BGA: Any Requests?

by Bent on December 4th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Once again, I’ll be doing a detailed review of the game tape from Thursday’s game. Please leave your suggestions in the comments for what you’d like me to focus on.
Some suggestions:
- A review of the blocking in the running game.
- A rundown of Lito Sheppard’s performance.
- Where the pressure came from in terms of the pass rush.
- A breakdown of each throw by Mark Sanchez.

Interested in these? Any other ideas? Feel free to speculate wildly about what my findings might reveal in the comments.

Check back over the weekend for the analysis…

I was extremely impressed by Mike DeVito. Would love to know more about our DL future, since I think that’s where our highest draft choice could be headed.

  2. I know this sounds crazy, but since he might be our QB against TB, how about a breakdown of how the Oline fared protecting Clemens on passing downs and how our receivers did running their routes with him in there. Of course he looked horrendous on first glance (and probably every other glance as well), but I’m wondering if the Bills pass rush/pass coverage got better once he was in or did he just take too long/miss opportunities while in the pocket?

  3. avatar Mike R says:

This is only semi-related, but maybe an actual breakdown could confirm this thought.

As a college student, I watched a lot of NCAA last year and got a great chance to see Sanchez. I never really paid close attention because I didn’t know he’d be our QB but he was great and the NFL Sanchez has not been as good NCAA Sanchez. The more I watch though I feel like it’s because Sanchez just isn’t (yet) fit to be a pocket passer. In the pocket, his throws all over the place because his feet never stop. But when he uses his feet and moves around (the leaping catch by Braylon for the first), the “TD” pass to Clowney, the TD to Braylon, is when he tends to make his best throws. The same was the case at USC.

So I guess what I’m asking for you to look at, if you will, is how do his throws outside the pocket compare to his throws inside?

If what I think I see is correct, doesn’t Schotty need to tailor the offense to Sanchez’s strength rather than make him stay in the pocket where he won’t be as effective?

Hey, while you’re at it, I know it’s game tape and it’s hard to see the secondary but I have a few things to focus on. Kerry Rhodes in the rest of the game before and after his failed “deception” on the Marshawn Lynch run. Jimmy Leonhard’s thumb and whether it’s a liability for the team to have him out there. Dustin Keller’s invisibility. Good coverage?

I also have a suspicion that Pouha got run over on that Lynch run. Poor technique or was he overpowered?

  5. avatar 50 year Jet fan says:

Have’nt seen any OC bashers today. I’d like your rundown, or opinion on the Offensive Game calls.

  6. avatar brian311 says:

this doesnt need a separate analysis, and i cant believe i am going to say it, but you have to give credit to where credit is due – our “gadget” run plays last night were amazing. T-Rich had 2 carries on counters, and brad smith and the clown had 2 on end-arounds. we gained 70 yards on those 4 plays for a 17.5 yard average.

now i realize buffalo is terrible vs the run, but you have to give credit for schotty for calling those plays. very good calls at appropriate times in the game

  7. avatar Bill says:

How about some analysis on Shonn Green. Like how many Bills defenders did it take on average to bring him down. It looked like it took 12 defenders.

  8. avatar Chrebookie says:

How bout Kerry Rhodes’ performance on the field vs Kerry Rhodes’ performance on CNN.

    both were gut wrenching

  9. avatar vurtualife says:

50 year Jet Fan: I think Mike R above makes a good point about Sanchez’s strengths when running and throwing out of the pocket, and the fact that there aren’t more plays drawn that allow for some more of such plays, since it seems to be one of Sanchez’s strengths…

So there’s a criticism of the OC, which has been mentioned before: His refusal to adapt the play-calling to the strengths of the QB currently in place, and instead forcing the QB to adapt to HIS playbook and HIS style of play… in my opinion, that’s not a good coach.

  10. avatar firstdown77 says:

    Does Brandon Moore exist?

I can’t remember the last time I’ve heard or seen his name since the offseason.

  11. avatar firstdown77 says:

Also, what allowed Lito to play well? Was it just because he tried harder or is pettine doing something special in the secondary to make it possible for him to look good?

  12. avatar vurtualife says:

    It’s because he’s [Lito] finally fully healthy…

  13. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Gholston was active. Did he play on D or just ST. Would love to see if he had any plays at all, and if you could see anything if so.

  14. avatar Bent says:

Thanks for the requests so far, keep ‘em coming.

A few comments on the above.

Firstdown77 – “Does Brandon Moore exist? I can’t remember the last time I’ve heard or seen his name since the offseason.”

