So Mel Kiper has dropped his first Mock Draft for the 2010 season, and he has the Jets taking a golden domer.
Golden Tate – WR, Notre Dame
The Jets must give Mark Sanchez some weapons in the passing game, and while Tate has question marks on his ability to separate, he is more physical than many think and has always been a playmaker. In the mold of Laveranues Coles.
Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Dustin Keller … Leon Washington? What are they, chopped liver Kiper?
Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t see the Jets taking a poor-man’s Percy Harvin, when they have two guys who can flex out in Keller and Washington already along with a guy they can keep for pennies in Brad Smith. The last thing the Jets need is a slot receiver who has trouble at the collegiate level in getting seperation. The Jets have targeted players more often than not in the first round since 2006, and Tate just isn’t a guy they need to target, especially when you consider how much of the last draft, and this one, were expended to get offensive pieces for this team.
I think the Jets would be better served by doing some longer term looking at their oldest parts of the team, notably pieces on the offensive and defensive lines. We’ll see what the team gains and loses in free agency before we concentrate too hard on this, but I see this as a “how do I fit Golden Tate into the first round” move by Kiper. Look at teams starting around #24 … who “most” needs a player like Tate?
Thanks to George N. for sending this in!

I’m all for grabbing a WR, just not Tate. We need a legitimate #1 prospect, I really like Damian Williams from USC
-
I think the Jets are going to take best available player this year. That was Ozzie Newsome plan most years and Rex grew up on that.
He got his QB, RB and most of his defense in year one.
I actually like Tate and think he has a lot of Steve Smith in him. He can also return kicks since Leon is done in that area……. But like every year I would take the best avialable pass rusher and or OL. I love what Woody/Fanaeca bring to the table but they cant have many top years left…..and who knows how great our D would be with a legit speed OLB!!!
-
By the way, who does he have the Bills taking? I see a lot of people predicting the Notre Dame QB.
-
I’d prefer a pass rusher to a reciever in the 1st round.
-
Won’t happen. Tate won’t fall to 32.
-
The Jets are in really good position to draft the best possible player available.
-
We definaltely need a pass rusher. Isn’t Shawne Merriman a free agent? Do you think we should think about signing him? Thoughts.
-
I’m with NickelDogBlitz. I think we could use a serious sack threat on the D-line
-
the JETS are set at offensive skill positions with Greene, Leon, Edwards, Keller, J-Co, Brad Smith and the Clown. this is REX’s draft, and I see him using picks #1 and 2 on the Defense – this D is one pass rusher away from being an absolutely dominant unit.
remember we only had 3 picks last year and they were all used on offense.
also i dont know much about Tate – but disagree with the Laveranues Coles comparison. LC ran a 4.3 40 and was considered one of the fastest players in the NFL during his prime. I dont see Tate as that type of receiver.
-
we are not taking a WR – we will be taking best available OL or DL (that fits 3-4)
-
Best pass rusher or 3-4 DE to replace Big Kat one day please
-
I like that Arenas kid from Bama. Pair him with Revis and you have some combo.
-
A lot of mocks have the Jets taking either Tate or Damian Williams, and that’s mostly based on the idea that the Jets FO is wasteful enough to let Braaaaylon go this off season. I don’t think the Jets are that dumb. I think this pick will be a lineman. I want the Jets to take Brandon Ghee with their 2nd pick.
-
merriman would be a good pickup in free agency. But remember that cap is coming back eventually.
-
Since this is the guy I said I wanted, well either him or Shipley out of Texas, I better defend this. Can’t get separation at the college level? Er, he won the Biletnikof award in December as the best WR in college and he was first team AP All-American just this month. He got plenty of separation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikQaUdZrET8
Additionally, he also returned punts and kickoffs for the Irish, something we have been using Brad Smith and Cotch for since Leon went down. While I hope Leon makes it all the way back, it wouldn’t surprise me if his special teams duties get scaled back. I love Cotch as a wideout. As a punt returner, not so much.
And yes, we need a slot receiver. Go back and look at the first couple of games this year. One of the leading receivers was Stuckey, he even caught Sanchez’s first TD. It was a big part of the offense and the position never got filled. The Jets got so desperate they even tried Woodhead at the position and that is not a good fit. I don’t think it was just a coincidence that Sanchez started his really rough patch right when he lost one of his favorite targets.
-
Anyone ESPN Insiders have the entire mock? Can you post the link or post the mock?
-
I think there is little chance we end up taking a WR, unless Dez Bryant is somehow miraculously sitting there for us, which is not going to happen. Otherwise I think we either go DT or DE, either would be fine. Seen quite a few mocks predicting us taking the DE/DT Jared Odrick from Penn State. I’d personally want a legit 3-4 DE not a tweener (ie: Gholston) an actual big a$$ 3-4 DE.
