Blips on the Radar?

by Bassett on November 25th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

All eyes are on Kerry Rhodes, witness Rich Cimini’s post on his blog on NYDN.

At 12:13, about 23 minutes into practice, Kerry Rhodes took off his shoulder pads and helmet and jogged off the practice field, toward the locker room.

At 12:28, he returned, wearing his pads and carrying his helmet. He chatted for a minute on the field with Rex Ryan.

Going off the field is probably not common, but let’s face it, it could be for any number of reasons unrelated to what’s happening this week. It could be that the pads were faulty, it could have been that he had to take a wicked doozer, so really .. who knows? Until the question is asked of him, and even after that, we still probably won’t know.

The timing to the press is interesting, but his Twitter account has been dormant since Sunday (which is never the case) so although this is his first NFL sanctioned practice, he’s probably known what’s going on since Monday night.

Just like we have to endure this season with a rookie QB, we also have to endure this season with a rookie Head Coach. The Rhodes benching should of happened several games ago.

  2. avatar Bent says:

A wicked doozer? You’re going to have to explain that one. As far as I’m aware THIS is a wicked doozer:

  3. avatar cabras says:

The best #25 in Jet history = Scott Dierking!!

    Bill cower rumors anyone?

  5. avatar cabras says:

    Reality jet fan,

Please stop the coaching carousel, Cowher would not last here either.

He’s done nothing all yr and he worry about life after football and proball give me a break

Like Kerry Rhodes, sometimes I have to step away from TJB to take a wicked doozer. Other then that, I am always here.

  8. avatar reality jet fan says:

cabras what do you mean he wouldnt last here. Please tell me you would dump ryan in a heartbeat for bill cowher.

I only said that because francesca said there is rumblings that the jets are looking into cowhers situation

  11. avatar Neon Leon 29 says:

Rex Ryan is the head coach, he gets a pass for this first season, regardless of how this finishes, as he has had one draft thus far and hasn’t put together all of his pieces yet. Not to mention the rook at QB. This Cowher talk is nonsense, and Francesa is a blabbering mess.

  12. avatar Neon Leon 29 says:

Not to mention I can see Cowher holding off for a couple more seasons before jumping back into the coaching game. If at that point Rex hasn’t gotten the job done, then by all means you pursue the big fish ala Bill Cowher.

  13. avatar reality jet fan says:

I understand who the coach but know jet fan with a brain would turn down cowher right now.

  14. avatar SackDance99 says:

    RJF,

I like Cowher a lot and I still think it makes less than zero sense firing Rex after 1 season. Let’s see, Rex is starting a rookie QB (and one with just 1 year of Div. I starting experience), lost his best defensive player, lost his best offensive player and installed an entirely new defensive system. With all of these negatives, the Jets are 4-6 and have a chance to still have a winning record. If the Jets make it to 9-7 with the tough schedule that they’ve had this year on top of everything else, Ryan’s first year would, objectively, be viewed as a success.

Now, lets’ say the Jets lose all the rest of their games and fall to 4-12, why would Cowher join the Jets? He’d be the 3rd coach in 3 years for a team that sandwiched a 9-7 record against weak competition between 2 4-12 debacles. The only way the Jets situation makes sense for Cowher is if the Jets are in the 7-9 to 9-7 mediocre range and, given what has befallen the Jets so far, Rex would deserve a second year on merit.

Cowher had his chance last year and declined. Moreover, it’s widely known that Cowher has a big house in NC and John Fox is on the hotseat at Carolina. Assuming that Cowher would be paid the same money, the Carolina job, out of the glare of the NY media, is a far better gig.

I’d rather lure Weis as the OC after he’s fired by ND. Weis is great at grooming young QBs and, IMO, his offensive schemes were the best that I had ever seen run by the Jets. He’d be the perfect fit.

  15. avatar steviek says:

if rhodes get benched, i really like the move.

it sends a message to the team, a contract doesnt matter, a reputation doesnt matter, draft status doesnt matter. obviously, its never 1 guys fault, but short of cutting someone this needs to be done.

rex has given them alot of leeway in the scheme, days off, etc., all the things players bitch about not getting.

depending on the cap hit i wouldnt cry if rhodes got released. not that he’s a bad player, but at this point in his career a certain level of activity & production is needed for the money he’s getting. i’d rather take those dollars and apply it elsewhere.

if you’re not getting it done someone else will. i am very curious how the defense will respond.

  16. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

Any thoughts on Florio’s article? He makes it sound like cutting Rhodes might not be all that bad cap-wise.

