Buzz: Could Pennington Return to NY?

Almost three months ago, we broached the idea of bringing Pennington back to New York. Sure it’s a long shot, but there’s a lot of reasons why it makes sense. The biggest hurdles are as follows: the organization addressing the method of his dispatch, Pennington’s willingness to be Sanchez’s backup, Pennington’s overall health and readiness (slide Mark, sliiiiide!!!) to play.

Rich Cimini of the Daily News spoke to Pennington in Miami this week, and here’s what he relates from the former Jet QB.

Caught up with former Jets QB Chad Pennington today at a youth-football clinic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Pennington said a few interesting things: His surgically repaired throwing shoulder is close to healthy. He intends to play in 2010. He’s okay with being a backup. And — get this — he would listen if the Jets called to offer a backup job. Remember, he will be an unrestricted free agent.

Pennington admitted it “would be tough, emotionally” to return to the team that fired him 19 months ago, but he left the door open.

The consummate pro, of course Pennington would say that to the press. But I do think there are good reasons for him to return to New York. Even so, it would seem that New York is not the only team that he’s leaving the door open for, the Dolphins (who might be done with him) and the Cardinals might be on his short list according to Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald.

Against a widespread belief that Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington’s two-year tenure in Miami is over, the two-time NFL comeback player of the year isn’t ready to say the same. Pennington wants to stay in South Florida.

The veteran has decided to make it his priority to stay with the Dolphins, even if it means backing up quarterback Chad Henne, two sources said this week. The Dolphins are willing to entertain the possibility under some circumstances.

At least two players on the Arizona Cardinals believe their team will be among the most interested parties if the Dolphins do not bring back Pennington. In the wake of Kurt Warner’s retirement, the Cardinals would potentially be interested in a proven veteran presence as a fallback option if Matt Leinart fails to fill the void.

To me, the Cardinals look like the best fit for Pennington, it’s a new team, he’s got a great set of receivers, and of the three it looks like the starting job is least secure in Arizona, so there’s more chance he’d actually play there.

Still, adding Pennington back to the Jets roster would be fantastic, the team could consolidate the number of backups they carry (right now there’s FOUR slots for QBs … ugh) and bring in a veteran presence to help Pennington Sanchez out in the quarterbacks room, and to help him make adjustments in-game. Pennington is familiar with many of the pieces on the offense, so for him to jump in for an emergency situation, I’d worry a lot less than having him there than I did with Kellen Clemens playing. Also with the Jets heavy run attack, Pennington is one of the best in the game at selling the play-action.

  1. Drew will now light himself on fire.

  2. Don’t do us any favors Chad. I’d actually prefer a QB who could throw the ball.

  3. Pennington is a class act. If healthy, he would be a welcome addition.

  4. NO PLZ GOD NO PLZ NO NO NONO

  5. I guess some of you guys prefer Kellen Clemens to Chad. As Ron Jaworski says, accuracy is the most important attribute for a QB and there is no denying that Chad is one of the most accurate QBs(ever).

  6. I like Chad and all, but I truly hope he gets the chance to play in Arizona, because we all know when Chad calls it quits he will be brought back to NY to officially retire.

Granted he would be a good mentor for Mark the QB kids. Granted he could offer a wealth full of knowledge, but I would prefer Sanchez gets someone who has made it further in the playoffs then Sanchez has! That means we should get a Super Bowl QB, and that only leaves a few people with that kind of experience.

My major concern is that Chad’s presence will disrupt the current team chemistry, and the day that Sanchez has an off game the “CHAD” fans will be calling for him to start. So I see no reason to bring him back to NY next season unless he is going to be a QB coach.

Everyone should remember one thing…. Chad has a weak arm and even though we are now a run oriented team, so we still need someone who can toss the rock further then 5 to 10 yards! Otherwise the opposing defenses will stack the box and make it harder on our backfield!

  7. i would rather he retire and we bring him in as a QB coach. he can help develop Ainge and O’Connell and hopefully we could trade one of those guys away

  8. What the F?????

I think people forget how flacky most Jet fans are…. 2 months ago alot of Jet fans were doubting and killing Sanchez….

Just imagine Sanchez throwing 3 picks against the Patriots next year with Pennington on the bench….OMG the fans would be screaming for #10 to come to the rescue.

