Okay, NOW I understand why Brian Schottenheimer turned down the Bills interview, his dad wanted the job.
Contrary to the diplomatic comments he made on his radio show, Marty Schottenheimer actually did want the Buffalo Bills head-coaching job.
Badly.
Bills owner Ralph Wilson, however, wasn’t interested, sources close to Schottenheimer informed me Tuesday after the club introduced Chan Gailey as their man.
Schottenheimer had a strong desire to return to coaching after three years away from the sidelines and had an ally in former Bills general manager Buddy Nix. They became close while working together with the San Diego Chargers.
I believe that Marty and his son Brian are close, I’ve seen Marty in the locker room postgame a few times, so it’s not hard to imagine that with his father very interested in the gig, Brian Schottenheimer declined from even interviewing — out of deference to his dad. This might have been one of his dad’s last chances to get back into the head coaching seat, so I don’t blame Brian one bit. Given the circumstance I would have done the exact same thing.
We knew something was rotten in Denmark because up until now, Schotty has interviewed for every head coaching vacancy invitation thrown his way. Everyone knows he’s an ambitious guy, so why the sudden change? It points to his dad’s interest, clearly.
The only other differences this time around is of course the head coach, and probably to a lesser extent the new toys (i.e Sanchez, Edwards, Greene) he gets to play with. So to whomever is Schotty’s agent and/or PR person and deflty moved through this … kudos to them … very well done. The image of Brian Schottenheimer as a successful and HAPPY coordinator was widely received is one that owners and GMs will remember well in advance before next January rolls around.

I can’t believe the Bills wanted Chan Gailey over Marty Schottenheimer! Marty would have at least made the Bills contenders pretty quickly. Ralph WIlson is an idiot. At least we don’t have to worry about the Bills contending for a division title any time soon.

Agree with Dylan. HUGE mistake by the Bills. For all his playoff failings, Marty has proven he can build a team. Gailey never has.

Marty would have cost alot more money – the real reason gailey got signed over him

I detested Marty Schott for years, but there is no denying he could take a terrible football team and make them into a good regular season team. One game to play for everything there is no coach I would want less than Marty, but there is something to be said for gettting guys to play for you when the year before they were losers
Thanks Marty, now Schotty isnt going anywhere, and we dont have to break up the continuity on this budding powerhouse team

Chan Gailey? Should have gone with someone new and young–like a Leslie Frazier or Ron Rivera. They would probably work cheap. But, I agree–we won’t have to worry about Buffalo for a while. One less worry. Though Mike Nolan taking over as DC for Miami may be cause for some concern.

Why the hell would they want Chan Gailey over Marty?
Good to see the Bills continue to make bad moves that guarantee they will be nothing better than a mediocre team.

East Coast Raiders is what they sound like to me…perennial losers!!! Nice job Bills….!!!
