Weis gets the Cold Shoulder

Under the Bill Parcells regime, Charlie Weis served as the offensive coordinator until he left for division rival New England after Parcells retirement. After that it was onto Notre Dame and obviously you can see how well that went after getting fired yesterday. Currently there is some speculation about Weis’ return to New York/Jersey but Serby and Schwartz are telling everyone to cool off.

Both Giants and Jets sources strongly stated that their teams will not pursue Weis, who was fired yesterday by Notre Dame and is likely to return to the NFL as an offensive coordinator.

If the Giants’ season continues to go south, the job security of first-year defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan and possibly offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride could come under scrutiny.

If the Jets were to go after Weis, it would be to replace Brian Schottenheimer. But the Jets’ management holds Schottenheimer — who was interviewed for the head-coaching job that went to Rex Ryan — in high regard and would hope that he decides to stay on. Of course, if Schottenheimer is privately stung by Ryan taking a more hands-on approach with the offense, he might consider other options after the season.

Obviously the Jets want to move forward and bringing in Weis probably would not be the wisest decision to make and let’s not forget that Tannenbaum has fallen head over heals for the son of Marty.

  1. i love the notion of schotty somehow having options outside the jets organization, like the fans should be scared that he may. this makes no sense, everyone wants him gone anyway! we went through the same thing last year as he was being considered for the HC position, and i certainly didnt understand it then either

his resume as an offensive coach is unimpressive at best. he would be doing us a favor if he wanted to walk. promote callahan

  2. he needs to go after this season…look at every qb that is not under schotty right now and was before, they are playing great…schotty gets too fancy with his play calling with a rookie qb, and when he is not calling fancy plays he is too conservative and his play calling is so predictable!! we need charlie weiss, i am sure he can develop sanchez and show him the ropes 100 times better that how schotty is doing it now!

  3. I scratch my head often with Schottenheimer but continuity in the NFL isn’t a bad thing. IOW, if we dont have a solid replacement in line, then no reason to create a mountain out of a molehill.
Callahan could be that. He was very successful as O-coordinator with the Raiders, and that was when they had a top NFL offense (2000-2002). He was HC in 2002, but it was still his offense.

  4. my point is, Callahan interviewed for the HC gig this past off-season, it could be possible he will look for that elsewhere. We can’t let Schotty and Callahan go, thats what I’m sayin’.

  5. or as starz commented, even callahan would b fine, just fire schotty!!! get rid of this guy!!!

  6. I disagree with the idea that bringing in Charlie Weis is not moving forward. I seem to recall the Jets finishing with their franchises best record with him as OC, as well as Vinny from Elmont having an unbelievable season with something like 28 td’s & 4 int’s in ‘98. He was also succesful for the Patriots as an OC, and everywhere he’s been. His problem is coaching the D, so it’s a good thing he doesn’t have to worry about that with the Jets as an OC. He would be the move in the right direction.

  7. yea, its either callahan or weiss…ill b happy with either 1

  8. I don’t get at all why the author of this post wrote “bringing in Weis probably would not be the wisest decision”. How about you tell us why it would probably not be the wisest decision – he has had lots of success as an O-coordinator in this league. Who cares if he flopped as a head coach in college? Lots of guys are good assistants but can’t hack it as HC (hope that’s not true of Rex). I’m concerned about Callahan as OC – I thought he had some issues in that role. I would love to see Weis in there as OC and preferably for Callahan to stay on in his current position. Shotty has potential but 4 years later and I feel like we are still enduring his growing pains.

  9. i have to disagree with you parking expert, what potential do you see in schotty?? he has been with us for 4 years and has not done much, and the same goes for him in san diego….u can clearly tell that he is not that good if you look at the qbs’ stats in his system, brees had 1 good season i believe under schotty, and ever since he left schotty he has been torching it up…look at favre now, yes he was injured i understand maybe that had a little to do with it but i think its his predictable play calling also and the other teams caught on to what we was doing on offense last year…anyways i just want him out of this organization, he sucks and needs to go!

