LaMarr Woodley Proves Why the Steelers Are on the Outside Looking in At the Playoffs

By Bassett on 31. Dec, 2009

LaMarr Woodley is an idiot … and spoiled … need proof? Look at what he said to a local TV station about the Bengals and Colts laying down to the Jets.

“Cincinnati is probably going to go into New York and lay down for the Jets and not play them hard, just because they don’t want to see Pittsburgh in it, because they know if we get into the playoffs, we’re a dangerous team,” Woodley said after practice on Wednesday, according to WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh.

“All of them will lay down. No one wants to see Pittsburgh in it. That’s just how it is,” Woodley explained. “Like I said, everybody knows that we’re a dangerous team once we get into the playoffs. No matter how we played throughout the whole year, once we get in the playoffs, Pittsburgh Steelers is a playoff team.”

Woodley isn’t the only one who thinks that teams are tanking it against the likes of the Jets in order to keep the Steelers out. Several league and media insiders have expressed to us strong suspicion that the Colts’ real reason for yanking starters against the Jets on Sunday was to let the Jets into the postseason field, in the hopes of slamming the door on the Steelers, who went into Indy and beat the 14-2 Colts in the 2005 divisional round.

One Steelers source doesn’t think the Colts care.

“Our secondary would seem pretty inviting to [Peyton] Manning,” the source said.

I’m not going to delude myself and say that the Jets are a great team. The fact that they could be wild-cards to me, is utterly mind-boggling with the way this season has gone, and more than anything it proves just how erratic all the other teams who were in the AFC wild-card hunt have been all season.

Sure, the Jets have a lot of interesting pieces (running game, defense) that could help them should they make the playoffs, but they still have a very young QB who has been the cause of some agita for his coaches, fans and teammates alike. The Jets have been their own worst enemy this season, losing to the likes of the Bills, Dolphins, Jaguars, Falcons … not great teams, but not total sucktards either.

Meanwhile the Steelers — the defending champion Steelers, mind you — have lost to Oakland, Cleveland and Kansas City … three brutally awful teams with a combined record of 12-33. So for Woodley to call out other teams is the height of irony … he might want to get his own house in order first before worrying about other teams and what they’re doing or not doing.

I really felt at the time of the game that the colts were thinking exactly that, i mean who would u rather face a team with massive play-off experence, or the Jets.

This was a win-win for the colts, and a chance for them to get a major monkey of there back

The Steelers seem to cultivate a team attitude of stupidity, and it shows in all the various incidents over the years of Steelers saying dumb/arrogant things. Woodley is just the latest example. Remember James Harrison saying it’s a bigger honor for President Obama to meet the Steelers than it is for the Steelers to meet the president? Or Joey Porter practically threatening to attack President Bush? Or Porter becoming violently offended by Jerramy Stevens’ assertion that he wanted to beat the Steelers? Or Hines Ward publicly accusing his own quarterback (one of the toughest players in the league) of faking an injury? Or, this is my favorite, Ward talking before the game about being upset that the Steelers were favored over the Seahawks in the Super Bowl five years ago, because he wanted the Steelers to be big underdogs so that when they won it would be recognized as a bigger upset?

I believe Ryan Clark of the Steelers summed it up perfectly….. We havent played like the SB Steelers and i dont think anyone is afraid of us right now…

The Steelers should have not blown a ton of 4th quarter leads and been mediocre since week 8.

What a whiner. I agree with Elliot, the Steelers are one of the yappiest and most arrogant teams in the league.

All the Jets can do is play the games as they are presented to them. They had the 7th toughest schedule (the Steelers had the 29th), a rookie QB, a rookie HC and some really significant injuries and mid-season personnel changes. Yea, we all know they lost some games they should have won but they never quit and they are now in a position to get into the playoffs. They earned that right.

Maybe the jets should lose on purpose because the steelers deserve it more?

The jets are 0-5 in games decided by less than 7 points. They have been inconsistent when it counts but nobody has blown them out. I’m sure if the Steelers played the Jets it would be a close game, and that the Bengals are not looking forward to having to face them either. Hopefully after this Sunday, they’ll want to face them again even less!