Pennington on the bench behind this kid is not a good thing. If he is wearing a uniform I want him no where need this team….If he wants to be a coach. i would pick him up and drive him to Floram park

I love Chad and respected everything he did. I will remember the feeling I got when during his 2002 season. I was think Chad Montana years to come…. But do not call him until he retires and he can get his welcome during a halftime…..

  9. Brendan

I just saw your post……very true and very funny…lol

  10. Not for nothing, but how many Super Bowl winning quarterbacks are there are around who are currently looking to play backup?

I say if we can get Pennington to play backup, I’m all for it.

  11. I would much rather have Chad come on as a coach rather than a player.

  12. Jets = (Less) Misery:

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………ex-queeze me? baking powder? “Super Bowl winning quarterbacks” does not include Pennington. In fact, my biggest gripe with him is he’s a QB who can bring to the playoffs, but not get you to the promised land.

  13. how much does a QB coach or asst OC make? is it really that much less than what CP10 would get as a backup QB? I know the most difficult thing for an athlete to do is know when to hang it up. Chad is a smart dude – I hope he seriously considers retiring. There is still a boatload of money to be made in coaching, and this would really be an unbelievable opportunity for him.

  14. Brendan

not to speak for Misery but…..I think Misery was saying Chad is a good canidate for a back up as there are not any SB winning QB’s looking for backup jobs

I 10000% agree with your Pennington point. I wasnt a huge Favre fan but thought he was worth the risk since our ceiling with Chad as a starter was a 1st round playoff loss…

I do think Chad would be a good backup…..JUST NOT HERE!!!!

  15. That would be a great fit in Arizona, Noodle #1 being backed up by Noodle #2 Matt Leinart. I feel sorry for Boldin, Fitzgerald, and Breaston-take out insurance policies guys…as for him in New York? Please, no.

  16. Ah I guess I misread it. I dunno this is an awkward situation in the making if it happens, so I don’t want that kind of distraction heading into what should be a big year for the team.

  17. Cimini’s article is so filled with innuendo and half-truths, it’s almost laughable. Chad is saying what he needs to say to increase his value on the open market, and maybe to scare the Dolphins into giving him a new contract so that he won’t go back to the Jets. Meanwhile for Cimini to say that Tannenbaum released Pennington rather than trading him because he respected and liked Chad is ludicrous. It was all about the cap when Favre signed and Tannenbaum had no other choice.

I wouldn’t read much into this — especially since the Jets need to lose a free agent before they could even entertain this discussion, and it would prevent them from siging another UFA. Chad seems pretty bitter and it appears the Jets would be his last choice.

  18. Given the Jets’ restrictions on signing unrestricted free agents (UFAs), I think signing Pennington would be a mistake.

As I understand it, the only Jets UFAs will be James Dearth, Jay Feely, Larry Izzo, Marques Douglas, and Tony Richardson.

Of those guys, I’d prefer to only see James Dearth go. And that would mean we could only sign one UFA all offseason. I’d rather we sign a starter than a backup if we can only sign one.

(I’d be ok with Feely going, but if he goes you need to sign another kicker, so it doesn’t help our UFA situation unless you spend a draft pick or get a rookie free agent)

  19. Bill – if they don’t tender any of their RFAs, they will become UFAs too. Also by pulling out the rug on Lito’s extension, he is also a UFA for this purpose.

Your point is solid though. Remember, it’s not just about letting someone go, they have to be signed by another team too, so if the player released retires or doesn’t get signed, that won’t help in terms of signing UFAs.

  20. I want Chad to be on our team …but never play ? I love the guy and I truely think he is what has kept the Jets relevant. However, I don’t want someone with any history behind Sanchez to make the flaky fans get all wet when Sanchez throws a few picks looking for #10.

Also, Chad in Arizona makes NO sense….. don’t they throw the ball alot …..and deep ?

  21. i don’t think the possibility of “how the fans/media react to a sanchez 3 int game”should be a reason to or not to bring pennington on.

if sanchez goes down, we’re gonna want to have the best possible replacement we can.

i really doubt pennington come back to NY either way. its not like he’s ever been booed after an injury or kicked to the curb for favre……………however we would be lucky to get him

  22. The truth is I would only want Pennington back for one reason, to tutor Sanchez. No disrespect to Chad, but i dont want him taking snaps. This is Sanchez team now. I wouldn’t want any confusion on that.