-
Somewhile back somebody mentioned that there are free agency rules in an uncapped year for making the Championship games. Specifically, they can’t sign an unrestricted FA unless they lose one, and even then, can only spend as much on the new one(s) as they did on the lost one(s).
I think Tanny will pull off some usual wizardry though.
-
I’m with the folks who want a slot guy. That’s probably a #1 need. But I’ll be happy with the best player available, too.
-
Bent,
Thanks. I say wait a few rounds and Get Denario Alexander, who beat out Jeremy Macklin for the starting WR job and put up big numbers this past season. The jets can get a good 3-4 OLB in the later rounds also.
-
where do the experts have mount cody from bama going?
-
Its true that Merriman has never returned to his early form. I certainly wouldn’t like the Jets to give up that much for him.
-
Best DT jinx replacement and to give him rest next year plus time to learn on the fly,DE or CB would be my next choice if no DT is availible. Can u image REX’s defense next year with a 1st round corner playing opposite Revis…I cant even phathom it with this defense already being rank #1.Can u say dynasty type quality defense when healthy…
-
Yeah Merriman’s been worse ever since he had to stop juicing.
-
Bent-
I agree with Bassett (and, I think, with you): we don’t need a first-round WR, or even a second-rounder (though, as you suggest, there’s nothing wrong with picking one up in the later rounds).
What we need in the coming draft is what we needed all the way back in the preseason (and I said so at the time):
1. A quality corner to play opposite Revis (Lito’s had a couple of good games, but he’s been hurt for a chunk of the season, and when he wasn’t hurt, he was often mediocre.)
2. A quality punter.
3. Depth at the O line.
4. Depth at the D line.
Right now, the weakest link in our D is at corner back (the corner who covers opponents’ #2 receiver).
And the weakest link in ST is our punter.
As for offense, we have plenty of weapons through the air–JCo, Edwards, Keller, Brad, and the Clown, not to mention: Leon, if he comes back healthy.
As for a pass rusher, sure, that would be gravy. But we have Jenkins coming back in 2010, and if he’s healthy, I think we’re more than set on the D line (except, as noted above, I’d like to see just a little more depth), and our LBs are, for the most part, awsome: Harris and Scott and Pace and, sometimes, even Thomas can be dominant.
-
lol, isn’t that funny. Merriman might need to go to a 4-3.
-
if we can trade up and take taylor mayes from usc we shoud do it….i see in most mock drafts him falling to like the early 20s and he is a flat out playmaking saftey with so much speed and 230 pounds to go with it and we all know that rex loves his safties to make big plays like ed reed
-
Ganggreen…
Technically, Lito IS a first round corner playing opposite Revis
I would go best available 3-4 DE or OLB with the first pick…and then a classic slot receiver with the second pick.
-
Ben Nevis: I think a better investment might be in D line at least for now. With Jenkins and Douglas not getting any younger a real good DE can not only defend the pass and rush but can also make a CB’s job easier by getting to the QB. We a solid secondary with a big time playmaker.
We really could use a playermaker at D line as well
-
Without a new CBA the Jets won’t be gaining anything in free agency. In the upcoming uncapped year, teams that make it to the divisional round of the playoffs have severe restrictions on who they can sign as free agents. I’m not 100% on this but the Jets might only be able to sign players from the Saints, Vikes, and Colts.
