The Rundown: Please Put Down the Crack Pipe

I’m trying,
I’m trying to
Drink away the part of the day
That I cannot sleep away
-Polar Opposites by Modest Mouse

For anyone who watched Rex Ryan Sunday after the Jets game, when he came out and addressed the media, the mood he was in when he addressed the media (see here on NFL.com, just look at his eyes!!) was sullen, depressed … he was a beaten man. In other words, everything you didn’t see from Ryan last summer.

The strain in his voice was palpable, even with how frustrated I was at the time, it was hard to watch. Maybe it was just me projecting, but to me, it was as if he felt like I felt; Rex was utterly crushed, maybe even a tiny bit suicidal. Rex told the press “we’re obviously out of the playoffs, so that’s unfortunate.”

So imagine the beatwriters (and many fans too, I’m sure) surprise when he came out chipper to yesterday’s presser? Cannizarro marks the moment in today’s Post.

Yesterday, during the team meeting, Ryan stood in front of his players and dramatically reversed course, presenting what he believes are realistic scenarios for the Jets to still fight their way into the postseason.

One day after speaking in tones of doom, Ryan was borderline buoyant.

“First off, I was dead wrong in the playoff scenario,” Ryan said. “You would think that the head coach of the team would know the [playoff] situations. I thought we had to win out. We had a single focus that we were going to have to win six straight games [after the 4-6 start].

“We don’t [just] have a possibility, we have a huge possibility — if we’ll win out — that we can be in the playoffs.

“We’re actually in a better situation right now, this week, than we were last week at this time. That’s unbelievable. We’re there. We’ve got a chance to make the playoffs and, hey, we’re going for it.”

Do whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!?!!!!

Seriously Rex, please tell me this is a yellow journalistic tactic … just a setup by the beat writer so those columnists can berate you. I mean, better? I’m sure there’s some mistake, let’s check what Dennis Waszak wrote for the AP:

“We’re actually in a better situation right now this week than we were last week at this time,” the Jets coach said. “That’s unbelievable.”

So much so, that it stunned even Ryan, who was downright angry and frustrated after the Jets’ 10-7 loss to Atlanta. On Sunday, he said the Jets (7-7) were “obviously out of the playoffs,” not taking into account the many head-spinning scenarios that still give them a slim shot.

“I was dead wrong,” Ryan said, offering a mea culpa. “You would think the head coach of the team would know the situations, know the playoff scenarios, all that. The only thing that I knew is, in my opinion, I thought we had to win out.”

Ryan addressed the team’s chances with the players Monday, laying things out for them. Truth is, the Jets would be sitting pretty had they beaten the Falcons because so many other teams in the mix lost.

[Hand to forehead]

[Sighs]

OK fine, I give up, the Jets aren’t out of the mix.

I appreciate that Rex would fall on his sword, would rally his team, but let’s face it, the toothpaste is out of the tube. The fans had a window into how Rex feels, no matter how much he puts a good face on it, no matter how wrongly focused he might have been at the time. To be fair, the alternative last year was that Mangini would stand up there, and talk about not executing, or tip his cap to the utterly amazing 5-8 team they just got cut to ribbons by. Whatever, to each his own.

Richie C. gives Rex high marks for the kabuki dance Rex did on Monday, saying that even though the media and fans might not be convinced, at least his players are … well … at least in front of the media.

No doubt, Ryan was speaking out of emotion – that’s the kind of guy he is – but he should’ve known better. It sent a bad message to his team and to the paying customers. He played the “tunnel vision” card Monday, claiming he was so focused on winning the final three games that he wasn’t paying attention to other teams and the various playoff scenarios.

Well, it’s part of the coach’s job to know. But Ryan let the crushing defeat get the best of him. In a way, it was like the end of the first Miami game, when he was so convinced his defense was going to stop the Dolphins on that final drive that he didn’t use any timeouts to give his offense a shot to regain the lead. It was a rookie mistake; he’s made a few.

