Film Room: Rhodes on Wheelhouse 11/24

by Bassett on November 25th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Some of you mentioned this in the comments, but here’s Kerry Rhodes via the phone on SNY last night. This was before the news was broken that Rhodes was going to be benched this week.

He’s gotta get ready for his “after life”?

This just in…..YOU’RE GETTING PAID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO PERFORM NOW!!!!

  2. avatar bungi says:

Get ready for your after life in the offseason idiot.

  3. avatar Zartan says:

speaking of mativation, who is there to fire this team up before games. the jets have never come out looking to hit someone in the mouth on the first play since i’ve been a fan. who is there to jump on someone for not putting in max effort.

Revis, Loenard, Harris , Strickland and Jenkins are the only guys that play hard and are our only players. Everyone else is failing the team . If you guys think this team was good then you were all fools.

  4. avatar Rich Kotite 2.0 says:

I remember reading after the 2006 season that Kerry Rhodes bulked up to be more physical in run support. Now that we have better run defense, I wonder if the extra bulk has slowed him down a step and contributed a little bit to his decline in play. Anyone else remember this?

  5. avatar They Chose Me says:

Someone wrote an article somewhere (very specific!), I think it was SI, about the way a championship team SOUNDS, that pop you hear on every play.

The Raven teams sounded like that, and I thought this team would too– they did against NE week 2. I know the players aren’t here on D, but that is what I would love this D to be like— Rhodes is not that type of player.

  6. avatar tom says:

the best defenses come out with a killer mentality! they feel if your gonna get any yards your gonna pay to get them! top defenses fly to the ball & punish the ball carrier! this team just talked like they were gonna be a defense like that & havent backed it up, starting with rhodes! we dont need MODELS on this team we need LEADERS!

  7. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

you guys suck…how many of you have had a bad day? a bad week? a bad month at your jobs? is there someone there talking crap about you 24/7 NO. You do have a point about him not performing and this is a new defense. You guys would rather have him go somewhere else and be a what he was before rather than have him stick it out here? maybe the bills, phins, or even the pats?……….give him a break

  8. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

its not like hes schotty or nething

  9. avatar nyckage says:

Can anyone say Eric Berry. I can Eric Berry = Ed Reed for real this time

  10. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

Francesa and Glazer mentioned this today but thought it was ridiculous, nonetheless since no one else has mentioned, and I am totally rooting for it to happen and posted such on Monday, I will copy here in the hope that by spreading it as rumor a light bulb goes on in Woody’s head (or someone mentions to him at Thanksging dinner):

When listing possible Cowher suitors, don’t forget the Jets

Posted by Mike Florio on November 25, 2009 9:41 AM ET.

As the tarp is being removed from the NFL’s coaching carousel, one thing we know is that, in the end, there will be some unexpected seats on the ride.

And with word already leaking of possible destinations for former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, it would be unrealistic at this point to rule out the New York Jets.

Last year, the Jets were interested. But the presence — and the authority — of G.M. Mike Tannenbaum kept Cowher from pursuing the opportunity, since he will want to run the show, presumably with the assistance of his former Pittsburgh lieutenants, Kevin Colbert and Omar Khan.

This time around, another season featuring early excitement followed by a cold splash of 1-6 reality likely will result in another non-trip to the playoffs, despite plenty of hype and big talking.

So Tannenbaum, who traded for Brett Favre in 2008 and traded up to draft Mark Sanchez in 2009, could be on shaky ground. And if Tannenbaum gets the Christmas-tree-in-January treatment, the possibility of making another run at Cowher cannot be disregarded.

Of course, that would require the Jets to fire Rex Ryan after only one year.

    Bill Cowher. Rex Ryan.

    Bill Cowher. Rex Ryan.

    Bill Cowher. Rex Ryan.

When combining the frustration that got Eric Mangini fired after the 2008 season with the reality that the Personal Seat Licenses at the new stadium won’t be selling themselves, the decision shouldn’t be all that difficult, should it?