As for the rest of the mock draft:
St. Louis RamsRecord: 1-15Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Nobody questions that the top need for the Rams is a quarterback. But unless St. Louis trades down — an extremely difficult proposition on multiple levels — it shouldn’t take a quarterback with its first pick. Suh is maybe the most dominating defensive tackle I’ve seen in 32 years of doing this. He can be effective immediately for the Rams, and they may address the QB with a trade.Detroit LionsRecord: 2-14Gerald McCoy*, DT, Oklahoma
Getting McCoy both fills a big need for the Lions and is an extraordinarily good consolation prize for any team unable to get Suh. McCoy makes his living in opponents’ backfields and is such a talent he could have landed in this position last year had he declared as a redshirt sophomore.Tampa Bay BuccaneersRecord: 3-13Eric Berry*, S, Tennessee
This is very early for a safety to go off the board, but Berry is that kind of talent. A player compared often (not unfairly) to Ed Reed, Berry is a difference-making safety headed to a league that has seen those types (Reed, Troy Polamalu, Bob Sanders) become more and more prevalent in recent years.Washington RedskinsRecord: 4-12Sam Bradford*, QB, Oklahoma
Mike Shanahan and the Redskins can get a quarterback here who might have been the top player taken had he opted to come out last year. The Redskins need to find their franchise quarterback, and when healthy, Bradford is an exceptionally accurate passer with an underrated arm. Shanahan also hit on his last QB selection when he drafted Jay Cutler in Denver.Kansas City ChiefsRecord: 4-12Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
I think the Chiefs could use help at safety as well, but Berry likely won’t fall this far, and they’d be reaching on either of the two other safeties with first-round grades. Okung could solve two problems, making him a good value — he could step in at LT and allow the Chiefs to move Brandon Albert to the right side. A pick that can pay immediate dividends for the Chiefs.Seattle SeahawksRecord: 5-11Derrick Morgan*, DE, Georgia Tech
Many in Seattle will view the offensive line as a greater need, but Morgan fills another huge hole for a team that simply couldn’t get to the quarterback in 2009. He represents great value because he can rush the passer, is productive against the run and can even drop back — a versatile talent. Pete Carroll knows defense and should love what Morgan can offer.Cleveland BrownsRecord: 5-11Joe Haden*, CB, Florida
I’m not convinced the Browns will be willing to draft a quarterback simply because the position is unsettled. In Haden, they can’t go wrong with by far the top CB on the board, a player they can plug in from day one. A deft cover corner and great tackler, Haden is the total package.Oakland RaidersRecord: 5-11Anthony Davis*, OT, Rutgers
Davis might not be the most complete tackle in the first round just yet, but he is the most naturally gifted and should get better. Great feet, ideal size and he has the ability to maul defenders in the run game. After a whiff in the first round last year, the Raiders should address a big need here.Buffalo BillsRecord: 6-10Jimmy Clausen*, QB, Notre Dame
People will debate Clausen’s merits long after he shakes the commissioner’s hand, but he has continued to improve, has displayed toughness, has an NFL arm and, perhaps most importantly, has experience under center in a pro-style offense. That was a key for Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez, and is a huge consideration for scouts.Denver Broncos (from Chicago)Record: 7-9Dez Bryant*, WR, Oklahoma State
In all likelihood, Brandon Marshall is headed elsewhere, so the Broncos will attempt to fill the void with the best deep threat in the draft. Bryant has great size and was unstoppable in the Big 12. He represents an immediate weapon in the passing game.Jacksonville JaguarsRecord: 7-9Jason Pierre-Paul*, DE, South Florida
This is no place to draft a guy like Tim Tebow just to sell tickets. Pierre-Paul could be the Mario Williams of this draft class, a raw talent but one with remarkable athleticism and an incredible burst off the line. Could be a terror for QBs in the future and maybe he’s local enough for some.Miami DolphinsRecord:7-9Rolando McClain*, LB, Alabama
A potential home run for Miami, a team that needs an inside linebacker and could get the best one in the whole draft after the top 10. The Dolphins also could go after Bryant if he were to fall to them here, because they also must address WR.San Francisco 49ersRecord: 8-8Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
I consider the right tackle position a big need for the 49ers, and getting Williams here should strengthen them immediately both in the run game and as they look to further develop a potentially dangerous passing game with Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis.Seattle Seahawks (from Denver)Record: 5-11C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
He’s not an offensive lineman, but Spiller could be a Reggie Bush-like option for the Seahawks. For a coach uniquely familiar with what Bush can do, Spiller is a missing home run threat in the run game, a good receiver and a valuable returner. Fans will want O-line help, and I’d expect it in Round 2.New York GiantsRecord: 8-8Carlos Dunlap*, DE, Florida
This is a high-value pick for the Giants, whose defensive line depth I feel has been overstated. There are makeup questions surrounding Dunlap, but for much of this past season, he was considered the premier pass-rusher in the college game. He has the potential to be like Jevon Kearse.San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina)Record: 8-8Earl Thomas*, S, Texas
The 49ers need help in pass coverage, and Thomas fits because he’s a great value here, whereas reaching for a CB at No. 16 wouldn’t represent good value at all. Thomas isn’t a huge guy but can cover a tremendous amount of real estate.Tennessee TitansRecord: 8-8Everson Griffen*, DE, USC
