Brian Schottenheimer spoke to the press this week and talked about his new oversight of Rex Ryan on the work he’s been doing so far this season.
“I think, early on, it stung me a little bit,” Schottenheimer said on Friday after practice at the Jets headquarters in Florham Park. “We have a goal everywhere I’ve ever been: You wanted to keep your head coach out of your meetings. That’s the goal.
“If you keep the head coach out of your meetings, then you’re doing a good job. Obviously, he needed to get involved.”
At least he’s honest with himself about the fact that he needed some oversight. Ryan painted some broad strokes for Schotty last spring, but has tried to keep out of his hair as much as possible. Sanchez is of course learning, but when he gets into those ruts of throwing interception after interception, it’s very troubling and that coupled with some curious playcalling must have gotten Ryan more involved.

I think “Shotty” may be in trouble unless things improve especially with the play calling. Ryan is focused on success and I think understands that he can’t afford 2 bad seasons with the Jets. If things are not completly where they need to be I can see “Shotty” getting fired! What do you guys think?

fire schotty now. simple yet profound
-
Charlie, these next 6 weeks will certainly be make or break for him..
-
As will Charlie Weis’s availability. He’s a perfect, um, fit.
-
How he kept his job after last year is beyond me.
This guy needs to stop trying to get fancy and out smarthimself all the time and stick to the basics.
Bottom line, he’s been here for 3-4 years.
No improvement no results… No next season.
Bye bye schott-head. -
Meet the new boss…same as the old boss.
Fire Schott, start talking to Weiss.
-
Yea This Really seems like a no brainer we underachieve on Offense every year since he came here.
-
Everyone who is ripping Rex for not sitting in on these meetings from day 1, notice he says everywhere he’s been the goal was to keep the head coach out of meetings. This is his first time failing, so that would imply the almighty game manager Eric Mangini wasn’t sittign in on meetings. Right?
-
Rex tried to treat B Schott how he was treated by new Harbaugh last year in Baltimore. You run your unit and unless theres problems your good.
Well there are problems and now Rex is in new territory. B Schott is watching his “head coaching” career vanish before his eyes and he knows it. He will asked to be let go after the season if not fired.
I want zero part of Charlie Weiss plus there is no way that Patriot/Tom Brady loving ass is coming here. He doesnt need the money (since ND owes his $$) and he want pull a Mangini on Belichick. He is probably going to the Pats. Hire within….. Bill Cal or Matt Cav
-
I am glad Ryan is getting involved in this mess. I can’t help but wonder if a defensive minded coach can help much. But hey, at this point it cant really get alot worse.
I really hope we beat the Bills though. We have alot of Buffalo fans up here.
-
levi,
Defensive coaches can be very valuable in regards to offensive meetings. Rex may be better suited than almost anyone to show the offense how he would go about stopping their gameplan. He can give them insight on what the defense would key on, and how they would try to stop the offense. He can definitely help in these meetings even if he has zero offensive expertise.
-
The point of rex being in the meeting is the same as benching Kerry Rhodes….
B Schott and Kerry have been put on notice. Rex will not add that much to the offensive meetings and Eric Smith will not “improve” the defense……the message is clear to both though…..do what is expected or get out
-
DeeVee,
I agree with you. How they kept Schottenheimer on, when they fired the Mangini regime was moronic. Schottenheimer was one of the key problems, as he has been this season.
Schottenheimer must really be in denial, if he thinks he doesn’t need some help. If I was Rex, I would have handed the Offense over to Bill Callahan, a long time ago. James from TN has the right idea — send him packing.
As for Matt Cavanaugh, he has been a coach for twelve years yet, he can’t get Sanchez to throw the ball away, when he is under pressure. He has not helped with Sanchez’ accuracy or the fact that Sanchez continually forces the ball into coverage. Sanchez doesn’t use enough pump fakes, play-action fakes, and he looks right at the receiver he is throwing to. Therefore, Cavanaugh can join Schottenheimer on his way out the door. Great job, Matt.
-
Looks to me that the problems have been more with the lack of QB development(indictment of Cavanaugh) and less of a problem with play calling(Schottenheimer) — totally agree with AKA Drew — I want no part of Charlie Weis…I want no part of anyone with any prior or current affiliation with Bellicheat.
-
If you continue with that interview Schott also tries to deflect blame from himself to Sanchez, I found it very weasel like, where is leberfeld on that?
They should just fire Schott now, why continue this charade one weel longer?
Not like they are lacking for an in house option, Callahan is in place, may as well begin the transition.
Why not? It tells me Mr. T has not yet given up on Schottenheimer.
-
I don’t think they want to rock the boat too much as long as there is a mathematical chance at the playoffs—if they lose to Carolina and the offense struggles, maybe they’ll pull the trigger on Schottenheimer. Otherwise, it won’t come until after the season.
-
I imagine Ryan’s foray into the offensive meetings is as much to keep his defense’s morale up as anything. If they feel he is at least trying to protect their effort by limiting offensive mistakes he’s got a better chance of holding the D to the standards he’s looking for.
-
HEY GUYS, I want to see what everyone thinks about this one! I was listening to the Fan 660 on Wednesday and Mike Francesa commented that there were “some rumblings” that Woody might make a run for Bill Cowher at the end of the season. I do not agree with this move at this time because I think the morale of the players and organization will be “shook-up” and might do more harm than good. The time to do that was before hiring Rex. I like Rex and think he will do well as our head coach bit the OC is “on notice”!! What do you guys think? Thanks, Charles
-
Thanks Bent,
Do you think the Jets will make another BIG move and sign a “BIG TIME” player? I think they need more depth on the “D” line and at CB. What do you think? What will the Jets do now draft a Big player or sign a Big free agent. Thanks, Charles
-
Tannenbaum would be crazy, to get rid of Rex. He hired a head coach with no head coaching experience. Even an experienced coach would take more than one year, to get his team together. I like Rex. It took him almost no time at all, to get his defense going, as promised. It is the offense that has caused us problems, all season. I blame that on Schottenheimer, as I have for the past three seasons. As soon as Tanny gets rid of Schottenheimer, Rex will look that much better.
-
First thing the JETS need to do is fire Shotty and Cavanaugh, promote Callahan than see if the can get Pennington in as a QB coach. I sure he will be available. His career is over and he would make a good QB/offensive asst coach.
-
Tannenbaum needs to get over his fear of firing Schotty and just do it so the Jets can move on.
-
Rememeber…one of Rex’s reason for not bringing in a vet QB in amp was he loved Matt Cavanaugh to help Sanchez.
I am not saying he is doing a good job but this os one of Rex’s hand picked guys.
-
Yeah. let’s fire Schotty so now we give Sanchez an excuse when he sucks again next year – “hey it is a whole new system.”
The organization traded up to get Clemens in 2006. He sat and watched Chad run an offense that produced 10 wins (I am sure none of that was to Schotty’s credit; but the 6 losses were). In 2007 Clemens cut his teeth behind the worst OL in football.
2008, Schotty had to dumb down the offense for Favre. 2009 they throw a green rookie at him.
I am not saying Schotty is the best thing since sliced bread, but it would be absolutely ridiculous to can him.
-
My point is, we could have Clemens doing exactly what Sanchez is doing and we could have kept our top 2 picks AND not locked salary cap $ through 2013.
And if Clemens was not the answer, QB would be addressed in the 2010 draft.