Let’s think about this for a minute. I think it makes sense that teams would lay down for us in the hopes of keeping the Steelers out, because they definitely fear us less. We are very lucky to be where we are, and I think a lot of teams would prefer to play us over the Steelers in the play offs. In the spirit of that discussion, I’m not sure LaMarr Woodley is an idiot. You can’t be an idiot for speaking the truth can you? And he didn’t say we (the Jets) didn’t deserve to be ahead of them. Woodley might be sucking on sour grapes but the Colts likely stood back and let us by with that very idea in mind.

Green Lantern: “People Actually Believe The Colts Let Us Win Because They Would Rather Play Us!?!?!

Perception is not always reality. Just because we (Jets fans) know we have a better defense than the Colts doesn’t mean they believe it. And Peyton’s ability to march down the field after Smith’s TD return might give them reason to think we are an easier opponent. Let’s face it, our D is amazing, but as good as it is, Manning did to us on that drive what he has done to us for years. I’m sure he’s not quivering in his boots over us.

I live in PA and this is the exact reason the steelers are 1a in the hate list behind new england.

Woodley complained that people are resting their starters for the last two weeks, but maybe if they wouldn’t have taken 5 weeks off in the middle of the season, they wouldn’t be in this position

Stupid Jets fans….Woodley simply made a truthful comment that the Pats’ and Bungles will ;ay down so the Steelers can’t get in. How is this statement ignorant? The Steelers know they are outside looking in on because of their poor play, but he is correct in the fact that if the Steelers get in, they will be dangerous, just like in 2005.

Until the Jets win games they should and beat a few of the NFL perennials in the playoffs, they will not get the repect they and their fans crave. Nor should they. The D is statistically #1, but I believe my lying eyes more when I see them blow late 4Q leads and when I see Peyton drive down the field immediately after a TD. As Ryan said, the Jets have a good (not great D). It takes very good to great Ds to do what these Jets have not done consistently this year: shut down the other O all game long. With Ryan, I think that type of D is coming though…

    31. Dec, 2009 at 4:43 pm #

Ken H – The Jets haven’t lost in regulation to a team with fewer than seven wins this year, whereas the Steelers have lost to four. Yeah, real dangerous.

Maybe if the Steelers and their fans showed other teams some respect you wouldn’t have to make excuses as to why you’re on the outside looking in.

Woodley’s statement might not be ignorant, but coming to a Jets fan site to call Jets fans stupid kind of is.

Instead of worrying about what the colt and bengals will do, the steelers should have played better football during the season if they wanted to get to the post season. After the Atlanta loss, I said that this team does not deserve to be in the playoffs. I still stand by that comment; however neither does Miami, Jax, Pitts, Denver, Balt, Houston, or Tenn….

Jets went 1-6 in 7 weeks. They have no passing game except to the other team.

They do..have the number 1 running game, number 1 defense, and number 1 pass defense. Thank you for that Rex.

The truth is that Denver was 6-0 and then went 2-7.
Pitt lost 5 in a row (woodley should have considered that and then they wouldnt need help to get in)
    Tenn started 0-6 (enough)
Houston is the most inconsistent week in and week out
Miami and Jax lost 2 in a row
Balt like the Jets started 3-0 and then went 5-7.

We deserve it as much as the rest of these teams. I see us playing Cincy in the first week of the playoffs..

WOULD THAT BE A SATURDAY or SUNDAY playoff game???

I am not scared of Cincy. I live in San Diego, and to be honest I am not at all scared of the Chargers either. They can totally be run on, and again we have the number 1 running team…so long as we can control the clock, and keep shotty from giving to much to sanchez we can beat anyone.

