Waive Goodbye to Justin

by Weeks on November 28th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

After only suiting up for one game with the Jets, Justin Miller has since been released by the team who obviously feel very comfortable with Lowery and Cotchery as return men.

New York Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum announced today that the Jets have waived cornerback/kick returner Justin Miller.

As Smith continues to write he mentions that Mike Westhoff thought Miller would see some action Sunday but obviously the FO wanted to go in a different direction and subsequently released Miller who has been inconsistent these past few years but didn’t have much of a chance to redeem himself with his former team.

According to Cimini Miller was cut after missing a team meeting- looks like Rex is becoming more like Mangini every day haha. But seriously this was likely the last straw for him since he looked slow in his first game and then missed the meeting despite knowing this would be his chance to play

  2. avatar BigKatFan says:

Who is to take his roster spot?

  3. avatar Bent says:

Lowery is hurt, so Brad Smith will apparently return kicks.

The roster spot will not be filled until next week.

  4. avatar Jets = Misery says:

    Goodbye Miller.

  5. avatar BigKatFan says:

thanks, Bent. I’m sure Brad will do a fantastic job returning kicks. And maybe catching passes, too.

Good job by Rex on this one. He is putting the hammer down on his players who seem to be taking advantage of him being a players coach.

New number same idiot Justin Miller. After his first KO return against Miami I and the Jets knew it was a mistake bringing this guy back.

Remember when people thought he should see time at CB……lol

    Good riddance

  8. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Sad part about our season is one area I thought we would dominate is special teams. Even before the Leon injury we have taken a huge step back in that department.

Our KO and PR has beome a joke and who can be happy with our only reliable WR returning punts now?

  9. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

Not playing Miller cost the JETS Lowery and Strickland for this game and maybe longer. Real smart coaching decisions.
    SAME OLD JETS!

  10. avatar AKA...Drew says:

How did it cost them Strickland exactly?

  11. avatar Dean Barbella says:

I’ve gotta agree with The Ed(itor). Why are we risking Lowery and Cotchery when we have a guy like Miller?

I know he looks a lil’ shakey and never realized his potential as a cornerback, but he’s not too far removed from an All Pro Kick Returner season.

With the playoffs out of reach, I’d consider these remaining games as good time to allow him to return to form.

  12. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Or since we dont have a relaible KR we see what Lowery and or another guy has to add to our special teams.

I hate that Cotchery is back there but we just need someone to catch the ball until Leonhard heals up.

This has now been 2 years that Miller has not bounced bak from his injury plus if the guy is missing meetings and he is the 53 man on the roster…what does that tell you?

  13. avatar Dean Barbella says:

Hmmm. I didn’t know about the injury. I just thought Oakland out bid Jets when the kid’s rookie contract expired.

Also, he was still running back kicks for TD returns in Oakland. So, when was the injury?

… Probably, why Oakland cut him shortly after resigning him.

  14. avatar Ryan says:

Allen Rossum just got cut the other day, i know hes not as good as he used to be, but hes still solid as they come

  15. avatar jp losman says:

miller just looked slow hitting the holes on all of his KO returns.

why not give woodhead a shot

  16. avatar Jets-fan-4-Life says:

    Good riddance Miller sucked!!
He sucked a few years ago, and I wanted him cut! And I got it!
I did not want him back and now the rest of the team remembers why he was cut…. He still sucked!!

  17. avatar Jeff says:

I wonder how much money he made in the time he was here

  18. avatar Bent says:

Right, Drew, saying it cost them Strickland is like saying not playing Woodhead and Pitoitua cost them Leon and Jenkins.

And Miller should never, ever be trusted to catch an NFL punt so the fact they’re risking Cotchery has nothing to do with him either.

  19. avatar levi says:

As someone above said why not Woodhead? Seems like he would be perfect for it. I dont like seeing Cotch or our already very thin cbs in there. Especially Cotch he always fights for extra yards, that can very well get him hurt in the return game.

It does seem like Rex is laying down the law lately. Could it be Rex has been put on notice? You know the saying **** rolls down hill.

  20. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

This is not an example of Rex laying down the law, it is basic management. You give a player with a bad rep another lease on life and he doesnt show up, you cut him. Same with Carroll.

The ridiculous part was Mr. T bringing this guy back to begin with, a bad decision which of course slides right off Teflon T.

Instead of doing his homework and finding a kick returner that was ready to step in and who could perhaps double in coverage, he made the easy phone call to Miller.

He obviously did not check him out physically, thereby indirectly causing Lowery to get hurt performing what should have been Millers job.

  21. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

Hopefully it does not also result in Cotchery getting hurt, my post should have included a reference to seeking someone that could return punts too.

