Audible: Any Requests?

by Bent on November 30th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

Due to (yet more) technical issues, I did not get to see yesterday’s game live, but will be watching it tomorrow morning instead.

If you guys would like me to focus on anything in particular (for example a particular player or substition/formation details), I will do some detailed play-by-play analysis. I will also do this for Thursday night’s game, so get your requests for that one in early too…

I can’t promise I’ll be able to focus on everything you ask for, but I’ll focus on the most common/interesting requests.

How badly under thrown was the Delhomme throw to Revis?

  2. avatar ronnie says:

    How great Eric Smith played

  3. avatar Sean says:

Don’t be surprised if fat charlie is our new Offensice Coordinator next year….thoughts

  4. avatar mbaumann says:

could you talk a little bit about danny woodhead, he was doing some things.

  5. avatar R in CT says:

The Flight Crew coverall outfits — they seemed to cover all! Who wants that?

Oh, and D’Brick’s underrated game on Peppers would be nice.

  6. avatar brian311 says:

westerman had an incredible hit on special teams (i believe a punt return or kickoff coverage). we need more players with that type of mentality on the field

  7. avatar David Harris Fan says:

    Vernon Gholston cough cough

No in all seriousness, Eric Smith was all over the field.

  8. Since I will be watching the game tomorrow since I didnt see it either I would love to know what to “look” for.

I can assume the following just from reading:

    Revis is god
    Our defense played well
Sanchez played like a 2008 version on Joe Flacco
S Greene fumbled again … ugh!
    Rhodes got 2

    Looking for…

    Did Gholsten play
I read that Woodhead got involved
    KO/PR specials
Timeouts used in the 2nd half
Did we run the ball or throw the ball on 3 and 6ish? Did we totally scale back the play book?
Did we go for any 4th downs?
Did we bring heat on Delhomme or did a DL actually beat an OL for pressure?

  9. avatar spindoctor says:

the conservative play of sanchez— clearly was throwing a bit tentatively all game in an attempt to avoid the INT—this was the main difference yesterday(besides the Rhodes benching)

  10. avatar spindoctor says:

    AKA
you’re assumptions are all correct—Gholsten played sparingly and did nothing—woodhead contributed a big third down wheel route that was a GREAT CALL BY THE OC(read that all schottenheimer bashers!!)— had a bad timeout on defense for ?reason—mixed up play calling on third and middle range(more runs than passes I think) — don’t recall any 4th down gambles — frequently brought 4 and occasionally 5 but not many jailbreak blitzes

  11. avatar cmonleon says:

i would like to read you compare rhodes and smith i didnt see much of rhodes on any other plays besides the pics. i think if smith was out there he prly would have had those easy pics too. if rhodes starts again do you think he deserves it, or is smith getting shafted?

  12. avatar SackDance99 says:

Drew Coleman’s defense. Many fans think that’s an oxymoron, but his play was stellar yesterday.

  13. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Coleman had the hit of the game, following the play where Steve Smith beat Revis on a key 10 yard TD but bobbled the ball (an under-reported factor in how great Revis played — but then, the best players get lucky too), Drew Coleman had the hit of the game. He buried Rosario in what could have been a TD or perhaps a short 4th down attempt. Even if they still were kicking a FG, it was a monster hit.

  14. avatar spentmiles says:

Sanchez’s inability to lead his receivers and hit them in stride…

And the obnoxious commentary by the announcers: “They are ruining Sanchez! If he doesn’t get to air it out, then he’ll never learn to win the big games!”

At this point, the kid is an interception waiting to happen. He needs to learn to win the small games before the big! Baby steps!

  15. avatar brian311 says:

woodhead’s play was huge. wonder what all the naysayers throught about that.

im not saying that the guy can line up in a power i formation and run though the tackles, but it is obvious he is a huge mismatch on an LB coming out of the backfield. credit schotty for drawing that play up

  16. avatar Matt says:

Whether you think the offensive line is overrated. Namely, while they may be great run blockers, do they protect the QB as well as people say they do?

  17. avatar f-gunzx23 says:

In the beginning, what went wrong when the jets d had panthers on 3 & long and still gave up first downs in the first drive

  18. avatar greg sec 130 says:

And by the way, Drew Coleman was a 6th rounder by Tannenbaum, Eric Smith was a third rounder in the same draft, and Leon and Brad Smith 4th rounders that draft.

Next year they have to compile their picks and go back to drafting for depth, it seems he is capable when he has the late picks and doesn’t trade up (which has worked well so far too)

  19. avatar Igs says:

I think you should keep a good eye on how the defensive front and middle is playing. At this point I think that’s the biggest question mark.