  11. avatar greg sec 130 says:

    bleedsgreen&white –

If I had a bad month at my job, people would die. So to answer your question, yes, a bad day or week or month can be very costly to other people, and I would likely lose my job, let alone get yelled at or insulted.

I’m not saying Rhodes’ poor play is costing lives just because mine does, but you should not tell me that after paying $4,404 in season tickets I should not be allowed to mouth off about Hollywood’s poor play because other people in this world can get by doing a bad job at their job and not be held accountable.

Oh, and thanks for telling us we all suck because we are insulting someone else.

  12. avatar greg sec 130 says:

WOJF, it took Bill Cowher 14 seasons to win a championship with a great team, yet the DC that replaced him only need two.

  13. avatar greg sec 130 says:

    *needed :)

  14. avatar SoFlaJets says:

can we also get rid of Schottenheimer and Tannenbaum when we hire Cowher? Sign me up. Won’t ever happen but, I’d say yes.

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Really? We’re going to fire Rex Ryan after one season with a rookie QB? Florio just likes to rock the Jets’ boat.

  16. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Let’s keep firing our head coach every season until we win the Super Bowl, regardless of the personnel.

  17. avatar Kyle says:

Anyone hear the reports about Sanchez and his nose candy?

  18. avatar Brendan says:

Kyle, where did you hear about that?

  19. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

It would be really hard to knock a Bill Cowher hire, but I dont think the Jets would have to do it next season.Cowher is pretty happy doing the TV thing right now. He wouldnt even talk to the Bills about the open HC spot. Doesnt seem like he is interested in coaching at this point in his life. But you never really know.

For the record Rex deserves a chance to try and build a winner HIS WAY. I love the guy and unless Mike Tomlin left the Steelers, there isnt another coach out there I want to lead this team

  20. avatar greg sec 130 says:

And for the record, Mike Tomlin lost four of his last five games his rookie season, but Pittsburgh didn’t go out and get Shanahan or Holmgren to replace him.

More importantly, you need to maintain some consistency with the program for more than two years. I believe every coach and system should be given three years unless it is clear there is deep-rooted problems (see: Eric Mangini in Cleveland).

  21. avatar jay says:

cowher please! fatboy is going to take us no where and that 5foot 2 QB we have is a joke

  22. avatar hangar says:

    Kyle
A statemen like that should not be said unless you can back it up…so where did you hear the repor?

Where were most of you when the JETS were 3-0. Were you looking for Cowher?

How many truly believed in August this team was going to the play-offs with a Rookie HC and QB?

    8-8, 9-7 at best

  23. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Good job hangar and greg 130- there are some intelligent fans out there that understand it takes time to win consistently in the NFL

  24. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

    to greg sec 130

you have a good point on both fronts…im not gonna lie i had huge amount of hope for this season but ultimately its a new system…new hc…rookie qb but there are certain things that arent working out and its true hollywood is one of em. My true problem is with schotty tho just like most of you think he just doesnt cut it as an hc

greg sec 130 keep up the good work it could be my life one day on the line…much respect to public servants ie cops fire fighters emts etc…doctors…

  25. avatar Dean Barbella says:

Good Move, Rex. This audio clip was recorded less than 24 hours before Rhodes benching.

I do not hear any ownership, responsibility, remorse – just Same Ol’ Chatter.

He’s hard-headed and thick-skinned. Hopefully, his new view from the sidelines steer his focus back to Hoftstra, not Hollywood.

  26. avatar Brendan says:

    jay,

Our “5 foot 2″ quarterback is about the same height as guys like Aaron Rogers, Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, Brett Favre, Donovan Mcnabb, David Garrard. All those guys are around 6’2 (which is the same height Sanchez is.

You calling for Cowher 10 games into Rex’s first year just shows your SOJ mentality. It took Football God Cowher 14 years to win his first Superbowl with good teams, but you want to fire Rex 10 games in with his best defensive player out for the season, his best defensive player out for the year, a rookie QB, a new defensive system, and a dolt for a offensive coordinator? Come on already.