Obviously, this latest faux pas touched a nerve – specifically, the perception that he was giving up on the season with two games to go. No coach, regardless of sport, wants his name attached to the word “surrender.” True to his nature, Ryan came out fighting in an attempt to clean up his mess. And he did a nice job, to be quite honest.

Emotionally, he tends to be all over the map. It’s one of his faults, but it’s also one of his strengths as a coach. You know what? His players bought it.

Jim Leonhard, spoke on the subject saying

“The first thing he said in the meeting was, ‘I said something to the media [Sunday] that was dead wrong,’ ” safety Jim Leonhard said.

“He said, ‘No. 1, I shouldn’t have said it, and No. 2, it wasn’t true.

“He went over the situation to show that we have a legitimate chance of doing this if we take care of what we need to take care of. A lot of things need to happen, but it’s not crazy. We’re not just dreaming here. Hope is definitely still alive.”

But how long will this non-dream last? Good for his players, I guess it will keep them engaged as they continue to pick up their gameday checks for the next two weeks. I love Rex, don’t get me wrong, but this whole depressed to angry Rex is a little comical. I mean, seriously, going from we suck we’re dead to Rexy don’t take no prisoners! in one day is a bit extreme, even for most Jets fans.

So what’s the road to the playoffs that has Rex and his team so hopeful? Take it away eggheads over at the Grey Lady!

The Jets’ hopes can be boiled down to these requirements,

1) They win their final two games at Indianapolis and vs. Cincinnati.
2) Miami loses one of its two remaining games (vs. Houston or vs. Pittsburgh).
3) Jacksonville loses one of its last two (at New England or at Cleveland).
4) Denver loses one of its last two (at Philadelphia or vs. Kansas City).

If these results occur, the Jets will get one of the two-wild card spots regardless of what Baltimore does.

To me, this reminds me of the scene in Ocean’s Eleven when they explain breaking into the vault. It sound easy when you say it calmly and without context, but the fact is that this is a Herculean task.

The truth is, that the Jets are terrible against good and even middling teams. For the Jets to get into the playoffs, they still have to beat two teams who have winning records. Here’s how the Jets stack up against teams with winning/tied/losing records:

Winning: 1-2
Tied: 2-4
Losing: 4-1

To me, it looks like the Jets are the bully who can beat up on kids half their age. They’ve not fared well against average and above teams, so to expect them to snake out two against teams that they aren’t even .500 against sure seems like a tall feat. This year has been fun, it’s been terrible, above all it’s been entertaining. With that said, I’m glad Ryan still has the attention of his players, but I got off after the Bills loss, and I’m not getting back on this roller coaster and hoping that the outcome will be any different than it already has been.

I am confused on the problem here??

The guy thought we were out and was angry about the loss. So what?

I bet every player thought the same thing as they walked off the field.

I dont need my coach knowing what happeneds if we win or lose the games in December. I want him coaching to win every game

All this tells me is Rex cares about winning and only cares about my team on Sundays…not worrying about tie-breakers and conference records…especially after a crushing defeat

  2. avatar Jibes says:

Bottom line: We’re alive going into Sunday which is more than we could say in many seasons past. It’s a hell of lot better than the alternative. Let’s kick some Indy ass!

  3. avatar deevee says:

I dont even care about the playoffs.
I will trade in Sanchez advancing as a QB for a 1st round playoff exit any day.

Let’s just take these next 2 games and let Mark play some football. Air it out, throw 15 INTs if you must… Get it out of your system before training camp.

Maybe the key with this kid is having a relaxed approach and let him just play and not spoon feeding him on every instance of the game.
Let him learn it on his own.

  4. avatar kd bart says:

In that way , the Jets are no different than their across the Meadowlands brethren.

    The Giants are:

    Winning: 2-6 (Both Dallas)

    Tied: 1-0

    Losing: 5-0

The strange one is the Steelers:

    W: 4-3

    T: 1-0

    L: 2-4

  5. avatar Jeff says:

I guess Ryan needs to lay off the pipe. his mood swings are really confusing me.

