Daily Links: It’s All About Progress

  1. I just want these last few games to be meaningful too. They have to win all five to make the playoffs, so while that can stay in the back of everyone’s minds, the more important thing is that the games are not just being played out for next year. Stay in the conversation, even if on the outside looking in. Having the pipe dream bursted at Indy would not be shameful at all, and then the Cincy game is played for 2010, being the final game ever at Giants Stadium.

Beating the Bills sets the Jets up for just one game where if they lose they will be once again disappointed. But beat Tampa too and the Falcon game has some juice, a last hoorah for the fans and team to see what it has in Sanchez, Ryan, et al.

Hopefully they win these two, but more hopeful that no one gets upset that they don’t finish 10-6. I don’t think they are that team yet, maybe next year.

  2. December will be meaningful regardless of playoff prospects, of which there are few. It will be meaningful to continue the development of the young players who must be the core of the team in the future. Three of them made big mistakes yesterday, lost in the fact that the team finally won a game.

Shonn Greene cannot fumble the football on the plus 25. Dustin Keller made a very selfish play trying too hard to be the one to score instead of securing the ball for a first and goal on the one. And Sanchez still threw a bad pick. These guys must get better and maybe next year will be on top instead of trying to figure out a mathematical way to make the playoffs.

  3. It’s always fun to play spoiler. I wonder if, even if the Jets fall out of contention, any of the last three games will be moved to 8:30pm.

  4. If they win the next two, the Atlanta game could be moved, however that doesn’t answer your question since that would not be them falling out.

Maybe the Indy game if they are 14-0 and no other games are interesting? Houston at Miami likely better, as is Jax v NE, Ravens v Steelers and Denver v Philly. For week 17, I’d imagine Philly v Dallas or Steelers v Miami will be the better week 17 game if the Jets are out of it.

So no, if the Jets lose to Bills or Tampa none of the final three are being moved. Only if they keep winning and are on the fringe of contention.

  5. It’s still likely to be a big game for both Atlanta and the Bengals (I agree, the Colts going to 15-0 is not really a big deal), so that might make it a possibility regardless of the Jets’ situation, but I agree, right now there are other options which look more likely.

Of course, we are all hoping they win the next two anyway!

  6. Nothing about the codes? Here is what I think; Rex calls a color and each color equals a group of so many plays schotty is allowed to call. Rex made it sound like schotty is still in charge but Rex better keep his eye on things! And I could not believe the post game show when Adam S. said the fans would be dissapointed at the less exciting offense. Is he kidding? We won! Thats what its about.

  7. The colors were from Rex to Sanchez and each color indicated a degree of aggression that Sanchez should play with. Red being very conservative and green being very aggressive (let it fly).

  8. The color code system was a joke. Stil want to see more from sanchez let him throw it when its time or sit him.

  9. It was something like:

Red = If you throw a pick, I will eat you
Amber = Okay, you can throw downfield, but no pick sixes
    Green = Favre mode!

  10. RJF,

Can’t you even be pleased with a win? My God, you are so negative.

  11. I am happy with the win. I am just concerned with th qbs future. I think we got the right qb and i am excited about him. I just dont think we have the coaches to get the best out of him. It was a good win .

  12. Well, the color code system worked, and if he had better placement on his INT it could’ve been a TD. It’s basically guiding him to use check-downs which he definitely was better at yesterday. We need better offensive/position coaches to help him improve, but Rex is going to do all he can to get this kid on track. But as a defensive guy, he can only do so much.

  13. I dont blame coordimators i blame the hc. This kid in his first year has played well enough to win 8 games! But we have 5 wins. And that is what drives me nuts.

  14. You don’t blame his position coach and his offensive coordinator, who basically had complete autonomy for 10 weeks?

  15. Hey I am all for the color system. WHat ever it takes to win. If it works great, and if it helps Sanchez understand the play of the NFL and what he has to do at different times so be it. Everyone learns in different ways. I am happy about the win and we have to move on to the next game on Thursday against the Toronto Bills.

  16. stranger things have happened….bottom line is we need to win the next 2 games. sitting at 7-6 we would be a very dangerous team. i doubt that atlanta and cincy would want to play us.

  17. I blame the hc for giving him all the control.

  18. How could a head coach watch what his rookie qb was going threw and wait until week 11 to get involved are you kidding me!

  19. Well, weeks 1-3 wouldn’t warrant any action. Week 4 was his first bad game. He rebounded in Miami. Then Buffalo happened. So, in reality, he did this at most 4 weeks too late. It’s not like he’s the first rookie to struggle.

  20. You are a real fan of rex ryan.

  21. Noone cares that for 11 weeks he was obviously had no involvement with the offense or special teams. Woody should get some money back from rex he paid him as a hc and he was just a dc

  22. No, but I think to blame him for the QBs struggles, when he’s a defensive minded coach isn’t necessarily fair. You have an Offensive Coordinator who supposedly developed Philip Rivers and Drew Brees. Do you not give that guy a shot to develop your rookie QB? In reality, it was Cam Cameron who developed the two of them, because I haven’t seen anything from Sanchez that shows to me Schotty is doing a good job of developing him. And the QB Coach has only had a QB with a QB rating over 83 once in his entire career, and that was HOF-bound Steve Young with a 97. When you’re a defensive minded coach not allowed to pick your coaching staff and are saddled with a holdover from the previous regime, you have to expect them to do their job.

