  1. Like ‘em- especially the travel time to playoffs.

  2. Some of this are confusing. Also, Rhodes makes his open field tackles except for the Buffalo and NE games.

  3. Everyone keeps saying the Jets need to run the ball more. No they don’t they just need a qb that doesnt throw back breaking picks in key spots. Jets are #1 in the league in rushing yards and rushing attempts. You can’t expect to win in this league if your qb plays as bad as Sanchez has played.

  4. Bassett,

Great job on the charts. You’ve been studying.

The Rhodes chart is on the money.

It’s the SOJ because of the common denominator — Brian Schottenheimer.

  5. Tom… by that logic, they don,t need a “qb that doesnt throw back breaking picks in key spots”, they need Payton Manning. Since Payton is on the Colts, the Jets need to put their team in a position to succeed. When you have the top rushing attack in the league, you shouldn’t be calling pass plays in freezing and windy conditions. End of story. Blaming a rookie is a cop out. Hes not the reason we lost all those tight games.

  6. Comedy is to TJB.com as TD/INT ratio is to Sanchez’s rookie year.

  7. NJets hasn’t been watching Jets game this season, i suspect.

  8. *games

  9. you guys can get a press credential… double dog dare to ask Rex if he’s ever spent $40 at taco bell bell.

even $20 in 1 sitting at taco bell would be impressive.

if they beat cincy to get in, might even get away with it. who knows maybe it leads to a commercial a la those lousy coors light spots.

  10. Actually, NJets is right on the money.

  11. lol ouch JetObsessed! :)

  12. No we don’t need a Peyton Manning as QB. We don’t even need an Eli Manning. If all we had were 12 TD and 12 INTs from the QB position we’d be playoff-bound already.

  13. i still think we need to throw more conservation passes on 1st down when theres 9 in the box and get 5 or 6 yareds. Not run into the line and then force sanchez to make a play on 3rd and 7 or 8

  14. NJets We have rushed the ball more than any other team in the league there comes a time in the game where you do need to throw the ball. You don’t need Payton Manning to manage the game you just need someone whos not gonna throw 25 picks.

  15. i mean it affectionately of course.. i do love what you guys do for us tortured fans!

  16. thanks JO, just like Mark, I need to put more time in and work harder. :)

  17. Miami monday night, Buffalo, Jags, Falcons….I’m pretty sure Sanchez had us in the lead late into all those games with only minutes to win (interceptions and all). Its his fault we lost those right? Its his inexperience, his poor decisions right? COP-OUT! Anyone blaming a rookie is just being dumb. You can point at one of Marks interceptions, and I can point back at all the Interceptions Kerry Rhodes didnt make, all the stupid penalties, all the defensive let downs with minutes to go, all the special teams disasters.

Who wouldn’t want those 4 wins back right now?

  18. Tom,

Im not the one that gave Schotty the “whee lets just throw it” reputation. Its been there, people agree with it, and theres a reason for it. The reason is that he gets pass happy as soon as one big pass play works. Instead of reeling it in and taking your shots here and there, he gets giddy and starts airing it out. Yes we rush the most in the league, but thats because we are the best at it. Why the hell would we revert away from that?

  19. NJets, I’m not saying that they should throw more but they are running it 60% of the time and 75% on 1st down both tops in the league. They are running it enough they just need there QB to be average and throw the ball away instead of to the other team

  20. I was just researching on Bill callahan and he is a much better OC than Shotty. in the 6 years he was with the Oakland raiders 4 as OC, he had the :

    16th in total offense
    4th in total O
    5th in total O
    6th in total O
and as head coach he had the NO 1 Offense in the NFL. We need to really fire Shotty!!!!1

  21. The percentages are deceiving. You can run 60% of time and still throw at the wrong time, or get 40% pass happy in one string of plays. Schotty has no sense of flow, he has put Mark in terrible positions often this year (ill never forget that interception on a long play action on the first play of the game). Again. Mark had us in the lead with minutes to go in 4 games. He might of lost us a couple but in the long haul he put us in a position to win way more than he put us in a position to lose. End of story. Find another scapegoat. Blaming rookies is a cop-out.

