Jets – Panthers Matchups

by Bassett on November 29th, 2009 at 11:45 am

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we could see happening today between the Jets and the Panthers.

When the Jets Run the Ball — Grind em out.  This defensive line isn’t great against the run right now, Damione Lewis and Julius Pepeprs both have been banged up, but the linebackers are excellent led by Jon Beason.  Na’il Diggs might be sidelined today, and that would help the Jets.  When it gets down to it, the Jets can run the ball on this team, and might break a few long ones, but for the most part, what with Sanchez’s recent struggles the Jets should run the ball and stick with running the ball, because even though it won’t be sexy, they’ll string enough first downs together to score some, if they can stick with the run. When the Jets Pass the Ball –  This secondary has been quietly good so far this season.  The Jets receivers will be well covered, and this should be a good test for Sanchez.  He need to find the open man or THROW IT AWAY.  Although the receivers might struggle getting open, Dustin Keller has the ability to beat this linebacking and safety unit.  This could be a very big game for him.

When the Panthers Run the Ball –Just like the Jets, this should be the focus of the offense for the Panthers.  The Jets struggled last week against the Patriots in this respect, and the Panthers should do much of the same.  Run the ball up the gut, and see if the Jets can stop Mr. Williams.

When the Panthers Pass the Ball — This is where the Jets need to cash in.  Delhomme started roughly this season, but has evened out throwing just one pick in the last three weeks.  Still if the Jets can pressure the Panthers enough, the secondary could use a boost after it’s bashing this past week.  Revis should cover Smith most of the day, but look to see how the team matches against Muhammed today.
