I am rooting for the Steelers. They are more likely to be 11-5 than 9-7, and we cannot beat them in a tiebreaker. We want them to take the division at 11-5, so we can beat the 10-5 Bengals in week 17 in a winner take all (likely on SNF).

Hank Gola wins the anti-Kewpie for his completely stupid article.

He fails to point out that had Tannenbaum gambled a #2 pick on signing the unproven Austin, there would have been no Mark Sanchez.

Part of the Sanchez trade, perhaps the key parts were our first and second round picks for Cleveland’s #5. Does anyone believe Cleveland would have settled for less – that Elam, Ratliff or Coleman were that important?

Gola is an idiot and a poor writer for not even acknowledging the consequences of what he suggests the Jets should have done.

The Miles Austin article is pretty silly. “Fumbled” their chance? The guy had shown little and we would have had to give up another pick that we can’t afford. Sheesh.

Colston is the one that really got away. He was ours for the taking on OUR OWN PRACTICE FIELD. I think about him more than any other player the Jets could have had.

    WW85 –

Colston was a late-round pick, so 30 other teams passed on him repeatedly, too. Yeah, he’d have been nice, but let it go …

I have said this before and I will say this again.
    1) We need Houston over Jax
    2) KC over Denver at home
    3) TEN over Indy for tiebreaker reasons
    4) Oak over Pit
    5) Mia over NE – There’s no way Miami will even finish .500 this season with their remaining schedule.
    6) Det over Cin (this can go either way for us) Some may want Cin to win out so that they can rest their players in game 16 but if they lose today, they can conceivably lose their next 2 games as well (@Min, @SD) to drop them back in to the wild car picture.
    7) GB over Baltimore on Monday night.

The problem with all that above is that all of those games are at 1pm except for the monday nighter.

It was also almost four years ago, and he was not even projected to be drafted at all. Tannenbaum had a very nice draft in 2006, let’s not get upset over a few players that every team passed on seven times over.

ronnie — Bengals beat Steelers twice. If you want them to drop in the wild card picture as I do (so we control the tiebreaker), you would actually need Steelers to win today so they don’t tie (which gives Bengals division and Steelers beat us out). It’s essentially a situation where we just let it play out until after next weekend and root later for one of them or neither of them if we beat TB.

Totally agree on the rest, esp #3 which some do not. We want Tenn to tie us.

The Austin Miles piece might be the most ridiculous article I have ever read.

First he was a RFA. Even is he was offered a contract the Cowboys were going to match it. It was well known that J Jones loved Austin and released TO because of him.

I would also say that the Jets were the only team that brought Austin in. I also remember almost every Jet fan killed Mr T for “attempting” to offer up a 2nd rounder for an unproven player.

I thought the move would have been genius/risky but it must have been a slow week in Jets news for this to be published

I totally agree. We want the Steelers to win the north because we want the Bengals to be in the Wild Card mix week 17 for us to control our destiny. If the Bengals are 9-6 going into our matchup with them on week 17, the winner goes to the playoffs (assuming the Ravens, Jaguars, etc. are eliminated)

I’ll be rooting for New England because we are not winning our division and if Miami wins, they will have the same record as us and own the tie-breaker over us obviously. So we need New England to win to put us ahead of Miami in the playoff hunt.

I will be rooting for Indy over Tennessee because if the Titans win today over Indy they will really scare me even if we own the tie-breaker over them. Indy beats them and we’re virtually 2 games up on them and won’t have to worry about them. And lastly, Houston has to beat Jacksonville.

“…he was a RFA. Even is he was offered a contract the Cowboys were going to match it. It was well known that J Jones loved Austin and released TO because of him.”

That’s true, but Tannenbaum could have inserted a poison pill into the contract so that the Cowboys couldn’t possibly match (ie if he plays 5 games in the state of Texas in one season then his salary must be increased to the average of the top five receivers in the league).

That’s what Tannenbaum would have done if they planned to go ahead, but he obviously decided the price was too much, perhaps after listening to the fanbase (bad idea).

