I think Eric Allen is missing a huge point in his AFC analysis. He thinks that if the Colts win the next 2 games they lock up 1st seed and rest players…….BUT if they win the next 2 games they won’t give up the chance of an undefeated season!!!

Due to Miami’s win yesterday our hopes now lie in the division.

Jet’s can’t lose a game, Phins have to lose 1 and Pats have to lose 2.

Phins have Jags, Titans, Texans and Steelers. It’s very likely they lose one if not two of the games on that list.

Pats have Panthers, Bills, Jags and Texans. It’s much less likely but if they drop 2 we can win the division.

Also for the next two weeks we need to root against the colts, because once they lose a game then they will not be playing for the precious 19-0 season.

    TJBfan,

Actually, Jim Caldwell (the Colts’ Wax Statue…errr I mean Head Coah) has been on record saying he would rest his players once home field is sealed up. He probably saw that the Pats players were a little worn down from going full throttle for 18 games before the Superbowl.

Our hopes lie in Brady’s injuries. If somehow the Panthers can beat the Pats, and we beat TB, I will start to truly believe. That will essentially mean the Pats are susceptible to lose another at Buff or vs Jags, so we could still be alive week 17 even with a loss to Indy (or TB/Atl), or we’d control our destiny if we won out, not having to scoreboard watch NE at Houston.

If and when the Pats beat Carolina, and Brady shows his health, the air comes out a bit.

    Brendan,

you’re right about Caldwell’s decision, but he learned that habit from Tony Dungy. Interestingly, the only year they didn’t really rest their players down the stretch and it was because they had no choice, was the year they actually won the Super Bowl. They have 5 first round playoff exits this decade, so I’m not so sure that’s the best course of action, at least they way they’ve been doing it. You can ease up on the players, but you still gotta get them to work.

Momentum is a bigger factor than rest, IMO, in the playoffs (see:Giants, Cardinals)

Playoffs? no way – no how for the JETS. Maybe next year Ryan can keep a lid on his and his player’s mouths.

    DIVISION
The Patriots (7-5) currently have a one game lead over the Dolphins (6-6). The Jets (6-6) are in third because they were swept by the Dolphins, and are two games behind the Pats because of their 2-4 divisional record; the Jets must finish with a better overall record in order to overtake the Dolphins or Patriots. This means the Jets are all but out of the divisional picture.

EnoughTalk — did you copy and paste that from 2002? I remember that season well — after the Browns, Raiders and Bears losses, it was all over.

It’s easy to say there is a 0% chance of something when it is 5%, but it doesn’t make you look any smarter to douse other people’s dim hopes for something to think about and watch the coming few weeks.

    Starz,

Couldn’t agree with you more. As I’m sure we all know, the playoffs have a lot to do with who is playing the best football at that time. You alluded to the Cards from last year which might be the best example. I never said I agree with the Colts’ way of doing things, but that’s what they’re going to do. I would tend to agree with you in that they should be playing to stay sharp and keep winning, but I won’t complain if he sits starters against the Jets.

  8. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Starz and Brendan — there is also the difference between sitting players and letting up on them. As Starz says, easing up on the players. Also, Caldwell will begin to close the playbook so future teams cannot see their newer trick plays and formations. They’ll have four weeks to practice stuff that no one will see much of at all. They’ll run basic stuff to get work in. Rex ryan will be blitzing from everywhere. Will Manning stand in the pocket and absorb a huge hit or throw the ball away a moment earlier. Will Caldwell take any risks to win the game at all costs like Ryan will? When it comes to 4th down decisions, field position, injury risk and staying close to the vest, the Jets will have an advantage if the Colts clinch, whether the starters play or not. In fact, some might say the backups will play harder.

  9. avatar StvDoe says:

Personally, I don’t care if the Colts, (or Bengals), are resting their starters.

If we can’t beat the good teams regardless of who they start, or how long they play, what’s the point anyway? Backing in to the playoffs to go one and out? Better we should prove our mettle with tough games down the stretch that prepare us for a playoff run.

All we need worry about is winning our last four. Or, at this point, beating Tampa.

Let the chips fall where they may.