  6. avatar J-Kay says:

From what I’ve gathered in addition to the playoff scenario posted, if the Ravens lose a game, either Jacksonville or Denver don’t need to lose. We only need 2 losses between the 3 teams.

  7. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

Well, Rex is doing what i see on these message boards every week..

He’s just as high and low as we are with this team..

After a loss, he’s candid.. speaks his mind, reveals his frustrations.. (as do many of us).. A lot of us fans were feeling the same way (no way we’re in)..

A day goes by, emotions cool.. logic kicks in.. We still have a shot.. And he’s getting our team ready to go to work Sunday..

I’d rather “roller-coaster” Rex than Eric the Robot anyday..
    Another non-issue.

Also, this guy gives fans and media what they want: A candid look into what’s on his mind.. He’s the only one.. and he still gets ripped for it.. My opinion, no matter who you are, what you’re about, people are still going to dissect it, good or bad.. that’s unfortunate.

  8. avatar Latinlawyer says:

    Two words: CRACK PIPE!

We just lost the easiet of the three remaining games…now we want to go into INDY and defeat an UNBEATEN team and then follow that up with a win at home against one of the top defenses (Cincy)?!!?!?

Please put down the pipe and lets just enjoy the last two games…don’t mention the P word.

If by some miracle they get in…it will be much sweeter if we just ignore it for now.

  9. avatar Ed L says:

oh jesus…the media makes such a big deal out of nothing…rex probably wanted to kill someone after the game sunday and hell most of the players probably felt the same way….

it is also important to point out that the broncos game didnt even happen yet when that presser took place…..

i would rather have a coach that doesnt give a s*** about who has to lose for them to get in the playoffs…its all about the game and winning that game….

i hate the ny media with such a passion…if he was my coach i wouldnt care what he said because i would have felt the same way coming off the field after i just embarrased myself on it…..

but then again athletes mentality vs media mentality

  10. avatar bozzie says:

There is no denying the fact that Rex was upset in his post game interview…What gets me is I am a diehard fan and I was more upset then the players walking off the field. They just endured a crushing defeat after leading for 3+ quarters and they were laughing and joking coming off the field. My thought at that moment is these players do not care and have the passion as us diehard fans do…they are in it for the money! I was livid and so pissed off over our lackluster play verses Atlanta along with our VANILLA offense!!

  11. avatar WOJF says:

Never mind those issues, I am certain he thought Denver had won (which would have eliminated them, I think), they were winning when he left the field.

I want to know if anyone asked him why he did not go for it on fourth and goal from the one?

Rich C also mentioned that Cavanaugh and Sanchez got into it on the sidelines a little, would be interesting to learn some more about that.

But instead everyone is worried about his premature, but logical at the time, announcement that they were eliminated.

No harm no foul in my book.

  12. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

    bozzie

I’m with u bud..I saw Tony Richardson yucking it up and laughing with one of the falcons after the loss.

  13. avatar Shamik says:

I was perfectly fine with what I heard on Sunday. Thats exactly how I want to see the coach and players. I want them to be as shocked and hurt as I am. It lets us know that they care as much about this team as we all do. Its better than just standing there time and time again after a dreadful game and offering the same tired platitudes that we saw in years past and that we see from every damn press conference from the Mets.

  14. avatar bozzie says:

Oh absolutely! ..and that just gets under my skin! When the Jets lose, it affects my whole week (I know I probably need help) but the players didn’t even take 5 minutes to mourn before starting to laugh and joke while walking off the field!!!

  15. avatar Ferraro41 says:

Ed L…totally agree with you. I don’t see what the big deal is, or why anyone needs to get their panties in a twist over Ryan not know all of the playoff scenarios. Who gives a crap? I mean, really, what does it really matter?

And for the record Bassett, I don’t recall Rex ever even remotely implying that he thought the Jets “sucked”. He was clearly disappointed and clearly felt the team needed to get better, but I think you are over-reacting just a tad.