  17. avatar Neon Leon 29 says:

Imagine Rex and Weis standing next to each other on the sideline?! Hide the Twinkies!

  18. avatar reality jet fan says:

I cant believe what the f@ck i am reading. Typical jet fans thinking small! That is why people hate us because of nonsense. The reason i am sure we didnt get cowher is because that moron gm didnt want to give up his power. If we can get cowher then we get him not even a second to thinkl about it!

  19. avatar Bent says:

Sack – I’d already factored in the roster bonuses, but if that salary is not guaranteed, it could reduce the cap hit accordingly. I think that, despite this revelation, cutting him would still prove costly (even with the uncapped year) but trading him is more realistic. They’d need to find a team that was prepared to pay the rest of his salary and obviously gave them good value in return.

  20. avatar reality jet fan says:

It took our hc 11 weeks to start doing his job. Now he decides to pay attention to the off and special teams. You must be kidding me and i am sure you were writing the same positive stuff about mangini . Go get cowher give him whatever he wants.

  21. avatar reality jet fan says:

Who cares if kerry rhodes is benched the season is over and we have a hc ruining our young qb!

  22. avatar Neon Leon 29 says:

    RJF,

You do understand that in ’92 when Cowher was given his opportunity with the Steelers, which he most certainly made the most of, he had previously been a successful DC with the Chiefs right? Now it is Rex Ryan’s turn to get his shot. The organization has made a commitment to Rex and why not give the guy a fair shot to succeed? Instead you want to FIRE him after a single season where he lost multiple key players and has a rookie QB? You’ve got to be kidding me.

  23. avatar reality jet fan says:

As usual the jets go the coordinator route and it will fail.I will tell u guys after cowher is hired lets see which team starts winning first cowhers new team or the same ol jets . Cant wait to see that!

  24. avatar reality jet fan says:

Get the big name. I dont know why but we never get anything right. We will never get the coordinator who works out.

  25. avatar reality jet fan says:

Three years from now when we are looking for a new head coach and cowher is in the playoffs or superbowl i will remember your words of wisdom.

  26. avatar SackDance99 says:

    rjf,

I can’t believe that you want the Jets to fire a 1st year coach. Last time that happened, Pete Carroll was fired and we got Kotite!!! Cowher doesn’t want to come to NY. Tanny, Woody and everyone else denied that the GM situation was an issue. Also, it usually never works when the HC is also the GM…even control freak BB has a GM. To me, it’s typical SOJ mentality to always look for something new instead of sticking with a plan. The Steelers since 1969 have 3 HCs and you’re proposing that the Jets hire their 3rd HC in 3 years…SOJ, SOJ, SOJ!!!!!!!

Plus, as much as I like Cowher, the Steelers have a pretty good infrastructure there. Look at the players Cowher inherited when he became coach…it’s a who’s who of great players: Woodson, Lake, Nickerson, Lloyd, Dawson, Green, Foster, etc. The Steelers have just been a model NFL franchise that knows how to build through the draft. They lose Cowher and Tomlin wins a Super Bowl, too. Maybe, Cowher unplugged from the Pittsburgh infrastructure would struggle. Remember George Seifert? He didn’t exactly look like an SB winning coach with Carolina.

And, on top of everything else, the Jets would get out-bid for his services by Carolina…his home is there!!! Sorry, but your idea just wreaks of past SOJ failure.

  27. avatar clint says:

bench scott next anyone? i would, he’s all talk and hasn’t put much up yet. I’d put Westerman in.

  28. avatar Bent says:

I’m happy with Scott, personally. Bear in mind one of his primary responsibilities is to take on blockers to enable the DH to play in space and one of his others is to cover the TE, both of which he has excelled at.

  29. avatar ED says:

We should be looking at this the same way we look at players. No player is safe. Right? We’re always looking to upgrade the roster. Right? Coaching is the same thing. I agree firing Ryan would be unfair, but who the hell said life was fair? If Cowher would come here we have to take him and keep Ryan as a DC, or can him.

  30. avatar SackDance99 says:

    clint,

I guess the whole TED and MIKE distinction goes under the bus? Scott does all the dirty work, like he did for Ray Lewis, so Harris makes the stops…and Harris has more tackles than Lewis this season. Moreover, Scott is, by far, the top tackling off-ILB in the NFL, better than Timmons on Pittsburgh or his replacement in Baltimore. Scott hasn’t been perfect, but he’s made a lot of plays, enough to be the second leading tackler on the Jets behind Harris…that’s pretty much an unbelievable stat considering teams pass against the Jets way more than they run. Scott’s part of the solution…he plays with passion and commitment.

