I don’t know if you watched the NFC clash between the Cards and Packers yesterday, but I watched most of it, and was horrified to see Charles Woodson getting reamed by Larry Fitzgerald and the rest of the Cardinals receivers on the reg.
Woodson tripped and then flopped like an Italian National Soccer player on this play, so basically Fitzy went untouched to the house, for some extra credit, he even gives up on the five yardline, bravo.
And again here, Woodson got chucked (chucked!!!) like a rag doll on this Fitzy touchdown.
Those are just two plays. Two plays from this entire game where Fitzgerald had 6 catches for 82 yards and (as you saw above) two scores. This is the guy that Revis is up against for DPOY? It’s a joke. Woodson was awful.
I know, I know, Fitzy is one of the best, it’s a small sample set, you should have seen him all season … blah blah blah … yeah, I don’t care. DPOYs don’t get embarrassed in playoff games like that. Imagine what that game would have been like if the Cardinals actually had Boldin up for the game, which should have helped the Packer D. The only reason Woodson will win it, is because he plays on the Packers and we all know that Green Bay doesn’t win awards that unicorns will snow teardrops of Elton John songs.
You can watch a full set of (very long, that’s what happens in a game with 96 points) highlights below.

I agree, it’s fairly ridiculous too how everyone was making excuses on NFL network and espn after the game for why Woodson should still be DPOY. Despite the horrible game.
Then they show the highlight of him making literally the only defensive play the Packers made all day (tipping that pass to Fitz on third down) and go on to talk about what an amazing player Woodson is. Ridiculous. Revis is in the process of getting snubbed. There is just too much momentum for Woodson.
-
Woodson is a really good corner…he plays very physical but just got out worked by Fitz. It was like a boy covering a man.
I love Revis and think he should win DPOY but Fitz humilating Woodson (he does that to alot of people) dosent take away the year that Woodson had.
-
Let’s not give in to the ‘miserable and bitter’ Jets fan label. We all have our moments and each have experienced how the franchise (at times) has ripped our guts out. But today shouldn’t be one of those days.
Huge win Saturday. Great promise and excitment going into Sunday.
Woodson is a great player. Revis is a great player. Bottom line. Both are deserving to win. If Woodson wins, possibly karma will give Revis what really matters. But Woodson led the league in picks, he is a tremendous playmaker and if he wins, so what. Revis will have his chances. Woodson played the best receiver in the league yesterday and quite honest, was on the bad end of some calls yesterday. He also made a game changing play on Fitzgerald. If the fumble doesn’t happen Cards probably win by 21.
Again, I’d vote for Revis 1,000 times if it were possible. But whatever happens, happens and in the midst of this run- I hope the DPOY is an afterthought for Revis and the Jets.
I voice when I’m concerned, or disagree but this award means absolutely nothing to me as a fan and I’m hoping it doesn’t for Mr. Revis either.
See ya in San Diego, we’ll be in P8.
-
What a travesty, I’m so disappointed in these so called journalists. They truly mail everything and presuppose everything based on their own biased opinions and popular assumptions. Its pathetic and unfortunately reflects much of our shallow society today.
-
Maybe I’ve just been spoiled by watching Revis and co. all year, but the secondary play in that Cards-Packers game was just horrendous. It wasn’t just Woodson. On both teams, the CBs were overrunning play after play, making wild, undisciplined lunges at balls that let their man gain crazy yards after the catch. It wasn’t guys just getting beat, it was guys playing sloppy and beating themselves.
-
As I said before Revis can’t get as many picks as Woodson because no one throws anwhere near Revis!
-
We are pretty spoiled when it comes to defense – in fact, watching this team and especially Revis has really let me appreciate defense a lot more. It made watching Cards-Pack surreal.
-
Woodson had a great year. Woodson made a number of instant game changing plays, whereas Revis’s continued brilliance changed game plans. So it’s a matter of which flavor the voters like more. I’m a Revis guy, and would vote for him, but one thing I give in Woodson’s favor is his knack for getting the ball. The Atlanta game could have been won by Revis if he grabs that int. just before the Gonzalez TD. If he makes that one highlight reel game-clinching play there, I don’t even think we’re having this discussion and it’s Revis as DPOY easily.