  23. I don’t see Penny being anything other than a positive on this team. He know the system, knows NYC and most importantly at this point in his career, knows his role. He’s also very well respected by fellow players and would be a great influence in the clubhouse.

A lot of fans were calling for Clemens this year after Sanchez had a few meltdown games and it had the affect on Rex I thought it would, none. Sanchez is the QB of this team and the future. As a rookie, he led this team to within 30 minutes of the SB. The idea that any serious person would be calling for Penny if Sanchez had a bad game or two and that Ryan would listen strikes me as less credible than it was this past year.

  24. BRING BACK PENNINGTON!!!!

  25. Sanchez is a confident kid, but I wouldn’t want to do anything to destroy that confidence. Bringing back Chad could do that because it would be inevitable that certain fans and members of the media would call for Chad to start at some point. Look, let’s not kid ourselves, Chad was the dominant figure on the Jets from 2002 through 2007. And, his presence on the Dolphins hung over the Jets like a dark cloud the entire 2008 season. Chad has a huge base of support among Jets fans and he deserved it. Bringing him back would just complicate things for Sanchez and potentially retard his development. Look what Kurt Warner did to Leinart after Leinart’s very promising rookie season? And, Warner didn’t have a base of loyal fans. It’s the Sanchez era. If not, it’s like Leno (Chad)-Conan (Sanchez)…and look how that turned out!

  26. SD 99— Destroy Sanchez’s confidence??? Is that even possible?? He is one confident(cocky) kid.

After the season he had(especially the playoff run) everyone will know that Chad would play only in an emergency situation or mop-up role.

  27. make it happen, always and forever will be a fan of chad (minus the 2 years in stinkville)

  28. I wouldn’t read too much into this — Cimini is pushing this because it’s the off-season and he needs a “story” (i.e. manufactured controversy) to sell newspapers and drive readers to his blog.

It’s unlikely because Chad would not have a shot at the starter’s job at all — I think Rex proved that Sanchez is his guy, through thick and thin. It would also be detrimental to Sanchez for the reasons SackDance suggested. And I truly think after being unceremoniously dumped for Favre, there’s absolutely no desire to play for this franchise again. He said what he said to better position himself, but there’s a better chance of Vinny from Elmont signing as a backup than Chad.

That all being said, I’m definitely in the camp of “AFTER Chad retires and becomes a QB coach, then bring him back.” But not until then. The Jet has left the runway, so to speak.

  29. I think some of the people that are minimizing the problems that Chad being on the bench behind Sanchez can cause……are either really big Pennington fans or are giving the Jet fans way too much credit.

There are players and a ton fans (especially before the late season success of Sanchez) that still think Chad should be our starter. Chad might even still think that for all we know

I love Chad….but I have been screaming at the thought of this guy on our bench. Its just not good for the future of our young Qb and franchise.

Let him go win a few games in nice weather or a dome for a team and then come home to retire and we can applaude him at halftime in a few years.

Go get a decent vet QB that has ZERO thoughts of being a starter and pray we never has to see him throw a pass next year

  30. Drew — If someone said that they wanted to keep Ainge and O’connell that’s one thing but to pass on Chad for a different “decent vet QB” makes no sense to me. He is familiar with Schotty’s system and would be the ultimate team player.

  31. Two thoughts.

    1) Can the Jets get a better qualified QB to back up Sanchise? The answer is NO. Chad is a perfect one game replacement.

    2) Would chad being on the team help or hurt MS? I think it’s obvious that it could only help him. Chad is far to classy a guy to cause trouble, we’d basically be getting an extra QB coach who can play in a pinch.

It’s the perfect situation for the fans, Chad, and Mark.

Come home Chad, you welcome here anytime.

  32. you guys are crazy Chad is one of the most accurate Qb’s of all time check the stats…….you are not bringing him or any other backup and expecting them to get you to the playoffs…. But I must say this if we had chad instead of Farve we would of made the playoffs and we might not be sitting with Rex and Sanchez right now. For that alone we should reward him.

Chad would be able to take Sanchez under is wing and teach him to read the defenses better (clearly a weakness) and as for anyone lobbying for chad that is not the future of this club and the reality of it is half these guys were not even on the team 2 years ago.

I never thought I would say this but Bring back CHAD!!!

