The Rundown: Playoffs?!
So, was the Colts’ decision to sit Peyton Manning the tide-turner in the game yesterday?
You’d have to think so. While I’m under no delusion to think that Peyton’s benching didn’t change the outcome of the game yesterday, the Jets acquitted themselves well with Peyton in the game, only traily by five points at the time of his exit. Rich Cimini was less kind to the Colts and their playoff plan.
Shame on the Colts for waving the white flag in the third quarter. It’s just bad form. It taints the integrity of the game. Can you imagine the outrage in Miami, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, et al? There’s only one way to validate that decision: The Colts have to win the Super Bowl. Anything less and history will remember them as a bunch of quitters.
Cynic much? Spare me the integrity of the game tripe. The Colts are 14-0 and have won enough games over the last ten years that they’ve found a formula that they think works for them best and their postseason chances. Secure homefield, rest the vets, and let everything else play out, other teams (and your own fans) be damned. Rex Ryan controlled himself as best he could in the postgame presser, saying that the Colts won the right to play that game however they wished, and he was right to say so. He was also right to not say that they were the best team, and that they deserved that victory by divine right. Something Cannizarro seems to think is the case.
It’s official now: The football gods are determined to deliver the Jets safely into the playoffs.
How else can you explain the unfathomable litany of events that have unfolded to leave the Jets with this unthinkably delicious scenario: Win and they’re in.”We feel like it’s got to be meant to be with all the breaks we’ve caught the last few weeks,” Jets safety Jim Leonhard said.
Hold on there, sparky. They still have to play the Bengals. A team who is going to the playoffs, and has yet to announce whether starters or backups will be playing. Meanwhile, we hear that Canny texted a friend yesterday that he expected a “Jets disaster” of historic proportions. My how the blind can see.
Personally, I’m less sure about how the Jets will respond Sunday, now with the big hill out of the way. The Colts were the 900 lb. gorilla between them and the playoffs. The Bengals have been a surprise team all year, so for anyone to think that the Jets are just going to win this game going away, hasn’t watched Sanchez close enough. Regardless of Carson Palmer playing, our own USC QB needs to make the right decisions that kept him out of the negative turnover column yesterday.

Its funny, because I see the Bengals as better version of us this year. They lean heavy on the run game and defense, like us. However our D is better, while their QB is much better. If ST and D can play above average, while offense stays consistent and doesn’t shoot itself in the foot, we have a great chance of winning.
I need a definitive answer on this guys. Is there anyway for the Jets to make the playoffs if they lose to Cincy? I think I heard somewhere that its either win or go home, but I’m not sure. I do like it better that way, but I’m just checking.
Welcome home Lauveraneaous!!!
however you spell his name
FOR ANY INDY FAN CRYING RIGHT NOW ( OR ANYONE ELSE)
2008 Week 17 Tennessee at Indianapolis Tennessee had already clinched #1 AFC Seed, a bye and homefield going into Week 17 Indianapolis needed to win make the playoffs and also clinch the #5 AFC seed Tennessee uses 3 different QBs including Chris Simms, Quinton Ganther is Titans leading rusher with 27 yards that game Indianapolis won 23-0.
NO WAY the Bengals play their starters. 1) they will no the outcome of the pats game and be the #4 seed before the game starts assuming ne beats houston. 2) with a possible rematch with the jets one week later (4 vs 5) there is no way cincy will show us their hand. 3). Its been an emotional roller coaster for that team, and coming off a lackluster performance against KC they will REST mentally and physically.
This leads to a repeat of 2002, the jets win and are in against the 2nd string bengals. We’ll open the playoffs at Cincy. The worst case scenario is bengals starters play the first half. And we just showed what we can do to backups in one half of play……
No matter what happens Sunday night, I just want the team to come out fired up and play hard all the way through. If they play inspired and lose, I can accept it. If they come out flat with everything in their hands, I’ll be sick.
Yesterday, we saw flashes of fire — despite his bad penalty, Bart Scott was playing hard. Ditto David Harris, Pouha and DeVito. Shonn Greene ignited the running game by slamming into people. I want to see that from all 45 guys on Sunday, everyone playing with heart and fire and reckless abandon. (Hear that Kerry Rhodes?) Play hard, play smart and leave it all on the field, and I can accept the outcome win or lose.
But if I see general lack of effort, coaching stupidity (listen up Schotty), mental miscues and a sense of “the playoffs are in the bag” (like the Giants mailed in yesterday) I will be sick for weeks.
If the team is as pumped as the crowd will be, they will be tough to beat.
The Dolphins and Jaguars cant complain. Had those 2 teams faced Curtis Painter and the Colts the way those 2 teams played yesterday, they wouldve lose. Not only that, the Jets could’ve not played like those 2 team yesterday. But instead, the Jets were able to keep it close.
In my opinion, none of these teams deserve to make the playoffs: Steelers, Jets, Dolphins, Jaguars, Texans and Broncos.
I’m late to the blog so this really doesn’t apply, but looking for feedback.
Why is it that on 3rd and short we empty the backfield and have Sanchez under center and not in the shotgun. Obviously it’s going to be a short quick pass probably a slant. If you’re going to do that, why not set him up in a shot gun or have someone in the backfield to pick up any blitzes. The percentages more often than not lead to a pass deflected or an extra rusher up the middle where Sanchez gets obliterated.
I absolutely hate that call!!!
I gotta say..I don’t think the breaks the jets got with other teams winning were THAT amazing. Eagles are one of the better NFC teams, so that’s no shock. Baltimore and the Steelers are bitter rivals, and the game was in Pittsburgh. I guess the most surprising is the Dolphins loosing at home to the Texans.
GO Jets!!!!!
When I heard about Win Or Go Home I was surprised I thought we needed some more people to lose.
Hopefully we can finally get it done at Home, The Last Game At The Meadowlands.
Rich in Albany…the Jets *have* to win to get in. Reason being is that Pittsburgh plays Miami next weekend. If Pittsburgh wins and the Jets and so do all of the other pretenders (baltimore, Denver and Jax), the Steelers would get in by virtue of a better record.
If the Dolphins won and the Jets lose, the Jets would lose the head to head tie breaker. So the Jets win or they go home one way or another.
