Film Room: You got burned by Rex Ryan

by Weeks on January 31st, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Reason #4,100,373 Why Rex Ryan is the man (like it or not):

Rex who is in Miami decided to go down to an MMA Strickforce event where he was briefly interviewed. Upon finishing the interview he sticks it to the Dolphins fans … I can’t hardly wait for next season already!

Prospect Watch: WR Damian Williams

by Weeks on January 31st, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Though Braylon Edwards will return to the team next season the Jets seem to be in need of a slot receiver. Although David Clowney has shown promise (Mr. Preseason) he has been left untouched during the season and the receiving corp doesn’t have much talent beyond Cotch and Edwards. Though Golden Tate is projected to be taken by the Jets by Kiper, I’m not a big fan of Tate myself. Although Williams does have some things to improve on he seems like he could be a potential sleeper in this draft.

The Good: Williams can get off the line quickly and can change direction in a flash which is part of what makes him such an elusive receiver. He keeps the ball away from defenders and will get away if they do not hold on. He can adjust under pressure to make the tough or poorly thrown catches and is very reliable (where was he when Mark decided to throw five INT’s against Buffalo!?). He is an excellent route runner and is an average wide receiver.

The Bad: The biggest issue with Williams is that he isn’t much into blocking (nor was Dustin Keller) however if Keller can evolve I don’t see why Williams couldn’t master the art. He does have issues getting to top speed quickly as well. He also lacks the “deep field speed” not that, that would hinder any plans as Edwards is the deep field receiver (catching is optional though).

The Bottom Line: Williams would immediately upgrade the Jets receiving corp because beyond Cotch and Edwards no one has really been able to stand out and Mr. Preseason has yet to turn heads during the season (albeit he did have a TD in Oakland while filling in for an injured Cotchery but come on its Oakland). Schottenheimer and Co. like to keep 3rd downs short and Williams would be perfect for shorter situations however if they wanted to I bet he could do a few long balls. He also seems to be a good return man and could be of use to Mike Westhoff on Special Teams. The fact that he and Mark Sanchez developed a rapport at USC could factor into this not that it would guarentee their ability to coexist in the big leagues.

If he is still around later in the draft, I could see Williams getting a call from the Jets however the Jets still need a pass rusher and cornerback and Williams might not be around by the time all is said and done.

Below are the highlights and lowlights of Damian Williams:

Brad Smith + Greater Role = Warm Fuzzies?

by Weeks on January 31st, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Nick Antonicello who is quite the vocalist when it comes to the Jets writes that Brad Smith should have a greater role on the team next season. While Smith hasn’t exactly excelled as a wide receiver he has been able to add another dimension to the Jets through the offense (wildcat) and on returns. However I’m not sure I agree that Smith should take on a more traditional role on offense. More to come after the jump:

He’s the most versatile and dangerous player on the Jet roster offensively.

It is that reason alone that Brad Smith needs to be a major part of this offense for years to come.

That means the Jets need a solid and reliable back-up with the depature of Kellen Clemens almost certain.

That back-up should be Brad Smith.

With Sanchez coming off a brilliant playoff performance against the Bengals, Chargers and Colts, it makes sense to elevate Smith which opens another roster spot and allows the Jets to carry just three quarterbacks instead of four.

Jeff Garcia, Chad Pennington, David Carr, Chris Simms and Kerry Collins are all possibilities that could back up Sanchez in 2010. Such an addition would also be a mentoring experience for Smith where he can further hone his passing skills while continuing to master the intricacies of both the Seminole and the Wildcat!

With Leon Washington back for 2010, the Jets have an opportunity to expand Smith’s role to a more traditional offensive weapon.

Having two quarterbacks that can run the offense make the Jets that much more diversified.

While I’m not suggesting a challenge to Sanchez, Smith’s natural athletic abilities need to be inserted into this offense, especially if Thomas Jones leaves for greener pastures.

While I’m not sure if I’m ready to see Smith take on a more traditional role on offense it certainly wouldn’t be out of the question. He has been impressive but still has much work to do before I would even consider giving him a greater role traditionally speaking. That being said Schottenheimer likes to get creative and if the Jets would feel comfortable with Smith and a Vet to backup Sanchez then it wouldn’t be completely out of the question.

I can see Smith definitely getting more time on Specials as well as see split action under the wildcat (with Washington) but on traditional offense right now I just cannot see it happening especially if the Jets carry on with Ainge and O’Connell … any thoughts on the matter?