  27. avatar Zartan says:

    Brendan, thanks

i think that Rex will figure this thing out. He needs to get the offensive players to be deffensive.

  28. Dear Kerry,

Thanks for confirming what we already knew when you talked about the importance of the “flipside afterlife” yesterday on SNY. You acknowledged that you are all about the afterparty, the diamond earings, the duds, and your $$$$ making opportunities in the “afterlife”. You are NOTHING about grit, courage, leadership, and protecting your teammates on the field. You have no heart.

We all watched your uninspired and lifeless non performance sunday, how you pulled up over and over to avoid making contact with the opponent. How everyone but you left their feet to make hits. Your only hits occurred when the opponent ran you over 15 yards downfield, and that happened only because they ran right at you and you had no time to get out of the way. Kerry, you knuckelhead, you were so far away from the line of scrimmage you were off the TV screen! It was 12 Patriots vs 11 Jets because you sold out your team. Disgraceful and NOT ACCEPTABLE. What a soft girlie man you’ve become.

What the Jets need is an ED REED in centerfield, not your soft sorry pretty little butt. They would be best served by jettisoning you to the Browns or Lions while you still have trade value. They deserve a prima dona like you.

YOU ARE THE BIGGEST FRAUD ON THIS TEAM.

SNY please take this joker off of your TV show. He does not deserve to represent the New York Jets!!

  29. avatar 50 year Jet fan says:

Dispite the bad play by Rhodes the last two weeks, we are still # 5 Defensive team in the NFL. Rex needs to get more involved with every facet of the game, Learn tthe other side of the game, just as his Rookie QB has to learn the NFL game. GO JETS!

  30. avatar hangar says:

    Jorge
Excellent….I wish I had a dollar everytime I screemed at this guy Sunday. He was a piece of $h1t and left his team hanging out there. Notice everytime he blew the coverage, he was looking up like it was someone else who was to be there!!! Than when he had a chance to make a hit, he dropped to he knees instead.
Yet many on this blog are looking for the head of a 23 year old rookie qb who took more hits that Rhodes.

  31. Thanks hangar,

Sanchez is intelligent and perceptive. He has heart, and shows he cares about his performance and his teammates. But he is a rookie. I blame the Jets for placing their season in the hands of a rookie QB. They should have brought in a veteran like Garcia if they didn’t think Clemens could back up the kid.

Rhodes has morphed into a me-first diamond studded model/actor soft girlie boy who has been corrupted by the fame and fortune of being an NFL player in NYC. His swan song was last nights’ commentary live on SNY, he did not even have the guts to show up at the studio and take the blame for his turd. Instead he ducked and stuttered and showed his true colors when he made those amazing “afterlife” comments.

The Jets need to reconsider the intelligence and maturity level of the athletes they bring into NY. Simpletons like Rhodes and Brick Ferguson have shown they dont’ have the intellect and character to make the transition.

  32. avatar Bent says:

Ferguson would be one of the last guys on the team I’d expect to fit that description. What makes you single him out along with Rhodes?

  33. avatar greg sec 130 says:

No worries bleeds — I totally get the frustration. The worst thing that happened to this team was the 3-0 start, but hopefully it also can be a good thing in the end. Maybe this team wins Sunday, turns that into a win in Buffalo, turns that into a win in Tampa. Bring that 7-6 record into a 3-game stretch no one will expect us to come out of with a win and we beat two teams. No playoffs, sure, but 9-7 — and a glimpse of what is to come with the first three games with Leon and Jenks, and the last 6 games, finishing the season with some steam.

But more than all that, I feel ya on Schotty. He went from feeling dissed that he wasn;t allowed to leave as a HC to possibly being out of a job in 2010. Deservedly so.

  34. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    jorge

I swear to god I was thinking the same thing about bringing in Jeff Garcia.

I went to training camp in cortland for the entire camp this pre season and Sanchez outplayed KC. If nothing else he was the best QB on the team as it was presently constructed.

With that being said though the only problem I have with Tanny is not bringing in veteran who had played at a high level once to help Chez along.

