woodson is definantly a serious playmaker and can shut down anyone, but what i've seen is that he doesn't always line up with the best receiver. they usually put him in zone coverage and line him up as a 3rd safety sometimes which gives him more opportunities to make plays. revis on the other hand is just killing anyone who he faces. i don't have to tell you the list of elite WRs that he's shut down but what i do have to say is that revis is very good at helping stop the run as well. he made some tackles in the back feild or right at the line of scrimmage on sunday. revis for D Y O P and lets make a run at the next noble peace prize cause he's done more than obama has.

Agreed. And that's wrong. If Revis focuses on jumping every route, he'll probably get a couple more picks over the next few games and might secure the award, but he'd probably also give up more yards than he has all year. His shutting down of WRs should be the reason he wins, but like you say, those stats are less easily accessible.

Bent,

Agreed, but if Revis were leading the NFL in INTs and had 3 taken to the house, he'd be a lock. I think that CBs are judged by INTs and Revis doesn't have enough. Also, Deion and Rod Woodson were likely helped by the fact that they were also good return men. Not that I want Revis to return kicks, but it all adds up.

Yes, but those guys were all better established as stars than I believe Revis is right now and that's why I think he needed them to make the postseason to get that exposure.

Three players this decade have won DPOY without their teams making the playoffs:

2001-Strahan (team record: 7-9)

2004-Ed Reed (team record: 9-7)

2006-Jason Taylor (team record: 6-10).

So, there's plenty of precedent for Revis to get the DPOY even if the Jets don't make the playoffs. However, since 1971, CBs have only won the award 4 times, the last being Deion in 1994. The four are Mel Blount, Lester Hayes, Rod Woodson and Deion. Blount and Hayes had, respectively, 11 and 13 INTs. Woodson was by 1993 recognized as being one of the best all-around CBs in NFL history (he had already been All-Pro 3 times and a Pro Bowler 4 times by then) and Deion returned 3 of his 6 INTs for TDs.

Revis has to hang his hat on his ungodly number of PDs because with 6 INTs and only 1 taken to the house, I'm not sure he has the type of INT numbers that would get him DPOY. And, Woodson has had a great season, he has more tackles, INTs, TDs and sacks than Revis. So, Woodson's proponents do have a certain amount of stats on their side. I think Revis is the best cover corner in football, but INTs, especially INTs returned for TDs, are what voters would look for. Revis makes that game-saving INT on Sunday and his DPOY resume would have looked a lot better.

didnt brees win OPOY award for an 8-8 saints team? i think the argument that the revis' only chance to win the award is if the jets make the playoffs is ridiculous.

the bottom line is that along with his impressive resume this season, he is the most important and best player on the best defensive team in the league. if he continues his stellar play the last two weeks of the regular season, then i think he deserves it and ultimately wins it.

Is he supposed to win the award? Absolutely...if the DT from Nebraska can win the AP Player of the Year, how is Revis any less dominant or important to his team and defense?
Problem is Charles Woodson is a known commodity to a casual fan and Revis is just beginning to enter the casual fan scene.
Revis will win one of two ways, - incredible numbers last two games, I'm talking about 3 interceptions and a FF and a TD type. Or shutdown game with no visible highlights and two jets wins. Otherwise NO chance.

P.S woodson was the most overrated player in college football and not much has changed sadly.