  31. avatar Crazy Eddie says:

Rod Boone just twat this: Telling response when Kerry Rhodes was asked if he wanted to be here beyond this season: “I’m not going to answer that right now.”

  32. Bench Scott? Are you serious?? Talk about SOJ mentality.

And fire Ryan after one year?? Are you Dan Snyder (as in when he fired Marty to hire Spurrier)? The grass is always greener, huh?
How about we actually give Ryan a chance and don’t expect him to be great his first year? Or would you want to fire Cowher after one bad year, too? Speaking of which, Cowher’s team didn’t do so well his first year. Neither did Parcell’s Giants. Neither did Belicheck’s Patriots. Knee jerk reaction, anyone?

  33. avatar Crazy Eddie says:

One reason the steelers are usually good? Continuity! They don’t fire their coaches for one bad season and change the whole system repeatedly. It takes time to build a franchise!

  34. “Twat” is the past tense of Twitter? That is effing awesome!

  35. avatar Bent says:

Thank goodness that word isn’t as offensive to Americans as it is over here.

If Scott responded to fans’ calls for him to make more plays by no longer taking on blocks and trying to get to the ball carrier on every play to the detriment of the team defense, then maybe i’d be on board with benching him.

  36. avatar greg sec 130 says:

RJF, no offense, but you are the ‘typical Jet fan’ and the reason why people hate us. Firing a coach because he lost 6 of 7 in a new system, etc etc? You sound like Leon Hess. “I want to win now.” I would have loved Pete Carroll to get a chance to coach year two and three.

Bill Cowher does not want to come here and he underachieved his whole career. It took him 14 years to win a championship with a better team than the Jets ever had. 14 years.

  37. avatar swizzle81 says:

Please stop with the Cowher talk. Does anyone really believe what Fat Mike says on the radio.

  38. avatar tyrone says:

it took cowher 15 to win a super bowl with pitt with the ny media and inpatient NY fans i doubt he will last and remember cowher is only good if dick labeu is running the defense dick is the man ryan has done a good job sanchez has lost at least 2 games 1 game by the st this team could easily be 7/3 dont blame the coach i see the games and the negative learn to analyze with brains not 30/20/40/ years of frustration and by the way the last time tthe jets won a SB Ryan dad was a defensive coach think about it we are almost there just be patient its not ryan fault we have not won a sb in40 years.

  39. avatar tyrone says:

sanchez will be better next year but we need another OC callahan and a veteran qb to help sanchez the defense will also be better jenkins will be back we will pick up some new players and the ball will be rolling

  40. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Yes Tyrone (though it actually took him 14 years). The funny thing is, the DC that took over for Cowher only needed two years.

  41. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

i agree jets will roll next year but im not throwing in the towel just yet. im still holding out for above or at .500

  42. avatar greg sec 130 says:

agreed — one game at a time and it’s not out of the realm of possibility to be sitting at 7-6 with three tough games to go. If you think about it, there’s not a game left that wouldn’t be disappointing other than Indy. Assume we lose at Buff or Tampa and 8-8, with wins vs Atlanta and closing out vs Cincy would be great.

  43. avatar Shamik says:

I wouldn’t want Cowher. My opinion of Rex Ryan has been rapidly declining, but I’d rather have a hungry, younger guy with something to prove like Sean Payton or (gulp) a young Bill Belichick. I’ll give him another year to work out the kinks and get some more players that better fit his scheme. But the blown plays and abysmal tackling has got to stop, even a rookie coach can teach that. Bench Sanchez, let him clear his head and work on his reads and mechanics in practice. This also lets him know that he’s put to perform if he wants to play. Then he can compete for the starting gig next year. Hey, look at the world of good a benching did to Vince Young. Now if we only had a vet QB to mentor the Sanchize.

  44. avatar SackDance99 says:

Wow, “blown plays and abysmal tackling”????? I’ve seen no evidence of chronic instances of either. Instead, I see a defense without their best player have to spend too much time on the field because their rookie QB doesn’t complete enough passes to sustain drives or keep possession of the football. I mean the Jets and Rex deserve criticism, but IMO the defense isn’t the main culprit.