Jetsfantasydefense, I was thinking the same thing while watching the game. PLUS it happens twice. So after the first time what did they not LEARN. NOT COOL MAN!
As far as the playoffs, I just happy the Jets can play a meaningful game this late in the season. Not sure they have the firepower to keep points on the board.
Hey Giants Fan, we’ll show you how to close out the stadium!
Oh TOPS2000, I wish you hadn’t written that last part…
I AM SO SICK OF THIS… its assumed by all these writers that if Peytton had stayed in the JETS would have lost. We were only down by FIVE with A LOT of time. We will never know!! Lets move on… !!!!
I hate this bull. All you can do is beat the teams on your schedule when they are on your schedule.
The Jets got their share of bad breaks this season, losing the core of the D line in Kris Jenkins, Leon’s broken leg in Oakland, the special teams fluke loss to Miami. Hard to say, “the football gods delivered,” the Jets anywhere when you look at the situation in the context of the whole year.
As for the Colts sitting Peyton? That’s Indy’s issue. The Jets have absolutely nothing to apologize for. Unless they don’t bring it with fire and brimstone next week.
“Can you imagine the outrage in Miami, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, et al?”
Because it’s absolutely the Colts fault that these teams didn’t win enough games to get into the playoffs on their own accord.
Cimini and Cannizaro can shove it. If Miami and Jacksonville were so wronged by the Colts sitting Manning and Co., maybe they should have shown up for a game themselves the last few weeks. Then they would have nothing to cry about. Maybe Miami should have beat Atlanta this year. Maybe Jacksonville shouldn’t have lost to Seattle by 41 points this year.
It’s called strength of schedule. No team has the same schedule and that is the luck of the draw. So the fact that the Jets got the Colts in week 16 is fortunate and is no different than the Broncos drawing Kansas City next week. You take what you are given and do the best you can to win more games than your opponents do.
Miami had the creamiest of cream puff schedules last year and won the division. Guess what. There was nothing we could do or say about it. This is the same thing.
And had the Jets lost the game against a back up QB in Indy, Cannizaro and Cimini would sit back and write how emarrassed the Jets ought to be for blowing a gift like that.
Screw ‘em. Let’s go beat Cincinnati.
Thanks Ferraro! It makes it simple…win or go home. (But what if the Steelers and the Dolphins tie? LOL! Don’t answer that!)
Dolphins may have beat us twice but they are an average team. They lost to a better team in Houston at their own field….they do not deserve to make the playoffs…Jacksonville also beat us but they played like absolute horsesh** when it mattered the most. No one should feel sorry for them at all…especially the Dolphins…can anyone besides a Miami fan actually root for this team ? They’re so unappealing and their style of play is so unattractive
Rich Cimini is very bitter for some strange reason. He gets zero love from the players and coaches, same goes for the insight. He had zero breaking news since Rex came in. If you remember his final 53 man roster guess was more like somebody who has very litle to do with football much less Jets. Don’t quote him any more. We have enough Haters. That kid Omi that takes his place is much more pleasant.
Yea Starburied,
completely agree. i just heard adam schefter and whoever the otehr espn anaylst was (dari nowkhah maybe?) talking about how theres outrage by fans in baltimore, denver, pittsburgh, miami, houston, etc… because the colts let the jets have it?
if those teams had won more games they wouldnt be in this situation. miami could hae beat the texans, jaxonville could have beat the pats, ravens dropped several wide open plays in the endzone against pitt is it the colts and jets fault for those as well? im sick of the excuse that the colts resting players impacted the entire nfl. the jets were still in the game, 15-10. who knows how it could have finished, the jets could have squeked one out. and what would have happened if the colts didnt rest their players and reggie wayne got nailed by bart scott on a slant? concussion, out for rest of the season. or if the jets got enough people on the line to give peyton pressure and someone fell and broke his foot? people would be outraged that caldwell didnt rest his players.
this happens every year. a team which can afford to rest their players does so while playing a team in playoff contention. usually there is no problem with it, however it seems so this year beause of the amount of teams involved int he mix. stop blaming the colts for other teams mistakes. one can look at the steelers and question how they lost 5 in a row especially one aginst the browns in pitt. or the jets and question how they lost 5/7 games in the final minute. nfl is unpredictable, i dont blame caldwell for protecting his players. it was his decision if he wanted to make HIS team go for a perfect season. I dont care if quadry ismail is disapointed, in the end he’s not the coach of the indianapolis colts, and hes not hte one who got them to a 14-0 record to begin with. i havent heard one analyst go out and defend caldwell’s decision. look at the past. the only team that actually DID go for it was the patriots, and at the end of week 17 there were still people questioning belichecks decision to keep brady in. sure, indianapolis could have gone for the perfect record, but the perfect record includes a superbowl victory. if peyton got injured then the quest for teh perfect season was gone anyway. in the end the colts are still healthy and good enough to be a top contender for the superbowl, which is the goal of every team heading into the regular season…not going perfect. by the way, if we saw anything after peyton came out, it as how much he meant to the colts and their franchise. he is arguably the most important player to any one team in teh entire nfl. had he gotten injured every analyst would be sporting the attitude “well a perfect season is tempting to pass up but caldwell should have done the wise decision and rested his players”
i hate analysts.
This was supposed to be a gimmee for the Colts. Hence, the pre-game decision to sit guys once into the 3rd Q — an easy call, actually.
However, while Indy was clearly the stronger team, the Jets were slugging toe-to-toe with them. 6 pts at Halftime. Then the KO return. PM had just enough time to make that drive and score before the hook would come for him. But it was only a 5-pt. game! Of course, he knew what kind of game they were actually in. He knew that! That’s why he looked so unhappy, IMHO. The Jets didn’t seem to get the memos that came out of the Colt team meetings last week.
While there were some individual bad plays vs. Manning on the Jets D’s part, they hung together as a unit. Plus, Manning had an off day, too, missing receivers and looking out of synch. Now, whether it was merely him having a bad day, or the force of the Jet D or some combination of the two, it matters not. The fact remains, the Jets were in a slug-fest with the best team in the league. And holding their own.
How cool.
The rest — the non-PM part — was just gravy.