  10. schotty has alot of potential, but my problem with him that he often calls the wrong play at the wrong time…he’s young and is still learning but we gotta move on…bringing in weiss i think is a sick move…he could help develop sanchez into a polished qb…i know it would be rough for sanchez to go through a new system with weiss but in the long run i’m telling you he would become a better qb than what shcotty is doing with him now…my vote…get rid of schotty come end of the season and bring weiss in…schotty sucks

  11. it would give us the two fattest coaches in the nfl

  12. hire mark mangino too and go for the trifecta

  13. Weis would be a huge upgrade at OC. Weis may not want to coach initially, but if he wants to work as an OC in 2010, then Tanny and Rex should, at least, interview him. I mean Tanny and Rex have kicked the tires of lots of different players that might help, why not do the same for a coach?

  14. with the likes of shannahan, cower, gruden and holmgren all available as head coaches, i am not going to worry about losing callahan to a HC job. i would be happy to see him promoted to OC, should the team go in that direction.

also wouldnt mind them interviewing weis. although i just dont seem him coaching in 2010 after being handed $18 million on his way out of ND

  15. Unless Schotty starts calling more screens and runs to go along with the deep pass, I doubt anyone will be interested in him in the off season.

  16. Schotty would be a great OC for a team that has an experienced QB with good WRs. He loves motions, replacements, spread sets He has no understanding that Sanchez is not Drew Brees. He doesn’t understand that rookies need to be nurtured.

This is why he looks brilliant at times & other times like a joke. Sometimes rookie QBs see the game well but mostly they need simplicity.

  17. Schottenheimer is a good chalkboard guy but just doesn’t have the right feel when it comes gametime and he’s on the sideline.
It’s not often under him I’ve felt the running game has gotten in a proper rhythm. He will always be a pass-first coordinator and will never gel with Rex’s run-first preferred style

  18. Tannenbaum will NEVER get rid of his boy Schotty….Remember, Tannenbaum really wanted to hire Schotty as the head coach and when he realized that wasn’t gonna fly with Jets fans and the media then he made it a stipulation that Rex retain Schotty in order for him to become the head coach…There’s a better chance Tannenbaum fires Rex and makes Schotty the head coach!!!!!! Callahan should be calling the plays tomorrow against Buffalo!!!!!!!!!!!! Schotty’s awful!!!!!!!

  19. Matt Cavanaugh would also be a good selection…Go with Weis,Callahan or Cavanaugh….Anybody but Schotty….I’ll even take Paul Hackett!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Jetsrdone,

Cavanaugh has had a QB with a QB rating over 83 just once as a QB coach or Offensive coordinator (and that was Steve Young’s 97 QB rating in 1996). If he is our O-coordinator Sanchez will not improve as quickly as we all hope.

  21. Well, the answer to this conundrum is my name.

As long as Mr. T is in running this joint no “name” coaches are coming here. Even if they would, Woody is not exactly know for paying big bucks to coaches, and Weiss would command a nice salary.

That said, I dont want him anyway, NO MORE HOODIES!

This franchise needs to let go of the Bellicheat branch of the Parcels coaching tree.

Callahan is in place and as/ more qualified than Weiss to run an offense.

Its very simple, which is why Mr. T will inevitably screw it up.

  22. Weis would be a great signing for the Jets. He is great with young qbs and very smart offensively. It’s clear he can’t be a head coach. His laid back style would mesh well with Rex’s kill everyone style.
Schotty has got to go. I am not gonna list all the reasons. We all know them. Bottom line he just can’t get it done. He has had four years to improve and I think he has taken steps backward. If Sanchez is the future of this organization, they need to sign someone who can nurture his talents and build a game plan around his talents and the running game.

  23. Ummm, I thought that the Jets were bringing Schotty back in for only a year, until he got a promotion somewhere. It’s extremely clear that he wants a HC spot, and I (and the world) was amazed that he took his old job again under an outsider after it appeared clear that he was A — if not THE — front-runner to replace Mangini.

I just don’t see him coming back unless ALL NFL HC jobs (and most high-profile major college jobs) are shut to him (unlikely) and the Jets are willing to see him increase his chafing under Rex.

Just don’t see him doing it.

  24. That, more than any nod to the Schotty Sucks crowd, may impact his not returning.

  25. I can’t imagine Shotty being offered an NFL HC job after the year the jets O is having. Then again, Cleveland quickly nabbed Mangini as if his stock was so hot that someone else might actually want him, so you never know.
    How them Browns doin?

  26. ^^ that must’ve been some interview Mangini had with the Browns. He must’ve blamed Favre all the way to a new job.

  27. And that folks, it why the Jets are the “Jets”…thank you for playing…consolation prizes will be provided at the end of the season.
