David Harris Update, Ryan is ‘Concerned’

by Bassett on January 5th, 2010 at 9:21 am

Could ILB David Harris be out for the Jets this Saturday? Harris, who sprained his right ankle in the second quarter and was replaced by Ryan Fowler, during the Jetfs 37-0 victory over the Bengals, likely won’t be on the practice field today with the rest of the team. Could it be something that lingers into the weekend? Coach Ryan, who we all know doesn’t hold back much told the press yesterday that it’s weighing on his mind.

“I’m definitely concerned. Absolutely,” Rex Ryan said yesterday.

Ryan said he’s “hopeful” his leading tackler will be able to play. Harris’ ankle didn’t have an excessive amount of swelling, according to a source – a positive sign.

When Ryan sounds concerned, it makes me concerned. Bear in mind that this is a shortened week, what with the late game Sunday night, and then the league in their infinite wisdom making it the first game on Saturday. Grr.

I do think that this will be like the Jim Leonhard situation earlier in the year, where Harris ends up playing, but is obviously impeded in the process. Harris might have trouble making the practices this week, but I do think that the team will do their best to activate him and see what he can offer on Sunday. Looks like we’ll have to keep an eye on the practice reports this week.

Well this sucks. Cedric Benson is no joke, and I didn’t like what I saw from Ryan Fowler. Plus, it sounds like Fowler might be hurt as well. Hello Kenwin Cummings.

  2. avatar Brendan says:

He will play. This is probably mind games between Rex and the Bengals’ staff.

  3. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Harris isn’t going to miss this game.

Leonhard played the same friggin weak he had surgery to put screws in his hand.

Harris will play with a sprain.

Even if he’s 80%, Harris is still better than most other LBs in the league.

  4. avatar Brendan says:

Ben I agree that Harris will play, but we shouldn’t compare him to Leonhard. Apparently Leonhard is the toughest s.o.b. on the team, and would play if his arm got ripped off by a wood chipper.

  5. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Mind games or not its never good when one of your best players in hurt and wont be 100% for the playoffs.

The drop off from Harris to anyone else is as big as any on the team.

Might see a lot of 4-3 with Scott maning the middle instead of Fowler/Cummings playing

  6. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Ben

Agreed Harris will probably play but a LB with a bad ankle is a little different than a safety with a bad hand

  7. avatar Brendan says:

I would expect a lot of 46 defense if Harris doesn’t go.

  8. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Brendan

I also noticed Diggs has been on the field more…. They could also use him in the 46 as a roving LB/safety

He hits like a damn LB and can run… I just see Fowler on the field and get nervous.

  9. avatar Crazy Eddie says:

Yea, Eric Smith will get a lot of time in that hybrid OLB/Safety role he plays.

  10. avatar starz31 says:

Sprained ankles are painful, but they usually let up to tolerable within 1 week. If theres nothing structurally wrong, and the worst case is he re-sprains it…you can bet on them taping it up and him playing. no question about it.

  11. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Im just guessing that if we havent heard anything about an MRI or any bone damages from X rays, then its just your standard ankle sprain.

Its really all about how he responds to the treatment and his threshold for pain.

I think Harris will play, and play well…and just like Brendan said, I think its some posturing by Rexy thinking they will have Fowler in the middle like last week

  12. avatar starz31 says:

ankle and wrist is def different, i mean you gotta be able to run to be able to do anything.

  13. avatar m eazii says:

Hope he can play…hopefully we have a pretty good lead by 2nd half and can take him out to heal up…we need Harris for the rest of the playoffs if we are going to make a run…ice that ankle up DH!

  14. avatar greg sec130 says:

I’m more concerned about his ability to handle the pain and play well, not his ability to dress for the game. Rex is only concerned because every player handles injuries differently — some players are out for weeks with an injury another player doesn’t leave a game for… I’m guessing by Thursday his concern is reduced greatly (whether he says so or not is up to how much he thinks it plays into the Bengals game planning).

  15. avatar Deven says:

Without Harris its a big advantage for Benson and Cincy with blitz packages, I would say give him the whole week off of practice pretty much make sure he can play. We need everyone to play because this is not the same team they laid an egg sunday.