Bassett, I completely disagree. Peyton and the boys deserved a shot a history. That is what they earned with their 14 wins. The cowardly coach risked them for over a half. What the F was he gaining pulling them so early?
This will cost the Colts. I will be shocked if they win a SB. And now, anything less is a failed season.
harlan
I wish that analysts and fans would stop stating that the “Colts” were clearly a stronger team.
Really? yes they were 14-0, but the way they played yesterday it wasn’t 100% clear. 15-10….Perhaps that’s why Manning had that frustrating look on his face.
This kinds talk fuels the media to take away credit when its due AND it will only continue if we get into the 2nd round of the playoffs.
Also, can we please keep people honest, here?
I’m sick and tired about the whole Jets ’sneaking backwards into contention somehow’ thing.
All ANY of these other teams have had to do over the last month and a half is WIN ONE MORE GAME! Period.
There are at least six teams out there, who, if they’d won just 1 MORE GAME earlier, would be sitting pretty and the Jets would be thinking about vacation plans.
But, NOOOOOO-ooooo-ooo… So, instead of this amazing, astonishing 6-team choke in the AFC, all anyone can talk about is: “the Jets????”
Puh-leeze!
harlan,
ultimatley the coach decides what to do, which is why he is called “the head of hte team”.
he led them to a 14-0, not you nor anyone else. therefore he should decide waht is best for the team, not you nor anyone else.
if they win the superbowl they still go down in history. if they went 18-0 and lost in the superbowl like hte patriots did they do not go down in history. simple as that. the goal is to win the sb, if they could have gone 16-0 easily w/o risking much then they would have done it, but thats not how it went down. the game is over, stop complaining.
I understand the criticism of the Colts decision to pull the starters. Personally, I think it cheapens the game a bit, regardless of how it would have turned out for the Jets. What I don’t get, however, are the people saying it made no sense to play the starters at all if they weren’t going to finish the game. Obviously, the plan was to get the first team enough action to keep them sharp for the playoffs, but pull them before a freak injury occurs. One may not agree with it, on principle, but to say it doesn’t even make sense doesn’t make sense.
No one is talking about the possibility of Peyton getting hurt if left in the game. The same people that are arguing that they should have played would be screaming bloody he’ll if Peyton went down. Same $hiz will be talked about next week. Jets are dammed if you do dammed if you don’t.
Also, since when is everyone a mind reader….
Yes the colts looked upset and frustrated, BUT was it because they were pulled?
or was it because they were slightly off that day allowing such a close game?
PM was slightly off targer, receivers weren’t catching they passes…
Common, it’s not so clear unless they state it publicly.
have to believe there are large portions of the “media experts” talking up the game as basically a lock for the jets, so that if they were to lose they can play up the disaster of epic proportions angle.
i’m sure fatcessa wouldnt mind.
it makes for a better story in a lot of ways and thats all they root for.
cimini really needs help…..the “integrity” arguement is the weakest one out there!!!
WTF CIMINI….
SORRY……
LIKE THE COLTS ARE SUPPOSED TO PLAY HARDER B/C THE GAME MATTERS TO OTHER TEAMS WHO NEED THE COLTS TO WIN WHAT THEY THINK IS A MEANINGLESS GAME???
would he make the same arguement if they were 13-1???? HMMMMM…
cimini really pushing it…..and he covers the team and he is always looking / writing the negatives….
klecko71,
That’s because Cimini is from the Hank/Naples & ED(itor) school of self-loathing Jets fanship.
I hope that we win next week AND we get to play INDY in the playoffs and beat them again. That would be awesome!!!
Upset in Pittsburgh!!!
You should be upset that your team loss to the Bears, Chiefs, Browns, and Raiders (at home) this season. That’s why you are where you are.
ha….good one. cant say i blame any jet fan for being negative though.
but if you are a journalist covering a team….use ur %$#@@ brain and make a good arguement.
the integrity of the game????? the colts earned the right by clinching the #1 seed after 14 weeks to do what they want….its part of the game.
will the bengals be crucified by cimini or anyone else for lack of integrity if they sit palmer for sunday….basically giving him and others a bye week before their playoff game???
such an ass…..
Bassett –
This post once again reinforces why you are one of the few voices of reason out there. While rest of the pundits are screaming either bloody murder or salvation, you’re actually making sense. Not that I’m a deadhead, but what a long, strange trip this has been.
Thanks,
MM
The Jets were playing hard enough so that if the Colts wanted the game (the record) they would have to play Manning and the starters the whole game.Taking Manning out did not only prove that the Colts do not have enough to compete with a playoff team, but also that his decision was right. What is a coach to do when all the essentials (home-field advantage) have been secured? Increase the risk that his MVP gets injured , with a chance (no guarantee )that he will win the game and repeat the same experiment next week? Or make sure that this risk is eliminated or reduced?
That is why Cimini is ….Cimini ,a mediocre writer who understands very little of how decisions are made in the coaching and managerial level. That is, decisions that maximize a teams chance for winning a super-bowl.
Yes James, I agree. That would be awesome.
I told the wife last night that IF the Jets make it to San Diego in the post season, we are taking a road trip to see the game.
Only way we get respect is to win a Superbowl.Point blank!!!
Everyone says we had no shot at the Colts and if Peyton Manning remained in the game they said we would have lost for sure.Especially Mike Fatcessa who continues in misery as his Giants were eliminated. The ESPN analyst on first take havent been hard on us but NBC wasnt to kind on us.Especially Dungy.(Who had no clue where we were playing next week.He thought we were playing in Cinci lol)Funny thing is Rodney Harrison picked us to win next week along with Teddy Brusci.Weird huh?
Back to Mike Francessa….He continues to make the story about the Giants and not the Jets.He even went as far as to say the last memory of Giants stadium will be the Giants blowout and stated how we are just visiters to Giants Stadium and a win doesnt count as a Giant Stadium moment…..
…My take on that makes me sick. How is it that we are the only team in the NFL that cant have a stadium to call our home.Just because it says Giants Stadium doesnt mean we dont split the memories at that stadium. We have had a ton of memories at that stadium as much as Giant fans.So to say that Giants Stadium is only the Giants Stadium is selfish.
Bottom Line: Cimini is crying over spilled milk.