I agree that Schotty gets a little too much blame but there are games that he just confuses me with his play calling. Plus the guy is pining to be a head coach and is not happy staying an OC which I have always felt has affected his play calling.
As to the QB. 2 head coaches and B Schott have seen what KC can do and he still hasnt won the job. The point of letting Sanchez play (besides the fact that he clearly beat KC out) is he will be a much better player in 2010 than if you drafted another guy next year
The hard knocks he takes this year will “hopefully” translate into success next year.
-
Drew – If it does not, the team is set back years.
My biggest criticism of Schotty is the runs on 2nd and 10 after an incomplete on a 1st down pass – it fools nobody and is too predictable.
-
Typical classly Pats fan….. I would love to drop the hammer on this clown.
-
Since Bent deleted the last trollers post …..my post at 4:06 makes no sense……lol
-
WOW…… totally uncalled for. LMAO!!
You suck Bent but well played
-
Weis is more of a Parcells guy than a Belichick guy.
-
We don’t need to fire anyone. Bring back Joe Willie to undo the curse that the Jets got for selling our soul to the Devil, to win the Super Bowl. Ever notice the srange losses we’ve had over the years.Case in point the Heidi game, etc. LOL
-
Why is it always a curse when a team loses for an extended period of time, and when they finally win the curse was somehow broken. Wouldn’t it be more strange if every team wins one title in the next 32 years than if a handful don’t win any?
Cursed? No. [crappy] luck and overall management? Yes.

