After the jump, I look at the performance of some of the defensive backs from the Panthers game. Please add your own insight in the comments. There is much more to come later today.
Darrelle Revis: Since Revis made headlines by shutting down Steve Smith in this game and also picking off two passes (one for a touchdown), I did not focus closely on him. Of course, his coverage work was exemplary, but he did manage to find time to make a diving open-field tackle on the edge.
Eric Smith: Naturally, one of the more interesting stories from Sunday was the performance of Eric Smith, who was starting in place of the benched Kerry Rhodes. Here’s what stood out:
- Not an ideal start as he was carried for extra yardage and a first down on a 3rd and 11 running play
- Good coverage on first drive forced an incompletion
- It didn’t appear that he was fooled on the fleaflicker. He was in decent position in coverage, but did have his hands on the receiver and was very lucky to get the offsetting offensive pass interference call, unless this happened before the replay began.
- A meaningless late tackle downfield meant that Smith had two tackles in an underwhelming, but more or less mistake-free first half.
- Left the TE open at the first down marker but closed to make a hit as the ball was juggled and fell incomplete. Poor coverage, but a good recovery.
- Made a wrap up tackle downfield but was again carried for a couple of extra yards.
- Made a good tackle on the edge shy of a first down.
- Good hit over at the sideline as Pace, Harris and Scott did a good job of stringing it out
- In a soft zone, he made an immediate tackle as a catch was made in front of him for a modest gain.
- Gave up a big catch in deep zone coverage as Coleman released Jarrett to him.
- Was beaten on deep out but the receiver couldn’t make the catch over at the sideline.
- Had a bad missed tackle on a punt return, which was uncharacteristic for him.
- Came up to make a tackle for a loss after Pace strung the play out well.
Conclusions: A solid 8-tackle afternoon for Smith, who was thrown at more than Rhodes usually tends to be and also spent more time in the box (some of it as Rhodes was employed in coverage when 3 safeties were in the game). Having heard how well he played I was actually a little disappointed, but, while I don’t think his performance was markedly superior to Rhodes’ best games of the season, if you can get equivalent production from a guy earning a fraction of the salary, then that’s a big deal. He thoroughly deserves to keep his job against the Bills.
Kerry Rhodes: Okay, so what did Rhodes do, in his new role as $10m dimeback:
- There was some talk that Rhodes simply walked off the field on Revis’ pick six. However, it was very clear that this was because he didn’t see the interception, not any sign of laziness/ego/whatever. Rhodes had downfield responsibility on the play and immediately turned to look at the bench after the ball was thrown behind Steve Smith. He was not even looking in the direction of Revis when the ball caromed up to him off Smith’s heel.
- The first interception was an errant throw but was a good read and showed off his range. I’m not sure all the safeties on the team could have made that play.
- Rhodes was barely seen in the first half. There were several 3rd and long situations early on where he was not used, but later in the game, he was always in on this situation.
- In the second half, he was sent on a blitz three times. The first set up a sack as he made an inside move and the tackle picked him up, leaving Calvin Pace unblocked. The second, on 3rd and 11, led to an incomplete pass as he took the long way round and got strongside pressure. On the third one, his hit led to an errant throw, which easily could have been Revis’ third pick.
- His 2nd pick was easy, as Delhomme felt the pressure and made a horrible off-balance throw. Rhodes was in for all of that drive as the Jets went to a soft zone late in the game.
- No throws were made to the area he was covering other than the two picks and they rarely ran the ball with him in the game, so he did not get a chance to make any tackles.
Conclusions: It was nice to see him make some plays in this role and he has also earned an increased role in the next game. Most importantly, you cannot criticize him for any mistakes (other than not realizing when Revis picked off that pass).
Drew Coleman: Coleman was another guy I was told to keep an eye on. He had an important role with Lowery and Strickland out:
- It wasn’t a good start, as he whiffed badly on a tackle attempt when the Panthers ran for a first down on 3rd and 17.
- He was then beaten by a TE on an out pattern. He didn’t do much in the first half, overall.
- He made a good hit to jar the ball loose for an incompletion in zone coverage late in the game.
- On the 4th and 14 play, he did have decent coverage, but when the ball was thrown up for grabs, he wasn’t physical enough and kind of lost his balance against the bigger and stronger Jarrett.
- As mentioned above, he released Jarrett to Smith for a long catch late in the game.
Conclusions: There was some good and bad from Coleman, but on the whole, he was picked on a lot less than has been the case in the past. Definitely something to build on. EDITED TO ADD: Apparently, Coleman also had a solid breakup with tight coverage on a play that was edited out of the broadcast I saw.
The Best of the Rest:
I didn’t focus closely on anyone else, but:
- Lito Sheppard had one of his best games as a Jet, with a solid open field tackle on third down.
- Jim Leonhard was productive (10 tackles) and made a tackle in the backfield when he was unblocked off the edge.
- James Ihedigbo gets credit for a pressure on Rhodes’ first interception.
Up next: A look at the offensive line.

Bent,
Didn’t Coleman also have a great PD where he knocked the ball away with perfect coverage, I think, on a 3rd down? It happened right in front of me at the game. Also, Jarrett pushed him in the back (earning a penalty) or Coleman would’ve had an easy INT.
Great work Bent! Interesting conculsions. I think one thing that fans immediately noticed about Eric Smith was that he had some fierce hits on the RBs. However, as you noted that doesn’t mean he had a great game. It seems also that the secondary didn’t blow any assignments this game like they prevoiusly did in the Pats, and Jags games. Did you happen to notice and signs of improved in game communication in the secondary?
Sack – the pd must have been the one play which gamepass edited out! I’ll update the original post. I did wonder if that was offensive pass interference on the 4th down. Unfortunately they didn’t see a replay.