But like you said, Brian Schottenhiemer deserves some of the heat too. He did not put this kid in the best situation to be successful. Having a rookie QB drop back and chuck it 30 times a game is INSANE. We have to get this guy away from Sanchez. When you have the kid throw it that many times you are not teaching him to be careful with the football. You are leaving the door open for more turnovers and getting him killed. He was never given any parameters because Schotty is obsessed with throwing on 2nd n 9 or 3rd and 2.

Hopefully Rex will get in this kids head and have Schotty hand the ball off the TJ instead of hanging the kid out there when the odds are he is going to fail

  35. avatar subwayfare says:

Ferguson? Doesn’t fit the criticism at all. Also, he’s from New York.

  36. avatar jay says:

Brendan! our 5 foot 2 QB is a bum unlike the others you named come on the kid is scared out there! pick after pick good god get with it man.

  37. avatar Shamik says:

Please, this team is not sniffing another win until we get another QB in the game. Best thing to do is to let him ride the pine and work out the kinks in practice. Put him in for a series or two if the outcome of the game is in hand.

As for our defense – it really is over-rated. Jenks gets hurt and the whole thing falls apart. The trick is DEPTH. You can’t build a defensive scheme around such a rare commodity like Jenkins. They also clearly lack fundamentals on both sides of the ball. Next year, make sure to draft a capable CB that can match up with Welker and complement Revis, and then a DE that can put pressure on the opposing QB.

  38. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    @Jorge,

I love your post man; agree with every word. Hopefully, Kerry will get his house in order or get out. Needless, to say, he the last Jets I want to hear from on SNY.

    @Eddie DiGio,

I agree. Rex gave Schottenhiemer complete autonomy and trusted the would be, could be Head Coach to execute a good game plan around a young rookie with big paws. Instead, he’s treating Sanchez like he’s Ol’ Man Warner or the poor man’s version – Garcia, chucking the rock 30+ a game.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah… I get it. Deep in the fourth and down by too many, ya gotta throw the ball. But, how ’bout the play calling in Buffalo when the kid was unravelling at the seems?

Just hit Leon Washington in open space… just like ya did in preseason Baltimore game. Anyways, I’m glad Rex will be getting more involved.

  39. avatar hangar says:

    shamik
    I’ll assume you never coached…

  40. avatar spindoctor says:

I read some of the comments on this blog and have to shake my head—some people seem to say outrageous things to see what comments others will make—the jets can’t sniff a win unless they change the QB(as if Sanchez didn’t put the Jets in position to win before Jacksonville went down the field at the end of the game)—the Jets defense fell apart when Jenkins was injured… really?I must be watching different games. —they have Carolina, Tampa, and Buffalo on the horizon. ALL very winable games, even for the Jets. If someone would have said that the 3 and 0 Jets would lose 6 of 7, no one on this site would have believed him. Maybe they’ll be equally unbelievable and turn this season back around.

  41. avatar Shamik says:

Hanger, no I have not. What’s your point? Neither has most of the people on this site.

  43. avatar Shamik says:

Look, all I’m saying is that we have a team that is built to win now. Why waste it by playing a QB who clearly is in over his head. He’s single-handedly cost the team 3 wins this season. His turnovers put additional pressure on a defense that doesnt seem to pressure the QB or tackle/cover well, accounting for their performance in other games. Why not bench the guy to let him clear his head and work on his mechanics and reads? Fans pay good, hard-earned money to see a winning team on the field, not to see a fledgling find his way in the world by literally throwing away a game. It really isnt fair to fans or to his fellow players, really.

  44. avatar L7WIENIE says:

    Good Evening All,

    Kerry Rhodes Benching: Excellent!!!!!!!!

Kerry is a great athlete but has lost that it factor because he has turned into a d-bag…The good thing is that this benching will hopefully be a kick in the a$$ and with bring him back to earth…

As for Sanchez…any jet fan that is ready to give up on him is a little P…..u$$y. This kid is damn good and sure he has pretty much lost the season for us…but you ahve to take the good with the bad…Mark will bring us a championship one day…just support him.