In looking at the development of young qbs around the league, I have to seriously question whether Schoty is the right choice for Mark Sanchez. I know all of the talk is about Weis, and I think he would be a great choice. But it really has to focus on a broader solution; in other words, in case Weis has other plans, do we have a Plan B?
In general, it appears that young qbs that develop really need an experienced mentor to guide them. Look at Flacco (Cam Cameron) or even Henne (who is playing well with Dan Henning as his coordinator). Both Mannings had experienced mentors to bring them along. And that is what is needed for Sanchez to succeed.
Now Weis would be a great choice. Personally speaking, I would write him a blank check. But if we hire him, there needs to be a succession plan, because he will be back to a HC position within 2 or 3 years. Look at the Pats. They are still running the same offense that Weis built. They just kept grooming new coordinators. The bottom line is that the Jets need to find a hot veteran coordinator, who can become mentor, guidance counselor, guide, and teacher to Sanchez. And then it will work.
-
i think Rex should announce Ainge as the starter for the Carolina game, give the kid a shot and see what he can do!
-
I am all for signing Weis as OC, if he wants to coach. I think after all the press conferences as ND’s HC, he won’t be able to go back to BB’s staff and no longer talk to the press. But, the bigger issue is that Schott has to go.
My pet peeves are:
1) No running in the red zone
2) No screen game
3) No passes to the RBs or FBs
4) Too many gadget plays
5) Too many pass plays where the receivers are bunched
6) Too many empty backfields
7) Too few play action passes
8) Too much running left
9) Stops running a play that works over and over to force the defense to stop itGenerally, I wish Schotty’s offense was less complex and I think he abandons the run too early. I also thinks there is a structural flaw in his offense that causes too many INTs. Sure, he’s working with his 4th QB, but other teams have had back up or young QBs and gotten more out of them. Plus, few teams have as good an OL and running game as the Jets. Yet, the Jets’ offense has been the weak link on this team since Schott’s been hired. I just think the Jets’ offense should be better and it isn’t.

if weiss is more of a parcells guy………………lets hope the dolphins are happy with dan henning

Bye Bye Schottenheimer!!!!

In general Jones just is not very good. Bent is right about those 2nd down splits. If you take his biggest runs out of the equation his 2nd down numbers drop to 2.3 YPC. Last year he was 2.8 YPC in the same spots.
If you want to compare to last year, there is really only one area where he falls way short. He is way down in attempts of less than 2 yards from last season (he is on pace for 13, and last year he had 22) and completely ineffective in that role this year. He has 8 yards on 8 carries with a long of 11, so he effectively gains nothing. Last year he averaged 5.1 in that spot. His 3-7 totals are nearly identical. He gets caught in a ton more 2nd and long 8-10 yards spots this year than last. The stats are identical though, but because they run him more his overall numbers look lower. The other area where he is way off is the 2nd and 11+. The Jets have given up using him in that situation.
I think the Jets problems really come on 1st down. They dont pass nearly as much as last season (nor should they with Sanchez) and its leaving them in a ton of 2nd and 8+ situations where they are forced to turn to Jones again and in general Jones is no good. I dont care much for Schottenheimer but he has been saddled with a running back that puts up big season numbers because he occasionally breaks a big run and is one of the few 1 back system players remaining, but is not very good. Its not a Sanchez problem or a Schotty problem its a personnel problem in that regard. Where Schottenheimer is guilty is that when Jones is going well (such as the Bills game this year or that Eagles game in 2007) he still loses faith and stops using him in crucial spots.
-
Jason, how many of those second and two’s were goal line when he was stuffed?
He is in a lot more 2 and long spots because Leon is hurt and TJ used to be on the sidelines in those situations.
Also, the lack of a blocking TE hurts.
Jones is a proven very solid running back, to claim he is “not very good” is absurd and can not go unanswered, no matter what your stats say.
-
WOJF, Jones only has 3 goaline carries on 2nd down, so his stats are not skewed by that. Im not sure about the Leon effect. Last year Leon was hardly used on 2nd downs. He only had 25 2nd down carries last year, only 10 of which were on downs where it was 2nd and 8 or longer. He was totally ineffective in that role. This year he was being used more, but Jones was the horse last season as well.
He is on pace for the same amount of 2nd down carries this year, its just the splits are different because the Jets didnt get as many of these 2nd and longs. Jones YPC in the last 5 years on 2nd and 8-10 yards, once you take out the 1 long run from the stats, are 3.5, 3.4, 3.6, 3.2, and 2.8.

“We have a goal everywhere I’ve ever been: You wanted to keep your head coach out of your meetings.”
Everywhere he has ever been? Until he came to the Jets, that head coach was always his daddy.