Pierre-Paul likely won’t fall this far, so the Titans get a gifted underclassman who looked like a pro coming out of high school and now is living up to his potential. He already has an NFL frame, and when Griffen is consistent, he’s a strong pass-rusher.Pittsburgh SteelersRecord: 9-7Bryan Bulaga*, OT, Iowa
Pittsburgh clearly needs help up front if it wants to return to power running and protecting the quarterback, and Bulaga is an emerging tackle with great feet from a pro-style system. The Steelers will improve immediately, and he wears the black and gold well already.Atlanta FalconsRecord: 9-7Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
The Falcons could use some help at OLB, and Kindle’s continued improvement throughout the season is appealing. He’s not quite in the class of Brian Orakpo, but he is a similar type of player and has proved to be very physical.Houston TexansRecord: 9-7Brian Price*, DT, UCLA
Price is hidden away a bit in such a deep class of defensive linemen, but he’s a disruptive force who utilizes great leverage. He should add depth to an improving defense.Cincinnati BengalsRecord: 10-6Aaron Hernandez*, TE, Florida
They need to give Carson Palmer options in the passing game aside from who already is there, and Hernandez is the most athletic TE available, a guy with surprising run-after-catch ability. The favorite target of Tebow at Florida, he could offer immediate help in the passing game.New England PatriotsRecord: 10-6Ricky Sapp, OLB, Clemson
The Patriots clearly need help when it comes to getting to opposing quarterbacks, and Sapp is an ideal fit on the edge in the 3-4. He’s the kind of athlete who can adjust to being upright and flat-out knows how to get to the quarterback.Green Bay PackersRecord: 11-5Taylor Mays, S, USC
If you had told Green Bay in August that it could get Mays at No. 23 overall, the Packers would have been thrilled. An extraordinary athlete, Mays might have suffered against expectations, but the Pack hit a home run with Clay Matthews Jr. out of USC last year, and Mays both fills a need and has great potential.Philadelphia EaglesRecord: 11-5Navorro Bowman*, OLB, Penn State
The Eagles need an athletic OLB, and they get a lot of value by landing Bowman here. Bowman lacks size, but any parsing on measurables can’t overcome his great play on film. Could end up as the best at his position in this class.Baltimore RavensRecord: 9-7Jermaine Gresham*, TE, Oklahoma
Gresham is so good that while he sat out his junior year, I left him on the Big Board the whole time. Now healthy, he’s a great find this late in the first round and a perfect target for Joe Flacco as an heir to Todd Heap. At a hair over 6-6 and 262 pounds, he’s the total package at TE.Arizona CardinalsRecord: 10-6Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
I see this position as the second-biggest need for the Cardinals, and Williams is a great value here. Tremendously strong in the lower body, he is a disruptive force against the run.Dallas CowboysRecord: 11-5Bruce Campbell*, OT, Maryland
Jerry Jones knows he needs to address the tackle position after the debacle he witnessed against Minnesota in the divisional round of the playoffs, and Campbell, while still learning, is a tremendous talent at this position.San Diego ChargersRecord: 13-3Jonathan Dwyer*, RB, Georgia Tech
With the possible departure of LaDainian Tomlinson on the horizon, Dwyer represents the player who can handle 20-plus carries in an offense that already has a great speed back in Darren Sproles. Dwyer has ideal size and shows explosiveness.New York JetsRecord: 9-7Golden Tate*, WR, Notre Dame
The Jets must give Mark Sanchez some weapons in the passing game, and while Tate has question marks on his ability to separate, he is more physical than many think and has always been a playmaker. In the mold of Laveranues Coles.Minnesota VikingsRecord: 12-4Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
Need meets value here. Robinson is the second-best corner in the draft, and Minnesota should be happy to grab him this late. Robinson has the chance to step in and contribute.New Orleans SaintsRecord: 13-3Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State
Odrick is an ideal pick here for the Saints, who are looking to add stability to the rush defense. His presence helped standout LBs Bowman and Sean Lee run free up in Happy Valley, and the Saints will ask for the same.Indianapolis ColtsRecord: 14-2Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
Graham was a one-man show for the Wolverines, leading the nation in tackles for loss as a senior. Always in the backfield, he’s a guy who can learn under master pass-rushers in Indy and build on the tradition. He’s been on my Big Board all year, so a good value this late. -
we need line depth not a WR. maybe a cornerback
-
Without a new CBA the Jets won’t be gaining anything in free agency. In the upcoming uncapped year, teams that make it to the divisional round of the playoffs have severe restrictions on who they can sign as free agents. I’m not 100% on this but the Jets might only be able to sign players from the Saints, Vikes, and Colts.

At any rate, there is not going to be much in FA and the draft itself is not very top-heavy at all. If teams draft right, they can get a starter in rounds 1-4 and some real quality backups. It gets more and more like this each year.
-
I would second taking Taylor Mays….the guy is an absolute beast and in the right system and with the right coach(aka Rex ) he would be a premier safety in the league……he has all the physical tools and much more, hunger to hurt and very underrated in coverage. I would trade up to take him no doubt about it…
however I am a huge Notre Dame fan and saw every game Tate has played on collegiate level and let me tell you something….he is an Absolute monster….his skills definitely translate to the NFL. He has the strongest set of hands I have ever seen and the guy never and i mean never goes down from the first tackler…..i do see him in the Steve Smith mold who can be used as a great punt returner as well…..he needs to learn to run better, sharper routes. on the plus side, he is a beast with the ball in the air and after the catch he is Terrel Owens in his absolute prime time.