The integrity issue was long gone..(Tuck Rule game). The other teams had opportunities to win games to get ahead and they didn’t.
Teams have lost to the Raiders, Browns, and have lost home games that they shouldn’t have…
Miami lost to the Texans at home. Ravens committed dumb penalties to lose at Pittsburgh, the Texans lost maddening games earlier in th eyear when they had leads, Denver should have locked up the playoffs but lost to the RAIDERS! Each team has a huge flaw…each team should have never been in the position of wishing for a Colts win. Now, they should shut up and play and leave the “Colts should’ve kept there starters in there” argument..it does them no good and the commish is not going to rewind the game scores…
If we win next week I can certainly see us beating them again wild card weekend. The team is physically and mentally banged up. Palmer and Benson are not 100%. The unfortunate death of teammate Chris Henry is still bothering them and don’t forget the death of the wife of their Defensive Coordinator earlier this year. My point is, the Bengals are a very beatable team, especially if we go into the playoffs hot. I understand that I shouldn’t look ahead but it’s not crazy to think that we may be playing San Diego 3 weeks from now.
Randy, you’re preaching to the choir brother. Fatsesca is a pompous jerk who thinks of himself as a sort-of Sports Pope. Anyone who disagrees with him is an idiot, anyone who agrees with him is right. And if you don’t like the Giants or Yankees than you’re wasting your time. Screw him.
The Jets better prepare for Cincy’s best, no matter what. All they need to do is watch the Giants-Panthers tape to see how easy it is to waltz into the playoffs against a team with nothing to gain.
peter king thinks its revis for DPOY:
Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, with six interceptions, a touchdown, and a league-high 31 passes defensed.
It’s hard to quantify defensive stats, but I like the way Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders thinks. He has built a database that illuminates some dark statistical positions. At cornerback, for instance, interceptions are often not the best measurement if the player is not being thrown at much. So Schatz keeps numbers on the other important stats for defensive backs — average yards allowed by team to No. 1 receivers (figuring that many corners will match up on the opposition’s best wideout), average yards-after-the-catch allowed to opposing No. 1 receivers, and, to measure physicality, run tackles by cornerbacks.
In average yards allowed to top receivers, the Jets lead the league by a wide margin at 30.5 yards per game — and that’s almost always been Revis’ man. Washington (43.6), San Diego (44.5), Philadelphia (45.5) and Green Bay (48.5) follow. In average yards-after-the-catch, the Jets are first, at 2.6 yards, followed by Indy (2.9), Philadelphia (3.1), Denver (3.1) and Cincinnati (3.2). Woodson is second in cornerback run tackles with 35, while Revis is eighth with 20.
It’ll probably be a close vote, but I’m leaning toward Revis. He’s been matched against Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Marques Colston, Steve Smith, Roddy White and Reggie Wayne a total of seven times, and he hasn’t allowed a 70-yard game. He’s been the definition of shutdown corner. He combines wily coverage with a physical presence, and, at 24, there’s not a young defensive player in football I’d take over him. Should be a good race.
I cant take all these fans saying we were givin a gift. lets be honest we prob would of lost if peyton stayed in but they were only up 5 u cant make that an automatic win for them. second of all all these fans for mia and jax should just shut up. we gave both of them gifts earlier in the season and they all had a chance to win yesterday and remain in control but they choked big time esp MIA so lets just take care of cinci sunday and hopefully again next week
I’m not too worried about the Bengals trapping us with the 2nd stringers to learn our playbook better for the playoff game
If we’re up a TD, keep it simple, just run the ball up the middle with SG and let TJ break it to the outside, with an occasional slant to Cotch/Bray and screen to Mr. Woody
I expect that last game at home to be a dogfight. Is there ever an easy game for the Jets that means anything (Except that blowout win at home against the Colts in the Playoffs…). I expect the game to be a nail biter. I don’t forsee the bengals pulling their players…if we win we will see them in Cincinnati…they want to make sure we are a bit bruised before our matchup.
on a different note, has anyone followed Chris Baker since he went to NE? I remember regretting that we didnt resign him, but not feeling so much regret right now. I havent heard much about him, though i havent been trying to, so im under the impression he hasnt made a difference there, and probably wouldnt have made a difference here…
thoughts?…
latinwayer,
Cincy has more to lose by playing an extremeley physical game. They are in the playoffs already, sure they can bruise the jets but they can bruise just as easily.
I have a defensive question: what is the point of playing zone? If you have good corners, when is it superior to putting a man on every guy? It seems to me that zone is a Madden thing and doesn’t translate to real life football.
I can’t tell if this guy is serious or not.
You cannot play man in real football for the whole game. There are routes in the game that take advantage of man (Drags, fly, Streak, etc.) In a zone you are looking to cover more field area. ALSO, if you have a mismatch (RB vs. LB), in man the mismatch is really apparent, in zone you can mask it more. You can also mix and match man and zone…
What the jets do at times is give Revis a Man matchup with zone help (over the top safety help).
Zone is valuable…just don’t play it on every down. A Cover Two is a good situational defense but some teams try to use it all the time…and get burned.
I was actually serious.. thanks for the explanation latinlawyer. My browser puts in the name automatically, which I used when I was mad at schotty yesterday for running that clowney reverse. My bad.
Fatcesca is now saying that things are “shady” with the way Cauldwell removed his players, and with the line dropping all day for that game, you don’t remove players because things look “fishy”.
My ears are starting to bleed.
Fatcessa loses credibilty by stirring up the “conspiracy” theories about yesterday’s game. the Colts have rested players in other years as well…its their Modus Operandi.
Look, if you are a Giant or Yank fan you will LOVE Fatcessa…if you are a Jet or Mets Fan you will HATE fatcessa. He is not objective and cannot/will not give praise to the “other” teams in NYC. Fatcessa has drove listeners away from WFAN to ESPN radio (although Michael Kay can be annoying too…he is a bit more objective…)
Oh shut up Cimini Who cares what the other teams think? How about they win the games their supposed to win then they dont have to worry about it.
pleaaaaaase fire Schotty before the weekend!!!!!!!!! Sanchez can coach himself and do better job!