  16. avatar Dmazz says:

Dearth just messed up his chances at snapping in 2010

  17. avatar subwayfare says:

Yeah, I don’t get the hoopla. He had the whole organization buying into the idea that they had to win out to get in, the most likely reality, and he was down when they lost another heartbreaker that seemed like it would eliminate them. Should he have waited to check with the mathematicians before saying that? Sure, but it’s not like he was saying they’d already forfeited the last two games and were packing for home. I expect he would have found a way to get the team to play hard for the remaining games even if they were out of the playoffs. I haven’t seen the team fail to play hard under this coach yet. He’s made mistakes, but I think the demonstrative emotional commitment the guy has to winning does far more good than harm.

  18. avatar Brendan says:

    Bozzie,

These guys aren’t fans, they’re players. If they let their lives be consumed by every game, they would stress themselves into early graves. There are only a few players in sports history that were that competitive, that their wins/losses stuck with them for days/weeks after-the-fact. Jordan was like this. So is Rex, believe it or not.

And the team was certainly pissed. Rhodes had a obscenity-laden tirade about how all the teams they needed to lose, lost, but they couldn’t capitalize. I think your assessment that these players don’t care is way off base. If they didn’t care I doubt Mangold and Moore would sprint 15 yards downfield and steamroll defenders trying to beat up on the ball carrier.

  19. avatar starz31 says:

If we lose out fine…I just want to play well…stopping shooting ourselves in the foot. Play hard…Play smart. And I’ll be happy with whatever happens. (although if we win and play like crap, maybe ill deal with that haha)

but seriously. This is all we can ask for. Nobody said it would be easy. We get to watch an entertaining, intense game this Sunday. Can’t ask for anything better than that.

put em’ in a body bag..Rex

  20. avatar steviek says:

hey, Mozart was a manic depressive too.

personally, i am much more concerned about why a coach known for defense doesnt have a team that can execute a zone properly on an absolutely critical play (coming off a 3 minute tv timeout bty, plenty of time to review things) than knowing all the playoff permutations. both are problems though.

Bassett is right, its a sort of a poker tell that Rex has some issues. old nfl thing, there are many coaches that are great motivators or great x & o’s guys, but its really tough to find both.

    Herm II?

  21. avatar Will says:

    Stranger things have happened.

Just heard Merril Hodge on ESPN talking about how his Steelers team made the playoffs one year because 5 teams lost home games in the last week on Sunday and another lost on Monday Night Football.

I actually think we may get the help. Eagles will beat Denver, New England will beat JVille and I could see Miami losing one of two beacuse they are just as inconsistant as we are.

The thing I have a tough time seeing us do is beating Indy or Cincy. Maybe we can take advantage of teams with nothing to play for who are resting people, but who knows.

    But, stranger things have happened.

  22. avatar brian311 says:

bottom line – you can look at rex’s track record and that is proof enough that he is not a quitter

take the 2007 ravens, who were having a terrible season and playing the undefeated pats late in the year. the ravens gave everything they had that game, and actually would have won if not for some dubious calls late in the game against them

i think it was completely unfair for him to get raked through the coals by his statements on sunday. he thought one of thier goals was unattainable, and that is obviously a tough pill to swallow right after the game.

i do not expect the team to prepare any differently based on any of this it is just fodder for newspaper articles

  23. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Give Leon The Damn Ball, Bozzie, Brendan etc…

I am usually not all that upset with the players chatting after a game but I have to admit that the T-Rich smiling ear to ear after that loss did effing annoy me….

I would like to see more players just mad and angry like my coach fater a game.

its why i like and give rex a pass for his emotions… its not much different than mine

  24. Funny thing is, in 2002, I got off (that sounds bad somehow!) after the game when Chrebet got upended and fumbled at the the end – was that Cleveland? And look what happened that year, so you never know. At the end of the day, I find it more fun to care than not to care, so why not stay on the ride, however unlikely?

  25. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Once again my Yankees can bring a smile to my face… even when my Jets let me down a little…..I can always count on my Bombers..

