Braylon Edwards Calls His Shot

By Bassett on 31. Dec, 2009

babe calls shot-709226.jpgBraylon Edwards wants New York to be his redemption, and with the postseason just one win away, he’s trying to do everything he can to make it a reality, even predicting it to the press. Rich Cimini writes a great article today on Edwards and his desire to go to the playoffs for the first time in his career.

The article has a number of good quotes, and here’s a smattering of them.

“We won’t lose this game,” Edwards said. “We won’t lose this game. We want it too bad. Just talk to the guys and you get a feel. You can hear Rex’s conviction when he talks to us. Guys are serious about winning this game … [g]uys aren’t talking about New Year’s Eve. Guys aren’t talking about family. All guys are talking about is the playoffs. All guys are talking about is beating Cincinnati. I’m convinced this team is 100% in. I don’t think we can lose this game, just from the mind-set we have, from the attitude we have. I just don’t see it.”

“They could play their starters, they could bring back their Hall of Famers, we have to win this game,” he said. “It’s a must-win for us. It doesn’t matter what they do. We’re going to play our hardest and we’re going to beat them, and get into the playoffs and play them again … [t]his is my opportunity. I’m going to do everything I have to do to ensure that, if we don’t go, it won’t be my fault.”

I like his confidence, I like that he’s willing to give everything he can to this team and this team’s chance at the playoffs. This is a great shot at redemption for Edwards, and I hope he finds it in New York. I like Edwards a lot, and there’s not been such a talented receiver on this team in a long while, but with that in mind, I’m still cynical about just how far Edwards will go to make this team win. He’s not exactly the type of receiver who digs out short passes, like Coles or Cotchery would. Maybe it’s his body type … I don’t know … what I will say is that once the ball is in his hands, he’s a force to be reckoned with, I know that much.

I like Braylon, and there is nothing I would love to see more than a 75 yard bomb where he takes it to the house.

We are going to find out who stays and who goes on Sunday night, with that being said here it comes…

PLEASE Schotty, have a gameplan that resembles an NFL offense. No trick-plays, no 20 yard posts on 1st and 10 from our 27 with a rookie QB. Run the ball, get Chez some easy completions, then build off that depending on the flow of the game. When Schotty calls the game by the book, the Jets move the ball, its that simple. We dont have to trick people, we have guys who are good enough to beat people straight up.

In short, call the game to WIN IT Schotty, not get a head coaching job

I really like Edwards and hopefully he ahd the Jets will enjoy a long and rewarding career together.

Obvoiuslly he comes to us with history, but he seems to be genuinely trying to turn the corner for himself and the Jets for the better.

I can definitely get behind a player like that! I’m witnessing a similar transformation with Kerry Rhodes. I’m no saint myself and these guys are younger and more talented. I can just imagine the struggles they deal with in regard to temptation, success and ego.

I really hope the best for these guys, but let’s keep their lockers separated just the same – lol!

The one thing I do know is that this team does not get the credit they deserve, people look at it as the same old jet but what they don’t know is that we have a new grop of players that are the beat in the NFL I know I beleave in them and I know they have the weapons that it takes to make till the end. Good luck guy . Prove them all wrong

Braylon is a #1 WR and the jets need to treat him as such. I love J-Co but If Edwards and Sanchez can get something going….. I don’t understand why Sanchez an Braylon aren’t working out more together. Chez needs to know were and how Edwards wants the ball.

That is exactly the problem. With Braylon you never get to know where or how!!.

I see Braylon taking a simple 15 yard pass to the house after a series of amazing broken tackles and speed.

    Let’s get this Jets.

hanknaples, Braylon Is like 6’3″ and i see him being used like he’s Coles or Cotchery. I think Braylon is elite and if for once Schotty draws up a play using the players skills, you will then see.

Zartan, you’re just assuming Schotty doesn’t use him right… Kind of like Leon blocking Adalius Thomas?

I believe that Mr. Edwards’ attitude is the correct one. In fact, I like the leadership he’s displaying with his statements.

” I won’t be the reason we lose” – I hope the rest of team is hearing him say that and emulating him.

Since he has a reputation for catching the difficult ones and dropping the easy ones, you’d have thought he and the inaccurate Sanchez were a match made in heaven.

While I love the extra dimension he gives the offense, he’s averaging three catches a game as a Jet, so I can’t imagine anyone is going to give him anywhere near 9m a year, unless nearly all of it is in incentives which will only kick in if his production goes up a lot. I’m sure the Jets will protect themselves but still give him a reasonable sized contract which takes into account his upside.

Note: He needs 22 catches in his final game of the season for the draft pick to escalate from a 3rd to a 2nd rounder.

he can have 400 catches as long as we win. never good to predict the outcome of a game also, unless your Joe. should be a good game.

I’m a big Edwards fan but I really hope that that this works out better than when he was going to “put on a show” earlier this season against the Bills. Edwards ended up with a decent game but had one of the most embarrassing drops that I have ever seen. A deep ball bouncing off of a receivers face mask is never a good thing. I hope he and the Jets bring it this week!