Why are we in week two of this Cotch experiment? There is no one in the entire country that could have been signed this week to step in and return punts?

    Very simple transaction;

Monday waiver wire, Jets sign Joe SoNso, KR/PR waive Miller. End of problem.

I’ll probably repeat myself on the opening thread for today’s game, but as much as I don’t like Schottenheimer and have been calling for his hed in 2010, or now, I also have been thinking about this in a different way this morning.

What we all dislike about Schottenheimer is not his ability, or his smarts. Most of us agree that he tries to get too cute, tries to outsmart himself, tries to do too much with too little. Until he came to the Jets a few years ago, his previous two jobs were under his dad. Then on Mangini’s staff, he was highly touted, offered the Miami HC job, and thought to be on his way to a HC job next year.

Point is, maybe this is his wakeup call. He is a young kid with a lot of ability to call a good gameplan — so maybe this is what his career needed and — like anyone else — can learn and grow from this.

Dare I say, a good six games of gameplanning and calling and I might even ok his return. Anyone with me or am I alone on the island.

  23. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Guess I didn’t fully explain the point that he is a bit cocky under his dad and highly touted — the wakeup call being his slight ‘demotion’

  24. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

I woke up this morning feeling all optimistic after a nice Holiday and was planning to write a nice optimistic post about this being they day the worms turns and Sanchez and Ryan make the necessary adjustments toward salvaging the season.

But once I start reading this stuff the mismanagement crap rears its ugly head and I revert to pessimism.

Despite the kick return thing, I am very much looking forward to what is a crucial game today.

My pre season prediction was six wins after a 1-4 start, with the QB and HC making enough strides by the end of the season to give us confidence in the future. While the beginning of the season screwed up perspective, the overall theme still has a real chance to occur.

Both Rex and Sanchez have faced true adversity the last few weeks, now is the time to prove they can do their jobs at this level.

The HC is taking public steps to change the perception he is a loud pushover. I believe it will have the desired effect in creating a gameplan focused on game management. A true test to see if his presence makes a difference.

If the QB does not figure things out this week it could be a big red flag. The gameplan has undoubtedly been simplified for him with an emphasis on protecting the ball, if he goes out there today and continues to make mistakes he may just not have the “IT” that many claimed he has.

This is a very ordinary defense, no reason they should not manage a few long scoring drives, FG’s would be fine. I just want to see them manage to get into a rhythm while making sustained drives down the field, baby steps. No excuses.

On defense they will give up yardage on the ground vs a good committed running team, but should be able to mostly keep them out of the end zone. Carolina’s offense should be dominated by a Ryan defense, I will settle for containing it.

No excuses, win the game, pretty or ugly does not matter. The next two games are very winnable, so a win today could very well mean a momentum shift toward 7-6 and semi-meaningful games in December.

An ugly loss and the ship might just be sinking.

While this is a not a traditional big game with playoff implications, it is a HUGE game for the future direction of this franchise.

  25. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

greg, good points, I do believe he is a decent coordinator with a smart veteran QB like Chad and may succeed elsewhere.

But I would be concerned that it took Rex sitting in on his meeting to get it, I mean it has been pretty obvious for quite some time that things needed to be simplified and he failed to either recognize it or stubbornly refused. In any case, I would not trust the development of this QB to him for another season.

  26. avatar M. Golden says:

Hmmm, things don’t seem well in The Kingdom of the Jets. Rhodes is riding the pine, Miller and Carroll are unemployed and The Sanchise is color blind. To make matters worse Rex has developed a “secret code” for Sanchez, no word if it requires a Bullwinkle Secret Decoder Ring or not and he’s going to become more involved in the offense, I understand he’s planning to start one of his many chins at left guard. I have a feeling there will be a lot of errant balls in the air and another “L” in the column today, enjoy your last six games.

  27. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

Steve smith has suddenly appeared on the injury reports as “questionable” per Cimini, will be limited if he plays at all.

    No excuses.

  28. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

My wife just came back from walking the dog and thought she saw Justin Miller sleeping on subway grating outside some nightclub.

If it wasnt him, it will be soon.

  29. avatar James in TN says:

Why don’t we keep players like Cotchery and Revis in their normal positions. Lets make Lito Shepard our returner, heck he is going to get hurt anyway whether it be returning kicks or opening mail or pouring a glass of orange juice. Its all the same. He is a big play guy with the ball, no?

I truly believe Woodhead with more reps as the returner would develop nicely and it could be a doorway to playing more at RB as a 3rd option while Leon is out.

  30. avatar AKA Jack says:

Hate to say I told you so but I told you so.

    Miller is all used up.