Melky for Vasquez…… not bad for a 4th starter

  26. avatar Brendan says:

    NYCPE,

I am pretty sure that was the Bears game that we lost this same week that year.

  27. avatar John Z says:

Seriously, doesn’t bother me at all that Rex was bumbed after the game. He should have been. I was. I even knew that everybody else was loasing too, and I was still pissed. We had a chance to get a leg up, and didn’t. Still, the season’s not over and there’s less sense in giving up while the show’s still running.

  28. avatar Zeke says:

I think Rex drove down to Isabella Ave. in Newark and picked up an eighth.

  29. avatar Brendan says:

    Drew,

Because Vazquez’s first tenure in NY went so swimmingly? I guess 14-10 with a 4.91 ERA is a great 4th starter for an all-star team lineup.

  30. avatar steviek says:

i’ve got a pretty big misery bank account with this team (pretty much every game since 1974).

as a jets fan, i’ve learned to figure out the most brutal scenario and set the bar from there.

to me that would be beat the colts on the road, have every game go your way this weekend, control your destiny….. and lose to the bengals.

i’d dont think it’ll happen that way, but….

  31. avatar Shamik says:

I’d rather the players take every win and loss as hard as the fans do. The best ones always have. Look at Jordan, he used any slight as fuel. Roger Federer has titles and championships coming out the wazzoo but he’s still sobbing when he loses. Thats why they’re the best in the world. Players that are wandering around joking after such a devastating loss will NEVER be able to elevate their games to such championship levels.

  32. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Brendan

Thats all we need as a 4th.. plus we keep Joba in the pen.

Dont think for a second that a new LF wont be coming soon either

BTW are the Mets sleeping this offseason?

  33. avatar Shamik says:

Stevie, I would actually bet money that is EXACTLY what would happen.

  34. avatar AKA...Drew says:

As to the players after the game…even though i was pissed at T-Rich for loving it up after the game with the players that just ruined my Christmas…I just try and seperate the fans and players…even though its gets very hard to understand how they arent more upset by what just happened

  35. avatar starz31 says:

Its a great move for the yanks…im a mets fan too. Giving up a 4th OF for a very quality #3 SP coming off a great year. He was supposed to be the ace his first time here. He’ll be an above-average #3 for that team.

  36. avatar Brendan says:

The Mets are currently throwing darts at dart boards to pick the player, years & dollar figure of contracts they’re offering. Either that or their strategy for cornering the market on “old catchers with diminishing skills” better turn up huge dividends.

I think they resign Damon. The Yankees can’t keep spending like they have been, their investors want them to curb their expenses and reap the profits of winning the World Series.

  37. avatar WIlcoNYC says:

None of these scenarios are implausible. I mean if I was a betting man I would pick Philly to beat Den and NE to beat Jacksonville and Miami to lose 1 of their next 2. Straight up I would take those bets.

Now the Jets beating Indy and Cincy is another matter. BUT THE JETS WOULD HAVE HAD TO DO THAT ANYWAY! even if we won this week against Atlanta.

And I like that my coach is pissed off after losing a heartbreaker and reacts emotionally. Its about time. Im sick of these coaches where everything is mannered.

Just win. Ryan’s post game press conferences have no bearing on what happens on Sunday. Practice matters, execution matters. You think Sanchez is going to throw 3 extra picks because Rex thought they werent going to the playoffs? Is the D going to mail it in against the best Offense in football because of this?

Its a media creation as usual. An opportunity for the press to jump on an issue when there is nothing else to report.

  38. avatar TOON2388 says:

if this year is all about Sanchez “growing and learning” then let’s get the hell in there, and get him in front of a hostile crowd in January in Cincy or Foxboro

  39. avatar reality jet fan says:

I cant believe noone warned sanchez or ryan what would happen if the came to the new york jets.

  40. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Dearth will not lose his 10 year tenure as long snapper in 2010 over that snap. It was a teeny bit on Clemens shoulder, but certainly no worse than most snaps. Clemens had plenty of time to get it down — it was CLOSER than an extra point. Watch the replay, Clemens merely fumbled during the transition. Dearth was almost faultless.