Best Article to all the WHINERS from other teams:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/315413-cry-me-a-river-why-afc-teams-shouldnt-complain-about-colts-decision
I’m a Met/Jet fan and actually like Fatcessa. He’s not the most objective host, especially when he goes nuts bashing Mets ownership, but I’ve heard him grudgingly giving the mets/jets props when they really deserved it. In a way, it’s kind of satisfying listening to that. Benigo’s still my fave on the station though. Michael Kay can be unlistenable for me. He’s more full of himself than Francessa even.
anyone want charlie weiss as our offensive coordinator for next year?
There is one way to shut everybody up. We start by beating the bejesus out of Cincy at home. Then we take on whoever they throw at us, in the playoffs, and show the league what type of talent this team really has. Rex has to tell Schottenheimer that, if he sees any more double reverses, line of scrimmage passes, or empty backfields — he is going to get smacked in the head. Run, short passes, run, play-action, run. Mix it up and stay in control. And, when things are going smoothly — don’t mess with success. On defense, we need to bring the pressure from all angles. How nice would it be, to see Gholston get his first sack against Phillip Rivers in the playoffs. Buckle up your seat belts, Jet fans, this is going to be a wild ride.
Charlie Weiss to the jets is a non-starter…word is that he may be headed to KC or Cleveland or Oakland.
One look at the Indy backups and how awful they played should have convinced every fan and player in that stadium that it was the right move to sit the starters.. Everyone booing that kid is just a bad fan with no view of the big picture.. Imagine a broken Manning and a Colts team having to start that kid at QB in an actual playoff game?!? They wouldn’t have a chance of winning ANYTHING. They should have cheered the fact that they don’t HAVE to start those players and actually have GOOD healthy guys on the bench…. Dumb Indy fans…
I like Harvlis’ idea for keeping Schotty in line.
I’ll take the win, but let’s be realistic – the Colts gave it to us. If the Colts weren’t undefeated, I’d cut Caldwell some slack on it, although the year they won the Super Bowl they had to play out the season, they couldn’t rest. But there’s no excuse for giving up an undefeated season. They were 20 minutes away from winning yesterday and then have Buffalo this week. That was unforgivable, even if they win the Super Bowl. As a not-so-wise man once said, “You play to win the game.”
If you’re so worried about players getting injured, then why do you let them play the first 40 minutes? You have just as much chance of an injury in the first quarter as the fourth quarter.
I think NE will win on Sunday so the Bengals won’t have anything to play for, and they’ll rest players as well. I do think we can beat them even if they go all out. And if they rest players, so much the better. I’ll take another cheap win.
It’s great to be in this position after the way the season has gone.
IF Peyton had stayed in, does anyone think Pace would have sacked him anyway in that spot?
I do, he beat his man and got there quick. Would Peyton have fumbled? No way to predict, but he is human.
2 questions maybe some one can help w…
Does anyone know what time the gates are going to open on sunday to park?
And does anyone other than myself want them to give away handheld towels to cause a towel waving frenzy at the stadium?
Let’s go jets!!!
Harv, we will have a rematch v. Bengals on Sunday 1/10 most likely at 1pm.
IF we win that game we most likely return to IND the following week.
The opportunity will be there to quiet the critics.
Peyton would have gotten the ball out pretty quickly (maybe a second sooner). Pace would have tackled him but the ball would have been out. Peyton has a quick release…similar to Marino (aka the Devil from Miami).
Scapp, they weren’t booing Painter, they were booing Caldwell for pulling the starters.
If so, Pace would have hit him regardless, what would the IND media and fans be saying if Peyton got hurt and Painter was their starter for the playoffs?
Peyton “could” have gotten hurt..yes…but fumble? no. Plus peyton knows the offense in and out..painter..not so much. We were lucky Sorgi was injured because he is more capable than Painter and we would have been more challenged.
Either way, it was a gift and we will gladly take it.
How about that double reverse Shotty called? We lost 14 yards. If he calls that play again, I’ll smack him.
This was not mentioned much two years ago: Belicheat going full bore in week 17 against the Giants, allowing them to get a look at them…..came in quite handy for the Giants as their D dominated NEs offense for most of the Super Bowl.
And even if Indy kept starters in – we were down 5 and had them pinned at their 9 yard line! Was not like we came back from 2+ scores down on their backups
Fatcessa talked about football??? All the guy cares about is baseball so his football analysis is totally worthless.
The Jets took care of business. That’s ALL THAT MATTERS. Manning was playing crappy anyway.
I do think the Colts were wrong to rest the team. I think you go for history, especially when you already have 1 Supe in the bag. But it’s irrelevant.
THE JETS TOOK CARE OF BUSINESS. THAT”S ALL.
In the midst of everyone pointing out that we were handed a gift by the Colts, it would be nice for one of these writers to point out that the Jets held the Colts of 9 points in the first half, and 2 out of 7 on 3rd downs.
Toon: It’s a really good point & I’m sure the Colts thought about it. The Pats beat the Gints weeks 17 but it wore them down-it was a ferocious game. Their old defense was tired when the Supe came & I think that week 17 played into it.
I think the Colts could have weathered it better as they are so much younger than the Pats were. Still, can you imagine if Manning got injured? We lost LW against a weak opponent.
I don’t understand this unwillingness to let Jet fans enjoy beating a 14-0 team. God knows we don’t get enough wins like this as fans, so just shut your fat mouths (I’m looking at you Francesa) and let us enjoy it. Enough with trying to guilt trip us into apologizing for the win. It’s not happening. We’ve had awful break after awful break this year, so excuse me if I don’t want ONE good break to be held over me like we stole something. Stop. We won the game and we control our destiny. Maybe the Dolphins should have shown up for more than a half yesterday. Maybe the Jaguars should have put up an ounce of fight in Foxboro. Maybe the Steelers shouldn’t have lost to the freaking Chiefs, Raiders and Browns. Stop with the sob stories. We got to this position, now we have to capitalize. Everyone else can cry all the way into the offseason if we beat Cincinnati.
I agree with JesusRevis, but I’d also like to add that while they did sit Manning for much of the second half, the colts starters in other positions remained for the most part.
It’s unreasonable to think that manning isn’t the nucleus of the team but the colts didnt go 14-0 just because of their quarterback. The jets are getting a slacking amount of credit for what was a huge win yesterday. These are the exact kind of games the jets are notorious for dropping.
