Something will be brewing this offseason cocerning the running back position. First it was Chauncey Washington who was signed to the roster and now according to Adam Caplan, the Jets took a look at running back Chris Perry.
But with the offseason fast approaching, the Jets tried out former Bengals first-round pick Chris Perry Wednesday, according to Scout’s Adam Caplan.
Perry, who turns 28 Sunday, has spent this year out of the NFL. He has had previous tryouts with the Chiefs and Redskins.
In the famous words of Kenan, “Why!?”
As Thomas Jones contiunes to defy his age as the article goes on to mention it would seem that he’ll at least be in the Green and White for another year. Shonn Greene is slowly developing but hopefully shying away from his case of fumblitis. Meanwhile Chauncey Washington who was thought to contribute on special teams hasn’t done a thing since his arrival. And I would hope Leon Washington is back on the roster by 2010.
So where exactly does Perry fit in the picture? I can only think that maybe Perry was brought in to get some intel on the Bengals or the Jets really aren’t all that comfortable with Greene and Washington right now. I guess we’ll find out much more in the new year …

dave – completely disagree.

Maybe. just maybe. We want to have a running attack that is headed by TJ, Washington, Greene, Perry, Spiller, and Washington.

jameson,
In a word? No. We don’t have the roster space to carry 6 RB’s. And why would we draft rb’s in the draft in back-to-back years?

I agree that we don’t need another RB, especially a former bust like Perry, but I love the Kenan and Kel reference. Classic.

One thing I remember about Perry coming out of college was that he was an EXCELLENT receiver out of the backfield. That’s not even hyperbole. I think the ****ty thing is, though, is that his hands and route running skills (for a RB) are pretty much the only good thing about the overall package. He’s injury prone, not very fast, runs upright, not particularly strong, etc…

I was really surprised Perry wasn’t better out of college. He was a horse at running back at Michigan, had great hands and was really well developed as a blocker compared to other running backs out of college.

Jones is due a 3 million roster bonus in March, and 2.8 in salary. The jets are trying to create a littl e leverage. No team is gonna pay 5.8 for Thomas Jones, the Jets will give him the best deal, but it will be under 4 million..

1. Don’t you guys think that the Jets are monitoring Leon’s recovery. Think their looking at RB may be an indicator?
2. Dave is correct. TJ gets Kudos for not fumbling, being strong, picking up blitzes, and being a good guy. But his ypc are the lowest of the four RB on this team. Looking at other RB, esp former #1 picks who may have been working like a dog to get back into the league makes a lot of sense. it is not like we have Chris Johnson as our RB.
3. JetOrange’s supposition makes sense given how Tanny has tried to save money.

“or the Jets aren’t all that comfortable with Greene & Washington right now” Give me a break. These reporters will try to stir up anything to write a story. Greene & Washinton will be around for a long time. What’s wrong with looking at everything and, or anyone that may or may not help your team in the future.

if the jets want to look at former michigan rb’s they should wait for indy to cut mike hart again. he’s been cut 3 times – mainly b/c the colts o is not dependant on rb’s and there are 2 stars in front of him in addai and rhodes – and he much better than perry ever was. but to everyone’s point, i don’t think the jets need a 6th rb right now.

They are doing what they should be doing. With the Leon injury and the TJ contract situations, who knows what is going to happen in the offseason. The Jets know that and are exploring their options.

C Perry has a major fumbling problem and refuses to stay healthy….
He fumbled at UM and fumbled and couldnt stay healthy enough to stay on an NFL roster

Harlan,
TJ’s YPC are the lowest because he’s the starter. Greene comes in to face an already worn-down defense most of the time. Woodhead has a handful of carries. It’s pretty much TJ running into brick walls on first/second down and churning out 3-4 yards against 8 man fronts.

Brendan,
Here is some corrective information:
Chris Johnson, starter, 5.75 ypc
Ray Rice, starter, 5.35
Frank Gore, 5.29
Steve Jackson, starter, 4.48
Jones Drew, starter 4.48TJ, starter, 4.32
TJ is ranked 13th in DYAR means a running back with more total value but only 26th in DVOA means a running back with more value per play.
TJ’s ypc are down because he is not an elite back. He is a solid, average back. No more.
Harlan

Because Thomas Jones despite being incredibly durable and reliable is an actual runner of very average ability.
