Link: Revis Climbing in the Standings for DPOY?

by Bassett on December 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Len Pasquarelli writes that the DPOY award will be an interesting race and highlights Darrelle Revis as one of the league’s top two candidates with Charles Woodson, potentially the first time that a corner might win it since Deion on 1994.

But the terrific 2009 performances of cornerbacks Charles Woodson of Green Bay and Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets, along with a few others, have certainly elevated what was already a pretty high-profile spot.

“He’s the best guy I’ve faced this year,” Atlanta wide receiver Roddy White said of Revis following the Falcons’ 10-7 victory on Sunday. “He’s always around you. He’s like a gnat. He never gets away from you.”

In just his third NFL season, Revis has lined up (predominantly man-to-man) against standout wide receivers like White, Andre Johnson (Houston), Steve Smith (Carolina), Randy Moss (New England), Marques Colston (New Orleans) and Terrell Owens (Buffalo), and has surrendered only 36 catches for 212 yards. But the 2007 first-round pick, who may have supplanted Denver’s Champ Bailey as the NFL’s premier cornerback, faces stiff competition for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

It’s going to be an interesting race. Len puts him as at 4:1 odds with Woodson sitting at 5:2. I think because of the Jets playoff situation, it’s going to be harder for Revis to get the same national pub, but I (biasedly) think that Revis deserves it. If he can shut down Reggie Wayne this weekend, that will go a long way.

Here’s to hoping RelleRev has 3 INTs in each of the last two games to cement it.

He faces a potential Hall of Fame WR and a Hall of Fame QB this week, and a Pro Bowl QB and WR combo next week.

Both games should go a long way.

if he had made that play on the 3rd and goal last week, he would have been a lock.

i still think he has a great chance. if he doesnt give up big days to wayne and ocho, adds in another handful of PDs, and maybe 1 or 2 more INTs i think that would do it. of course, having the jets win out would help him just as much, if not more

If they make the Playoffs = Yes. If they miss out = No.

That’s a prediction, not what should happen. I’ve been saying the same thing for weeks!

From your keyboard to God’s eyes Bassett!

I agree with what Bent said about him winning it if they make the playoffs.

I also agree that he should win it whether or not the team does, because I can’t think of a season like his in my life, where a CB faced the top competition at WR for the entire season (really only getting a few breaks along the way) and dominating the opposition. It’s incredible.

  6. avatar JesusRevis says:

Revis is the best defensive player in the NFL this year. I dont think its arguable.

that being said, he wont win the award

  7. I agree with Bent, playoffs lead to DPOY

Wouldn’t it be something if the DPOY doesn’t get the start in the Pro Bowl???!!!!!???

I tried to start a chant at the game last week: D P O Y
—but, it doesn’t have the same ring as M V P

“…who may have supplanted Champ Bailey as the league’s premier cornerback…”

Wow, talk about living in the past.

  9. avatar alex says:

Is he supposed to win the award? Absolutely…if the DT from Nebraska can win the AP Player of the Year, how is Revis any less dominant or important to his team and defense?
Problem is Charles Woodson is a known commodity to a casual fan and Revis is just beginning to enter the casual fan scene.
Revis will win one of two ways, – incredible numbers last two games, I’m talking about 3 interceptions and a FF and a TD type. Or shutdown game with no visible highlights and two jets wins. Otherwise NO chance.

P.S woodson was the most overrated player in college football and not much has changed sadly.

didnt brees win OPOY award for an 8-8 saints team? i think the argument that the revis’ only chance to win the award is if the jets make the playoffs is ridiculous.

the bottom line is that along with his impressive resume this season, he is the most important and best player on the best defensive team in the league. if he continues his stellar play the last two weeks of the regular season, then i think he deserves it and ultimately wins it.

  11. avatar Zartan says:

If he shuts down Reggie Wayne and Chad and don’t win, Im burning down Gudells door.

  12. avatar SackDance99 says:

Three players this decade have won DPOY without their teams making the playoffs:

    2001-Strahan (team record: 7-9)

    2004-Ed Reed (team record: 9-7)

    2006-Jason Taylor (team record: 6-10).

So, there’s plenty of precedent for Revis to get the DPOY even if the Jets don’t make the playoffs. However, since 1971, CBs have only won the award 4 times, the last being Deion in 1994. The four are Mel Blount, Lester Hayes, Rod Woodson and Deion. Blount and Hayes had, respectively, 11 and 13 INTs. Woodson was by 1993 recognized as being one of the best all-around CBs in NFL history (he had already been All-Pro 3 times and a Pro Bowler 4 times by then) and Deion returned 3 of his 6 INTs for TDs.

Revis has to hang his hat on his ungodly number of PDs because with 6 INTs and only 1 taken to the house, I’m not sure he has the type of INT numbers that would get him DPOY. And, Woodson has had a great season, he has more tackles, INTs, TDs and sacks than Revis. So, Woodson’s proponents do have a certain amount of stats on their side. I think Revis is the best cover corner in football, but INTs, especially INTs returned for TDs, are what voters would look for. Revis makes that game-saving INT on Sunday and his DPOY resume would have looked a lot better.

  13. avatar Bent says:

Yes, but those guys were all better established as stars than I believe Revis is right now and that’s why I think he needed them to make the postseason to get that exposure.

  14. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

Agreed, but if Revis were leading the NFL in INTs and had 3 taken to the house, he’d be a lock. I think that CBs are judged by INTs and Revis doesn’t have enough. Also, Deion and Rod Woodson were likely helped by the fact that they were also good return men. Not that I want Revis to return kicks, but it all adds up.

  15. avatar Bent says:

Agreed. And that’s wrong. If Revis focuses on jumping every route, he’ll probably get a couple more picks over the next few games and might secure the award, but he’d probably also give up more yards than he has all year. His shutting down of WRs should be the reason he wins, but like you say, those stats are less easily accessible.

  16. avatar cojetfan says:

I’m naming my next dog Revis.

  17. woodson is definantly a serious playmaker and can shut down anyone, but what i’ve seen is that he doesn’t always line up with the best receiver. they usually put him in zone coverage and line him up as a 3rd safety sometimes which gives him more opportunities to make plays. revis on the other hand is just killing anyone who he faces. i don’t have to tell you the list of elite WRs that he’s shut down but what i do have to say is that revis is very good at helping stop the run as well. he made some tackles in the back feild or right at the line of scrimmage on sunday. revis for D Y O P and lets make a run at the next noble peace prize cause he’s done more than obama has.

Didn’t plaxico embaress woodson a couple years ago? I’ve never seen revis schooled like woodson was!!! With that said, revis all the frigging wAy!!!