-
Look — Woodson had a spectacular season. If he wins the award, I won’t go beserk, because so often the veteran gets more votes to reflect his career, and the Packers were the “better” team according to media standards, etc. The votes were taken before the playoffs started, so this game means nothing… my only beef is that the NFL, like MLB, chooses to wait before revealing the winners, so each award can receive its own media attention. They should announce two award a day the week before the first playoff game, to avoid an embarrassment like this. It’s just an embarassment for the NFl more than anything else, to have to give out awards to players that spit the bit in the playoffs. If they do it after they win the award (publicly), that’s their problem.
-
good points – also i will add that boldin did not play, so woodson clearly had more help with l fitz than he would have otherwise had.
woodson is a great player – he can do a number of things (blitz, force fumbles, etc). but a corner’s job is to cover people, and no one does that better than revis.
-
And as for why they were making the excuses — a lot of the insiders already know the results but are not allowed to leak the information until Wednesday when it is formally announced, so it’s unfortunately an indication of who won.
-
And — I’m not saying Woodson was that bad yesterday, I’m talking in general when a player spits the bit in the postseason then wins an award for the regular season afterwards.
-
On the 2nd link we see the NFL refs being idiots. Roughing the passer? That’s just garbage. I thought this was football (for 1) and 2- there wasn’t a penalty at all
-
hey, woodson got ran over on that 2nd td….clearly offensive pass interference….
and the first td could have been offensive interference as well….
with the 2 crap calls on revis….and in general how much the WR’s get calls…. its a bad sign that they missed those 2 calls on fitzgerald….
-
At least one point during the game Troy Aikman said Defensive Player of the year Woodson. I actually thought maybe I missed something and they had already given out the award. Then shortly after Aikman’s statement, Joe Buck said possible Defensive player of the year Woodson. Aikman was on WFAN a a few weeks ago saying he thought Woodson deserved the award because he is a complete player (not only covers well but blitzes). Francesa actually said he thought Revis was the best he’s seen since Dion. He also said that Rex said the same thing.
-
woodson and the packers seconday allowed 29 TDs this season compared to revis and the jets’ 8…like Rex said this shouldn’t even be close
-
Shouldn’t even be close. If Woodson gets it after yesterday’s game it’s an absolute joke.
-
This angers me because there is no doubt in my mind that Woodson will win the award. But Revis is a much better player.
-
JR,
Yup, I see that happening as well. Voting ended before this debacle on a national stage could be seen. Stat-happy voters will be kicking themselves next week when Revis Christ shuts down Jackson.
-
This isn’t even his worst game. Look at Woodson against the Steelers. He got beat by Roethlisberger a number of times. He had the best passing day this year. 500 yards!
I understand he takes the ball away and sacks quarterbacks. But it certainly doesn’t add up when you give up a lot of scores. I’d rather have Revis shut down someone like Fitzgerald the whole game, than have Woodson allow two easy touchdowns and force a fumble that consequently didn’t even lead to a Packers score. In such a situation, Revis is keeping his team in the game while Woodson has his team trailing by two scores. But as far as the stat sheet goes, Woodson has the numbers. And thats all the journalists will look at. Nationally acclaimed journalists don’t watch Jets games. Most of them think the team is a joke. They won’t pay any attention to them and never legitimately saw Revis in a real game up until last Saturday. Thats what cost him the award.
And if you look at the game logs, Woodson had most of his numbers over a 4 game stretch against some pretty bad opponents. And he had another amazing game against the Cardinals with Leinart throwing the ball in garbage time.
-
when is the DPOY announced?
-
Woodson is better than Revis…he simply had an off day…and two offensive pass interference calls weren’t called on Fitzgerald.
When Revis plays at Woodson’s level for as many years as Woodson has then you can talk…until then, look at the numbers…make your argument based on this years numbers…not Sunday’s game.
Then shut the F up, idiots.
-
HAHAHAHAHAHA
jon, you dont understand football my friend.
If you want to look at numbers, Revis hasnt allowed over 35 yards to a receiver, while Woodson continues to get torched. It’s not even close, Revis is a better corner.
-
jon
revis is 17 for 17 this year against the opponents top receiver…you know nothing about football
-
Charlie is the greatest ever. Flat out and while I dont think anybody would take Woodson over Revis in a one game situation, his body of work this year was much more impressive than Revis, and considering the fact he is 33 and in his 13th year, that is much much much more impressive than what Revis did this year.