That’s gotta be a really good thing! Good point though, although I distinctly remember him getting praise on one play on Thursday. We’ll see what the tape reveals.

brian311 – Yes, the gadget plays were good, although the couple of times they tried to get Woodhead involved didn’t work out (shouldn’t that be a penalty when a potential receiver is thrown to the ground?) It was interesting to see him used a lot more in that 3rd down back role and hopefully those plays will work more often than not, like they did in the previous game.

50 Year Jet Fan – Browse the site a bit more and you’ll still find plenty of Schotty bashers. I thought he called a very good first half and the 2nd half was blighted by circumstance, but it is difficult to objectively scrutinize playcalling after the fact because hindsight is always 20:20, so I will probably steer clear of that one!

Mike R – Many QBs that size are more effective on the move. My initial perspective is that Sanchez has shown flashes of both good and bad in either situation, but we’ll see what the tape says!

Keep the suggestions coming. Don’t forget to tune in over the weekend for the detailed rundown.

  15. avatar Bent says:

Greg – I don’t think he played on defense at all this week. I’ll keep an eye out for him and mention it in the pass rush analysis if he did get to play. Remember he was coming off an injury and Rex said on Saturday “I don’t expect him to play much this week”, so maybe that referred to Sunday and Thursday!

  16. avatar mole57 says:

The only time I saw Gholston was after the game, coming in late to the prayer circle. (I’m not kidding — he got there late and couldn’t make his way into the circle so he knelt down on the fringe of it.)

  17. avatar James says:

How about a breakdown of Kerry Rhodes and Eric Smith again? Both didn’t do much but the Bills didn’t throw to the deep middle at all so I don’t think either had a chance to.

  18. avatar Dean Barbella says:

    Bent,

I’m with Chrebookie and Andrew Weise. I gotta get more Kerry Rhodes analysis.

I loved his CNN Health Report with Kiran Chetry and John Roberts. Here’s their into:

“His teammates call him … He’s been in movies, he’s been on magazine covers, he’s even in a Lady Gaga video. You know he’s made it.”

    Kerry’s reply: “I’m big on the fruit…”

Gut wrenching? I’m losing weight just watching him play.

  19. avatar Dean Barbella says:

FYI: Kerry Rhodes on CNN Transcripts:

    http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0912/01/ltm.03.html

  20. avatar Mark says:

You’re not hearing criticism of the OC b/c he finally ran the ball over and over instead of having an inexperienced QB winging it up to be intercepted repeatedly. The only difference b/w the two games against the Bills is that in the first one the OC had the QB pass the ball and in this one he had the RBs run the ball. It took him half the season to figure it out, and it cost the team wins. Live and learn.

  21. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

How about Dustin Kellers blocking, the one drive I focused on it he was better than adequate which surprised me.

My lone complaint on Schotty was in the red zone, once again pulling TJ off the field just when he was running right through them. They were on their heals, yet off runs TJ ( I thought I saw a frustrated or at a minimum confused look from TJ you can check that out), and here come the pass plays.

That written, one of those plays was the throw to Clowney, but why even put the ball in the air at that point, jam it down their throats.

It seems like its, “Well, we’re in the red zone, lets flip to the red zone section of the play book and call what we see for 1st and ten from the 12 yard line” rather than sticking with whats working.

  22. avatar Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF) says:

    Mark, correct.

He was dragged kicking and screaming to the power running game and now people want to give him credit for it.

Yet when they have momentum and the offensive line is just punishing them, he pulls TJ out of the game and starts throwing the ball in the red zone.

I understand changing things up, but how about at least leaving TJ in the game and using some play action, instead of telegraphing the change by yanking the RB out of the game? I am sure the DC on the other side was quite pleased.

  23. avatar James in TN says:

If Schotty continues this course i ‘m cool with it. The over thinking crap is for vets in a system not rooks. Kerry should be dealt to the Redskins. We haven’t one upped them in a while. Opportuinity around the corner.

  24. avatar James in TN says:

I still believe he will screw it up and be fired though.

  25. avatar Bent says:

Yeah, Mark has a point. Redzone inefficiencies this year have killed them too, but when they have run in the redzone, the results have generally been awful – and a lot of the time the passes that failed were good calls where Sanchez just missed a throw. It’s too easy to second guess the playcalling after the fact.

Keller’s blocking is still not really very good, but he had definitely improved. The announcers even mentioned him making an important cut block. I’ll cover Keller in my OL analysis. He wasn’t a factor in the passing game in either game against the Bills, which is probably to the credit of their linebackers and safeties.