-
I stated this before- Pace had 7 sacks last year and 8 sacks this year missing the first 4 games and not having big jenks taking up double teams. He is our rush OLB/ DE and he is not good in coverage and we have him locked up for a couple more years at high price.
Our biggest need in my opinion would be CB- some have said this kid Donavan Warren out of michigan is like Revis and most have him dropping to the mid 20′s to early 2nd round cause most have Joe Haden as #1 CB- after that i keep seeing so many different opinions on the rest of the CB’s.
DE- Devitto is our DE of the future of clogging up blockers. We can use a replacement for Ellis, but he has excelled the last 2 years with 7-8 sacks each year, once again, no jenkins most of the season this year. Next season Ellis is only making 3.5 mil in his final year, but he will be around 33-34 so nobody will be giving him big money, we should be able to bring him back for a couple more years if he has another solid year next year. Name another 3-4 DE your would rather have that can stop the run and sack the QB? -
ellis is one of the most underrated defensive players of the last decade. the guy has moved around from 4-3 to 3-4 to 4-6 and just continues to make plays.
-
Darl-
I agree: we need depth on our D line, and I said so (twice) in my post above.
But with Big Jenx coming back, the weakest link in our D is at corner. A quality QB is going to take advantage of the match-up against Lito. That’s what happened this year, and, yes, in a couple of games, LS played well. But in most of the games, he was either mediocre, or he was out with an injury.
In other words, Jenkins should be able to plug up the hole in our rushing D next season.
Yes, another playmaker on the D line would be great, but I wouldn’t place it as our top priority.
-
Brad-
You write: “Our biggest need in my opinion would be CB. . .”
I agree, and said the same thing in my (two) previous posts above.
We also appear to agree about the D line. What we need there now is depth. We have a monster in Jenx coming back next year, and the rest of the line is playing very well.
-
I know there’s a perception that our DBs, with the obvious exception of Revis, are shaky but I’m not sure it’s true. Stats Inc rates DBs with a stat they call burn rate which is the number of catches a DB allows versus the number of balls thrown at his receiver.
Revis is of course No. 1 with a 37% burn rate. Lowery is number 3 in the league at 40.7% and Lito is 6th with a rate of 45.6%. This is the number 1 D against the pass after all.
I think another corner is pretty low on the priority list right now.
-
On the other hand though I have no problem with Tate if there is not a viable first round type pass rusher on the board at that point
I would rather have someone good like Tate or Shipley, than a repeat of Vernon Gholston
BTW Mr T was on with Mike Fran on WFAN and Fransceca was giving him credit for all our studs like Mangold, Brick, DH and Leon because when Mr T drafted Gholston he has to take the heat. Mr T just laughed…lol
Oh yea and I have the utmost trust in Mr T come draft day. On Mike D Up today he said that the Jets will “continue to be aggressive, and do everything within reason to win a championship” Gotta love Mr Mike Tannebaum
-
AKA Jack I was just looking at that and thinking the same thing… here’s the link for anyone else interested http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/8882/jets-cbs-dont-feel-the-burn
-
AKA Jack
You are 100% right. From a pure coverage standpoint Lito, Lowery and Strickland have been the best group of DBs in the NFL this season
Though Mr T was on with Francesca just moments ago and said you will see this team evolve to bring in as much depth in the secondary as humanly possible because Rex loves sending fast DBs at the QB
-
Eddie D-
I’m not saying I don’t want to see another quality CB or stud safety in the Ed Reed mold, I’m just saying in order of priority I would really like to see a good slot receiver on this team. It was a huge part of the offense when the season started and once Stuckey was sent to Cleveburg it left a huge whole and made the whole offense plan change.
Eh, who knows. With Tanny at the controls they may put together a package and trade up for all I know.
-
trade a 2nd rd pick for boldin and that gives us a great passing game if sanchez comes along soon, which this playoff run will help him do. that is filling a need with a draft pick which people want them to do in the first place, and if the cardinals thought about trading him to the bears last year for a 2nd rd pick. trade or sing a good receiver instead of wasting time waiting for them to become good. they can still go for restricted free agents but there will be compensation, what is the asking price for dumervil? broncos might want to keep orton and maybe even marshall, we could stand to benefit from that. even marshall, maybe trade braylon and get marshall because broncos would love to get rid of him, and he is a big upgrade over braylon… rfa’s worth a look are dumervil, miles austin, vincent jackson, marshall, how do they figure out what the compensation would be for guys like these? i’d give up a high pick for most of them, a 1st for some
-
hole not whole.
Picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
-
I think everyone agrees the Jets biggest need is a legit pass rusher.
But there are also an abundance of good safeties in this years draft.I wouldn’t mind getting rid of hollywood and moving up to draft taylor mays.
-
I think our three biggest needs next year are in order:
1 Corner
2 Pass Rusher
3 Slot ReceiverIf there is a corner in the draft that has nice size (which there are alot that are 5’11 or 6′) and we think he can be a great number 2 corner, then we need to take him with our first pick. Patrick Robinson or Perrish Cox or Donovan Warren would be great!
-
Also a slot receiver….ala crebet or welker type would be nice.
-
I don’t think Lito was that bad.
Arenas might be a good pick though for returns and to get Cotch out of return duties. He’s looked pretty bad at that this year. -
Kudos to Ben Nevis. While I would put CB behind OL or DL, I would not put someone who could start opposite Revis behind a benchwarmer big body.
We should not draft Ray Guy’s clone with our first round pick. Too much cost. We should not draft a WR given the overall success of first round WR, our LB are solid, and if we keep Smith or Leon we don’t need a RB.
Show me a team that does not need OL and DL and I will think you don’t understand football.
Harlan

i say draft jared odrick or damian williams rd1 and then get perrish cox rd2

a pass rusher completes the d?

Jay-
Thanks for that link.

Jack-
I guess this is a case where the stats give a very different sense of things than watching the games.
What I remember, for instance, is Strickland giving up two major pass plays at the end of the Atlanta game, and essentially losing that game for us.
On one of those passes, the last one to the TE in the end zone, DS completely blew the coverage–he was nowhere near the receiver when the ball was caught–so I don’t know if the stats would consider him being the one who was burned. Especially as the DBs were in zone coverage at the time.
Which is to say, thiere’s one reservation I have about those stats: they don’t seem to give you any sense of WHEN within the game these burns occurred, and how critical they were.
In other words, if our DBs (other than Revis) shut down opponents’ receivers for about 50 to 60% of the game, but then allow a completion or two–or allow a TD–when the game is on the line, then the stats don’t really tell us very much.
But if in some way the stats did take this into consideration (ie, burns when the game is on the line), then, yes, those stats would suggest that we’re more solid at corner that I had thought.
My biggest fear, for instance, going into Sunday’s game against the Colts is that Lito won’t be able to cover either of their #2 receivers, and our other DBs won’t be able to cover Clark.
In fact, I think this is one of the keys to the game.
-
Harlan-
Thanks for the kind words.
-
Ben Nevis-
True enough on your feeling on stats, they don’t always tell the whole truth and sure, I’d love to have another lock down corner opposite Revis, I’m just not sure it’s our most pressing need. The way I see it, we at least have corners and DL and OL guys on the roster, we don’t have a slot receiver and if Leon isn’t the same or gets taken off specials to save on wear and tear, we don’t have a KO or punt returner.
And while I don’t live by stats alone when you start to put a bunch together like No. 1 passing D, 8 passing touchdowns given up all year, fewest yards per attempt and fewest yards overall, I just think we have more pressing needs at the moment.
By the way, Bucky Brooks over at NFL.com has the Jets taking Damian Williams, WR from USC in the first.
-
Jack
Very true. Honestly at this point, whatever Mr T and Rex decide to do, how the hell could we argue with them?! lol
-
Jack-
Okay, fair enough.
But as far as drafting a WR in the first round, I’d have to agree with Bassett and Bent.
I think we have enough weapons right now in the passing game with JCo, Braylon, Keller, the Clown, and a healthy Leon.
As Bent said, it would be fine to draft a WR in one of the later rounds, but my sense of it is that if Sanchez continues to mature next year (as he has in the past four games), then our passing attack should be quite good indeed.
-
what about Cody from Alabama. He would be a good 3-4 Nose. I think Rex could get the best out of him.
-
Jack-
Headed out now (to play poker), so we’ll have to continue this another time.
Nice exchanging posts with you, though.
-
I like Shipley alot also. If he runs a good 40 time at the combine, hes going in the first round. He runs good routes, has great hands and is TOUGH as nails
These mock drafts all make us nuts, a couple of guys at some positions of interest
I think we may be able to get a Brandon Graham or Ricky Sapp at the WOLB- the question will be though, as a OLB with Rex, you HAVE TO be smart enough to cover in zone. You cant play for him if you cant cover
I dont think CB is the biggest need nor do I think its the least, a good cover guy that fits the Samari Rolle type player is Patric Robinson from Fla St. Those guys always turn out good man corners
-
http://walterfootball.com/draft2010DE3-4.php
One of my sites i like to use is walterfootball- they give some nice tib bits of info on each player. some solid guys we might want to pick up in the 2nd rd. or later in 5-6th rd. to add some DL depth.
