Please Stand By …

by Bassett on November 30th, 2009 at 7:49 am

We’re having something of a tough day with our piece of crap computer, so consider this an open thread to discuss whatever you like. Here’s some suggestions:

-The awesomeness of Darrelle Revis
-Where to go from here with the secondary and playing time for Rhodes and Smith
-Sanchez an your thoughts on his play yesterday.
-Why this wasn’t te gameplan for much of the season, which Rex told the fans it would be.
-How much can you take away about what this team is when facing the mercurial Panthers.

Can we please talk about Sanchez not sliding!!!

Since this will be an NFL.tv game on Thursday, does anyone have any info on which other station will carry the game in the NY market?

  3. avatar ronnie says:

    1) We should sign Revis to an extension right now so that in 3-5 years from now, his salary won’t take up a large chunk of the space.

    2) Eric Smith is a difference maker at safety. It’s like having an extra linebacker in the field who can also cover better than one.

    3) Kudos to T. Jones who is having another solid season for us. Good at picking up blocks, doesn’t turn the ball over, gains good yardage per game and now will start catching more dump off passes.

    4) Edwards is dangerous in the open field. If we see more 1 on 1 coverage on him, we should make the quick passes or slants to him more often so that he can hopefully break one for big play.

    5) The Panthers are a very good running team and we absolutely shut it down. I will not take anything away from the fact we beat them.

Revis constantly gets better. Having seen Finnegan and Asam-whatever play a couple of times this season I’m ready to annoint Revis the best in football. Seemingly, most pundits feel the same. I must admit I’m impressed with the ageless Champ Bailey.

Let Rhodes and Smith continue on their current paths for at least another week, then revisit the question.

Mark did exactly what was asked of him, a good sign. It was great to see him end the half with a TD drive, something all the good ones can do. You also can’t forget that Keller’s miscue was all that kept this game from being a blowout.

I think Rex was enamored with what he saw early out of Sanchez, as were we all. Combine that with multiple losses in which we were thisclose to winning and I think it altered the game plan. Nice to see Rex reassess and adjust accordingly.

You can only play the teams on your schedule. It was a quality win.

Jets game is on WPIX (channel 11) in NYC.

“the awesomeness of Darelle Revis” …I think you said it all.

-Sanchez needs to learn on how to slide. He’s quick and should scramble when needed, but def gotta slide.
-Braylon can be a danger with YAC, but not if he’s going to fumble. He’s gotta hold onto that ball a little more carefully.
-I liked Sanchez started finally dumping it off to his RBs after he obviously went through his progressions.
-still needs to learn on how to throw the ball away.
-why is Danny Woodhead #83? Is he not allowed to dress as a RB?

  7. avatar greg sec 130 says:

NFL rules wont allow Woodhead to change his jersey number back to 22

  8. avatar greg sec 130 says:

and it doesn’t matter what his number is — any player can line up anywhere, unless at O-line and then they have to report.

i dont look at this as some gimme win. This is practically the same panther team that went to the playoffs last year. They have a great running game (which we stopped) and a top 5 pass defense in football (which i found out after the game) I realize Delhomme is not as good as last year, but this was a good win. These guys arent the Raiders.

  10. avatar Bent says:

“1) We should sign Revis to an extension right now so that in 3-5 years from now, his salary won’t take up a large chunk of the space.”

If they extend him now, his cap number in 3-5 years will be much bigger than it would be if they wait. I didn’t really understand the logic there. Revis is basically under contract reasonably affordably until 2012. When they extend him, he’ll command probably $15m a year. I don’t think it’s a terribly good idea to bring that date forward, especially when they have so many other high priced players.

I don’t mean to bash you – I liked the rest of the post!

  11. avatar Bent says:

“i dont look at this as some gimme win”

Neither do I – they were horrible before the bye, but since then had been 4-3 and were better on the road than at home.

  12. avatar spentmiles says:

You have to hand it to Kellen Clemens. He came off the sideline, cold, and put together a heck of a drive. I liked that one pass where he went through 4 or 5 reads and then hit his receiver right on the hash marks. Too bad the ground bobbled it.

  13. avatar gr33n says:

Darrelle Revis is truly awesome, and a future HOF-er. Hopefully he can get that ring that Curtis couldn’t. I root for Pittsburgh (the school) because of those guys, in fact let’s just draft Pitt guys every year.