Again, benching Sanchez makes no sense, especially now. QBs like Eli and Cutler rode the pine to watch vet QBs run the offense and then came in. But, even with that time on the bench, Sanchez has performed better than Eli did, but worse than Cutler. The season isn’t over, so let’s see what Rex can do with Sanchez for the rest of the season before we draw too many conclusions. Like I said before, Sanchez was great the first 3 games and has completed passes of over 40 yards to 4 different receivers. There’s a lot of talent there and nobody questions his work ethic or desire to improve. But, he’s a 23-year old kid who only had 16 Div. I starts.

  45. avatar SackDance99 says:

Rex has instituted a “code” system for sanchez…let’s see if it works:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4690388

  46. avatar matt says:

rex will be fine,,,, stick to the formula next year of a top five defense ( when Kris Jenkins is healthy + a nice draft pick) a solid run game top three or four in the league… and a get a solid backup for Sanchez…. if Sanchez starts to flounder you yank him next year…. if he does that the Jets will be in the playoffs in 2010

  47. avatar Shamik says:

All I know is that pretty much this entire decade, this team has had the talent to match up with anyone. But we’ve been killed time and time again due to bad QB (due to health/incompetence). Why didnt we go for the guy with more experience? By the time Sanchez is ready to go, all the other playmakers around him will be gone and he’ll be struggling to carry yet another rebuilding project.

  48. avatar SackDance99 says:

The Jets offensive core is relatively young. Brick, Mangold, Greene, Keller, Edwards, Leon, Clowney and Cotchery are all 27 or younger. Even Moore is still under 30 and virtually all of the back ups are under 30.

I don’t know if Sanchez will pan out or not, but I was tired of vet QBs coming in past their primes: Boomer, O’Donnell, Vinny, Favre. The only vet who took the Jets deep into the playoffs was Vinny T…but for just 2 seasons. After his ’99 injury, Vinny was, more or less, done. Namath, Todd, O’Brien and Chad…all 1st round draft picks and they are the QBs with the overwhelming majority of Jets playoff appearances.

So, Sanchez at 23 has a young offense around him that could, with the exceptions of Faneca, Jones, Woody and Richardson be together 5 or more years together. I just don’t see the “rebuilding.” Plus, if Sanchez trends like most NFL 1st round picks that succeed, next season should be when he really prospers.

“Hey, look at the world of good a benching did to Vince Young. Now if we only had a vet QB to mentor the Sanchize.”

    Two points
1 It took a loooooooooonngg time for Jeff Fisher to bench Vince Young, like a year and a half
2 You are dead on about bringing in a vet. That should be a priority this off season, a veteran backup to help this kid along and get in his ear during games. Schotty and Clemens are not the answer, that needs to change this off season

  51. avatar Jets69 says:

Rhodes lost his fire when he got the big contract. Time to move him and get Taylor Mays. Then Welker won’t be running free over the middle. While they are at the USC pro day they should grab Damien Willims for Sanchez

  52. avatar Broadway12 says:

I always defended Rhodes even last year but its obvious the guy plays soft. But did’nt he play SS when he had the good yrs early in his career? But after seeing his reluctance to hit someone that would’nt wk either putting him there. Plus I like Leonhard. Time to draft a FS and a CB but at least more help on the D line we need more heat that can hide the weak secondary minus REVIS(hands down the best CB)

  53. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    Jets69,

Good call. I’d love to double dip Taylor Mays, Damien Williams from the Spoild Children, but doubtful we can. In addition, Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan.

    Go Jets!

  54. avatar Jetsrdone says:

The only time that the Jets were any good in the last three decades was when Bill Parcells was the head coach….After the Kotite debacle, Hess finally learned how to pick a head coach…I wish he was still around because Woody hasn’t learned yet….Hire a proven winner, especially when there are a lot out there (Cowher, Gruden, Shanahan, Holmgren, etc.)…

  55. avatar Bent says:

Rhodes was more of a strong safety in 2006, because he was paired with Erik Coleman. Once the Jets started Abram Elam, who is poor in coverage, he had to move to free safety. He was also able to play in the box a lot less because Harris is not as good at dropping into zone coverage as Vilma, a change which happened at pretty much the same time.

  56. avatar James in TN says:

QUIT THE TALK OF FIRING REX, FIRE SCHOTTENHEIMER. ITS JUST THAT SIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

except for you Schitty son of Marty, I am not thankful we have you mucking up the offense.

    Go JETS!!!!!!

  57. avatar Dan in OK says:

“Typical jet fans thinking small! That is why people hate us because of nonsense”. No RJF, you are why people hate us. Only 11 games, NOT EVEN A FULL SEASON, and your screaming we should fire our coach. That is what makes us the mockery of the NFL.