Where were other top corners at 33? Deion was on his way out of the league, Rod Woodson was already a safety and any other ones were out of the league. What Woodson is doing now, the league has never seen before.
The two fitzgerald touchdowns were both a product of illegal contact on the offense, btu no such penalty exists. The ball was not in the ait when he outmuscled Woodson, which means it is not a pass intereference call. it is bs and the receivers are getting away with murder.
Revis is a better cover corner and the corner I would rather have in a one game moment, but respect Woodson for everything he has done in his career and this year and he deserves the award.
-
As I stated above it wasn’t even Sundays game. This is the third time this season hes had a terrible game. If you’re a suppossed playmaker then make stops for your team in crucial situation. Woodson is probably one of the worst cover corners in the game. He allows a lot of catches to happen in front of him and makes up for it by forcing fumbles at times.
This is the defensive player of the YEAR awards. If votes factor in a guys career in this award that would be highly unfair and I would have to question that voters objectivity.
-
Gentlemen (or ladies)…cheer all you want for little Revis…Woodson is Defensive Player of the year…Period.
As for not knowing anything about football…I lettered three years as a Free Safety at the University of Washington…maybe not the greatest football program but certainly better than the high school experience you all try to impress your girlfriends (boyfriends?) with.
Your “Madden” experience doesn’t count.
When Woodson wins…THEN admit YOU know nothing about football…or are ALL of the writers biased…sheesh, stupid d-bags.
-
jon……woodson winning wont prove that we know nothing about football….. he is good, and i agree he does more then revis b/c of bliztes etc….
its always tough to vote on these awards….. hell who was the one person who gave david segui a hall of fame vote!!!!
revis has locked up everyone he has faced…. and if you went game by game he faced waaaay better talent then woodson did. yesterdays game, dont know how often he got burnt b/c the whole freaking team did…but CLEARLY the 2nd fitz td was a joke of a non call… and the first one was probably a missed call also….
and personally, i LOL at “or ladies” but low blow on the impressing your boyfriends line…. .dont need that stuff here….
but i respect ur opinions….and free safety at washington is cool….u played the game, more then most of us can probably say.
DPOY is probably a tough vote….especially if its between 2 corners….but revis did lock up some sick talent this year….
-
Both players had fantastic seasons, but they are very different players, and used very differently in their defensive systems. Revis is the best shutdown corner in the league, there is no debating that. He plays the best WR man to man and usually does not require help from the safety. Revis is left out on an island to defend his man. Woodson is not used this way. The Packers line him up all over the field. He checks the opponents best WR (at least he did after the Al Harris injury), he lines up at safety, he lines up and blitzes from the nickelback spot (he led all CBs in sacks). He had 74 tackles (Revis had 54). He is a playmaker in the truest form. Both players are worthy, you just can’t compare them apples to apples.
Also, to dispute a few points points made on here earlier, the Packers were not a better regular season team because the media thought they were, they were better because they had a better record. You are as good as your record says you are. Also, to say that Woodson is one of the worst cover corners in the league is a completely overexaggerated and frankly silly comment.
-
and stat wise jon???
revis….54 tackles, 47 solo…0 sacks….31 passes defended….6 picks with 1 td….woodson…74 tackles…66 solo….2 sacks…18 passes defended…9 picks… 3 tds…
SO with stats pretty similar….to me 20 more tackles doesnt necessarily mean woodson is a better defensive player….game action is game action…
then you have to go down the list / look at tape to see who each guy covered each week and how that WR did…..maybe woodson changed guys alot more, b/c revis pretty much locked up the #1 guy….(i dont watch packer games)
and when you do that……how can you not say revis is as-deserving the award as woodson?? woodson been in the league longer…but if i aint mistaken, he was pretty hyped up when he came into the league 11 years ago!!!! and this is the first time he has been this noticed / recognized for his play.
-
to me Woodson is an average cover corner but a very good defensive player….he is very physical, athletic and with great nose for the football……that being said- he doesnt come close to the overall polished year that Revis had this season……
the domination God Rell showed far surpasses anything that any defensive player has shown this year……moreover Revis’s performance and his ability to shut down half of the field is what propelled the jets to be the dominant defense that it is(even after losing their best front 7 player) and to be a playoff team…..so Revis in my mind deserves not only the DPOY but some considerations for mvp votes as well.