-
Go Defensive End or O-lineman in Rd 1
-
a serious pass rusher is definite need. it’d be nice if we could sign someone like julius peppers but with the uncapped season ahead that could be a tough task. if we want a solid slot receiver and someone who may not go so early, i feel that Jordan Shipley from Texas has the skill set to fit into the slot position for us.
-
Eddie D-
I wouldn’t mind adding another OLB with some cover skills. I’d also like to see the experiment with Gholston in this position come to an end. I’d like to see them have him put his hand in the dirt again and see if he can regain some of that rushing magic he had in college.
He’s bigger than Freeny and I don’t think he’s ever going to get it at OLB.
-
weren’t the patriots going to get peppers for a second round pick last season? if we can get him for that price now go for it
-
I think Tate would be a good fit to be a slot WR like a harvin. Ik many would disagree bc we have Leon, but we need a true slot receiver. Tate catches almost everything that comes his way. Also, Shipley from Texas would be another good slot option. but im all for trying to get bryant/ williams, before Tate or Shipley
-
trade Rhodes for Osi or kiwanuka, trade up for taylor mays, sign pepper or that DL from arizona thats a free agent…
-
Is the game still on for Sunday or are we going straight to April?
-
draft Freddie Barnes aka the steal of the draft…
-
I have to disagree with your assessment. To stay brief, I have no idea where you get the idea that Tate struggles to get seperation. He’s a burner and one of the faster receivers and better deep threats in this draft.
Also, if the Jets were considering trading back into the first round to get Harvin last year, wouldn’t it make sense for them to target a similar player? The only player they have added in the meantime is Edwards who is nothing like a Harvin.
Besides that, receivers can take some time to develop and nobody knows what kind of future Braylon Edwards has with the Jets beyond next season. And the Jets don’t have a legitimate third receiver. Why not draft that third receiver and add a potential long-term starter in the process?
There are a multitude of needs the Jets could fill and a bunch of players who fit those needs, and Tate is certainly one of them. If the staff determines he is the BPA, then go for it.
-
Jack
I agree. He just doesnt have the hips and cover skills needed to play OLB in the 3-4.
But the kid is MASSIVE. I thought he played the run alright in the 4 games he started w/o Calvin. Maybe we could use him like the Giants did with Justin Tuck when they had Strahan and Osi. Ya know, inside 3 technique bull rusher on passing downs.
Its a real shame being that strong and fast and having absolutely no pass rushing moves on the edge…sigh
-
How about trading down and stockpiling picks?
-
We need to adress pass-rushing OLB, RT, LG, DT, CB
-
I agree with most of the posters here. Would like to see a D-lineman, or LB, or an O lineman. I disagree with negative opinions about Tate however. I’ve seen him a bunch and I think he’s going to be a dynamite pro player. If the front office went with him I wouldn’t be carping too much.
-
Whoever it is that they bring in, they have to fit the mold of this team.
Every guy on this team is TOUGH. And if you dont play hard and physical, Rex will put your behind on the pine.
Id rather have a guy who never missed a game in college, never beat his girlfriend and who doesnt have phenomenal combine numbers (Shipley, Tate) than an combine superstar, who is lazy and doesn’t play hard all the time (i.e Carlos Dunlap Florida)
-
A dominating corner opposite revis would be awesome. That will make our pass rushers much better.
I don’t think we’ll pick a WR in the first round, just cause we are a run 1st team. And barely use what we already have.
-
I like the idea of drafting Golden Tate. I watched most of Notre Dame’s games this season and he simply has a knack for making big plays. I saw a poster write about the need for a Wes Welker type, and that has drawn a lot of Jordan Shipley talk (who I would consider a nice consolation if the Jets don’t ultimately end up with Tate). But Golden Tate IS a Wes Welker type. He’s tough, he can break tackles and can catch the ball in traffic.
The Jets also can’t afford to be too reliant on Leon Washington returning as the same dynamic force he was. I absolutely hope he does, and I don’t have reason to doubt that he will, but you have to be realistic about a running back coming back from a broken leg. Tate would fill/share the role as the KR/PR with Leon and play receiver out of the slot.
I saw a different poster bring up Sanchez’s success throwing to Chansi Stuckey at the beginning of the year and I think he might have been on to something. I don’t regret dealing him for Edwards, and I actually hope we re-sign Edwards along with drafting Tate. The Jets have to continue to build a dynamic offense around Mark Sanchez and provide him all the necessary tools to continue his progress and become an elite QB. Tate is an excellent slot receiver and a play-maker in the open field. The facts are these, the Jets have a No. 1 ranked defense and a No. 20 something offense. Keep building the offense and add line depth or defensive players later in the draft.