REX…he is the man…sure he may have f’ed up royally in a bunch of games this season..but he is learning too and all great coaches have to start someplace and i am so glad he is here and hope he will stay for the next 10 years.

    LETS GO JETS!

…Lets hope Eric Smith breaks some faces like he did to Anquan Boldin last year!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. avatar L7WIENIE says:

On a side note…KERRY is not really a d-bag…I met him on the sideline one day and he was a gentleman…he seems like a really good guy but he just needs to

    GET JACKED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Jay
Your standards are way to high for rookie QBs. You talk about bums. Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw, Peyton Manning all are HOF QBs who struggled MIGHTLY their rookie seasons. Bradshaw actually took 4 years before he was the player everyone remembered. What is happening with Sanchez is what happens with rookie NFL QBs when they are given too much responsibility. He should be throwing the ball 18-25 times a game at the most!!!! Even if he is never great, you will see an improvment next year. The game slows down the more live action you get in.

    Deano
Glad your back in good spirits brotha!!! Last time you were almost at your wits end!!!!!

Hey man, the kid has ability. He has thrown some dimes out there this season, and also some putrid decisions and throws. But the reason I dont jump off a bridge is because Ive seen guys who are now considered great do the same stuff as a rookie. My whole family are GMen fans and I saw the same kind of stuff with Eli and before you knew it, the kid was leading them to a SB win. Plus Sanchez has already thrown the ball as much as Ryan and Flacco did ALL LAST YEAR, Sanchez still has 6 games left!!!

Next year hopefully he’ll be to the point where he doesnt lose games for us anymore. It may take a few years before he throws for 3500 yds with 25tds but its to be expected. These next six Rex will be up his butt, teaching him how he wants his QB to play. I think that with some time, some trial and error, these two guys can make this team a consistent playoff contender in the future

  47. avatar Kyle says:

We will find out if Rhodes is a man by how he responds to this.

  48. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    Eddie DiGio,

I was down, but now I’m back… Kerry Rhodes will be too. We all need a little time out and some scotchy scotch to chill our sometime – lol!

Under the circumstances, I’m really proud of how Rex is shaking things up. He’s owned up to all his short comings, demonstrated he’s emotionally wounded in any loss, reached out to others for advice and is making astute and neccessary adjustments.

    L7WIENIE,

    Right on the money!

  49. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Shamik

I understand about the fans paying good money to watch games but this is the way it is sometimes. If you want a franchise QB in the NFL, its almost impossible to obtain one via Free Agency or a trade. You have to draft one and go through the growing pains. Its just the way its done.

I agree that most of the players on the Jets are sort of a win now team but how far could they REALLY go? This defense is good but we’ve seen that it is not championship caliber yet. They still need to tweak it a lil bit to get from above average to elite. Really unless Brady or Peyton were our QB we werent winning the SB. In reality, whats the use of renting out another QB to get knocked out in the first or second rd? What, you have Sanchez sit on the bench until year 3 and you just stick him in and he leads the team to the SB? It doesnt happen like that.

You dont have to have coached to have an opinion but I will tell you one thing Ive observed from doing it, you have to fail, sometimes monumentally, or overcome some sort of adversity to ever achieve greatness. The bumps and bruises from the journey are the step necessary to obtain your goal.

You seem like a pretty smart guy, and your always talking about studying for college right? Because you dont absorb all the info from your MacroEconomics class right after the lecture does that make you stupid? Does it mean you will never learn it? HELL NO BROTHA!!! You excel just the way you talk about, you learn from your mistakes, you hit the books, if you still dont get, you hit the books again.

Its the same thing Rex is trying to instill in the kid. The kid has to keep running out there and find a way to to get it done. The time to bench him has already passed. Rex missed the boat on that one. Now he just has to be there for the kid when he makes the mistakes and teach and reinforce the things that he wants him to do. Coach Parcells said “rookies will kill you in this league”

I know its frustrating but keep the faith man. We arent 0-11 and he looks Ryan Leaf like. We have won four games and in three of the losses, Sanchez was good enough to win on that day, the D just let him down. Its all part of the process.