  41. avatar brian311 says:

it was the high snap on the 37 yarder that set rex off. the snap on the chip shot was perfect and that was on KC

KC needs to realize that on a chip shot, even if you mishandle the snap, there is probably time to get it down. any kicker can make that kick standing flat footed.

  42. avatar Dave says:

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Not sure what’s funnier, Rex Ryan being Rex Ryan or the jokes in the media trying to spin things around into a direction of doom and negativity.

  43. avatar Joe B. says:

I also don’t see the problem. He was pissed off and dejected like we were and said something inaccurate. Big deal.

In true Jets fashion though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them beat the Colts, get help and then lose to Cinci at home. Tell me that doesn’t sound familiar.

  44. avatar TOON2388 says:

Joe B – I am BANKING on that happening; and so is Vegas with their “please step up to the window and bet the Colts, line is 5.5, all they have to do is beat the pathetic JETS by 7 and you win.” we will beat Indy. If Denver, Mia, & Jax lose we control our own destiny. am I correct?

  45. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

Rex and Me hung out sunday night. I changed his mind.

    it was chill.

Ya’ll need to get off the dudes back, and the players back. Remember , this is their job, and some people deal with defeat better then others.

  46. avatar WIlcoNYC says:

    Toon, you are correct

  47. avatar Handsomelad says:

Kudos for the Modest Mouse quote, Basset.

    Good stuff.

  48. avatar reality jet fan says:

Doom and negativity that is the new york jets!

  49. avatar reality jet fan says:

Rex ryan has done an ok job. But i dont get the blind loyalty and the fact that noone hold him responsible for anything.

  50. avatar reality jet fan says:

Beat the colts! What are you people watching. They have no chance if starters play.

  51. avatar greg sec 130 says:

thanks for that detailed analysis based purely on hate!

  52. avatar greg sec 130 says:

Actually, one of those teams can win if the Ravens lose to the Steelers.

  53. avatar reality jet fan says:

Im sorry but i remember when mangini went 10 and 6 i was so happy and said we are set at hc. And i was wrong! Just think some caution would be nice.

  54. avatar reality jet fan says:

Its amazing if a jet fan is 100 percent negative that is terrible. Even though this team gives a fan nothining to be positive about. But blind optimism is the way to be.

  55. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

Its amazing to me, that people who are always negitive and always complain about the team, even call themselves fans.

When your a fan, you support the team. NOT b*tch about them all the damn time.

  56. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

It is always amazing that the fans who are always negative can never find anything other then negatives about the team.

Lets not point out that everyone thought we would win 4 games this year, but we are 7-7. Lets no forget we have a whole new system with a brand new coach and we are number 1 in defense and number 1 rushing.

Lets not forgot we have a rookie QB who is puttin up the same numbers as other rookie Qbs while having him throw the ball 50% more then any other rookie QB in the last decade. Who only started 16 college games and has to learn a new system himself this year.

Lets not point out that we lost our 3rd best defensive player, and our ROOKIE QBs security blanket, and best offensives weapon.

We will just complain about Sanchez’s picks and our D giving up 10 points to a NFL team.

  57. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

We wont. bring up that we have a great young core, who will only get better we have about 15 players who are 27 and under who are making an impact this year.

We wont bring up that we finally have a coach that players LOVE to play for.

We wont bring up that we finally have some national spotlight and aren’t the joke of the league anymore.

We wont bring up that these players actually take pride in being a Jet for the first time in years.

We wont bring up that in our Rookie HC and Rookie QBs first year, we still have a shot at the playoffs.

We wont bring up that we clearly have the best line in the league.

We wont bring up that the oldest age on our entire defense is only 32. Yet we are by far the best D in the league without our best d lineman.

We will just pick on our HC for having pride and love for this team, and our ROOKIE QB who has an OC who doesn’t know he is a rookie.