-
Jon- You’re a big ol jerk. A totally obnoxious tool.
Either player is qualified. Revis’ stats get hurt, because he is thrown at so little.
-
Pardon me while I go find a trash can to go vomit in … if Revis doesn’t win the DPOY then … where is that trash can!?
-
You idiots who feel you have to rip on one guy to build the other up are unbelievable. Both are GREAT players. Revis is far better as a pure cover corner, but Woodson essentially plays 3 or 4 positions for the Packers and is as good an all around defensive player as there is in the league. Not as good as Revis in coverage, but a great blitzer, one of the best DBs in run support, ALWAYS around the ball with a knack for taking it away (both picks and strips). Either is deserving of DPOY, and many DPOY calibre players would still give up some big plays to a future HOFer like Fitz. Just enjoy all these great players instead of ripping one to support the other.
-
Just a Green Guy….
Obnoxious tool? You must be looking in a mirror..You too can kiss my hind-quarters.
Klecko71…good points…one of the few that gets it…however, since Woodson joined the Packers, NO ONE has more picks, so this year isn’t the first we’ve heard from him…
Cheilman…good points as well.
Green guy…keep playing Madden and talking football like someone who played…maybe you can convince your friends and co-workers that you possess some understanding of the game.
Good Luck to the Jets.
-
gracias jon….i do get it.
as does jonah….. woodson does alot of different things, thats why its hard to choose between 2 corners for DPOY…
but jon u KNOW more picks doesnt necessarily mean he is better…. and i agree we have “heard of him” the past few years…. but considering how high he was drafted…took him a while to live up to the expectations.
he is good….wish i watched more pack games to make a more informative judgement…..but i have watched revis for 16 games… he is the biggest reason our defense is as good as it is….b/c he literally takes away half the field….
-
Klecko71
Woodson had decent numbers in Oakland…like Revis, they didn’t really throw his way that often…his hit on Mrs. Brady in the AFC Championship should have gotten him some more publicity…but they took the sack and fumble away with all that “tuck rule” crap. His last couple of years there were plagued by injuries.
In Green Bay, he (and ALL of the secondary) have to cover their men for a LONG time because of the non-existent pass rush. Woodson actually has made Al Harris better…
I like that Matthews kid the Packers have too…don’t think there is anyone else on that ‘D’ I’d want on my team.
-
matthews looks like a beast already…..
some could argue / have the opinion that woodson gets the DPOY over revis b/c he has been in the league longer as well…. out of respect…
voting for some of these awards is super hard.
-
What it all comes down to is this, would you rather have a guy on your team who completely shuts down the other teams best receiver every game, or have a guy who gives up a lot of catches and touchdowns but also makes a bunch of big plays? I think the answer is obvious, Revis makes his team better and makes a bigger impact that Woodson. What the Packers allowed the Cardinals to do last night would NEVER have happened against the Jets because Revis is THAT good. This isnt a knock on Woodson, who is clearly an exceptional player and I would take him on my team any day. Revis is just simply dominant.
-
Jon, You truley are an idiot. You think you impress anybody with that fantasy story about playing at Washington. I’m calling bullspit. you are just another internet tough guy
-
t mack
Not trying to impress you (I hope that doesn’t hurt your feelings)…If I were gonna make up my past, I certainly would have picked a better ‘football’ school…never said I was a stud…just that I played.
If you really want to call someone an idiot…please spell ‘truly’ properly…idiot.
Internet d-bag.
-
JR
Great points. I’d much rather automatically eliminate the other teams #1 than have a guy that can get you an int every other game. Woodson goes for the big play every time and succeeds 1 out of every however tries if that, and looks good because he puts up the sexy numbers. Andre Johnson terrorizes other teams. He’s usually good for 8-10 receptions and 100+ yards. How’d he look against Revis? You could have told me Woodson didn’t play yesterday and I wouldn’t be suprised. I realize Fitz is alot better than OchoCinco, but Revis was the equivalent of benching Ocho, the number 1 weapon on a playoff team. I’ll take that impact over a forced fumble.