  33. He is only accurate because he tosses the rock 5 to 10 years at a time!

Hell anyone can do that! The only problem is dink and dunks do not win games!!

  34. I agree Chad should be rewarded for winning a 2nd comeback player of the year award and finishing 2nd in the MVP voting 2 years ago by having him go play with the Vikings or the Cardinals or Tampa or Carolina where the starter is not a certain to beat Chad out and he can play in a dome or warm weather for another few years and win some games before he retires.

He can be rewarded by Jet fans when he comes to the new stadium 5 years from now and get thanked at halftime.

I dont know the contracts of these guys but Leftwhich, K Collins, R Fitzpatrick, C Batch, even C Redman all can give us a 1 or 2 game lift if Sanchez ever got hurt…..and woul dnot have to deal with the Chad lovers calling for him if Sanchez has a bad game

  35. sorry 5 to 10 yards…

  36. A lot of people here are missing the point, that Sanchez would be the starter and Chad would be here as a back-up and a mentor role. He is perfect for that job, because he knows how to handle the media and tough situations with class and can teach Mark the value of a turnover.

This would be the perfect situation for everyone and the Jets should make that call ASAP.

  37. Can we bring him in as the QB coach? He would be a perfect mentor for MS. Otherwise, I think we can do better for a backup.

  38. maybe the if he comes back he can teach mark how to sell the playaction…noone is better than pennington at that pretty much everytime he does a playaction pass he fools the cameraman

  39. Guys, he would be a great fit here. With this defense, Chad could succeed very well. He is the master at not turning the ball over, and is great at play action. Bring him in knowing that he will be the back up next year, I think it would be great! Sign him in place of Larry Izzo and Dunta Robinson in place of Lito Sheppard.

  40. I love Chad and thought that he’d have a good year before the Favre trade. That said, I want no risk of doing anything that might. in ANY way, delay or god forbid, derail, Sanchez’ development.

Chad as a backup just poses a risk I’d rather not take. When he gives up his playing days, I’d love to see him here. Until then…..pass.

  41. Brian311,

I find myself agreeing with you all the time. We shouldn’t bring Chad in, until he is ready to coach. As a back-up QB, Chad will be concerned about competing and becoming the starter because, he is a very competitive guy and he still wants to play. We already have a QB coach so, it wouldn’t be Chad’s responsibility to tutor Sanchez, Ainge, & O’Connell, anyway.

I can’t see him lasting much longer as a player, as his arm is chopped meat. As soon as he decides to hang it up, the Jets should reach out to him, for the QB Coach’s job, with the intent of grooming him for the Offensive Coordinator’s job. By that time, Schotzy will have a HC job and we can start dominating on the Offensive side of the ball.

  42. If Chad would come back for a reasonable $, then we should take him. I hear the concerns above, but he is just to smart and could help Mark in so many ways. Plus, when Mark gets dinged, as he did this season, I’ll feel comfortable with Chad playing a couple of games.

  43. Lets face it, Chad has had not one but THREE shoulder surgeries and he was pretty short armed to begin with. Who is going to risk him as a starter? I think Arizona is a good fit for Chad because Leinart is shaky, and the Dolphins are in the drivers seat to sign him, but we aren’t far behind.

We have found our franchise QB. Sanchez has already proven himself as the starter. If Chad comes back he will be a backup. There is no question there.

If he comes here, Chad is only a band aid if Sanchez gets hurt. This isn’t a Jeff Hostettler or Kurt Warner situation. He cannot take a team on his back anymore. He also isn’t going to get a huge contract given his injury history. He is at the tail end of his career, but he knows Schottenheimer’s system well and can serve as a mentor to Sanchez, especially when dealing with the NY media and halftime adjustments.

Most of those other FA QBs out there (Leftwich, Redman, et al.) are perennial backups that have proven nothing with the exception of Kerry Collins who is the other viable FA option I would consider.

  44. Let’s remember why Chad was let go. Bradway signed him to a big money, 6 year, backloaded contract that he did not live up to due to injury. They kept extending the deal, lowering the cap number year after year and tacking more onto the end of the contract so they could sign free agents. It got to the point where his cap number was killing us and he kept getting hurt. When the opportunity for Favre came up, it gave the Jets an option to end the contract and stop the bleeding. Now that Favre is gone, we have drafted a new #1 QB and if we brought Chad back, it wouldn’t be for $12 million per year. If we had not sogned Favre, Chad would still be our QB but I don’t think we would have been in the same position (i.e. playoffs), especially since he hurt his shoulder again in Miami. Clearing his cap number paved the way for Rex’s FA signings from Baltimore and that is what made the difference for us.