Having said that, I haven’t read the article and it still might be ridiculous and even anti-kewpie worthy. If it’s as bad as you guys say then I doubt he will have realized my point about the poison pill.

Why on earth would we want Miami to beat New England? Our chances of winning the division are dead as dead could be at this point, and a Miami victory would keep them ahead of us in the wild card race. I’d rather see the Pats win.

Miami has a brutal schedule to end the season. They will surely lose at least 1 more game after today and be eliminated.

From my statements above with the 7 things we need to happen. Well, we will lose all but 1 so far. The only one up in the air is the Oak vs Pit game.

I think the jets need to win out and some help but they need to learn to beat the teams they should beat Jax Buf miami both games we lost in last min 4 games we should be 10-2 and working o n a home game or home field advantage but like always [crappy] teams play hard against the jets and mets all the time so we need to get focus and better and forget about playoffs till week 12or 13 when we have 10 or 11 wins . week 3 they were talking SB and de focus i still think they could of beaten saints

Yeah, w/ the way things are shaking out it’s seeming less and less likely that even 10-6 will get us in.

Assuming NE doesn’t implode somehow, I just don’t see a scenario where PIT/CIN and BAL/SD aren’t accounting for 4 playoff spots, and both wild cards.

All the more reason to just root for the Jets to finish as strongly as possible.

    Amazing endings to some games:
    The positives for the Jets
    1) Raiders beat the Steelers
    2) Dolphins beat the Pats
    3) Dolphins play the Jags next week. We will gain something on one of these teams next week.
    4) Pats still have 2 road games left as well as a game vs the Jags
So the Jags play each the Pats and Dolphins. If we take care of our business we will be able to gain games on at least 2 of these teams in just those 2 games.
    5) Ravens have a tough game tomorrow night at GB. They or the Steelers will be eliminated when they play each other in 2 weeks.
Basically, all these teams play each other slowly but surely teams will be eliminated.

If we go 9-6 we will be alive the final game, but we will probably need help. Maybe NE is 9-6 also and a loss at Hou = division.

  20. division could happen
    06. Dec, 2009 at 7:46 pm #

ronnie, you agree that we probably want miami to beat jags next week?

Then both teams can lose the following week (Jax vs Indy and Miami at Tenn) and we take care of our business!

Ravens losing tomorrow will be very, very key.

    Division,
Next week we have to root for Miami because we need only 1 loss from Miami and 2 losses from Jax.
    Both teams have tough schedules
Miami- Jax, Ten, Hou, Pit, – They just have to lose 1 game which is very possible considering their schedule.
Jax – Mia, Ind, NE, Cle – they need to lose 2 games out of the bunch. If they don’t, that means they would have beaten NE and/or Mia which would help us in the division.

    Great job Ronnie!!!!

Hey if we can even be mentioned in the playoff hunt until the last week of the season, then I would be thrilled as a Jet fan.

The massive road block of course is Mr Manning and Co. Hopefully they will be 14-0 and Jim Caldwell is on record as saying as soon as HomeFieldAdv for the playoffs is wrapped up, he is resting guys to get them fresh for the playoffs.

We just have to hope that Rex’s message carries with the boys til the rest of the season. Since Rex got more involved with the offense, Sanchez takes care of the ball, the defense has stepped its game up. We are beating the teams we are supposed to beat. Its not always pretty, but its the way Rex wants to play it and it works.

Keep TCOB in Tampa next Sun

To be mathematically in the hunt for the last game would be great. If they can win the next two, I think that’s all but assured.

Let’s focus on one game at a time though. Bucs next. Let’s hope Freeman hasn’t got all his interceptions out of his system.

BAL must lose monday, both because they have the easiest remaining schedule and it will allow CIN to potentially clinch before the final game.

IF BAL wins tonight I feel the Jets chances of making the playoffs decline from slight to miniscule.

Pats are not going to lose the division with their remaining schedule, even if Brady is hurt worse than they are letting on, so the Fin win was a bad outcome.

Regarding Miles Austin, the crime was not failing to offer him a sheet this past offseason, which everyone knew DAL would match, but rather missing on him the first go round, same as Colston.

