Outsider’s Look: Atlanta Falcons

By Bassett on 18. Dec, 2009

I know some of you are fond of Football Outsiders, (as am I) so once the season gets underway and trends start developing, looking at an opponent’s rankings on Football Outsiders helps to give fans some perspective on the Jets opponent for this weekend and what to expect.

(As a heads up, negative percentages are good on defense, bad on offense & specials)

Pass Offense: 19.3% (15th)
Rush Offense: 2.5% (13th)
Run Blocking: 16th // Pass Protection: 7th
Analysis: The way the Jets are playing on defense these days, they’re going to need some carry-over from some struggling teams like they’ve just played (Panthers, Bills, Bucs) as they transition into some better offenses in the next three weeks.

Atlanta’s got three very talented players in (when healthy) Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and Tony Gonzalez.  Ryan’s having a steady second season, along  with one of the league’s better backs, Michael Turner.  While Roddy White is someone that Revis will likely draw in the passing game, the concern should be more around Tony Gonzalez who has been having another great year as a receiver for Matt Ryan and the Falcons.

Kerry Rhodes has matched up well in the past against Gonzalez because they’re both athletic and tall, and between him, Bart Scott and Bryan Thomas, the team should be in good hands should any of the levels need to cover the receiver.  Still, Gonzalez will get his yards, it’s going to be about limiting him and keeping him out of the picture as a safety valve for Ryan as much as possible.  That’s the concern for me from the way Rhodes has been tackling this year.  Watching Dallas Clark’s second TD last night reminded me of the tackling I’ve seen from Rhodes all season.

As far as stopping the run, the Jets are going to be up against a unit that is very statistically similar to their own, so expect the Falcons, to rely heavily on the run, especially if the weather turns snowy.

Pass Defense: 30.3% (29th)
Rush Defense:
-9.5% (10th)
Run Blocking: 18th // Sack Rate: 25th

Analysis: This matchup for the Jets reminds me of the Jacksonville game, in which the Jets faced a tough run defense and sagging pass defense.  It was enough to lull the Jets into a false sense of security when it came to passing the ball, where they were clearly going to have to earn their keep against such a stout run defense.  While the Falcons run defense isn’t as good as the Jags is, it’s still good enough that the Jets are going to have to grind their way to a victory against this unit while running the ball, and the team needs to keep Sanchez in makable down and distance to convert on third downs, without allowing him to press the situation and then making mistakes, like Sanchez did in throwing 2 INTs against the Jaguars.  Sanchez’s first INT of the game was on the very first play from scrimmage, and was converted for seven.

If the game is a snowy one, this could make for a very interesting conundrum for the Jets and their passing unit.  Watch to see how Schottenheimer would deal with that weather element from a run-pass perspective, and when the team does pass, what type of plays are they running?

Special Teams: 0.2% (18th)

Analysis: The Falcons have the best kick and coverage unit in the league by a wide margin, so expect the Jets to be set up often deep into their own territory off kicks.

If the defense can do it’s job by keeping the Falcons from converting for new first downs, then the Falcons will be playing into the Jets hands on punts and field goals.  The Falcons are really struggling in their punting, so look for the Jets to try and capitalize as best they can for field position via punts, since it won’t come on kickoffs.  Other than Tampa, the the Falcons have had a rough time with field goal kicking this season, so look to see if misses don’t come into play on a cold, snowy day in New Jersey.

I’m hearing that Atlanta represents bad matchups for the Jets. Due to the fact that Atlanta plays the run well and on Offense can make big plays through the air.

I believe the Jets should win this game not y alot but should in fact win. 6-12 in Snow coming tomorrow Northeast NJ.

The way the Jets style of play is, its perfect for wintery- cold conditions. Heavy dose of the running game, Chez makes a few throws, let our Def do what they do.

    Lets go streaking!!!

C’mon, its a dome team coming into the freaking Meadowlands during a snowstorm against one the best defenses in the league. On our end we’ve got a top running game who can control the clock. It really looks like Sanchez’s play and that of special teams will make the difference. I predict a nailbiter actually, as I’m sure Sanchez is going to struggle in the elements. That being said, I think we’re good enough to surpass that.

Sanchez had better be out there in the elements getting used to it. This cannot be an exscuse for ever.

I think that the only 2 things that the Jets can actually count on is Darrell Revis’ coverage and Thomas Jones’ running. Brad Smith can make a difference and as mdGordon has said, special teams needs to play perfect. This game, with the snow as a factor can be close and any mistakes can be tough to overcome. The last three wins have been against some very disfunctional teams so don’t expect a lights out defense and Sancheze is as unpredictable as the weather. By the way, I’m rooting for the division but I would not be suprised if Miami gets the ring Again.

we have the formula…. run the ball, play good defense, especially on 3rd down.

We need special teams to be solid and Sanchez to play smart. No PIck 6′s. I also believe we will need Sanchez to make a few plays. Atlanta will stack the box bigtime on us and we’re going to need a play here and there.

Gotta stop the falcons run and Tony G on 3rd down.

Revis and Roddy White… I’m comfortable with that!

The Falcons kickoff stats are helped by the dome, different story tomorrow.

Not that they will be kicking off often anyway.

The most important stat is the Falcons are 1-5 on the road, 5-2 at home. Different team on the road traditionally, not just this year.

Yes, they will stack the box as all teams have been doing, which will work for awhile, but once Jets loosen them up with a few completions (hopefully none to the other team) the floodgates will open and TJ will be off to the races.

And I will take my chances with Jay Feely in the elements.

I am interested to see how the Jets defense handles the first decent offense they have played in a while, but I am confident they can contain Turner, if he plays, and the elements will be the 14th player on the field (Revis counts as TWO players) which should completely shut down the passing attack.

BIG point, IF Cowboys win tonight ATL is eliminated, so, for one of the few times I will ever type this in my life, GO BOYZ!!

Jets 23-6 IF they play error free, 26-20 if Sanchez turns into Mr. Turnover again.

It will be the battle of the streaks in IND next week in either case.

*13th player on the field, REVIS is great but does not count as three players and the traditional 12th player on defense, the fans, may be a non-factor.

Why do you think the fans may be a non-factor? Seems to me like it should be a very good crowd, first home game since we were 4-6, classic December football elements and the ability to rattle a dome team? I’d be disappointed if it weren’t a rowdy group tomorrow.

Agree those that are there will be rowdy, but a ton of empty seats will impact the effect.

If not aware there is major snow storm forecasted today with blizzard warning on LI, still the home of many season ticket holders. Travel is going to be close to impossible tomorrow AM.

    In fact the storm is impacting other games, see below;

The Chicago Bears had not yet reached Baltimore as of midday Saturday. Snow is also falling in Chicago. The game has been moved back until late in the afternoon at M & T Bank Stadium

    I saw that, Wise.

On another site, it was suggested that the Jets should petition for their kickoff to be moved from 1pm to 4pm too (because the Giants play at night) which could be beneficial since the snow should stop in the morning, but I guess the Baltimore game was allowed to move because the situation there is a lot worse.

Besides, other than Sanchez, the bad conditions should be an advantage to most of the Jets players because the Falcons are a dome team.