  58. avatar Brendan says:

    RJF,

top ranked defense, one of the top rushing attacks, and a legitimate future now that we have a franchise QB. GOOD GOD HOW DO WE NOT KEEP FROM LEAPING OFF THE TOP OF GIANTS STADIUM!?

No one said you can’t be negative, but you’re always negative. It’s not foolish and doesn’t imply I drink the kool-aid because I (or any other optimistic Jets fan) decides to look for silver linings. I can criticize this team just as often as I praise it, but what good will that do? All the negative energy that the negative Jets fans bring to the team do nothing but bring about bad karma. Yeah, we lost, we also had another great day defensively. We also sucked on special teams and our running game was awful (see? positive and negative). It’s not all hellfire and brimstone because the Jets lost a game.

  59. avatar Old Rich says:

    Brian,

This would have been a good caption contest. Like–”I’ve had it up to here, but I’m still smiling.”

  60. avatar reality jet fan says:

I would love 7 and 7 if we didnt have the number 1 (overranked) d and number 1 rushing o. I was getting positive with the 3 wins in a row and i never would have killed this team and coach if they lost to the colts and bengals. But they didnt they did what the jets do they ripped our hearts out once again in a new way. And at home to an inferior team. The giants had a must win game on the road and took care of business.

  61. avatar reality jet fan says:

As i have said i didnt start out as a negative fan. They made me.

    RJF,

The ‘Skins are one of the worst teams in football, whoopty doo the Giants beat them. The only team with a winning record they’ve beaten is the Cowboys, so toot their horn all you want, it’s falling on deaf ears.

The Steelers lost to the Raiders-Browns-Chiefs trifecta. And who says Atlanta is inferior? They were in the playoffs last year while we sat home. And now we sit with the same record. You make it seem like we lost to the Rams.

If you want to get technical, our rush offense is overrated as well. But that isn’t to say that both our defense and rushing offense aren’t still at the tops in the league. We’re very good in both of those regards, we just need to get better in certain areas (some of which can only be brought about by time and patience, something Jets fans have on short supply).

No one can make you negative but yourself, and all the optimistic Jets fans have been through the same losing that you have, and yet we choose not to take your approach.

What’s the point on being negative now when they still have a chance? For what, what’s the point? I bet if we win these next two games you wil be back to “drinking the kool aid” and if they make the playoffs and they lose the first game you will probably bash this team even more…its ridiculous, what’s the point of being a fan if you can’t support them when things don’t go our way, but when things do you are at a ultimate high…this team in not perfect, as a matter of fact no team is perfect, look at the patriots 2 years ago…every team has their ups and downs and this team is having a rollercoaster season, (with a rookie hc and qb) but with more downs than ups…we need to be supportive no matter what, this team is destined for greatness in the near future!

With any luck–any–next year could be special.Leon and Big Jenx back. A year under Sanchez’ belt. Hopefully Edwards stays. Another year for the O line to be together. The LBs and DBs are fine. Keep TJ. Another draft and maybe an FA or two. Our division isn’t all that tough. We certainly need depth and some improvements, but there is strong reason for optimism.

I think Rex is a great coach. For those of you who don’t like him , go be a Browns fan for 2 games because that’s all Mangina has left before he is fired.

All Rex needs is the FO to can Schotty and all will be well.

One of the few sports radio personalities I enjoy oozing everything we feel after Sunday. It actually made me feel better knowing that others out there are as maniacal as me.

The Ryan thing is a non-issue. If anything he’s shown that he learns from his mistakes.

Yes, seeing something like T-Rich smiling is frustrating, but you have to put it in context- T-Rich has been a Jets for much less time than any of us, he might’ve been teammates/best friends w/ guys on the Falcons, and in the end it’s just a career for these guys.

Bart Scott is the type of player who runs on anger- he even joked about being glad to find out which team he’s supposed to hate now. As long as T-Rich gets it done, though, who cares when he smiles- life is too short to cry over lost football games.

One note, while we’re saying this, though- is Richardson overrated? I’ve seen him whiff or get beat a number of times, and can’t remember too many pancakes. He is rather old. Time to think about a young bruiser?