What is the exact scenario for playoff situations? Does anyone have a link explaining this?
Jets in with a Win, if they lose they are out
Ravens in with a win
Everything else is complicated…use this tool
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/playoffscenario?algorithm=custom&15=50001441&16=55115115
what do you want to know. no matter what we are in the playoffs if we win next week and we will play the bengals in the first round. the only variable in the afc wild card picture is the 6th seed. If the broncos win and the ravens lose, then the broncos will be the 6th seed.
Here are the playoff situations as far as I know:
Colts- clinched #1 seed
Chargers- clinched #2 seed
Patriots- clinch #3 seed with win or Bengals loss
Bengals- #4 seed- can only move up with win and Patriots loss
Broncos- currently #5 seed but will only make the playoffs with a win and a Jets or Ravens loss
Jets- currently #6 seed but will move up to the #5 seed with a win or will be eliminated with a loss
Ravens- control their own destiny- will move up to the #6 seed with a win
Texans- would need 2 teams out of the Jets, Broncos, and Ravens to lose, and would need to defeat the Patriots
Those are really the only teams with any shot at making the playoffs in the AFC
I know were in with a win, what I meant to ask was what are the scenarios for who we play, either cinci or new england of course
im pretty sure we would play cincy no matter what, but I just wanted to double check
JR,
I’m pretty sure we play Cincy no matter what. They can only become the 3 seed by beating us & a Pats’ loss. We can only get in as a 5 seed. I’m pretty sure we’re playing them if we make it in.
Was anyone else bothered by the officiating yesterday? The refs called several pass interference calls on us, and most of them were very ticky tacky. Austin Collie pushed off of Lito Sheppard for a big reception, and one of the Indy corners was all over Edwards on a big 3rd down play. I guess the NFL was trying their best to get the Colts to 15-0
Bottomline: Cinci has nothing to play for if the Pats win. IF the Pats lose, they are playing for a 3 seed vs 4 seed.
If I’m Cinci, I rest everyone as there is no bi-week. I’d take the rest over the slim chance of AFC champ game at home.
It’s absurd to say the Colts “gave” us anything.
The Jets played more than well enough to win, regardless of whom they faced. No one can say with any degree of certainty what would have happened had circumstances differed.
The Jets will have ample opportunities to prove their mettle Sunday night, and hopefully beyond then.
As Parcells liked to say, you are what your record says you are, and right now the Jets record says they’re a playoff team. Any claims to the contrary are just whining from the teams below us.
Hopefully we get the 5th Seed. If Im not mistaken if we are the 5th seed we play Cincinnati and San Diego. We have a better chance of beating one of them than Colts and Pats…Just saying.
IMO The Chargers and The Bengals are Overrated…Just saying but Ill fond out Sunday won’t I.
The NFC playoff teams are already set.
Saints- clinch #1 seed with a win OR a Vikings loss
Vikings- clinch #2 seed with a win- can move up to #1 if they win their next 2 games and the Saints lose next week
Eagles- Currently #3 seed- Can get the #2 seed with a win and a couple Vikins losses- if they lose though, they would become a wildcard team
Cardinals- Currently the #4 seed- could capture the #2 seed with a win, 2 Vikings losses, and an Eagles loss
Packers- Currently the #5 seed, but would move to the #6 seed with a loss to the Cardinals
Cowboys- Currently #6 seed- would win the division if they beat the Eagles. If they lose, they will stay at #6.
*find*
Ocho Cinco has started the trash talking battle already- check out what he tweeted to Revis:
“I’m coming to the big apple to give NY what they’ve never seen, an escape inmate gone wild on Revis Island,WAMW try and cover me!”
If we win we will play the Bengals in the playoffs. If we win that game, we play the Chargers.
I’m not sure if I would rather play the Colts or the Chargers. Its a tough call for me. The Chargers are the hottest team in the league right now, and imo, the most complete team in the NFL. The Colts on the other hand have Peyton Manning, but are weaker on defense.
Haha, I love OchoCinco. Good humored trash talk is fine with me.
Haha any Knicks fan on here should watch this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL5zzi1gnVE
The Chargers are NOT overrated. They are the truth, and Philip Rivers is a top 3-5 QB. I do not want to play them
I’d much rather play the Colts than SD. West coast trips are not the Jets forte. SD is complete. Colt defense isn’t good.
Hahahaha omg Dylan. That’s great. It’s also nice people can see Gallinari isn’t a robot and is actually a pretty funny and goofy guy.
In the 2nd round of the playoffs the Jets would play the Colts if the Patriots win or would play the Chargers if the Ravens/Broncos win in the first round. So basically, if we want the Jets to play the Colts in the 2nd round, we would need to root for the Patriots to win in the first round.
That said, we would need to win 2 games against the Bengals first, so lets just hope the Jets take care of business next week.
No…if the jets beat the bengals 2x they would most likely play the COLTS again. If the Jets win and the #6 seed wins then the #6 would play the colts and we would play the Chargers.
Either way..I can see us playing the colts…do you see the ravens/steelers going to NE and beating the pats?? I don’t.
Looks like we will play the bengals twice at the very least and the colts twice…
deja vu!
Brendan,
Lol I know I love it! I can’t wait to see Gallo and Lebron next year.
Jets definately play CIN on 1/10 if they win.
For the record the second round is not determined until the first round is complete, the lowest remaining seed plays INDY.
So if Jets and Pats win, Jets play IND.
If Jets and seed #6 win, Jets play SD.
Also for the record, Yahoo is correct that the Jets are out if they lose, but the reason their explanation of why is wrong.
I thought that perhaps JETs could still qualify if PIT beat MIA and everyone else lost, so I tested my theory.
Jets would then be tied at 8-8 with HOU, BAL, and DEN.
First, HOU is eliminated due to conf record.
Next, BAL is eliminated due to common games (Jets and DEN would remain TIED at 3-2 in this tie breaker).
Then Jets would barely be eliminated on Strength of Victory (DEN 67-61 worst case, JETS 65-63 BEST case).