  22. It’s amazing to me that Sanchez is getting such disparate treatment from Eli Manning. When Eli came in for the Giants (on a team that had a good defense and running game…Tiki made the Pro Bowl in Eli’s rookie season), the Giants were 5-4 and in the playoff hunt. Eli went 1-6, only completed 48.2% of his passes and only tossed 6 TDs to 9 INTs. The press and Giants fans all took it in stride because everyone recognized that you have to get rookies actual NFL game experience and rookies, generally, do not play competently in their rookie season. Moreover, Eli and all Giants fans got to see Big Ben, drafted the same year, go 13-0 and far outperform him. Yet, I don’t recall any criticism of Eli that has been as vitriolic as what Sanchez has faced.

Sanchez throws INTs that he shouldn’t. Peyton threw 28 INTs in his rookie year, Aikman threw 18 in 11 game starts. I think that Schotty’s offense is not QB-friendly when it comes to INTs because so many passes go to the WRs. But, I just can’t believe that Sanchez hasn’t gotten a “rookie pass” like Eli got from NY fans and the press.

I’m not a person that puts race or ethnicity into every argument, but with the “taco” comment, I’m starting to wonder if the Jets had drafted Stafford (20 INTs in 10 game starts) whether he would get the same treatment as Sanchez.

  23. Pretty sure that makes no difference.

You’re right though, Sanchez has a low completion percentage because he doesn’t throw any dumpoffs. A better measure is IMO yards per attempt…which I will now go away and look into.

  24. Sack, “Taco” has nothing to do with race, it has to do with KSK

    http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2009/10/coach-ryan-likes-hot-dogs.html

    etc.

  25. Hmmm. 6.9 Y/A good for 18th in the league, ahead of Cutler, Ryan and Henne and that’s without many big plays (until Braylon’s catch, the longest all year was 53 yards).

Point of reference: Chad Pennington, the all time leader in completion % has a career average per attempt of 7.2 yards.

  26. Wait, wait, wait…
Bear Grylls is far more badass than Lord Voldemort and Ron Artest. And Batman, when Batman is less than or equal to George Clooney or Val Kilmer.

  27. I’m not typically one to play the race card, and I’m not saying that Sanchez isn’t getting a fair shake because of his race (I don’t think this is the case), but i don’t think we can dismiss the idea. Leaving the game sunday i heard a bunch of fans ripping sanchez. I heard things like “Mexicans don’t play football, He should go back to mexico, How could the jets be so stupid as to draft a mexican and think he could qb in ny, that’s why you don’t draft a mexican etc.” I don’t recall hearing a thing about the 3 squandered fg attempts. It really annoyed me. Just saying, those sentiments are out there.

  28. Dammit Taco!!!!

    Good stuff, good stuff.

  29. 2g – I didn’t realize that. Hopefully it’s just a frustrated minority.

  30. Go Bent Go!

There are certainly flashes of brilliance in Sanchez’ play.

I am shocked that Jones and the OL are seemingly blame free, but we can somehow blame a guy that scored the only points in the game. Where’s the anger that a guy who was supposed to have a career game, found a way to avg less than 3 yards.

  31. Ron Artest would kick Bear Gryllis’s butt. No contest.

And I can’t wait for Kerry to be traded. Maybe we’ll pick up a few of the draft picks for next season we traded away.

  32. I didn’t want the Jets to draft Sanchez because, by my own idiosyncratic QB evaluation, I thought Josh Freeman had as much (or greater) chance for NFL success. But, I had been pounding the table for a long time that the Jets had to draft a franchise QB. I wanted Matt Ryan in 2008 and, when Sanchez became the frontrunner before the 2009 draft, I warmed to the idea. That Freeman is African-American and Sanchez is Mexican-American never entered my thoughts.

I must say, after watching Sanchez very closely, that he has all the skills to be a successful NFL QB, except experience, which to me includes knowing when to take a calculated risk and when to check down, take a sack or throw the ball away. Sanchez has tossed 20 INTs, which is entirely too many, but except for the INTs and some accuracy issues (which have improved over the season), he’s progressing.

So, I just don’t get the relentless criticism. He’s a rookie, he has talent, he’ll learn. Eli learned and the Giants won a Super Bowl and Eli had bouts of terrible inaccuracy and curious INTs throughout his career. I just don’t understand why Eli, who didn’t crack a 53% completion percentage until his 3rd pro season and, IMO, played far worse than Sanchez as a rookie got a free pass, while Sanchez has been raked over the coals.

Is it the press’s unbridled criticism of everything Jets? Or, is it something more sinister. Because, after this particular game when the team misses 3 FGs and gets 3 terrible and untimely unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, everyone has pinned the loss on Sanchez. Heck, like I said before, the only thing that kept Sanchez’s numbers from being much better than Ryan’s was the fact that the Jets defense dropped every INT chance, while the Falcons defense made all of their chances.

