game? The other team can’t stop your running backs at all? Lets throw the ball 29 times!!! Are you kidding? Schottenheimer has got to go. He’s completely incompetent.
FIRE SCHOTTENHEIMER!!!!
Also, Rex should be so lucky to do the kind of amazing coaching job that Parcells did that year to keep us from power-diving to a 2-14 debacle and somehow claw our way back to respectability.Playing skill games up against other users for cash has become very popular lately. The uniqueness of a skill game is that the game’s outcome is predominantly determined by players
As long as we have Schitty calling the plays, it is over this year. I just can’t believe the love the FO has for him.
Get Danny Woodhead involved in a slot receiver role..hopefully short passes reduces the INT’s and Danny will get those ‘Wes Welker’ yards after catch.
Guys,
I know everyone is all hellfire and brimstone with Rhodes, but Eric Smith is most certainly not the answer. He can be good in a hybrid safety role (although that didn’t work last week) but you will see that his range is about 70% of what Rhodes’ is (that’s being nice about it). I’m not saying Rhodes has played well at all, but Smith is a SS by trade and unless Leonhard is shifting to FS this will be bad when Steve Smith is flying around 40+ yards downfield.
have a seat kerry ……. we can lose just as easily without you …
Brendan,
I have defended Rhodes since day 1. The fact is the last 2 games when we needed to have a big showing he played his worst 2 games of the season.
If he is benched its not because E Smith is better its to
A) send a message to Kerry and the team
B) Rex looks at the film and saw what we saw. Not max effort from a guy who is supposed to be a bigtime player for us.
The fantasy is gone. So what? Now that it’s over, did anyone really believe in their heart of hearts that we were going to the SUPER BOWL with a first year Coach and QB?
If at the end of the season, Ssnchez is on par statistically with some of the best QB rookie campaigns and we go .500 for the season, I’ll feel good about where we are, moving forward.
Jay Glazer is reporting that Jet players have told him Kerry is getting benched this week
Drew,
I’m not arguing that Rhodes has played well, I’m not even saying he’s been decent in the recent weeks. All I’m saying is that people who are expecting the defense to greatly improve now that Rhodes is out are fooling themselves.
AKA….Drew,
Did the Titans look like they were capeable of winning 4 games in a row?
I am now so pro Ryan its not even funny.
He has just benched Kerry Rhodes for Eric Smith.
Yup…. the Daily News reported.
Brendan,
Agreed but sometimes you have to lose the battle to win the war. Rex is sendiong a messasge that its not Club Med at Floram Park.
Less talent maybe more effort is what this team needs right now
Yeah, I’m not arguing the decision. Rex is doing what he can to shake things up. I’m just having nightmares of Steve Smith running wild. Then I think of Revis and my heart beat drops under 200.
Carolina is going to run the ball 90% of the time ans as you mentioned….
S Smith umm Revis. Were good there
Najy,
Tenn looked brutal and then they gave V Young the reins which everyone expeted to go horribly wrong
Young has looked the ROY from 3 years ago. We dont have the luxury.
I would love to see it but the reality is its not going to happen
my game plan calls for more drinking in the parking lot
KenB,
That’s always the gameplan.
I am just saying… we won the games in a row to start off the year. I think we are capeable of putting a few wins together to make a run at the playoffs. It all starts with Carolina.
Like Brendan said…. for whatever sick reason.
I would like to see Rhodes benched for a quarter or a half against Carolina. I hate the guy, I think he’s incredibly lazy and probably the most overrated safety in the entire league, but his trade value will not increase sitting on the bench. Hopefully that move will inspire him to play just well enough to be traded, or who knows, maybe bashes into his head that he needs to work to be successful at this level and he turns his season and career around (doubt it).
I would like to see the team win at least one game on the strength of Sanchez, similar to how Eli Manning won the last game of the 2004 season, marching the Giants down the field in the final minutes to beat the Cowboys. It would make me feel much better about his prospects heading into 2010.
“If Rhodes finishes the season on the bench, he almost certainly will be traded in the offseason. The Jets would take an enormous cap hit, but they’d be able to manage it because 2010 looms as an uncapped year.”
Um, that second part is not true, right? Or at least not completely true?
That was from Cimini’s blog post about the Rhodes benching, btw.
I cant believe how much Rhodes has fallen off since 2006- 2007…
I dont see the point in benching Kerry Rhodes. Is it his fault Sanchez is turning the ball over? Is it his fault our passing attack is doing horribly? Somethings up with this offense it just doesn’t make sense to me.
Favre comes in here throws 100 hundred picks then next year with lesser receivers barely throws 5?
Schotty needs to go.
I wonder if we can call up Favre or Pennington to help Snachez out through this time of serious need.
He is still The Sanchize and I still believe in him, and I still believe if the right people lose Playoffs are in our face.
Kerry Rhodes as well. How is Rhodes supposed to get a FF if other people are getting there first? How is he supposed to get a sack if other people are getting there faster? How is he supposed to get a Int when we are killing the QB’s. I’m just saying there are a lot of playmakers on our defense.