So Yahoo is correct that PIt and Den would qualify in this scenario, but their explanation is wrong as to why ( they claim Jets are eliminated in head 2 head with MIA, which is incorrect since they are not tied).
stars really are aligning for the jets this year
not only do we get the gift from indy, we get a banged up team with little if anything to play for at home in cincy
a win and we get cincy again in the 1st round. probably the best case senario – i would much rather play the bengals than the pats
Dylan -
Can we make the playoffs first before we start talking about who we’d rather play in the second round? Jeez.
R in CT said it best! so much so, that it bares repeating…
Joe B.,
Why don’t you read the last part of the statement.
“That said, we would need to win 2 games against the Bengals first, so lets just hope the Jets take care of business next week.”
Latinlawyer, that’s what scares me the most!!! Does anybody remember the 2006 season? Last game of the season was against Oakland, WIN your IN, Loss you go home. Memory serves me correctly it was a great game and the Jets won. Two weeks later the Jets are in the playoffs to play against…..WHO? OAKLAND! THEY GOT SMOKED!! ONE AND DONE!!!!! Now I’m not comparing Oakland 06 to Cini now; but it same type of games. I’m not sure if the Jets can beat the same team twice. Now or then Way too hard to do!
The Jets have a blitzing and hard-hitting defense that’s ranked no. 1 in the NFL. The Colts are entirely reliant on their offense and that offense has 4 essential cogs: Peyton, Saturday, Wayne and Clark. Now, if any of those 4 had gotten hurt in a meaningless game, the Colts, in all likelihood, would have no chance at a Super Bowl victory. So, Caldwell saw his team in a bar room brawl of a game and decided that “he who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.”
When Painter came in and the Jets delivered a beating to him and smash-mouthed their way to a rushing TD, who can realistically fault Caldwell for deciding that it was a prudent thing to do. What I don’t like about the press is that, if any of them had ever played the game, even at the Pop Warner level, they would completely understand that of all teams, the Jets were one of the few NFL teams that playing all 4 quarters meant a risk of injury to a critical player. Give the Jets their due, Caldwell wanted no part of the Jets because the Jets defense is fierce.
And, Marvin Lewis is in the same boat. Palmer’s command of NFL defenses and release is nowhere as good as Peyton’s, exposing Palmer to the Jets’ blitz would be just a terrible decision, as would rushing Benson. If these teams lie down against the Jets it’s because Rex has made the Jets into the type of defensive team that nobody wants to play. Isn’t that the real story?
BubbyBrister/shovelpass, I agree. Hope they come out ready for a fight, ready to hard and sound football.
That’s all I hope for really!
I would love to have Charlie Weiss next year. heck, i would give him the job now. the guy is a great OC. i heard the Pats want him.
Did anyone hear what Rex said about Schottenheimer before Sunday’s game? Based on what he said, Schotty isnt going anywhere next year, so save your breath, or should I say fingers.
I remember, we won on a last second fg. We got smoked because we had turnovers…but lets not lose focus…are the raiders better than the bengals of this year…yes…they went to the super bowl….
I just want the team to get to the playoffs…then we will see where the team stacks up…
At the very least its gets Nacho Libre some experience!
“I do not want to get paid to lose, i want to WIN!” – Nacho Libre
ko7,
I would love to have Weiss as our OC too, but there is ZERO chance he would pick the Jets over the Pats. He is way too loyal to Belicheat.
Palmer’s injury prone as well.
The only reasons I can see Cinci playing starters is if if they’d rather face the Ravens, Broncos etc in round 1 and they may fear the Jets.
Still, If I’m Cinci, I’d rather face the Jets with all my starters rested than play anyone else banged up.
The Jets are a dangerous wildcard team. Our D can keep any game close.
JR,
Lip service? I’ll believe that when Schotty is on the sideline in preseason game 1.
I agree.. If the Jets come out playing smart and hard then that’s all I can hope for. Any team with a good offense is going to be tough for the Jets due to our very inept passing game.
We are 30th in the league in passing offense and that is not good against tough teams that are well rounded. We need a couple of calls and our defense needs to play tall. Offense just needs to not turn it over and we will have a very good shot at winning Sunday.
Latinlawyer,
…it was a fumble, dammit !!
Dylan u have it wrong right now we are the 5th seed and baltimore is the 6th seed
Brendan,
That may be true, but this isnt the first time ive heard whispers of a strong relationship between Rex and Schotty. These 2 seem to get a long and the fact that Schotty knows the offense so well makes it easier on Rex. Im not saying he’ll definitely be here next season, but I’d say chances are he will be.
ryan,
No I don’t. Right now the Jets are sixth and Denver is 5th. If the Jets win though, they would move up to 5th, and if Baltimore wins, they would move up to sixth.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8147d1c0&template=no-right-rail-with-comments&confirm=true
Of course the Jets only won the game because they pulled Peyton and the A Team. (We did little against the starters, sad to say.) Shame on the Colts. For us I am thrilled, but think about this: what if the Colts pulled the plug so that the Jets might get into the playoffs over, say, the Steelers, who they might think of as a great playoff threat? Or this possibility: that a team in the NFL might some day pull its starters to cover gambling debts? My point is: the game needs to change the way it handles the standings, so that all games have meaning, and so that everyone “plays the game to win.” (In this particular game, Curtis Painter or whatever his name is looked a lot like Clemens, who surely played Painter in practice.) As Jets fans, we should protest the outcome of this game. Who wants to be “given” a win? It’s an awful feeling. And insulting too. Colts fans should be outraged, and we should also. Why doesn’t the commissioner fine the Colts for unsportsmanlike conduct? Last question: Does this mean that results in the sport are routinely fixed?
We need to beat the Bengals to have a better record in common games.
Well at least we don’t have to hear Favre’s lame pre game speech from last years do or die game :D
for sure, to me that was sanchez’s best game, the stats dont point to overwhelming but who cares? the bengal game, sanchez will again have to have his best game of the season. december/jan is qb time. i have no doubt our d will be stout and also keep the special teamers heads in it.
rex knows cincy from baltimore days he will have defense ready how about osi yuminyura to jets
Dylan,
you are breaking my heart here. i don’t want another season with this Idiot Schotty, someone said he knows this Offense but the Truth is he does not know this Offense or any other.
$$$$$$$$$$ should convince Charlie Weiss to come to NY.
those 2 hack writers are like most others, fuel the fire with bloated thoughts and finger pointing, helps to sell newspapers. f them.