  14. avatar X says:

Revis Best CB in the league now… Asomugha is there too but Finnegan was never there and was over-rated/Blown up last year by a good rest of his defense and a weak slate of Opposing receivers..

  15. avatar Bent says:

    So…Charlie Weis was fired.

Anyone believe there’s a chance the Jets will try to pursue him? Personally, I doubt it, but…

  16. avatar JDB says:

it wasn’t the rex ryan game plan that he talked about because Schottenhiemer LOVES to air out the ball, he got just as excited as th fans about Mark’s first three games, then tried to make him do too much.

    A human flaw

  17. avatar JDB says:

would love to see it Bent. if there was one thing Charlie did right at ND it was offense. Charlie certainly knows QBs too. Quinn looked good, Clausen looks like a top pick, hell Brady became Brady.

Dunno if he’d want to be around the NY pressure after being under the ND pressure though

  18. avatar J-Kay says:

The only reason I’d be against Weis is that if he succeeds, he’d likely be in line for another coaching job in college (if he wants to return to college that is). So if he leaves after next season, we then have our third OC in three years for Sanchez, which is never a good thing.

  19. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

IMO…Charlie is going back to Belicheat….!

  20. avatar clyde says:

First, I think any win in this league is a good win. Whether by 21 points or 2. I remember gettine beat by the Oakland’s of the world happening to us all the time.
Revis is a great corner!! He does his job, and keeps his mouth shut. Owens will be a challenge this Thursday. He’ll do his part. Also, Eric Smith is a good safety for run support. He shows no fear going in for the hit. We all saw that last year with the Boldin hit. Finally, if used the right way Braylen Edwards could be a steal from the Browns. That quick out he caught showed me that.

  21. avatar NamVetJet says:

Think Charlie Weiss would be great choice. Things like him leaving in a year or two can all be worked out at contract time—-you just got to pay the man. I think it would be a great coup for this franchise. Just need to get the waiver from the league on total weight of coaching staff.

  22. avatar Brad R. says:

I think the loss of Leon has had a profound, negative effect on Sanchez. Leon is such a great receiver and safety valve that would no dout help a rookie qb. I was pleased to see shottenheimer use jones as a checkdown option on a signficant number pass plays yesterday. Instead of holding onto the ball too long or forcing a throw into tight coverage, Sanchez dumped off a few short passes to TJ, which I think was a result of the playcalling and formations. I think we need to continue to incorporate TJ into the passing game b/c he is a fine receiver and blocker.

As for Charlie weis, no doubt he is an excellent o-coordinator, but I question our ability to lure him over. Also, as much as I want schotty gone, I’m worried that making sanchez learn a second playbook in two years will slow his development.

  23. avatar reality jet fan says:

Get weiss someone has to make sure sanchez is not lost. I dont believe that rex or any of the coaches will help his development.

  24. avatar Bobby says:

Sanchez played alright, if you think about it he should have thrown a TD to keller if he didn’t fumble. Sanchez throws under 20 times, Jets win the game, plain and simple. D was solid as usual, as for Rhodes and Smith, both had great games. The more spectactular game was played by Smith tho. He was always around the ball making HITS (something kerry cant do), and led the team in tackles. Kerry was in the right place at the right time, not really playmaker plays, but well take it, a confidence booster. I really liked Smith starting, but I’d like to see more packages with both them in at the same time. Ive also noticed how nobody has talked about DREW COLEMAN. the guy has had a tough year, and yesterday played solid, had a great pass defensed, made a few tackles, and jacked dante roasario up in a big spot. Props to him. Edwards had a nice game, gotta run some more screens to him and J-CO, they seem to never go down on the first hit. Atleast they kept this season a little exciting, with slim playoff hopes alive. Win out boys, good win

  25. avatar geoff says:

we are one game out of a wild card. this boggles my mind. this flicker of hope will be extinguished soon, but i feel good on a monday for a change.

  26. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

I always loved Charlie Wies as an off cord. He was one of the best in the buisness and basically built the Patriot offense that they still run today. The guy just has a knack for calling the perfect play at the right time. If he would have recruited some Def players at ND he would still have a job.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Charlie Weis could get more out of Mark Sanchez in a mini camp than Schotty could with 3 years in the system

Thanks for the Thurs. TV heads up! Now I can relax…