  20. avatar greg sec 130 says:

I agree with Matt — the pocket collapsed very early too often on passing downs. Was that the line collapsing or Sanchez’s inability to recognize and duck out of trouble early.

  21. avatar EddieC says:

sanchez too cautious to throw the ball (although we asked for that)

bart scott- saw lack of effective play- tackling and in coverage (maybe i noticed only when he messed up)

  22. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

China Sucks? It’s a gigantic massage parlor. It’s beautiful.

  23. avatar MM says:

Anyone rewatching the game should take a look at wallace wright. Every punt he was within 5 feet of the receiver when he caught the ball. I haven’t looked at the stats, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets were one of the best teams against punt return yardage because of their coverage.

  24. avatar Bent says:

Thanks for the suggestions so far. There are so many good ones, it’s going to be very hard to decide what to do.

A few comments on the suggestions so far:

MM – Didn’t Wright miss a bad tackle leading to a long PR? I do like his play overall though.

“bart scott- saw lack of effective play- tackling and in coverage (maybe i noticed only when he messed up)”

This could be an interesting one to do, especially since another commenter yesterday said that Scott was outstanding and in on every play!

D’Brick on Peppers is a good one, although maybe I should look at the offensive line as a whole.

Keep the ideas coming…maybe I will do some this week and save some for the Bills game.

  25. Crystal Gunns…..

    Obviously excluding the massages.

There is nothing like a 15 hours flight, 13 hour time change, being exhausted and hating the food but….. finishing the night with a $11masssge “full body version ;)” is pretty fanatstic.

  26. avatar sanchise69 says:

could you focus on if we only used rhodes in dime packages and if he was in the right place at the right time or if he read the play and made it happen..revis first pick was just good awareness and it seems like rhodes 2 INTs were just him making a play on bad passes from a bad qb that was under pressure..i would like to know if rhodes picks were just a fluke or if he was in the correct coverage

  27. avatar sanchise69 says:

and if wright didnt miss that tackle we wouldve missed the big hit on that return haha

  28. avatar starz31 says:

damn that’ll run ya over a 100 in vegas haha

  29. avatar starz31 says:

The Steve Smith TD-turned-Incompletion was a good play by Smith. Revis was right there with him. I think he even barely touched the ball. Smith caught it, so i guess he got “beat”.

in reply to Revis’ second INT being underthrown…it wasn’t badly underthrown, if it hit him in stride, then its just an incompletion. It pretty much was a jump ball with one on one coverage and Revis just had great positioning.

  30. avatar Zartan says:

Please take a look at the line as a whole.

    2. get a look at the LB coverage.

  31. avatar starz31 says:

It seemed to me, Sanchez made a concerted effort to look through his progressions. As a result, there were several times he dumped it off to the RB. I’d be curious to see if he did this noticeably more-so in yesterdays game compared to earlier games.

  32. avatar brian311 says:

sanchez doesnt seem to have good touch on his dumpoff passes to RBs. they always seem hurried, thrown too hard, and often off target.

TJ doesnt have the greatest hands in the world, but sanchez really makes it difficult on him. im not saying sanchez should be lofting pennington-type foaters that will put someone in the hospital, but a little work on the touch passes wouldnt hurt

  33. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

    Drew…
Just kidding. I lived in China for a year and you’re right it does suck.
By the way, I was laughed at by 2 genius’ on this site for saying the Jets will restrict Sanchez to 18-20 attempts per game and run 40+ times per game. This is the formula. Now, Carolina is bad but we must run the football and win with our defense. And we will be going to the playoffs!!

  34. avatar john m says:

who gives a sh–t where you are … isnt this jetsblog ..or your personal daily journal..?

  35. avatar Shamik says:

Best thing for Sanchez to learn how to do is how/when to throw the ball away and to check-down. Its not sexy, but it helps win games. He did a good job of that yesterday.

  36. avatar Charlie Weis says:

I can’t be OC of the Jets next year because the after-game buffet line would just be too hectic. I don’t want to have to battle with Rex that’s to much

  37. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

John M lighten up. In the mean time you’re the only one that hasn’t made a comment about the game

  38. avatar john m says:

it was a good win nothing to get giddy about …. yet… del holmme really stinks..

the gameplan was good and controlled ..

rhodes picks were del holmme gifts… absolute gifts…… otherwise he was ok …

    smith was great ….

    revis … forget it…

    sanchez … ehhh…

    david harris.. great ….

kinda the gameplan ya wanted to see all along ….

  39. avatar NYJ09 says:

how did woodhead look at wr.. nice if they can develop him into a guy productive out of slot like welker or small scale

  40. john m

Just looking for a little help since I missed the game while traveling.

but thanks for being a tool.