  45. I just don’t agree with all the people who think that Chad would be a great coach/mentor for Sanchez. I don’t see enough crossover in terms of style, skill set, prototype to believe that what worked for Chad would be useful to Sanchez. He and MS are cut from a totally different cloth. I have tremendous respect for Pennington for overachieving in spite of physical limitations, but trying to turn MS into another Chad would just be limiting his upside.

  46. Subway,

You are the one who is saying that Chad should turn Sanchez into his clone. Chad is a brilliant guy with a solid knowledge of the position, reading defenses, and offensive football. In addition, he has come from a team that features the Wildcat. Just because a coach played a certain way does not mean that is all he has to offer.

  47. Harvlis

    I couldn’t agree more.

  48. Whoever said we should turn MS into Chad?

They may not be the same type of player, but Chad can certainly teach MS a thing or two about being an NFL QB. Chad was very adept at moving the chains and getting into the endzone. Chad was also a master at Playaction Fakes, which seems to be MS’s bread and butter also.

CP is the consummate professional, and can be a good coach/mentor for MS.

  49. Didn’t Chad learn a lot from Vinny? They couldn’t be much more different. Just saying…

  50. I think the fans here that don’t think that at some point the fans and media would be calling for Chad to start over Sanchez are fooling themselves. How about if Sanchez gets hurt, Chad takes over for 2 games and goes 2-0 and when Sanchez comes back, he struggles? That the problem with the NFL, there’s no margin for error and our impatient fanbase wouldn’t want to see a 2nd year QB struggle and lose a winnable game, especially with the 2nd greatest QB in Jets history. Plus, we know Chad is a competitor and would want to start. Chad has never lost a pre-season QB competition, even with his weak arm and lack of mobility. Like the Pack with Aaron Rodgers, eventually a team has to cut the cord with a former franchise QB that was the face of the franchise. And, even the most confident guy on earth can have that confidence shaken. Having Chad around would be an unmitigated disaster for the Jets and call into question their $50 million investment in Sanchez. There are plenty of back up or potential back up QBs that could step in for a game or 2 and play competently. We don’t need to rely on a guy who was the face of the franchise and team leader for 6 seasons. I really don’t see this as even a close call. No Chad, no way!

  51. Didn’t Chad learn a lot from Vinny? They couldn’t be much more different. Just saying…

I do see both sides of this argument. A lot would depend on Chad’s mindset. If he wants to be a starter, forget it.

  52. *especially with the 2nd greatest QB in Jets history on the bench. Sorry, my typing sucks today.

  53. SD99 – I see your points, like I said I think both sides can make a case. I do think saying it would be an “unmitigated disaster” is a bit over the top though.

Let’s say that Kerry Collins comes here and the same scenario you described occurs: Sanchez gets hurt, Collins plays awesome for 2 games, Sanchez comes back and sucks. The fans and media will complain then, too. I realize that Penny’s history here makes it a little different, but I don’t think the end result will change all that much no matter who the backup is if that scenario unfolds. It’s the nature of the NFL beast, the backup is always better. That is why so many fans:

    * wanted Clemens in 07 after he looked better in preseason games than Chad did
    * wanted Ratliff in ‘08 because of his bombs against 3rd and 4th stringers in preseason
    * clamored for Ainge this season when Sanchez was struggling, after his preseason showing against scrubs

If Sanchez struggles much, they’ll want whoever the backup happens to be.

  54. NYC PE,

I just don’t think you can compare Collins to Chad. Most fans remember 2002 really well and have that season frozen in their minds. They believe that Chad can be that QB again. And, every season that Chad has been healthy, he’s led his team to the playoffs. Chad would get the back up love to the 10th power. So, while it may strike you as hyperbolic, getting Chad back, IMO, would be “an unmitigated disaster.” New coach, new QB, new era. I don’t want to revisit the past, especially if it could potentially harm our new franchise QB.

  55. I am against bring Chad back…… and gfor the record I dont think Chad learned much from Vinny

Vinny was a great thrower of the football…he had every tool in the shed to be a great QB other than actually being able the read a defense on a consistent basis…..