  23. Rex ryan begged shotty to stay!

  24. RJF,

Going off the recommendation of the owner and GM. Do you really think he would have gone against the two men who just hired him? It was hardly Rex “begging” him to stay, Schotty ran out of head coaching options and was resigned to the fact he would remain an O-Coordinator in 2009.

  25. RJF – who knows why Schotty stayed, but I doubt Ryan “begged” anyone to do anything. Yes, Ryan’s mismanaged some things in his tenure here, but its better late than never when it comes the codes and Sanchez. The kid played adequately last Sunday and the next couple of games are winnable if we use a similar gameplan. I’m none-too-happy about Sanchez’s development so far, but we’re already in this position and the only thing we can do now is to be smart about where we go from here. Let Sanchez manage the game, take a few shots downfield every now and then to keep the defense honest and take it slow. We’re probably not going to be better than 8-8 or 9-7, but we can hopefully see some signs of improvement. The Carolina game was a step in the right direction. Personally, my plan for the rest of the season is to just watch Revis – that guy is amazing.

  26. Shamik,

I think that plan is something every Jets fan can agree on.

  27. “Rex ryan begged shotty to stay!”

There have been reports that Woody/Tennenbaum made keeping Scottenheimer a prerequisite for Rex’s hiring.

  28. codes worked. Not on Sanchez but kept schotty from calling stupid plays putting sanchise in jepordy. Schotty is (or should be gone) at end of season. so let rex cover him like he did nothing wrong but definately do not remove the training wheels he has now, to limit the damage he can cause sanchise. I think most jets fans agree winning is all we want not flashy or dull. Just win. Can anyone remember the feeling of 12 and 4 in 1998.

  29. So ryan was lieing when he said he askedshooty to stay?

  30. I cant think of 1 thing that has impressed me about ryan except for his one liners

  31. I wanted a real coach who had some jewelry and they were out there to be had. We have gone the coordinator root with herm mangini and grohl. But with tannenbaum in charge we didnt go after that because that would mean tanny would lose power.

  32. Reality Jets fan,

Wow! Really!? What did you want Ryan to do? Say I never weanted this guy as a coordinator? No way not in this Ny Media circus. He is smart not to say something like that in public. Now he may not like Shotty or want him around, but he is not in position right now to demand things and get his way. If the Jets hired a vet head coach with a resume then I could see it. So have fun with this win and stop freaking being so negative that you have been in this whole, you are pretty much eptimizing the fans that people get angry with. You will never be happy even if they won a SuperBowl, it would probably be something like…well yah we won, but I don’t think Rex is a good coach and we should have hired someone else…and I dunno is Sanchez has it…he was just lucky…lets look at the glass half empty.

  33. We have sat threw all this garbage before. We have won a few playoff games and had a few good seasons so what. Is it hope ore something u see in ryan that he is so blindly defended.

  34. I just dont understand that noone is concerned that a coach in the league for 20 years became a head coach and had nothing to do with 2 phases of his football team. Then why hire him. And again what has he shown you guys that he is so worthy of excuses. I love the qb thats positive. I think they got ir right at position they never get right. But from what i have seen i am negative on who is taking care of this kid. I am not going to just blame the coordinator. is rex in charge or not give me a break!

  35. RJF

Yea he was lying, the same way coaches all over the league lie or only let the media know so much. Bill Belichick lies all the time, he’ll say that the Lions or Browns “do some real good things” or “its going to be a heck of a game”. Eric Mangini lied to the media on a daily basis by not telling them stuff he obviously knew.

Thats reality. NFL coaches dont say everything about the team to the media or teams would have there dirty laundry aired out daily. You think guys in the locker room dont have arguments and fights that we dont know about. wake up to reality, Rex is a first year guy who got handed an OC from another regime who Tannebaum felt loyalty to, he inherited Schotty to get the job, and if Schotty doesnt cut it the rest of the season, he is gone as well

  36. WHAT HAS REX DONE TO DESERVE EXCUSES?

  37. DUDE HE HAS ONLY BEEN HEAD COACH FOR LESS THAN A FULL YEAR!!!

  38. RJF

I do agree with you that the kid was not handled right to begin with. All the points you make are valid, but you have to give him a little more slack, he is learning on the job, he has improved our defense by his presence alone and this week when he has taken a bigger role in the offensive gameplan, you saw Sanchez do some good things and manage the game well.

I dont blame you, we’ve been burned before, but for all of Rexs macho talk, the guy is really humble and willing to change when he makes a mistake. All the great ones from Lombardi to Parcells have a rough go of it the first year. Im not comparing Rex to those guys just saying you have to start somewhere.

And dude Rex is only 44, that is not that old by HC standards in the league and plus, Id rather have a guy who payed his dues and not to mention he has been part of championship teams at every level he has ever coached