At the same time though, I wonder what we could get off of Rhodes? How about Rhodes and a pick for Peppers. Hey draft Taylor Mays and we have something there.
http://twitter.com/Jay_Glazer/status/6041794657
Kerry is being benched
Can we please try to win som goddam games! This is sickening…
A soccer team in England is paying its fans tickets back because they played so poorly. I wonder if we can get a refund for this abortion of a season: http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/22/man-of-the-match-or-tottenhams-man-of-the-year/
Brendan;
You are right in what you know, additonally to that supposedly he misled sperano about his injury and the coach was not happy.
I believe that, and the fact he was playing behid Taylor widen the rift between him and Sperano.
He was a second round (#46 i think) BIG (6′4′ 275) and very athletic. I Like him, he is a high motor, strong guy Just starting to learn his position. GREAT UPSIDE !!!
His numbers are very impressive considering he was learning on the fly and in only 14 games.
Ok, Rex benching Kerry Rhodes is hopefully the first in a swift series of jetsexcutions.
Schottenheimer is next.
I can rub a better offense than both he and Brian Daboll combined.
Brendan – We believe it is partially incorrect, but even league sources have opposing views on the matter. However, the rules do state that there is no acceleration of signing bonuses in uncapped years, so deliberately taking an enormous cap hit in an uncapped year would not seem possible, unless they are somehow able to do something funky.
For Rhodes, instead of the 12m dead money cap hit that would arise in an capped year, there would be somewhere in the region of a 3m cap hit in the uncapped year, but the bonus would not accelerate, so there would still be about an 9m cap charge in 2011, assuming that year is capped.
Trading him for someone like Peppers would definitely be pretty unlikely from a cap perspective unless they make use of the uncapped year or they have a major clearout, because they’ve already committed enough money before having a huge cap hit for trading Rhodes early and also adding Peppers sure-to-be-huge deal.
The situation for Gholston is slightly different because much of his guaranteed money is in the form of salaries that are yet to be paid, so if they can advance all of it to him next year and cut him, then they will be able to get most of the cap hit into the uncapped year. Not all of it though.
Next year may yet have a cap though. On the other hand there may never be a cap again.
AKA…DREW:
“I cant believe how much Rhodes has fallen off since 2006- 2007″
Believe it. I can’t believe the way Fonzie was Insulted, even crucified by the lot of you only because he was AHEAD OF THE CURVE with this guy! I believe Fonzie is owed a BIG time APOLOGY !!!!
even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
Rhodes played well until the last few games, but he has been pressing and gambling because everyone has been saying he needs to make more big plays. Fonzie wasn’t “ahead of the curve” he was just wrong.
I think the Jets coverage packages are going to struggle this week if he doesn’t play, but I like the message that benching him sends.
Hank – Considering the problems you have with Tannenbaum not honoring contracts, where do you stand on what they should do with Rhodes? Clearly you don’t like the guy, but according to your reasoning, should they keep him on the roster until they’ve paid him the $33.5m they “owe” him?
Bent,
Thanks for clearing that up. I have heard conflicting reports and it’s making it hard to know how the Jets will be looking to act going into this offseason.
The reports continue to be conflicting, so I can’t guarantee that 100%, but that seems to make the most sense. We keep trying to get formal confirmation.
Gholston’s fate might be decided over these next six games, although in an uncapped year, there’s nothing to be lost by giving him another shot in camp next year and seeing if he builds on his undeniable (albeit slower than hoped) improvement since last year.
Rhodes is a more tricky proposition. If they view him as a negative influence, I guess they’ll take the hit and maybe use the uncapped year as far as is possible to create extra space to cover the hit in 2011.
As Jets fans the best possible outcome (by a long margin) is for Rhodes to get his act together and start playing well again.
I defended Rhodes when he was playing well weeks 1-4 and have apologized for defending him recently as his play have gotten worse.
I have no probelm admitting when I see things wrong. Early on he was being singled out in my mind cause he tweets and is cockywhen he was playing “okay”
The last 2 games have been awful and he effort has to be questioned at this point
In my opinion unless Gholston found some pass rushing skills and an NFL required game on the bench the last 2 weeks…. his fate is altready sealed for this team I dont care how old he is. The light has been trying to go on for 2 years now and ……nothing
Sanchez has started more games than Gholston but, he is allowed to learn and mature and Gholston is a bust. You guys have absolutely no patience. Sanchez is a bigger bust than Gholston, at this point. Give Gholston some time. He’ll become a player.
Good point. He’s also started more games than Clemens!
Is Hank the same person as Fonzie? In which case Hank is trying to convince people to apologize to himself?
Bent:
Glad you asked. First ,my problem with contracts is when they are not honored and the players perform to expectation but the bean counter and his suck-up want to save $$$$$. I just wanted to clear that up.
Second, I (and Fonzie) have been clear fro the beggining that Hallowwood Rhodes has skated by since mid ‘07 and should not have been hailed as an elite DB by most media sharks and most TJB posters.
Since his performance continues to decline, he should be benched ( although about a year late) and given the rest of the season to earn his $$$$. If it still doesn’t happen he should be released ( see M. Roth Dolphins) or traded if possible.
Does that answer your question?
Bent:
I also said prior to the start of the season for everyone to watch that Mangini will wind up with Gholston for a low draft pick. Just watch.
It wasn’t supposed to be a trick question. The only problem I have with your answer is that, in my opinion, Baker, Coles and Kendall were all underperforming when the Jets decided to not pay them.
As for Mangini getting Gholston, he’ll need to retain his job first.