I know we’re Jets fans so we have to criticize everything, but now we’re on the kid because he didn’t win the game after being put in a deep hole by his All-Pro OG’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty? I mean shouldn’t Faneca, a 12-year NFL player and future HOF’er, get more of the blame? I’ll be the first to say that it’s time to replace Sanchez if the INTs continue (although I still think Schotty’s offense is not INT-friendly), but I can’t throw a kid under the bus that so obviously has a ton of talent.

  33. I think Sanchez isn’t getting the Rookie pass because he’s with the JETS. And the Media likes to trample the jets. Also, it didn’t help that there was so much swagger going into the season that we were a playoff team, and the compairson to Flacco and Ryan. This set a high bar for Sanchez.

In addition, I think Rex needs to tone down his press conferences sometimes. It doesn’t help Sanchez for Rex to reveal, or say that he has that UGG stuff in his helmet or call him a knucklehead. The fact is that MANY players had it put into their helmet, but with a rookie socal qb like Sanchez, it puts further emphasis on him that he’s soft, or can’t take the cold. The fact is its irrelavant, other than getting a laugh or two at a press conference.

  34. I am not one to bash on our coordinators all the time, but I do think it is time for Schotty to go. I never hated Paul Hackett and I actually think he would be a real good coordinator for Sanchez because we always used roll out plays and through to the fullback and running backs and tight ends alot. I do really really hope that Callahan is our new coordinator next year. Maybe he could simplify things a little bit and use some of the same terminology. Remember what he did for Rich Gannons Career. That offense was unstoppable and most of their throws were short slants and running back passes. CALLAHAN FOR COORDINATOR SIGN HIM UP!

  35. SD is dead on with his assessment of the situation, at least in my eyes. Eli was “the savior” blah blah blah and never got ripped this bad, even when he posted a ZERO QB rating. ZERO! As in “you can’t statistically do any worse than you are right now”, zero.

I look at it this way for all those people wanting Jeff Garcia, or Kellen Clemens, or Chaddy Boy’s shoulder ligaments, or whoever at QB: You win the Superbowl with a franchise QB. You can point to Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer doing it, and those are aberrations. You need the franchise guy. Would you rather go into the playoffs and (realistically) lose in the first or second round in the 2009 season with a veteran QB? Or would you prefer to just miss the playoffs (or lose in the first or second round in the 2009 season, hey…it’s possible) with a rookie QB taking his lumps so that 3, 4, 5 years down the road you have a franchise QB who has grown with this team (and his head coach) and gives us the best chance to have long-lasting success? How this is even a debate is beyond my understanding.

  36. “I do really really hope that Callahan is our new coordinator next year. Maybe he could simplify things a little bit and use some of the same terminology.”

Unlikely. Callahan’s reputation as a coordinator is that he over-complicates everything. However, he is a West Coast Offense guy, so that would introduce more short passing on the move.

I’m not sure if the fact that those plays have disappeared from the gameplan is down to the coordinator though. I am concerned that Sanchez just doesn’t throw the short stuff with the required accuracy and timing, which is why when they have done it, with the box already stacked to load up on the run, it hasn’t usually worked.

  37. SD99, I agree! The penalties were killers and totally unnecessary. Rex didn’t want to touch the question in yesterday’s presser as he was obviously exchanging words with Ron Winter. The feeling was that Faneca came in before the whistle had blown. The game had been getting chippy so, in a vacuum, the play was a bad call but, as a vet, Faneca has got to understand the flow of the game and how the officials are handling themselves. Those three penalties were outrageous and the players have to be more accountable on those issues. I saw Strickland answer on the facemask but have not seen any quotes from Faneca or TJ.

At this point, after 40 years of frustration, I have come to expect a doomsday response to Sanchez’s struggles but hope that the organization is doing enough to support him and help him learn through some of the obviously poor decision making – and that they, for once, don’t listen to a fan base that is guided purely on emotion. There tends to be a big jump in players who have the skills somewhere between year 1-3. I hope, for Sanchez’s sake, that the jump comes this offseason as the already impatient fans tend to have more decision making power with this team than any other NFL franchise.