Yes, finding quality NFL players in the later rounds is like finding a needle in the haystack, but someone IS going to find that needle and the Jets and Giants had the advantage of the haystack being in their back yard, but missed anyway.

I can understand missing a guard or CB, but BIG FAST WR’s are hard to miss and both local teams should have been onto these guys.

Marrone, from the Bronx, stole Colston after we stupidly fired Doug, and Garret, from NJ, discovered Austin. Guess all our scouts were busy assigned to the Big 10.

Is it too much to ask for them to find one quality starter in the later rounds?

“…the crime was not failing to offer him a sheet this past offseason, which everyone knew DAL would match.”

As pointed out above, the Jets had the option to offer him a contract with a clause in it that would make it impossible to match, but chose not to (ie if he plays 5 games in the state of Texas in one season then his salary must be increased to the average of the top five receivers in the league).

The Jets have tended to go after wide receivers from BCS conferences rather than small school prospects in recent years. Maybe they might rethink that in the future, but you can’t kill them for not going after two small school prospects nobody knew too much about and every team passed on multiple times.

I liked Colston myself prior to the draft, but the Jets had a lot of depth, so it’s difficult to say that either him or Austin would’ve made the team. Austin only really made the Cowboys as a KR (but the Jets already had Miller) and Colston (initially projected as a project TE) only made the Saints after almost being cut in mini camp and then getting his shot due to injury and finally making the team when the Saints were able to make a trade to clear room. The Jets had a full compliment of receivers at that time, so either one would probably have been lost in the mix.

I don’t see the Dolphins winning their remaining games, so I don’t see how them winning yesterday can be seen as bad.

    WOJF,

Cotchery was a 4th rounder. It’s not the 7th or UDFA, but that’s excellent value in a later round. Same goes for Leon. Jets are probably as lucky as other teams in those late rounds, although I haven’t gone through draft classes to actually check, it seems most teams get a handful of contributors from late rounds and UDFA, Jets included.

  30. Fire Tannenbaum (WOJF)
    07. Dec, 2009 at 8:53 am #

Bent, all true, but my point is these guys are in their back yard (or accross the turnpike) so Jets should have geographical advantage and they stilled missed.

Colston had a great all star game that opened the door for him to be drafted as a WR, did they Jets even bring him in for a subsequent look, even as a TE which we needed?

I am not killing him over those particular examples, but it sure would help to find some starters on day two.

Anecdotal, but almost every game I watch some late round player that is starting and playing very well, some starring.

Since Mr. T took over we have none.

Cotchery (4th) and Rhodes (5th) preceded him and while Leon is one of my favorite players he was not an every down player and 4th rounder, a logical spot to find a KR, scat back. I guess Lowery is the best pick for value, solid back up who may still develop into a starter.

There is not a single Mr. T pick in third or lower that is starting. He has to do better on the second day of the draft.

This is more of an offseason issue I only bring it up because of the stupid Miles Austin article.

  31. Bent
    07. Dec, 2009 at 9:05 am #

“There is not a single Mr. T pick in third or lower that is starting.”

Hold that thought. Within the next year or two, DeVito/Pitoitua, Turner/Slauson, Greene/Leon, E. Smith, Lowery and Westerman all may have a possible shot at becoming a starter and each was a 3rd round or lower pick (if you count “round 8″ picks). In fact, several of those guys have started games this year (albeit due to injuries). Clowney and D. Coleman have had also an important role and the roles of Woodhead, Cole and Ihedigbo are increasing and Elam, Trusnik and Ratliff were traded for value. When you look at it like that, he’s done a great job of finding value after the first round of the draft and next year we will see more examples of that.

(Note: Clowney, Cole and Elam were initially picked up by other teams first, but I think everyone else came to the Jets in/after the draft).

I note that several local prospects have slipped through the net, but I guess they don’t prioritize local guys ahead of any other guys (although DeVito is a good example of a local guy they didn’t miss out on).

I agree, it’s an offseason issue. When the Jets lose one more game, the offseason will pretty much be underway though.