I like that Braylon and J-Co are in the confident mindset and I think Rex likes to hear that from his players. As for Braylon’s “drops” hey, it happens. Revis dropped that sure INT in the Falcon game on third down. You just have to move on. I think the Jets should and will lock up Edwards long term. I also like the fact that we could see Cincy in the first round, its a very winnable game. As a fan the Bengals have been a nice story, but they are not a team that scares me. None of that division is really that scary..Pitt,Baltimore,and the Brownies. Its not that unbelievable that the Bengals swept that division. The likely top 3 teams are the ones that would be scary…Indy,San Diego, and New England. However, anyone is beatable, and if the Jets get in,excuse me,WHEN the Jets get into the playoffs,ANYTHING can happen,as illustrated by the Cardinals last year. They may of won their weak division, but very few had them going to the Super Bowl. One more thing regarding the Cincy game, I really do not think it will be all that close. The Jets usually try to make things interesting, but I see a pretty comfortable margin of victory. I hope I am right,I guess we will see? Everybody have a safe and Happy New Year, and GO JETS!!!

off-topic, but I felt the need to paste what doooshbag Peter King wrote when providing his picks for Week 17:

Cincinnati Bengals (10-5) at New York Jets (8-7)

Congratulations, Jets. You’ve qualified for the playoffs, and a wild-card trip to Foxboro next weekend, by beating Curtis Painter and J.T. O’Sullivan in the second half of two straight games. What pride you must be feeling.

Prediction: New York Jets 26, Cincinnati Bengals 10
    ———————————————————————-

How great would it be if we make it to the AFC championship game? It would certainly go a long way towards shutting up these pampered over-paid analysts, who get paid handsomely for stumbling their way through their short-sighted projections, fortunate for even a 10% accuracy rate for their hubris-filled fluff …

But, rant aside, however far they go this year is great, but they’ll only be better NEXT year, and IF Sanchez turns out to be a more consistent version of the occasional glimpses of greatness that we’ve seen from him this past year, we can be a formidable threat for years to come… and the Pats/Colts? Brady may have a couple more years of relevancy left, but it seems the next decade has the potential for a changing of the guard….

In the meantime, I’ll be happy to see the Jets win at least 1 Playoff game this year just to shut the mouths of these bloated ‘journalists’…

Of course, we must win next week first…

I am not even concerned in the least about Braylon’s numbers. At times he was an invaluable decoy that allowed the Jets to pound the ball. I only remember him dropping 3 passes this season, the infamous one in Buff, the one in New Eng, and the one last week against the Colts. He drops balls when he is looking where he is going to run with it before he secures the ball. I think he has made an effort to correct it, and the more he matures, I think the dropsies will fade away.

Ive also remember him making a catch in the Buffalo game on the sideline that no one else could make. And the one on Mon Nite in Miami was probably the best catch a Jet WR has made this decade (maybe Cotch from Favre vs New Eng last year).

We’ve seen glimpses of how unbelievable he can be. The problem this year is that the Jets have to FORCE it. They got the guy week 5, and Sanchez has tried to force feed the ball to Braylon a little too much, I guess to try and make up for lost time. Schotty needs to start using Braylon in the end zone on the fade routes. There has been no where near enough of that. The one time he did it, Braylon carried 3 Dolphins into the end zone

There is one thing I learned about Braylon Edwards in his short tenure here. The guy has heart and he can make plays. And often when he makes a mistake, he almost instantaneously made up for it in his next oppurtunity. I like guys who fight back like that. He is the kinda of guy that we dont need to catch 8 balls for 150. He can make a play big enough to change the complexion of a game in one shot.

As to Edwards he is what I saw at Michigan. He is a really good WR and when his head is right he is a leader and a guy you can count on.

His problem (very similar) to his boy Rhodes is they got a early success and then let the “outside” crap cloud why they are famous.

Edwards clearly has been on his best behavior since being here and with a big run game and a rookie QB has done as good as excpeted.

I thinhk the guy is a keeper unless he gets insane in his contract demands

    TOON2388 -

Of course he’s not correct. Peter King can’t be asked to “research” and “know things”. He’s only one of the most prominent NFL writers in the country, what does accuracy matter? There’s something like a 5% chance we end up in Foxboro.

    Toon,

For us to end up at Foxboro the Pats would have to lose this week AND a convoluted combination of teams would have to lose giving the Bengals the 3 seed on compartaive strength of schedule versus the Pats.

Very, very unlikely. In all probability if we win, we get Cincy again next week.

King really is an idiot; I have e-mailed him approx. 15 times over past 2 years to ask what is keeping Joe Klecko from HOF and he has never once fielded the question. Klecko not in, while I am sure some guy with rings is in is the NFL equivalent of Kirby Puckett being a first ballot HOF while Donnie Baseball is not in yet their career stats are almost identical

My impression of Mr. Edwards is a positive one.
    He is capable,bright and articulate.
He could develop into something quite fine here…
    Why?
    Because he likes it here.
Mr. Edwards is a very good compliment to the other receivers…none of whom are like he.

The playoff picture is simple for the Jets. If we win we’re in and play Cinci the following week. It does’nt matter what any other team does. We’ll be #5 seed and Cinci will be #4. If we don’t win then who cares?
