Jets – Falcons: What to Watch

Jets Inactives – WR David Clowney, G Robert Turner, QB Kevin O’Connell, CB Marquice Cole, LB Kenwin Cummings, RB Chauncey Washington, LB Marques Murrell. Ainge is the 3rd QB. Analysis: The Jets are bringing as many fatties to this fight as they can. Guys like Clowney and Cole aren’t the biggest priority in cold weather slugfests.

This Aint No Beach Trip — Here’s a great chance for Sanchez to show that he can play in the cold weather and that he can adjust to it. Brady has made that So-Cal to NE transition (via Michigan of course) … will it affect Mark? Phil Simms said this morning to Francesa, “don’t force your throws” in this weather.

Run Run Run! – Of course the Jets are going to have to throw at some point, but it’s all about the run. The Jets are going to have to grind on this defense. Get Sanchez in makeable third and shorts and the Jets should be fine offensively. Sanchez needs to play within himself, and err on the side of caution with his throws (throwing it away, towards the sideline, etc.)

Gonzo & Turner the Burner — Watch to see how Michael Turner matches up against the Jets linebackers. David Harris and Bart Scott might be better suited to stopping him than the OLBs, so see where the Falcons and Turner try to probe for weaknesses on this unit. As far as Gonzo, Kerry Rhode is KEY here. Here’s a simple equation:

Rhodes/2 + Smith/2 + Leonhard =/= Smith + Leonhard

Kerry Rhodes is a key factor in stopping Gonzalez. Watch to see if he can shut him down as he has in the past on Gonzalez. Oh and Kerry, ARM TACKLES!!!!!!!!!

No, We Will Fight Like Lions! — In that “fight to the death” concepot, it looks like the Falcons have nothing left to lose … but how will they respond from that? Will they go all out, or look to get out of New York without injury? Although the Falcons were eliminatined from postseason contention last night by the Cowboys, expect them to put up a fight today. At last check, Matt Ryan was trying out his toe, and Michael Turner is expected to play.

The Return of Abe — While Brick was widely panned in his first two years in the league, watch the matchup on Abe, one of the league’s better pass-rushers and see how he fares today.

Macho Man — According to Randy Lange of the Jets, in warm-ups, NoCal-er Dwight Lowery was out on the field without a shirt on. I don’t know why I wanted to mention that, other than I think that’s funny.

  1. Actually, Brady comes from the No Cal, San Francisco area. Not exactly the frozen tundra but it’s not la la land either.

If Favre can go from Mississippi to Green Bay Sanchez can make the transition. It’s all about wanna.

  2. Remember when BJ Askhew did that in Green Bay back in 2006, we kicked the Packers ass like 31-10!

  3. Askhew went shirtless in 2006 when it was something like -10 degrees.

  4. awful, just not meant to be. how can this team stand the fact they suck in the clutch. I’m a out of town fan, fortunately , not having to deal local suffering. i feel for jets fans right now and it really hurts while my wife cheers for the eagles.