For Weis to come you’d have to pay him more than rex and that isn’t happening!
cannizaro is a failed food critic who forgot to stop eating.
Cimini is the guy who was picked on in middle school and now uses his bully pulpit to attack the imaginary bully.
You cannot truly rely on these two writers for jets knowledge.
why is everybody saying jets got a gift the media never gives the jets ant credit hey we played with them all the way clark wayne were dropping passes they were not playing good our defense did good
im going to the game i cant wait
you kind of feel for sanchez what pressure he must be feeling
where are the fins fans now! thats what i thought we will win sunday. HA!HA!
That is what it is all about Tyrone—frig the media and let them think what they like. You play whoever you are scheduled to play, when you are scheduled to play them and against the players they put on the field—it is pretty simple. Not our problem.
mathewm.
I only hope you don’t actually believe the crap you posted, or I hope you’re not really a Jet fan.
In either case, you’re wrong.
ko7,
Haha I hope you are right. Weiss is a great offensive coordinator.
Mattewm,
you sound like the Colts fan from Hoboken who called ESPN earlier in the day.
“ya the colts threw it in so that the Steelers couldn’t get in, ya we we’re gonna beat them for sure, ya”
i think mathewm is a fins fan!
To see why the Colts played it the way they did yesterday, all anybody had to do was look at the Colts pre-game injury report-there were 23 players on it-that’s more than half an active roster’s worth.
If the Steelers and Miami tie, and the Broncos, Ravens and Texans lose, the Jets would clinch before kickoff.
Hey, after the last two weeks you’re going to question the possibility? Haha.
I actually think Rex summed it up best “They beat 14 teams this year, they can play the game any damn way they want it”
As for Schottenhiemer, Im sorry but Ive reached the threshold with him. He got bailed out yesterday. They lose that game because we couldnt get in the end zone, he is out of the job. Callahan’s the guy who put our running game in, every play of it.
Schotty’s playcalling on the first 3 series was some of the worst looking offensive football Ive ever seen. When he actually called the game like a real NFL Off Coord, the Jets moved the ball. When he went to his patented Double WIng Reverse or Chuck N Duck, the results were what we have seen for 4 years.
I hate to beat a dead horse but those of you who have read my posts know that I am as positive and fair a Jet fan there is, but this guy sucks. I just think that this guy will lead Sanchez on a career of mediocrity, and that another guy could get more out of the kid. Schotty has some good plays sometimes, but after 4 years, a ray of hope or two is not enough when you stall drives with idiotic risky trick plays and your team is one of the worst red zone offenses since Paul Hackett
Francesa gave the Jets a 10% chance at the playoffs at 10-6 just two weeks ago, saying the Jets have NO tiebreakers. Well I’m curious — exactly what games other than the Denver game vs Oakland was a major upset in the last two weeks… none of them, and even if Denver won that the Jets still get in at 9-7. 10% chance if 10-6?
He’s a blow-hard who only checks crazy scenarios when he feels like it and when other people tell him they did the work and the Jets actually do have tiebreakers, he berates them — like when he yelled at Ira for saying the Jets would beat the Steelers on common opponents if they both win out and he YELLED: how do you know common opponents before the season ends? Um, if they both win out tubby, you can pretty much figure that out.
greg 130
I agree 100%, he is RIDICULOUS at times. Just downright rude and obnoxious
Sometimes he says what has to be said and makes some good points, but when he disagrees with a person, even if the point in question is clearly debatable, he acts like a jerk
Greg130, not to nitpic an improbable result but Jets would not make the playoffs should PIT tie MIA and everyone else loses, including themselves.
PIT would be the 5 seed at 8-7-1 and DEN would get the sixth seed over the JETs based on Strength of Victory, see my analysis way above somewhere.
A tie is as good as a win to PIT if every other team loses.
Not saying Jets or their fans should be apologizing for anything- you just have to play your games and then let them “add em up” as Rex likes to say.
I will say, though, that you’re delusional if you think the Jets were poised to win that game against Peyton Manning. He didn’t have a scratch on him, was just a few inches/drops away from about 10 more points.
Good job to stay in the game so they could pull it out, but you gotta be kidding if you’re licking your chops for a rematch. Let’s take it one at a time.
ah yes, was thinking 9-7, duh
Jon in bk
I am the biggest Kool Aid drinking Green and White loving Jet fan there is and I agree with you 100%. Any talk of a rematch is premature.
That game was set up for Peyton and Co. It was inside on a fast surface, out of the elements of December. The Colts have been great at home since Peyton became Peyton. Extremely difficult to beat
The Jets did exactly what they needed to do, kept it close and physical enough just for Caldwell to decide that Peyton and Co played the number of snaps they needed to stay sharp
The Jets are not one of those teams that gets alot of calls go there way or alot of breaks. There have been games this season where questionable penalties have negated points, or mental errors more a result of the Jets beating themselves than the opponent, have led to crushing losses.
If the Jets got a break or Xmas present, its been long enough, they deserve it. They smelled blood and went for the jugular.
The true test will be this weekend. I am excited and pleased with the win over the Colts, but a win at home on primetime Sun nite will cement the Jets as being playoff worthy.
Cinncy is a carbon copy of the Jets just with better QB play. I think the Jets are better defensively, should be a great smashmouth game
jon in bk
One more thing
Those inches and drops can be attributed to the fact that the Jets may not have sacked Peyton, but they hurried him, disrupted the timing and ball placement on those routes.
That was precisely the plan, Peyton is going to find the open man when blitzed, however the pressure disrupts the timing, making the Colts have to make great catches and throws to beat them
You cant have it both ways. The Jets forced overthrows and hurried decisions
There was a good post on another site basically saying the NFL wanted the Jets to win to have the NY market tuned in for week 17. I thought the same thing at the end of the game yesterday.
It happens all the time.
I am just glad we have the opportuinity to make it to the playoffs. Would anyone here honestly believe we would have a shot if the Mangina was still here?
Rex has done a great job, Schotty has been piss poor as usual.
Overcoming the loss of Leon and Jenkins has to be an accomplishment worth recognizing.
Go JETS!!!!!