Sorry Green Titan the remark was “dumb”. And that is what thier safety Ryan Clark said about the comment from his teammate. He pointed out maybe the way they played last season there might have been truth to it, but not the way they have played this year. The Bengals have beat them twice this year and would hardly be scared of facing them again.
As for the Colts, 15 points in three quaters and only 9 at the half! Those are far below what this team averages. And as far as the past, didn’t we embarrass Peyton 41-0 in the playoffs, so how do you figure Peyton has had all of this great success against us!
Teams that have nothing to gain but injuries before the playoffs typically rest starters.
Nobody is scared of a team that has lost to Oakland, Cleveland, AND Kansas City!
Sorry I think I’ll listen to his team mates, (the Post article also quotes Willie Parker and Casey Hampton shooting down Woodley’s logic), before I listen to you.(Unless you really happen to be Troy Polamalu)

You guys make me laugh. We have the number 1 running game, we have the number one defense. You really think teams in the playoffs aren’t going to be ready for your run game. the teams in the playoffs isn’t buffalo or miami their real teams. San Diego will tear you guys up which the Steelers have already beat even though there defense is playing horribly. The jets might have a good team once every 6 or 7 years but the Steelers miss the playoffs once every 6 or 7 years. Why do you think the patriots win there division every year, because they have to play the jets the bills and the dolphins twice a year.

georgeJETSon: Appreciate the feedback. Didn’t know about his team mates responses. I still think the COlts would rather play us than the Steelers because we have a history of beating ourselves that stretches back 40 years now. So I don’t think his statement that he believes this is dumb. His statement that the Colts were robbing them of a chance in the playoffs is DUMB, considering all the games that they lost. I think that’s what I meant. Either way, I really don’t care what the Steelers think and I like that no ones scared of us. That might work for us if we get in.

It goes without saying that the Steelers have enjoyed a lot of success. Because of that, they, along with teams like the Colts, Cowboys, Pats, etc. are far more high profile that a lot of other teams, whose players often say bone-headed things. It just doesn’t typically make the news outside of their own market. Having said that, as a Steeler fan, their player frequently say things that make me cringe, Woodley’s comments most recently. The only teams that don’t seem to say/do stupid stuff seems to be the Colts and Pats and I wonder if it’s because of their QB’s laying down the law? Dunno.

I was born & raised in Pittsburgh and have been a part of the Steeler nation my whole life but I firmly believe Woodley is wrong Teams are not afraid of playing the Steelers, and more importantly, the Steelers have no business being in the playoffs. They have an offense that puts up yards, not points; and a defense that this year seems intent to stay on the field a lot longer than in past years.
Plus if Pittsburgh makes the playoffs, the coaching staff doesn’t get shuffled and it is essential they get a new offensive coordinator and special teams coach. two areas that need dramatic changes and improvement. Steelers wouldn’t make it past the first round with their offensive scheme. Just end our agony this weekend by not extending this disappointing season.

Although I can see why some think that Woods comment was .. a bit blase however for the rest of the comments… Are You Kidding?
Pittsburgh are probably one of the least talkative / Smack talking teams around. I can only recall 3 comments in the last 3 years that were rather out of the norm from Pittsburgh. The only reason you even heard them were because they were in the lime light.

To be frank you sound like of butthurt fans. These folks are indeed the winners. By far winners across the board for years and years. Try to remember teams like Dallas, Pats, and the Chargers when they won, it was those teams talking so much crap in so many venues it was almost like watching CNN repeats every 30 minutes. When NY won they talked enough smack to fill a stadium, then whined about not getting enough respect for being the SB champs.
So as far as the 2nd commenter stating that Pittsburgh are the most Arrogant, I have to disagree they are truly some of the least arrogant and talkative.

Believe that if any of the stated teams were to have the 6th ring, gawd it would be non stop all day BS about how great they are. Heard any of the Burg’s team doing that? No I think not.

Sounds like a bunch of butthurt fans talking just to talk.

As far as why they have lost to a bunch of low on the totem pole teams.. THE COACH. Seriously he is responsible for those loses.
So Jets fans, a few years ago the (Just End The Season) Jets, Still you have no reason to call out a team that has proven itself time and time again through not only years but DECADES.

Common now, The Steelers may be rough but they arent crap talkers or dirty, They just have very determined and talented players that when other people come out gunning for them, the gun right back as opposed to just taking it.

Good Luck with the playoff decision making game today, lets see if they actually play or are just given the game so Pittsburgh wont be in the playoffs.

You guys last hero was Joe, so you got lucky this season and a few teams laid down for you and didn’t play their starters or you would have lost miserably like you always have done in the past. Now that you have made it to the play offs we will see what kind of fire power and resolve you really have.