  16. avatar Rudibager says:

Like I said in another post, Harris’ ankle probably swelled up big time yesterday, like a sparined ankle always does the day after the injury.

His foot won’t be pretty, but I’m willing to bet that Harris will be able, and ready to play on Saturday.

  17. avatar Deven says:

ready yea i would agree. But its how well he can play. We need him as healthy as possible.

  18. avatar brian311 says:

DH is the 2nd most important player on the D behind Revis. we need him on the field. hopefully this is not a serious injury. ankles are always tough – like someone above said, if you cant run you are pretty much useless on the football field. hopefully with a lot of ice, and a lot of tape, he can play

  19. avatar JCVD says:

Do you guys think we might see Westerman?
I’m duying to see him get more playing time

  20. avatar DKnyj says:

    Cortisone Shot baby.

  21. avatar Bent says:

What Deke said. You can gut it out with an ankle sprain. Tape it tight, get a pain shot, suck it up and dole out some pain of your own.

    The DH <> John Abraham.

  22. avatar steviek says:

i’m not a doctor, but i’ve had a ton of sprained ankles. some are brutal and take weeks, some just take a couple of days. there are 4 different degrees of sprains. its actually a stretched ligament.
these guys often get the dreaded “high ankle” sprain because they are taped up so tight the sprain has no where to go when they turn an ankle. that takes months.
the garden variety are a little weird in that one day you can wake up and can put weight on it again and the next the pain is gone. its all about getting the swelling down and the training staff know what they’re doing with that.
the short week isn’t good, but he cannot practice and still wake up saturday and be ok. it was a good sign that word had him without crutches or a limp sunday niight.

  23. avatar greg sec130 says:

stevie — he walked off the field limping immediately, and literally five minutes later walked to the locker room under his own power, no limp.

The high ankle sprains typically keep you on the ground a little longer, limping a little more, and they’d be more concerned today.

  24. avatar Harris52ChampionshipDefense says:

Cimini said that according to “well-placed sources,” Harris’ ankle did not blow up the day after the game, which would be a great sign. You never know though with these “sources.” This would totally suck if he couldn’t go.

  25. avatar PA Matt says:

Bent, I dont get your comprison between Harris and Abraham. What’s mean?

  26. avatar JesusRevis says:

Harris is a gamer and Abraham is soft, which is why he missed playoff games for the Jets because of the flu.

David Harris needs to play a major role for us if we have any shot at winning some games. This is bad news, but i’m confident he will play. The dropoff from Harris to the next available guy is steep. Ryan Fowler is awful, and Rex probably knows this, so I would assume he would choose to play more 4-3 and 4-6 looks with extra safeties rather than having Fowler play significant snaps. If Harris really cant go, then i’m sure his replacement will be a combinations of Eric Smith, Digs’, and Westerman getting the extra reps.

  27. avatar greg sec130 says:

It wasn;t even the flu — didn;t he eat something that disagreed with him? Like seafood or whatever, was throwing up on the plane? Then he sat out the Oakland game. And the following year he did the same thing.

  28. avatar Mark says:

anyone know which announcers will be doing our game? I’m sure Michaels/Collinsworth wil be doing Cowboys/Eagles.

  29. avatar steviek says:

abraham didnt skip the game because of the flu. he had a sprained knee.
what got the label was the he was week to week for about a month and herm, his coach, inadvertently or not, killed him by saying he hoped he would be able to play.
the beat writers specualted the abraham didnt want to risk further injury because he was in his walk year.
how many times, concussions, jr richards, does it take not to question athletes injuries? walk a mile in another man’s shoes first.

  30. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ihedigbo is a GREAT blitzer.

As much as Eric Smith has become one of my favorites, Id like to see Ihedigbo coming on the blitz in place of him, Digs’ burst and ability to catch the QB is awesome

  31. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    Mark,

Tom Hammond, Joe Gibbs, and Joe Theismann will be the NBC announcers on Saturday.. We get the B-team.. As you mentioned, Al and Chris will be in Dallas.

  32. avatar JesusRevis says:

    I despise Theisman.

Does anyone remember the Monday Night game against the Dolphins, I think it was 2006, when Theisman and Kornheiser spent the entire game ripping on Chad Pennington? Those guys made me furious.