-
NAVARRO BOWMAN – NASTY OLB FROM PSU
-
I agree that WR is not the priority in the draft, but dont think that Golden Tate isn’t worthy of a 1st round selection. He was the best receiver in the country this year. Hes going to be a great pro. He is about 5’11 but he plays 6’5
-
I say our Defense is dominating already and though we can use upgrades in certain positions, I’d much rather see another fast/dominant wide out opposite Edwards as a priority and use Cotchery in the slot.
-
Johnny Mac
I dont have a problem drafting a WR, just as long as he is the Best Player Available.
We really dont have pressing gaping holes on this team. We just need a little tweak and tuning here and there.
I have to say Im pretty confident in the way the Jets have drafted that they know what they need and how to get it
-
100% agreed, Eddie. I also like your stance on drafting guys who will play tough under Rex. I’m starting to think that aside from his massive physique, Vernon Gholston is the Eddy Curry of the NFL.
-
Johnny Mac
HAHAHAHA on Gholston… that is great!!!!!
-
Golden Tate would be a great addition as he is an all around player. Great runner and receiver and can play QB in the wildcat. But he is only 5’10″. Maybe later in the draft. The JETS need to take a DE in the first round of the draft.
-
Guys remember
Whatever DE/OLB we draft has to be able to rush the passer AND be at least competent in zone coverage
Part of what makes Rex and our D so good is the fact that Pace, who IMO is our best pass rusher, can drop off and cover while Jimmy Leonhard or Eric Smith runs free at the QB.
We may not lead the league in sacks, but we definitely have the most hurried throws and 3 N outs in the league. Sometimes stupid throws or decisions are better than sacks
-
I just read this on another blog, is this true? Bent I figured you would know.
According to multiple bloggers, beat writers, etc., the final result of the Lito Sheppard trade was the Eagles getting the Jets 4th round pick and the Jets getting the Eagles 5th round pick:
The conditions on the Lito Sheppard trade are final. The Jets must send a 2010 fourth-rounder to the Eagles, who must return a fifth rounder. The cost also included a fifth-rounder in 2009.
per Rich Cimini, NY Daily News
Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jet…#ixzz0dCvDFDGLHowever, the Eagles have ALREADY traded their fifth round pick to St. Louis!
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4580705
As far as I know, NFL rules state that, in such a case where a team conditionally owes another team a pick in a certain round, if that pick is unavailable, the team owed the pick receives the team’s NEXT HIGHEST selection. However, that would be Philadelphia’s fourth round selection, which is higher than the pick the Jets owe the Eagles!
-
I would like to see the Jets get Brandon Graham the DE/OLB from Michigan. He is a very good player and you know how Michigan players do (David Harris) (;
-
Unless someone special falls, I think it is best DE, NT, or OL. DE J Odrick Penn St, DE C Wooten Northwestern, DT D Williams Tenn, T Cody Alabama, OL M Iupati Idaho…..OLB like Jerry Hughes TCU…This year, wouldn’t mind trading back a bit to try to pick up another 3 or 4 and get OL/DL/DB depth…Would love if S Earl Thomas fell….mixed on T Mays but keeping open mind….Do NOT want 1st rd WR this year…
-
JayM,
If that’s the case, that would be hilarious….
-
JayM, that’d be a big time mistake by the Philly GM if that’s the case.
Arte the any rumors flying around of which players might get cut from other teams due to next year being cap free? I think there aren’t any ristrictions on us signing those guys, right?
-
Cody from alabama. nuff said
-
i dont think this team needs that much…i wouldnt mind if tanny trades quantity for quality again
-
let’s draft Donovan Warren out of Michigan. Put him opposite Revis and we will have the best secondary in the game.
-
Merriman ? was he even on the field last Sunday?? .. I agree with a lot of people here .. get a “Rex Ryan”- type of animal to rush the passer .. a lineman for sure ..
what # pick was Freeney when he came out of Syracuse ? we can get someone good here ..
-
Freeney was 11th
-
You guys should look at Golden Tate’s 2008 and 2009 footage on YouTube.com and you will see why he’s the best receiver in the country… plain and simple
-
….. Also please pay close attention to the double AND triple coverage on Golden throughout the 2009 season. See how Golden Tate embarrassed Taylor Mays and other USC defenders during the ND v USC game.
-
I am getting used to Tanny making a wild move on draft day. Don’t be surprised if he makes a wild move to get one of the stars in this draft. It seems like, after a small group of standout players – the rest of the draft is a crap-shoot.

Thanks, but no thanks.
