Opinion: A Tough Decision, But the Right One

by Bassett on February 28th, 2010 at 9:27 pm

jones-celebrates.jpg

Thoughts on the loss of Thomas Jones to this team in 2010.

Right Place, Right Time — Thomas Jones was Mike Tannenbaum’s first real big trade for a player. The deal consisted of the Jets and Bears swapping some second rounders, (net of one third rounder from a value standpoint). Think about that for a second. The Jets got a guy who led the backfield for three years as a savvy veteran and was an integral leader to this team for the price of a third round pick. Yes please. When the history book is written on Tannenbaum’s career, I think this was the first move that we saw from the Jets in which they went against the convention of overvaluing draft picks in exchange for veteran players … Kris Jenkins, Lito Sheppard, and even Braylon Edwards could be bundled into this building strategy the Jets have used well in recent years.

2010 Prospect Meetings

by Weeks on February 28th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Bent approached me with a very good idea: compile a master list of the prospects the Jets have met with. And that is what I have decided to do. Below you will find names and a link (player’s name will be linked) that contains information on that player.

You can leave comments with your thoughts on a certain player. You can also leave a comment letting me know if the Jets recently met with a prospect who isn’t on the list yet.

WR, Golden Tate

RB, Andre Dixon

DE, Willie Young

WR, David Reed

DE/OLB, Greg Hardy

Prospect Watch: WR Naaman Roosevelt

by Weeks on February 28th, 2010 at 11:59 am

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Buffalo product, Naaman Roosevelt [via Jon P & Harry H]

Projected Round: 6th Round

Measurables: Stands at 6’0. Weighs in at 190 lbs.

Positives: Roosevelt has good hands that can be reliable. He can be quick, get seperation and can be elusive with the ball. During his time at Buffalo he was very productive although the loss of Drew Willy did hurt his production. He is a very intelligent player and has special teams potential.

Negatives: He catches too many passes with his body and his blocking skills leave a lot to be desired. He can lose concentration at times and he could stand to bulk his frame up.

The Bottom Line: Roosevelt didn’t have a stellar showing at the Senior Bowl and he hasn’t received an invite to the Combine either. In spite of this he does have talent and in my opinion Roosevelt could be a late round sleeper that would be able fill the Jets vacant slot position.

Roosevelt Highlights:

I apologize for the lack of footage on Roosevelt however I was able to find this amazing play that shows just how good Roosevelt can be.

Notes from Ryan’s News Conference

by Weeks on February 28th, 2010 at 10:41 am

As I previously mentioned yesterday, Rex Ryan had a chance to speak at the combine and talked about a variety of topics that included Vernon Gholston. Below are some of the other highlights from Ryan’s conference:

Notes via Graham:

Notes via Cimini:

  • Ryan “eulogized” TJ.
  • Ryan didn’t want to open his mouth about Aso or AT in fear of possible tampering charges.
  • Rex is “proud” of Sanchez who is healing well. It seems the Jets may throw a bit more this season despite their “Ground and Pound” mentality.
  • Sexy Rexy talks about his wardrobe malfunction — appearently he isn’t too upset considering he still gets hit on by women.
  • He pointed out that he is no Boy Scout but he is maturing.

Salary Cap Update: Restrictions, Schmestrictions

by Bent on February 28th, 2010 at 8:42 am

Sad though it is to see TJ let loose, which we’ll undoubtedly be providing you with more coverage of later, who wants some good news?

The salary (non)-cap situation continues to move every day and the the latest development could dramatically increase the pool of players available to the Jets this offseason. We’ve continually said that these final eight restrictions are not as restricting as is being widely reported, but it may be that they are even less restricting than we thought.

Florio’s latest article contains this tasty morsel, direct from the horse’s mouth:

Per NFL director of corporate communications Dan Masonson, “If an RFA is not tendered, he’s a free agent, but not a UFA. . . . So Final Eight teams can sign him.”

This is not what we thought, as teams seemed to believe the opposite as recently as last week, so this is a surprise. To reiterate, any such players can apparently be signed freely by the Jets and they don’t need to lose a free agent of their own first.

It’s possible that some of the decisions on which RFA’s should not be tendered were made by teams unaware of this rule. For example, the Chargers may have decided not to tender Darren Sproles in order to prevent the Colts from being able to sign him as a UFA. If that’s the case, they still have until March 5th to change their mind, although in many cases, the only RFA tender available will be Right of First Refusal only, because all other tenders require a salary bump to 110% of last year’s earnings.

