Matthew gets a Mulligan

by Weeks on December 2nd, 2009 at 6:26 pm

According to the New York Jets official website, the Jets have filled the void left by Justin Miller calling up tight end Matthew Mulligan from the practice squad.

The New York Jets have signed TE Matthew Mulligan to the active roster from the practice squad. The announcement was made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Mulligan (TE/6-4/270/Maine/West Enfield, ME) was signed to the Jets practice squad on Sept. 24, 2009, after being waived by the Jets on Sept. 23, 2009.  Mulligan was claimed off waivers from Tennessee on Sept. 6. He signed with the Titans practice squad on Nov. 19, 2008. Mulligan originally entered the NFL with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2008, and spent the first nine weeks of the 2008 season on the Dolphins’ practice squad before being released. In two seasons at Maine, he recorded 23 receptions for 268 yards and two touchdowns.

Mulligan will wear jersey number 82.

This is an interesting move as it comes after Dustin Keller fumbled a sure touchdown against the Panthers on Sunday while the backup Ben Hartsock has been getting in trouble lately with some costly penalties. I wouldn’t read too much into it though as long as Sanchez can find his guys Keller will be catching most of the action though this does put Hartsock’s future into doubt should Mulligan rise through the ranks. (By the way Bent, I hope you approve of this title, I don’t want to disappoint you again!)

    E. Weeks,

This move means nothing. Certainly not a challenge to Keller, because of his fumble.

  4. avatar E. Weeks says:

Specifically why I said don’t look into the move too much (I was just reading a little too far beyond the lines at the time), Harvlis.

  5. avatar Bent says:

Good title, but isn’t that a picture of AJ Trapasso?

  6. avatar E. Weeks says:

Good point Bent. The picture should correspond to the player now … hopefully.

So is Cotch still handling PR?

Is it Brad Smith returning kicks?

Mulligan is a terrific blocker and is very quick with very decent hands. he is a keeper because not being a o0ne dimensional TE, defenses do not get tipped off about what the Jets will be calling. Keller’s blocking has improved quite a bit this year.

Things are never good enough for you huh

    Same ol’ Bent

hahaha jk. You know though having been to more games this year it does peeve me when I see fans cheering on and then at the first slip up they start using that phrase. We won the game this week and it still wasnt enough for some of the guys in my row.

Bent, or does anyone have any news on Jenkins.I would like to know how things are going for him and if or when he’s getting surgery.

  11. avatar NYJ09 says:

Jenkins didn’t damage any other ligaments, it was a clean tear and he should make a full recovery they said. Leon Washington is the one we should be worried about, hopefully he’ll still be the same player next season but that’s hard to imagine considering how severe his injury was.

I am wondering why we need 3 TE’s not counting the LS on the roster this week?

Didnt we rush for over 300 yards against this defense 4 weeks ago? Not sure why this guy is needed unless Hartstock is in the real doghouse and wont play.

This is part of the evaluation process for next year, competition for Hartsock, and a way of rewarding one of those eight guys on the PS ( I think their game check goes from 5,000 as a PS guy to about 24,000). So in the last 5 games he makes 125,000, enough to encourage a major committment to the program. for the off season… Apparently the Jets believe he has a future here

  14. avatar Bent says:

Drew – the reason he’s being activated is that Rob Turner is hurt, so they need an extra blocking TE for short yardage sets.

I’m going to school now, so I thought I’d post and say, LETS GO JETS!

  16. avatar JetOrange says:

Bent, with Turner being out, would Slauson be a candidate to take the Turner role in the jumbo set ? it will be interesting to see if he is activated for the first time this year…

  17. avatar Fred says:

On a short week im more he’s just a safer option than Hartsock because regardleses all their really going to do is block.

  18. avatar JetOrange says:

Again I am curious if Slauson if Slauson has progressed enough to be activated.. Mulligan is a cheap alternative to Hartsock, and is he more of a receiving threat ?

  19. avatar Bent says:

Interesting idea. We’ll see if it happens. If not, I guess it’s because Slauson doesn’t have experience at tackle and therefore Mulligan would be more comfortable (maybe he plays special teams better too?)

Mulligan isn’t much of a receiving threat but he’s more athletic than Hartsock.