-
Revis is an awsome shutdown corner, no question but Woodson does everything well. No corner plays the run as well as he does. He’s just everywhere out there. He was DPOM for 3 out of the 4 months of the season. If that doesn’t equate to DPOY?? What does
-
70% of the Earth is covered by water…the rest is covered by Charles Woodson.
-
both good players…i’ll take revis anyday….w/o revis jets do not have the stingy D they have now….he takes away the opp team’s best reciever and that shortens the palying field for opp team.
-
Revis is an incredible shut down corner, no doubt…. but don’t talk bad about Woodson in this game.
As has already been well documented, Fitz ran Wood over on the first touchdown and did a worse-than-Michael-Irvin style pushoff for the second touchdown. Take away those two plays and Larry’s stat line is a pedestrian 4 catches for 38 yards and no TDs. He also forced a fumble on Fitz and had a gorgeous diving deflection causing the Cards to punt in the 4th. Unfortunately, the rest of our defense couldn’t help out.
I think any other year Revis wins this award, but the body of work put on by Woodson was incredible this year, and yesterday shouldn’t take away from that in anyway.
-
Plain and simple, woodson goes for broke on every play thrown his way. Don’t get me wrong, his stats are amazing but he is a average corner. Trust me, I study films (download games like nobody every has seen before) and from what I seen this year and I’m not in no way trying to be bias. Revis SHOULD be DPOY, I can almost guarantee you that if these players had swapped teams and swapped roles (Revis playing all over the field including safety while woodson just being a cover corner) the Jets would of probably won 4-5 games this year while GB would be the best team in football. Nobody talks about how strong revis is for his size (almost like he is a strong safety in strength but has 4.3 speed, can jump out the gym and above average hands). I’ve probably seen revis maybe miss about 2 tackles all year (exceptionally great tackler). But his only role on this team is to take away one side of the field. While woodson has all the stats u may want to have, he doesn’t stick to one receiver all game so who’s to say that his cover stats are greater or worst than they are. Yes woodson is also a great tackler. Who’s to know that 2 days ago he gave up more than the catches to fitzgerald or even more TD’s. But what I cant understand is that GB gave up 29 passing TD while the Jets only gave up 8. One thing no one talks about is that most of woodson’s picks are on horrible teams who turn the ball over so much….. If this award was named Defensive MVP then hands down this would go to REVIS because revis is the equivalent to what peyton manning is on offense. Without revis, this defense turns from excellent to average instantly. But since this award is named Defensive Player Of The Year, Woodson will win just on stats alone with sharper being second and revis being third…… Why u think peyton didnt win OPOY but won MVP….. Thats how the story goes…. Oh and BTW, whoever said woodson was good in oakland need to ask a oakland fan how they feel about him. His coverage skills are marginal at best and only gave them 1-2 good years then got hurt and came back less of the player he ever was at CB, that is one of the reasons he is not there anymore and one of the reasons he plays all over the field. Ten years down the line revis will probably be in the role woodson is if his skills at CB deteriorate.
-
Woodson just won the DPOY…… He doubled the number of votes that Revis got.
The Pack has the DPOY and a better QB….
-
Revis is the best cornerback…Woodson is asked to be more than a cornerback, Woodson is the best player…PERIOD.
I’m going to study this game called football…just imagine how ‘dead-on’ I can be with my predictions when I learn the game…scary!
-
I case you want to watch…
Green Bay Packers Charles Woodson will be at the podium in the Lambeau Field media auditorium at 2:00 PM CST to discuss the AP Defensive Player of the Year award. Watch LIVE on Packers.com: http://bit.ly/G5xig
-
He’ll be Lambeau, while revis prepares for second round playoff football.
Final Woodson image: lying on the ground as his receiver scores twice. Last Seen Revis image: picking off Palmer and shutting Ocho stinko down to advance…I guess losers win awards.
-
Yeah, Woodson is a loser.
-
GO CHARGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bevis is about to get schooled!
J-E-T-S….S-T-I-N-K…you’re SO lucky the last two teams you played in the regular season laid down for you……and you think you know football?
LMAO!
-
Good to see that Jets fans whine just like their coach ….
-
I love how you fail to mention how he was playing hurt, had more interceptions and TD’s than Revis. They’re both great players. You sound like a bitter Jets fan.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing while watching the game. As a pure cover corner, Revis is a much better player.
Woodson has the name and the team, Revis has the game.