I didn’t see any confusion in terms of secondary communication.
Bent
As we kind of agreed that Kerry played “okay” before his mess showing the last 2 weeks….. Do you think that a guy like E Smith can be a starter for this team “long” term? I mean like the kid but I still only see him as a situational player.
I am a big Rhodes fan (even tho his delusional ego) can be annoying but feel he still should be a guy we build this defense around.
nice work Bent.
Drew – they don’t pay Rhodes to be “okay” so if Smith can give them the same kind of production at a lower price, then that’s better for their cap situation. If Rhodes gets back to being a difference maker, that’s a different story.
Am I sold on Smith? No…cone back to me when they shut down a top passing attack with him in there. He was good though, and has improved lots…maybe he hasn’t finished improving either.
I still say people are being extremely unfair about Rhodes. He’s still a top 10 safety and the defense is better with him on the field.
Jesus, you may be right. But maybe he just isn’t as good as advertised, or I guess self-proclaimed. IOW, is he worth his salary?
Giving him too much responsibility may not be the best situation for him, as Mangini and Rex learned. That was kind of the idea when we brought Leonhard in, taking the playcalling away so Rhodes could focus on just ranging back there. People have questioned his work ethic, mainly b/c it was documented he was a hard worker when Vilma was here and pre-payday, but we’ve seen him do more talking than playing recently. Is it fair, maybe not. You can have an impact and not be on the stat sheet, so who knows.
He has the talent and the athletic ability, but maybe he just isn’t an all-around safety like we thought.
One thing I’ll say though is Eric Smith praised Rhodes for helping him last week in practice, this being after he was demoted. He was helping Smith giving him pointers and watching film with him. So its good hear that he does put in the extra work.
“If you can do it right one time, why can’t you do it right every time?”
Rhodes has shown he can do it all, he just needs to get back to basics and focus on where he was mentally when he did it all.
Starz,
All of that maybe true, but I just get annoyed at how unloyal Jets fans are. Rhodes has had a disapointing season, not a bad season, and everyone wants to trade him away for whatever we can get. I look forward to a Rex Ryan defense that features Kerry Rhodes as one of its star players. I dont give up on players quickly, and although I have no problem with people calling his season a disapointment, it really bothers me when people give the impression that Rhodes is not good or that he is having a bad season, because that is nonsense.
Let Smith play and keep the heat on Rhodes, sometimes players need this type of motivation and a lot of times it works. But when Rhodes reverts back to form, I dont want to hear all of you unloyal fans jumping back on the Rhodes bandwagon, because i’ll be reserving seats for the true, loyal fans.
Im not a professional game analyst or nething like that but i remember before all the rhodes talk started i did notice him around the ball alot. I mean if you think back to the new england game that why moss was complaining about revis having help. I do see that lately hes been a little sluggish but i still think were a better team with him in there. and even after the new england game he was still around the ball. granted no impact plays but i think we can all agree he can be a force back there…all the best to him and hope he gets back to his form so we can see the real rhodes
Jesus, I wasn’t picking on ya, I actually agree that at times I think he gets unfair criticism because of his off-field schedules. It’s easy to rip a guy for a few poor plays and coorelate it to his off-field attentions. Are they related, maybe, but maybe not. No one here knows how much work he really puts in and how much he may “slack”, if at all. its all speculation. Unfortunately, when Rhodes makes all the money and doesn’t produce impact plays people will call for his head. Fair or unfair, thats NY. A player can have a big impact and not be on the stat sheet, but that is lost on gullible fans.
Either way, a good Rhodes only improves our team, so I’ll always be on board. It’s just, in this town, people expect results, especially when one is paid to be an elite Safety.
Starz,
I wasnt directing any of that at you. I was just commenting on how NY fans in general are way too quick to give up on players, its ridiculous.
Jesus
You know I am a huge Rhodes fan and have defended him most of the year and while I agree his critics have been over the top hard on him ……he has made it very easy for them.
When you talk like that and always have an excuse why youre not playing well (plus he kind of threw Mangini under the bus after having 2 great seasons under him) it makes him an easy target.
Drew,
Yes, I agree. He has definitely made himself an easy target.
Personally, the trash talking doesnt bother me. No one likes excuses though.
Any luck finding the Jet game in China?
I got the replay yesterday. Got the Thursday game lined up though
Yea I actually like the trash talk but he needs to get back to making plays and then run his mouth
Bent – you wrote that Leonard had 10 tackles, but I have read repeatedly that Smith led the team in tackles with 8. Am I missing something?
NYC – according to the boxscore I used, Leonhard had 8 solo tackles and 2 assists, Smith had 8 and no assists. Pace had 7 and 3 assists.
Look on the bright side, at least you don’t have “Toast Boy” Wilhite in your backfield and Wheatley is no great shakes either. Right now every Patriot fan in the world would trade both of them for a rusty 83 Ford Escort and a half eaten cheeseburger. We’d be getting the better part of the deal.
I like the way they we exposed on monday night after all that talk the the pats dismantled a ROOKIE qb and FORCED 5 ints against the jets….nice to see the pats embarrassed!!
Care to take a whack at New Orleans yourself? Have at it.
I’ve got a question – why isn’t Revis getting more love for defensive player of the year? Every time theres a discussion about it, I see Dumervil, Woodson, and Sharper. Why not Revis? Who cares about stats, its hard to argue that anyone on defense has done a better job than Revis. Even if you do bring stats into the discussion, Revis leads the league in passes defended, which is absurd considering how rare it is a ball is thrown in his direction. He also makes a very strong contribution in the run game and almost never misses a tackle.