Keep rooting for the Jets, I can tell all you want is for them to win, just keep having patience because if you want to get to the top of the mountain, you gotta climb it first.

    What?

Jets fan for life. Well, it’s been 40-years. What’s your life expectancy? I’m not Al Davis throwing away 1st round picks, but I’m geting kinda nervous!

  56. avatar johnl says:

LETS GET A YEA OR NAY VOTE TO SEE WHO IS WITH ME ON THE JETS ( OUR TEAM ) STILL HAVING A CHANCE OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS.

  57. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    johnl,

Considering the Jets havn’t been to the Super Bowl for 40-years, 26-years is a long time. The way things are going we need a life expectancy of a vampire.

The next three games (Carolina, Buffalo and Tampa)are winnable, just like the four (Miami, Buffalo, Miami and Jacsonville) out of the last five were.

Look we were a better team with Jenkins when we faced the Patriots the first time against a hesitant Brady and no Welker. That’s not the case any longer. Be real, dude!

And, be happy Rex is kicking Schotty to the curb and benching Rhodes!

Let’s see what the young kids can do and build on it. If you wanna buy tickets to the God damned Supper Bowl, by all means; yet the only green on the field is grass, because Philadephia sucks too!

Get over yourself – seriously. And, turn off you CAPS LOCK off.

You look like a young twitter jacka$$ (David Clowney)!

  58. I don’t like this team at all…they’re mediocre at best. And when you go to their official site and see those God awful tweeter comments I want to puke. How about they win a damn game before Keller asks all the ladies what they would buy on a NYC shopping spree. Barf….

  59. avatar James in TN says:

With Schotty as our OC we win 1 of 3 of the next games. I want to believe , but I have no confidence in Suckenheimer. I don’t blame Sanchez because we have had this offensive problem for a while. We are going to get better, but Schott has got to go.

    Go JETS!!!!

  60. avatar rage says:

Nay. Jets will be lucky to go 6-10

  61. avatar jay says:

Eddie di, i do not care every year its always something ive been a jets fan for 35 years im tired of it.

  62. avatar igs says:

Eric Smith couldn’t cover a bed with a blanket. The Jets just threw this game away.

  63. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

Question, where were all you people screaming for patience when Clemens “struggled” in his first year?

I happen to agree we need to be patient, Mark is the future now and it takes 30 games to find out if he will make it,

I just find is disingenous to scream for patience with this kid when you never gave the same honeymoon period to the last kid, whose stats compare favorably to Sanchez in both college and his initial pro season as a starter, in both cases with a hell of lot less talent surrounding him.

  64. avatar mole57 says:

igs, Eric Smith doesn’t have to cover well. Jake Delhomme is the QB. He could be ten yards away from the play and be in perfect position for an interception.

  65. avatar Kevin says:

Guys come on. Those of you who want to trade Kerry Rhodes should think twice. Yes he has had an awful season but this guy has talent. We can’t give up on him just yet. Those who want him gone I have a question, what are you looking to get in return for Kerry?

  66. avatar Bent says:

Right mole…maybe that’s why Rhodes was benched. He covers too well to ever make an interception because Delhomme is too inaccurate to throw it that close to the receiver. At least if Smith is out of position he stands a chance of coincidentally being in the same place as one of Delhomme’s wayward passes. Maybe they should bench Revis for Drew Coleman on the same basis!

Actually, scratch that – Jake’s been a lot better lately.

  67. avatar jp losman says:

was it rhodes or eric coleman that after they were drafted in the mid rounds, declared them selves to be the best safety in the draft?

i ‘m almost positive it was rhodes after he was drafted in the 4th round.

    what happened to that guy?

this could be a great move by rex if he can convince rhodes that his back is against the wall and he has something to prove, much like not getting picked until the 4th round and yet knowing he was way better than brodney pool or whoever was taken in front of him

I believe it was Andre Maddox, not Rhodes or Coleman.