  26. avatar greg sec 130 says:

mole — no joke, that is how i knew he was active, the prayer circle.

  27. avatar Dean Barbella says:

I like how Schotty used Clowney’s speed. I think, I thunk I saw Sanchez dink and dunk as pass his way, same way we used Leon Washington as the kid’s safety valve in the preseason game versus Baltomore.

  28. avatar Michael says:

why was the players in a pray ciricle at the end o the game?? was it for sanchez

  29. avatar mole57 says:

    Michael,
They do it every game. Some players from both teams meet on the field right after the game and pray together.

  30. avatar David in Boston says:

On that long Lynch running play Kerry Rhodes looked like a girl who didn’t want to get her make-up smudged. He sort of offered the back side of his shoulder to Lynch as he got in the way of the running back. He’s a disgrace to his team mates and an embarrasment to the fans. This has been going on for about a month now. I know there’s a lot of dead money to lose, but I’m sorry, but he should be cut.

  31. avatar geoff says:

always good to get breakdowns, id like some insight on our linebackers and how they are adapting to what i guess is a pretty sophisticated defence. are they as a group more physical than fast? what can be improved?
things like that. backers are the heart of a football team, half guts, half glory

  32. No breakdown needed but tell me how does Rex Ryan not know that Sanchez was hurt and didnt realize it until KC was under center?

I did get to the see the game (again ugh!! ) but when I read that Ryan said that I was a little shocked. Did Sanchez run off the field and our head coah didnt see it?

Just confused since I didnt see what happened

  33. odd comment about brandon moore…generally the only time you hear an O lineman’s name is when he’s called for a false start or holding—i agree that schotty called a good game…i think there is way too much OC bashing on this site—how about Edwards downfield blocking? To me he is very impressive against the smaller D-backs and this led to some big gains on running plays—will be interesting to see if Ainge gets much work this week in practice with the 1st unit

  34. avatar MEL31602 says:

AKA- Sanchez did limp off after handing off on an end around to Clowney but Rex said he was talking with the defense on the sidelines so he didn’t see him come off.

  35. I try to keep an open mind with players…but, i think Rhodes best days as a safety are behind him — he seems to have lost the fearlessness that safeties require to hurl there bodies at ball cariers with no concern for personal injury — I think it is just human nature that once this quality is lost it will not be easily recovered — some are concerned that if the Jets let him go he will become a star elsewhere and haunt the Jets…I don’t see that happening

  36. avatar igs says:

I just watched the game on Tivo. A lot of things are coming together. I think there’s still too much penetration at the nose and still waaay too many missed tackles, especially on RBs. Revis was magic. I loved Braaaaylon’s touchdown. I hope the San man is okay. I think we saw the blueprint for what should be the ideal Jets game.

But remember, it was the Buffalo Bills.

  37. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

I hope you all voted for Revis, Mangold and Faneca for the pro bowl.If not, what’s the point in talking about them here? By the way I’ve never seen a ball drop dead centre in someone’s face like that…twas guided or something man.

  38. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

He better not get beaten out by someone Finnegan or some bull (Sugar-Honey-Iced-Tea) like last time.

  39. avatar Jason says:

Id be curious to get a breakdown of Brick in the game. I have heard varying stories saying he was awesome to mediocre, but I thought he had a good game. I thought I saw him get beat pretty bad by Schobel once where Schobel used an inside fish move (this was the play where Clemens just kind of fell over), but other than that I thought he did very well against him. His run blocking, especially in space seemed very strong.

  40. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

I’m happy that LaDanian Tomilson most likely will not get another consecutive 1000 yd season. The Martin-Sanders record seems same for now. All who is left to go down is Peterson. Horah! Horah!

  41. avatar miketaliaferro says:

I know your shopping list is now very long, but if you could follow up on last week, would you look some at Alan Faneca?

First, to see how he played overall. Then, specifically, how into the flow he was at the beginning of the game as opposed to later on when he’d be more warmed up. His MO this year seems to be that he’s a slow starter, getting beaten at the outset a lot.

    Thanks!

  42. avatar Rich K says:

Just switiching gears here, but does anyone else find it puzzling WHY DANNY WOODHEAD has NOT been given a chance to RETURN kicks or punts? Especially after his performance in the Pre-Season & HE HAS BEEN ACTIVE the past few weeks.

  43. avatar rollercoaster says:

    @Rich K

I don’t he’s every done it before. You don’t want someone unaccustomed to the position suddenly thrust into it.