  41. Did Woodhead play at WR?

Did he get in on 3rd down packages?

I am not a fan of this but if he is playing WR he could probably return kicks

Any thoughts of him being back there for the Buffale game or still B Smith?

Did they have Cotch retun punts again?

  42. avatar Doctor K says:

    Bent:
    2 plays in particular:
    1) The 4th and long by Delhomme towards the end of the game where he just lofts it up there. I thought that with three defenders around the TE ( I believe who caught the bal) someone would have picked it off. I know its petty but that would have iced the game.
    2) The catch by Edwards where he non chalantly holds the ball with one hand while trying to fight off the defender with the other. That play made me nervous. It was a prelude to the funble by Keller at the 1 yd line.
Ball security needs to be re-taught to these guys! (Imagine the laps Mangini would have them run for that? hah!)

  43. avatar NamVetJet says:

I care AKA no matter what John M thinks

  44. avatar john m says:

so send him a text …. this is about the jets..

  45. avatar john m says:

you anounced last wek a few times you’d be in china ….. everyone knows you said it before you left …… i cant stand when guys think the boards about them … this is about the jets not you ..

  46. avatar vajet says:

geez fellas. you’d almost think this was nyjets.com

    it’s a blog!

on another note, bent, i have no idea how well you’ve dissected the jets playbook by being able to watch tape, but is it possible to tally how many tyms on passing downs franchez either went to his #2 or checked down? i’ve really tried to concentrate on his play, but i get sucked into the overall game a lot trying to pay attention to too many things. however, franchez played a lot safer. is it the scheme or ryan’s secret code words? or is he starting to smarten up and go through his progressions? i mean, obviously schotty didnt call qb bootlegs so i hope his scrambling is a good sign of things to come…. er, not the scrambling part but the decision making. LOL.

  47. avatar jon in bk says:

    John M-

Jeez, lighten up. It’s a site about the Jets, but clearly for some people it’s also about the community and the people in it- is that hard to understand?. You’re the one who really railroaded this thread. Remember the site isn’t about you, either.

I would be curious to know what Rhodes did when he wasn’t catching interceptions. It’s hard to hate on a guy w/ 2 picks, but I didn’t see him do anything else but be a second late (as usual) on a blitz.

Also would like to know what Coleman did, since so many people jumped on his bandwagon. He definitely made some plays, especially later in the game, but I seem to remember him being the guy getting beat two or three times, too.

  48. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

Drew, surprised you are getting this out through the Great Firewall of China.

    Bent:

Two things, please compare E Smith in coverage as compared to his run support, I saw mediocre coverage, excellent run support with strong hits and good instinct.

Second, I thought the D Line got their best pressure of the year, many times in base packages? Ellis and Douglas in particular. Pouha seems to be losing reps or maybe was banged up, and his replacement were getting a nice surge in Jenkins spot?

Other notes, for those asking, Rhodes played only what seem like in dime coverage, his two INTS were like punt returns, purely amateur throws that he happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Drew Coleman made some good plays late but was beaten early, improved as game went on.

Sanchez was erratic, he can make some WOW throws followed immediately by head scratchers. The lasers to Keller were things of beauty.

No need to nit pic, with wins being as rare as they are in this town right now I will happily take it.

I called this a critical game for the franchise in my pre game comment and they did what they had to do to avoid a potential tailspin. The adjustments worked for one week anyway.

IF they go and beat BUF I may even get tempted to start looking at the wild card standings again.

  49. avatar firstdown77 says:

If you made rankings of the Jets starting O-Line from this game, I would be very interested.

(and starting O-Line rankings from the entire season too)

    Thanks

  50. avatar firstdown77 says:

The type of negativity that I’m reading in John M’s complaints is really annoying and uncalled for.

  51. avatar greg sec 130 says:

“you anounced last wek a few times you’d be in china ….. everyone knows you said it before you left …… i cant stand when guys think the boards about them … this is about the jets not you ..”

Thanks for that comment about the Jets.

  52. avatar James in TN says:

    GO SAINTS BEAT THE PATS!!!@!!

  53. avatar junior says:

Can we please have someone teach shonn Greene how to carry the ball and hold on to it!!!!

  54. avatar kc. says:

actually Greg sec 130…I think the hit of the game was westermans on the sideline! Even carolina players were like WOW.

  55. avatar Brendan says:

    junior,

Greene didn’t fumble in 376 carries in college, I don’t see his fumbling issue being a long-lasting one with the Jets.

  56. avatar junior says:

i watch this kid and love the way he totes the rock and every time i get excited for our future back he breaks my heart

  57. avatar Brendan says:

You and me both, I just am not that worried about it long-term.