  33. avatar Brendan says:

I couldn’t agree with you more, Eddie. ‘Digs is a great blitzer and has the instinct to go for the strip every time he hits the QB. I like him and am glad Rex has found more playing time for him on defense because he has certainly earned it through his special teams play and limited defensive snaps.

  34. avatar Johnny Hector says:

I expect Harris to play and just hope that it doesn’t affect his play. If he is slow getting to the play and is missing tackles because he is not in postion then I would expect him to come out. I don’t think Rex is playing mind games with the injury.

  35. avatar brian311 says:

rex hasnt played mind games all year so i dont see why he would start now. remember he would declare guys out on the wednesday injury report. when sanchez was injured he told the Bucs on monday or tuesday that KC would be in there. there is no veil of secrecy with rex – he tells it how it is

  36. avatar Harris52ChampionshipDefense says:

Jesus, I remember that very well. That idiot carnival barker Kornheiser said at one point that his dog could throw harder than Chad Pennington….who then whipped a 34 yard TD strike to Jerricho in the fourth quarter.

  37. avatar AKA...Drew says:

They could send the D team to broadcast the game…. I could care less… but these guys do suck!!

Theismann, Gibbs?? What are we in Washington?

A QB who sucks in the booth, A NASCAR owner and a horseracing broadcaster…. What a joke!

We have not gotten respect since Parcells was here. We will go get it ourselves and takes names on the way.

  38. avatar Bent says:

PA Matt – <> means “not equal to” so I was saying that the DH is no Abe, which others have pointed out means that he won’t sit out a game unless he absolutely has to.

  40. avatar brian311 says:

DH held out of practice today

  41. avatar WW85 says:

Cimini reports that DH is riding the stationary bike today. I think that is mildly +ve. When I had a severe ankle strain I couldn’t let any blood rush down there without intense pain.

  42. avatar Head_coach says:

Im scared if the tiger cubs run on that left side of us if harris dosnt play. We might have 2 overload that area. I want westerman and some 4-3 def ova there

  43. avatar Brendan says:

I would bet my children (and I don’t have any kids yet, so you get the idea) that he plays. I’m as well versed in ankle sprains as anyone (blame my girlish child-sized ankles, go ahead and laugh) and I know the pain they cause. They’re also an injury that you can play through, if you’re mentally tough and get blood flowing down there.

Harris is a tough guy, I have no doubt that his pain threshold is high enough, so it will come down to the severity of the injury. From what we’ve been hearing, it doesn’t sound that bad, more like a rolling of the ankle than a dangerous sprain.

  44. avatar steviek says:

if he was on the stationary bike he’s very likely to play. the prescription for bad sprains is rice (rest, ice, compression & elevation). on the bike you’re skipping the r & e.

  45. avatar biltal216 says:

I was just watching the game highlights on NFL.com and it looks like he got hurt on the Lowery INT. It also looks like he got chop blocked big time on that play. I was at the game and didn’t notice him hobble of the field. Watch the highlight and he gets hit low just as he engages someone high.

  46. avatar EastSide says:

Thomas Jones never allowed Cedric Benson to out perform him. Hopefully this trend continues!

  47. avatar brian311 says:

also cimini is reporting that digs left practice with an arm injury. not good. we need all hands on deck to beat the bengals

  48. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Brendan & Drew-

I guess Bent made the point I was trying to make at the top of this thread, and made it more clearly than I did:

Harris, like Leonhard, is a gamer.

Also, yes, a sprain can be painful, and a player does need to be able to move on his feet in order to play. But a safety (ie, Leonhard) also needs his hands–to tackle, to blitz, to cover, to defense (let alone, intercept) a pass. Not all that easy to do the week they cut you open, put screws in your hand, then wrap that same hand up in a big clumsy cast.

All of which is to say, Jimmy Leonhard is the definition of gamer.

And Harris is no p**** himself.

In other words: David H is going to play Saturday.

Even if he isn’t 100%, he’ll be better than most LBs in the league.

  49. avatar jose garcia says:

I think that the play where Harris got hurt was intentional. The lineman went down and hit him too low.