  38. Brendan and SD are both spot on.

To add to those points… people seam to forget that our best offensive weapon was injured and done for the season. Productive dump-offs, gone. Legit go-to third down option, gone. Explosive, drive-changing runs, gone. Game changing special teams play, gone At the end of the day what are we really upset about? That he wasn’t a “savior” like Big Ben was? What is it exactly? I don’t get it. The answer I keep hearing is that they want someone who doesnt throw so many interceptions and takes care of the ball. But again, Miami monday, Buffalo, Jags, and Falcons. 4 games where Mark had us in the lead with minutes on the clock (interceptions and all). If we are going to bank our season on a rookie who was supposed to be the “savior”, then we are the ones that screwed up, not him.

  39. I like Sanchez a lot. I feel like he’s done everything he needed to do this year.

Next year, we should see better ball security. I like his chances to have a major step up after an off-season to digest everything that’s happened.

I’m happy with where we’re at. We knew this was a rebuilding-type year going in. The fact we’re still alive for the WC is a bonus. The fact that the defense is pretty amazing and the run game is stout makes me think this team is all kinds of on the right track.

2010 – 2011 The window is very open.

  40. new record…6 pro-Sanchez posts in a row.

  41. Brendan,

We’re on the same wavelength. It’s a simple question: why was Eli allowed to fail as a rookie, but Sanchez isn’t? And, I know Jets fans think that all the team needed was a Dilfer- or Johnson-like game manger for this team to go deep into the playoffs. Well, I disagree. The defense is very good, but until it has a bona fide pass-rushing WILL, this defense is nowhere near dominant.

I’ve been watching the NFL for a long time and I’ve seen truly dominant defenses, like the 1976 Steelers that pitched 5 shutouts and allowed rookie QB Mike Kruczek go 6-0 without tossing a TD pass (that team lost to the Raiders in the AFC Championship game after Harris and Bleier went out). I’m sorry, but this defense is nothing like that defense, the Ravens defense in 2000 or the Bucs in 2002.

One last word on the ‘76 Steelers. That team knew that it’s rookie QB needed a dominant defense and running game and it rallied around Kruczek, providing him with an amazing defense and a running game that produced 2 1,000 yard runners. Where’s the rallying around Sanchez? The running game was awful against the Falcons and TJ’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was huge. A better team would’ve covered up for the rookie mistakes, instead of expecting the rookie to cover up for theirs.

With a better QB, the Jets could’ve won the AFC East. I agree. But, if the Jets ever want to get to and win a Super Bowl, the Jets need an upper echelon QB or the defense has to become historically good. But, like the 1976 Steelers, even an historically great defense (they only gave up 138 points in 14 games) can only take you so far.

  42. While I agree that it’s ridiculous how much blame Sanchez is getting for this loss, ultimately I think this will help him. The kid has the heart of a lion, but he needs to develop a thicker skin. He’s still a baby in terms of NFL QBs, and I’m of the belief that this will make him stronger and more able to deal with adversity. Dude was pampered at USC and could do no wrong, and how he responds to New York criticism is going to define his career. I have faith in the little homie.

On an unrelated note, TJ looked utterly awful on Sunday. Might have been his worst game as a Jet. He’s way too feast or famine. It’s 8-10 yards or nothing, and with a rookie QB, we need a consistent RB to keep us out of 3rd & long situations. Greene is way more steady as long as he holds onto the ball, and I’d like to see A LOT more of the LocomoShonn these last two weeks. Basically, as much as I love TJ, I feel like his production is way more contingent on how the O-Line is playing than Shonn’s. SG is the future, let’s give him the ball more.

  43. Everyone keeps saying Eli got a free pass. Until his SB year, Eli was getting crushed by the papers daily.

C’mon, this is the NY Media, if you’re not on top, you’re on the bottom.

  44. Eli never got a free pass. And neither should sanchez. But my expectations were based on my coach talking about visiting the president.

  45. i’m against Schotty too. on the first drive of the game, on 2nd and 11, and we’re in a 4 wide set. If we’re trying to set some kind of tone, then at least show a 2 back formation and pretend like you’re gonna run.

I was unhappy (this is an understatement).

  46. Your coach also said he did not expect to visit the president this year. So why the panic?

  47. Panic is the only way to be. yOU HAVE TO ASSUME THE WORST.

  48. I think the reason why Sanchez gets the blame his simple. He accepts it.

He goes to the mic and says, “Sorry, it’s all my fault!” And the journalists who know nothing about football, pass that sentiment along to the readers, who, for the most part, don’t know anything about football.

