The Colts Offense, a Matchup Advantage for the Jets?

by Bassett on December 24th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

We’re going to do some more in-depth analysis on this later, but as I start to think of the Colts and the Jets chances, there’s a few reasons to like this matchup.  I know, this is Pay-tron, this is Reggie Wayne, this is Dallas Clark.  These guys are 14-0 and show no signs of stopping their slaughter of the league this season … but still … could this be a good matchup for the Jets?

Colts Can’t Run — Right now, the Colts are averaging 3.7 yards per carry, that’s good enough for 30th in the league.  The Jets have shown that they can stop the run, with or without Kris Jenkins .. though with is of course better.  Although the Jets will likely yield more than the 3.7 the Colts are averaging this week, the Jets D  has to feel pretty good about putting two stops together to stall drives.

Even With That, Manning is Killing Secondaries — It’s mind-boggling that even without a running game, the Colts are still moving the ball.  Right now, the Colts are a league best 297.2 yards passing per game.  It’s clear that the Colts this year are relying very heavily on the passing game to move the ball, and they’re doing it. Which is where the Jets come in …

Unstoppable Force, Meet Immovable Object — The Jets are leading the league in defenses with 159.8  yards passing a game.  The next best unit is the Broncos, who are at 177.  Wow.  This could be a very entertaining chess match between this passing offense and passing defense.  Buckle your seatbelts.

Welcome to Revis Island — This could be his make or break game for the league at large as accepting him as the new crown prince of defensive backs.  Revis is going to have a tough challenge limiting Manning and Wayne, and the Colts might try some of what the Falcons proved to work by motioning Wayne around to get him away from Revis as much as possible … see if the Jets can counter that.

Manning is the best at play action.
We have to glue Revis to Wayne, Rhodes to Clark and Scott to Addai and I think we’ll be alright.

Hopefully we can get to Peyton early and often,if we do I do not see them leaving him in there long. I expect they know this is the game plan and will be prepared for it though.

Looking forward to seeing Revis and this D go against the Colts Offense. Who will be matched up with Dallas Clark Rhodes I assume? Lets not give them the open look like Gonzalez got.

    GO JETS !!!

they are going to play us the same way the played jacksonville…peyton is going to keep coming out there until they feel they have a good lead…the key is for us to match scores with them and get some timely stops on their offense and also convert those into points…field goals are ok this week but just not too many we want to make sure we get in the endzone as much as possible. But all things considered i think we have a great chance at knocking this team out and hopefully making the playoff. this kind of game can be a confidence booster for Mark i hope he has his greatest game as a pro to date…………got jets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good God! Rhodes on Clark!? …it’s all over…*throws up hands and leaves room*

He did a pretty good job on Gonzalez this week.

The Jets have a chance to regain some dignity here. Release the hounds, blitz often and look for Bart Scott to have a big day as Revis locks down the whole secondary! (too much eggnog tonight…) Merry Christmas all.

If Sanchez doesn’t give away the ball and ST doesn’t choke, It all boils down to two big tests for our D this week:

    1. Can Rhodes cover Dallas Clark?

    2. Can we hurry/hit/sack Peyton?

I think we all agree that Revis has the ability to shut down Reggie Wayne, but Dallas Clark is as big a weapon for the Colts as Welker is for the Pats. That means Kerry R has to bring his A game, and limit Clark. This is HUGE. If Rhodes flakes out and can’t cover and/or can’t tackle Clark, we’re fuuuuuuckhed.

But if we can disguise our blitz packages well enough to get to Peyton repeatedly, we have a shot. If you can hit, hurry & sack him, you can throw Manning’s timing off, and then he’s a completely different QB. He’s like Brady in this regard: this is the way you beat him: by getting to him
often enough that it disrupts his equilibrium. This is how the Giants beat Brady in the Super Bowl, it’s how the Jets have beaten Peyton in the past, and it’s how we can win this Sunday.

Manning is best QB I have seen in my lifetime, he passed Fouts 2 years ago. Need to send kitchen sink and force Caldwell to yank him; remember in ’93 when Seifert gave Young day off against Buddy’s Oiler D to spare him a beating? Definitely worth a rouhging call early in game.

even if the defense limits the Colts to 17 pts, which would be amazing… I see it being tough for us to score. revis and wayne, rhodes and clark, scott and addai… it doesn’t matter much if we only score 7 pts a la last week.

I think we have a chance – a slim one, which may depend on their taking Peyton out at some point. But the offense needs to put the ball in the endzone more than 7 points-worth and the defense needs to show their A-game for the entire game! They can’t play awesome and then give it up in the red zone, especially on the last opposing possession, which they have done to lose 7 games! They are the best defense, but they need to be the best on every single play. Leaving Gonzalez open in the middle last week was unforgivable, made all their great work the rest of the game worthless.

You guys are dreaming. Blitz Manning? Ask Rex Ryan how well that worked for his team when he was the Defensive Co-ordinator in Baltimore. The Ravens don’t even try to blitz the Colts anymore because Manning KILLS blitzes. So PLEASE, send the kitchen sink. The Colts will make you pay. The O-line protects Manning like he is their Grandmother. 10 sacks in 14 games. Blitzing means single man coverage. Do you really want to take the chance that Manning to Wayne/Clark/Garcon/Collie won’t work when your defensive secondary is trying single man coverage? And if someone is getting to close, Manning will “hot-read” Addai and he will stick you for a 12 yard gain. BTW, Addai may not have the best numbers, but believe me, the second half of the season, he has stabbed teams in the heart with daggers at the worst possible time. Your #1 run defense won’t be so good when everyone is playing pass and Addai runs for 6 or 7 on first down.

Go ahead and kick field goals. Manning will shove that strategy down your throats too as he hits for 7 again and again.

The only chance the Jets have is if Caldwell decides that he doesn’t want to go 16-0. If “gang green” can’t beat the Falcons, how in the world are they gonna beat the Colts, in OUR house no less. Joe Willie is retired!