One side effect of this revelation is that a non-tendered RFA that gets picked up will not be a UFA loss for a final 8 team that needs to match each UFA signing with a loss. This only really affects Drew Coleman, although we had previously wondered whether the Jets had considered non-tendering Braylon Edwards or Leon Washington for this purpose.

After the jump is a summary of the options open to the Jets this offseason.

Are the Jets Rolling the Dice with Leon?

by Bassett on February 28th, 2010 at 7:23 am

Heading out now, but I’ll give my thoughts on the Thomas Jones announcement later today, stay tuned.

The Post is reporting that the Jets will meet with Leon’s agent Alvin Keels today

The Jets are expected to meet here today with the agent for running back Leon Washington to discuss the restricted free agent’s immediate future.

Washington, who wants a long-term deal, is likely to be tendered at a second-round level by the Jets that would pay him $1.759 million this season and not at the first-round level that would guarantee him $2.512 million.

Interesting.  This is a small maneuver, and in the wake of releasing Jones, you’d think they could pay more.  I think that the Jets are taking a calculated risk on this one.  While I think they’d be willing to pay him the $2.5 for a season, I think the Jets are trying to bait other teams into making offers on him, setting the market and determining whether they’d rather a draft pick should the offers get too exorbitant.

Breaking News: Jets to Release Thomas Jones

by Bent on February 27th, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Citing “Team Sources”, ESPN’s Adam Schefter breaks the following news on his twitter feed:

Thomas Jones will not be restructuring his contract with Jets + will be released this week. He’ll be a free agent March 5th

Jones cannot be released until the 5th, for cap reasons, but his roster bonus was apparently not due until March 9th.

Thanks for three great years, TJ. We know you aren’t going to be easy to replace.

Time is Ticking for the Ghost

by Weeks on February 27th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Rex Ryan had a chance to speak at the combine answering a variety of questions that included the bird filipping incident and TJ while he also dodged questions about Asomugha and A.T (in fear of tampering). Ryan would take some time to talk about Vernon Gholston and how time is running short for the Ghost.

A reporter asked Ryan if 2010 would be a “make or break for [Gholston]. The third year, if he’s not doing then, you pretty much have to move on?”

“That’s an accurate statement,” Ryan said. “Generally, by the third year, you’ve got to see a guy really making strides. I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.”

“That’s still a work in progress,” Ryan said. “But I will say this: When we’re going back and looking at our [film], this young man deserves a better chance than we’re giving him. We need to give him more playing time. … We’ve got to get him in a rotation, playing more in our nickel packages and things like that.”

“He is entering his third year right now, so I think it’s more incomplete right now. I can’t say that I was right about thinking that he’d make an impact [in 2009] because the impact wasn’t there last year. But I think it’s a matter of time before we start seeing this young man do some things for us.”

Rex will always be a defensive guy at heart and it isn’t surprising to see him try and squeeze something out of Gholston. That said, Gholston has overstayed his welcome and unless he can produce something that will provide at least a dim light of hope this season, I doubt we’ll see him in Green and White after 2010.

Combine Beings In Earnest

by Bassett on February 27th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

tom_brady_nfl_draft_combine_2000.jpg

Coverage of the Combine in the past ten years has changed slightly, isn’t that right Tom?

Everyone Loves Dez– Despite his injury, everyone is salivating over Dez Bryant and his size, but it’s the off the field concerns that he’ll have to hurdle to be a top pick come April.

Like a Rock — Mitch Petrus tied a combine record with 45 reps (wow!) on the bench press. Jet Wayne Hunter threw up an impressive 37 back in 2003.

Tebow A-Go-Go — Tim Tebow has mentioned that he would change positions if his coach tells him to.

Short Arms, Low Stock — Going into the Combine, Brad Bulaga was thought to be an LT prospect, raising his stock. Now that his arms were measured at 33.25, how far will he drop? Will he be a RT or Guard prospect instead? Might be an answer for the Jets after 2010.

S-Jax to Stay PutQuote of the week was from Billy Devaney who used the work “poop-can” instead of another phrase. He should have used the real phrase.

Campbell a Commodity — Could Jason Campbell end up in Buffalo?