That’s what a leader is supposed to do, and is good for the team if he can handle it. He allows the rest of the team to stay focused and get the job done.

  49. this is the best TJB post evar!

  50. PickSix – check out some archives on Eli’s rookie season. it wasn’t until year two that he was truly blitzed with the vitriol Sanchez is receiving. Some links:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/22/sports/football/22rhoden.html?_r=1

    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/sports/football/31giants.html

Before you go crazy, I know there are many articles criticizing Eli as well but, just as much, Accorsi was vilified for not providing an improved offensive line and injuries were constantly cited as a 5-4 team (with Kurt Warner) went 1-6 down the stretch with the rookie. Its already been mentioned but, his zero passer rating game still was met with some “he’s just a rookie” commentary. again, a ZERO passer rating and a game he was pulled from yet, he started the following week! Jets fans would be lighting the upper deck on fire (again) and the press would be along for the ride.

  51. great post bassett but you forgot to add the slim-fastic win over oakland

  52. also the thing that people are leaving out of the Sanchez vs Eli discussion is the fact that Eli was a 4 year player in college and started 3 years. Sanchez started 16 games. If anything, there should be more slack on Sanchez because of his lack of experience and the fact that he was the opening day starter for a NY NFL team as a 22 year old kid.

i think that is boils down to the bar he set by his performance in games 1-3. that bar was ridiculously high, he was on pace for 3200 yards, 23 TDs and 11 INTs. so he has come back to earth a bit. but im my mind, that was to be expected

  53. Eli did not get crushed his rookie season. In fact, there were many writers who said it was a mistake for Warner to start and that Eli should’ve started from day 1, like his brother, in order to speed his NFL learning curve. I just think it’s ridiculous that Sanchez is getting ripped after this loss. If veterans like Jones, Strickland, Faneca, Dearth, Feely and Clemens had done their jobs, the Jets would be 8-6. This was not the Buffalo game where Sanchez hurt the Jets with his play. Against the Falcons, in terrible windy conditions, he did his job by getting the Jets to the redzone 5 times (including the TD bomb). Three missed FGs and a stupid penalty cost the Jets points more than any Sanchez INT.

  54. SD99 – loved this quote as I have not read a more truthful sentence about this season:

“A better team would’ve covered up for the rookie mistakes, instead of expecting the rookie to cover up for theirs.”

  55. The Kerry Rhodes graph was spot on, he is a p@ssy.

I hope that Schotty is schown the door at the end of the scheduled Scheason. Why? Because he Schucks.

Also anyone criticizing Sanchez needs to remember he is just running the plays that are called. Scout out for T.O.. LOL

    Seriously fire schotty now!!!

  56. First, I dont think Sanchez is getting crushed by the media, properly critcized yes, crushed no. He did not have a good game.

Was he the only reason they lost? Unlike the BUF game, no. But he did contribute.

In addition to the players mentioned the HC, for opting to kick a FG one yard from the promised land, the DC for going against what was working all game in the final drive, and the OC, for once again creating a gameplan based on the opponents perceived weaknesses instead of his own teams strengths, also deserve criticism.

It was a true team loss, with all but Braylon deserving a share (and he took blame anyway, which I love btw).

Up until this week the coverage of Sanchez was mostly favorable, and this week almost every criticism is accompanied by some justification, as it should be, he is after all inexperienced. I did not see anyone claiming he is a bust, or that he should be benched this week.

Its the internet where the cricism has gone out of control and lost focus on the bigger picture.

Eli was not criticized as much in his rookie year?

Not sure about that alleged fact, but if true one reason might be simply that he started so few games. The season ended before before the media had time to run out of patience. He got a clean slate to start Y2, and he was making progress by HIS 13th start, which happened to be in his second season.

Mark basically got a pass the first half of the season, but now that he has failed to grow despite the color coded stupidity the media is starting to take a harder look. Only natural.

They expected to see progress, they, and I, have not seen enough (although some of you say you have).

  57. And yes I love that SD quote too, a better team, and a better coaching staff, WOULD have covered up for his mistakes, they were not the main reason they lost this game.

I also agree with SD that despite being a statistically good defense this team desperately needs a true pass rusher that can provide pressure from a base package, you will not beat the good teams just by pressuring, you need an actual sack on occasion.

The shame is that if Clemens and Gholston had both been the real deal they could be making a real run this season.

  58. I would love to see a post about what we’d trade gholston for ie a pack of gum.

    Go Sanchez!!!! That’s my QB!!!!