Bullitt fined for hit on Sanchez

by Weeks on January 30th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Rex Ryan was visably upset when the referees didn’t call Melvin Bullitt’s late hit on Mark Sanchez and after Mike Pereira admitted there were missed calls, the league fined Bullit $5,000 on Friday.

On Friday, the league fined Bullitt $5,000 for the hit. The hit sent Jets coach Rex Ryan into a rage on the sideline and he later called the hit a “cheap shot.” Bullitt denied that there was malicious intent on the play, but told the Indianapolis Star that he understood why Ryan was upset.

“Five thousand dollars, that hurts,” Bullitt said. “I understand [Ryan] being mad because that’s his quarterback, but I didn’t try to hurt him. I was just playing football. I didn’t know if he had the ball or not. I was coming from behind.”

I believe Bullit when he said he didn’t intend to hurt Sanchez but the point of this is although there won’t be a perfect refereed game, they really should have called this I mean seriously you would have to be blind not to see this and in this case they were (and then had the nerve to call a holding penalty on New York, where is the justice!?).

Eliott is already grabbing Headlines

by Weeks on January 30th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Only three days old and Eliott James Bassett is already grabbing some headlines around the web. Phil Sullivan of JetNation read Bassett’s post yesterday and sent a shout out to the family and (as Bent put it) the not so little guy.

Congratulations to the Bassett’s on the birth of their first son, Eliott James.

We are not sure about the combine but Eliott James is inheriting some serious blogging genetics.  No word on how many words the newborn can type per minute.  Be on the lookout for babyjetsblog.com in the coming years.

Congratulations!

We do congratulate the Bassetts and we hope to see Eliott in the headlines often. If Rex Ryan is still coaching (at 69) and Eliott is drafted to the Jets I can see the possibilities now. I wonder if Mark Sanchez will still be playing at 45 …

Link: A Job Well Done, Mr. Ryan

by Weeks on January 30th, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Normally, we have found that Bleacher Report writers are all about the views and comments however Craig Rondinone seems to be the rare exception. Craig explains that there are three reasons why Rex Ryan should be given some recognition for his efforts as a rookie head coach.

Ryan turned Mark Sanchez’s season around

… Ryan stepped in and became as hands-on with the offense as he is in his kitchen. The turnaround was immediate. A system where plays were color-coated to help Sanchez with his decision-making helped cut down his turnovers. He did not lose any fumbles in his last eight games (five regular, three playoff) and his six-to-six touchdown-to-interception ratio during that span was much improved over what it was up to that juncture.

The results: the Jets led the NFL in rushing, helped their defense finish ranked No. 1 as well by keeping them off the field and fresh, and Sanchez was not asked or forced to win games with his erratic arm.

Ryan willed the Jets into the playoffs without two of his best players

NFL analysts had the Jets defense dead and buried when defensive tackle/ three-bedroom house Kris Jenkins was knocked out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. The Jenkins injury left a void on the defensive line wider than Chad Ochocinco’s mouth.

But the Jets run defense did not fold, bend or break … Washington’s absence never turned out to be the season-destroyer for the Jets it looked like it would be.

Ryan changed the culture of the Jets in one year. Edit by Weeks: This one is pretty self-explanatory folks.

Not a bad analysis of Ryan’s first year and his jokes weren’t too horrible either (I especially liked the hands on joke as well as the one about Chad Johnson’s mouth). Certainly, Ryan did make strides much like Sanchez in his first season and with some experience under their belts, the Jets seem to be on their way to a brighter future.

Almost No Regrets

by Weeks on January 30th, 2010 at 10:15 am

Rex Ryan made quite a few bold statements through his first year as head coach of the New York Jets however he only regrets his brief “argument” if you could even call it that with Channing Crowder. You remember the whole ordeal right?

“Well, probably the Channing Crowder deal,” Ryan said in an interview on the NFL Network today from Pro Bowl practice in Miami. “That probably got blown out a little bit … I was in Miami and I had my head on a swivel, you know?”

It’s good to see Rex doesn’t seem to be letting up on the big talk. While people may hate him for it, he does set the tone for the team and also provides some fuel to the other team, perhaps it is this that makes working for Ryan or watching a Ryan team so great. By the way, the Jets are hungry for some Fish so watch out Miami!
