Link: The Perils of Traveling on the Road of Fandom
John Cichowski writes an interesting article on an underdiscussed story about fandom, that of fans walking to their cars at unsanctioned off-site parking facilities.
Both the Giants and Jets limit on-site parking to season-ticket holders with prepaid $20 parking passes. No pass? Use the teams’ well-run, well-lit, off-site lots for 3,500 cars on Clay Avenue and Wall Street West in Lyndhurst and on Murray Hill Parkway in East Rutherford. For $20, fans are bused to and from the stadium.
That leaves a 1,500-car deficit that has spurred a lucrative cottage industry. Businesses with spare weekend parking offer park-and-ride service, but not all provide return buses. And many fans prefer walking over busing because it’s faster than getting shuttled back to off-site team lots.
More than anything, we want Jets fans (and Giants fans too, yes ..) to be safe and the come and go to the stadium, but there’s three big impediments that I see.
One, that people aren’t aware of the mass transit options available to them. Two, that there isn’t enough parking available to the the fans and that the pedestrian options are embarrasing, and three that those other options are somehow more attractive, cheaper, comes with a meal, etc.
But why would a state run facility want to give commerce away to local businesses? Personally, not matter the cost, I try to make it as easy as I can on myself when going to the stadium, and walking between (most likely) frustrated fans on Rte. 120 isn’t my idea of fun.

Off topic question ;
What is Rex Ryan doing implementing a “code” for Sanchez? Shouldn’t this be Schottenheimer’s responsibility?
Maybe Ryan should develop a code for Schottenheimer;
1. Don’t take Thomas Jones off the field on 3rd and short situations.
2. Do not throw Hail Mary’s on 1st down.
3. Do not run the wildcat on 3rd down.
4. Run the ball over and over and over again until it stop working.
5. PROTECT YOUR ROOKIE QB WITH AN SIMPLE PLAYBOOK!
New code:
Eliminate 1-5 and just use this:
1) Strip Schottenheimer of playcalling duties and let him walk at the end of the year.
2) Hire Chuck Weis
make that three votes on shottenheimer getting a boot. if not him then i want the GMs head.
Why didn’t Ryan do these things after the Buffalo game?? This guy is seeming more unprofessional by the day.
By the way, I’ve been reading this blog for 2 years now without a comment. I’m so fed up with all the bull. Ryan gave me hope, and got me all pumped up for the season. Now I read that he was only trying to pump up the locker room? What a crack pot!!
Keith: If you are in favor of a head coach who wants to pump up the fans instead of the team, I suggest you go back to not posting.
I want to know how a coach can come in and not choose his own staff. I love What Tanny has done so far but he’s running the jets like the automotive industry has been run.
Why was Schotty kept and givin an extension?
Let your Head coach feel like he’s GM and when he crosses the line you let him know where he stands.
On topic – I always park for free at the games and walk to the stadium. About a half hour walk each way. i like walking – exercise is good for you. Disclaimer – I don’t care about tailgating – I go to watch the game, not to drink. So I know most people want the convenience, but I’d rather park free and walk.
i know i’m late on this.. but…