What he did learn by watching Vinny prepare to be a starting QB…

Chad would come here and want to play…thats the facts….to minimize the fans and Chad’s heart to play is not being fair

Let the guy go play in a warm weather climate where he has a shot to succeed and then retire

    Then we can thank him

  56. and I think SD99 is not saying the smart Jet fan will call for Chad at the first sign of Sanchez struggles…the problem is most Jet fans are not great fans…they just arent

  57. and I said this the last time this came up this morning at 10:00 am when this post started….it is just to be of a risk to work in my book

  58. Chad is an overachiever from a small school, who succeeded primarily by playing within his limitations and avoiding mistakes. The little engine that could. His puppy-like enthusiasm and team commitment were extremely valuable to the Jets at that point in their history, lifting them out of yet another period of darkness. He should be lauded and remembered for that, but the Jets are a different team now with a totally different identity. Sanchez, a brash, confident star from the college game’s biggest program, fits what Ryan is transforming the Jets into now and I don’t think Chad really has anything to add to that.

I expected to get flamed for this opinion but it’s nothing more than one person’s point of view.

  59. subway

I agree he shouldnt be back……. but I will say that Penny before the 1st injury he was a really good QB not really an overachiever from a small school…..Marshall had him and Randy Moss running college football for a year or so…

There are just way too many Pennington fans in the stands and in the media……not to cause problems at the first sign of struggles (which are coming in year 2) from Sanchez

The Pennington years were a great run ……fans please just let them die in peace and we can thank him at a much later date

  60. I just heard Sanchez on WFAN. He said that, “at the end of the season, Schotty realized that he could throw the ball on the run and then gave him some plays”,

As I have been saying all season — Schottenheimer is totally out of touch. Most fans that I hang with were pretty sure, at the beginning of the season, that Schotty should have had Sanchez roll out more often. And, Shonn Greene can run, and Clowney is a weapon, and Keller is our best short weapon, and Leon should have run the ball more than 3x a game in 2008, etc…

Rex, I know you realize this — ditch the kid!!!!!!

  61. If B-Schott didnt know he could throw ont he run then he never watched Sanchez play at USC or bothered to read a draft profile on the kid coming out of school.

Its only the thing he does best as a QB

Oh Brian…please tell me Sanchez mis-spoke…lol

  62. Chad agreeing to come to the Jets as a backup would likely be the de-facto start of his coaching career, even though he would be available to play (and he would be much better paid while still an active player). I don’t believe a “quick hook” would be used on Sanchez with Chad or any other quality veteran backup. Chad’s first preference is to stay in Miami because he probably has his eye on the Offensive Coordinator’s job once Dan Henning retires. Well, the same scenario may exist with the Jets if B. Schottenheimer accepts a head coaching position in the not-too-distant future. I don’t know how much the ability to compete for a starting job will weigh in Chad’s decision-making process right now. His priority may be to provide for his family as best he can while not moving around too much over the next few years. Time will tell.

  63. PEN—-NY, PEN—-NY, PEN—-NY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. Drew,

Francesa was actually complimenting Sanchez on the throws he made on the run, in the Playoffs, and Sanchez said exactly what I stated. Schotty realized he could do this at the END of the season and then created some plays for him. This is similar to Brad Smith throwing the ball out of the Wildcat. Schotty waited until the Championship game, to give that a try.

  65. If Chad came back, Id greet him at the airport and cheer his return

Not a big arm, but a huge heart and brain, true Jet, would rather have Chad calling the plays than Schotty…lol

  66. i wouldn’t really classify pennington as an over achiever, he was drafted in the first round.

someone posted this from above and i thought this was a great point. – how is there gonna be a huge difference between the fans calling for clemons or pennington?

  67. Sorry guys chad’s not coming to the JETS, he still wants to be a starter and sanchez is our starter. I also dont think sanchez needs chads shadow creepin around in the backround w the media attention he would get coming back. Sanchez is our guy lets forget about Chad (where did my arm strength go) Pennington.

  68. FOR ANYONE THAT THINKS CHAD PENNINGTON WILL NOT BE THE BEST BACK UP FOR THE NEW YORK JETS THEN YOUR NOT A TRUE NEW YORK JETS FAN. DO ANY OF YOU CLOWNS REMEMBER WHAT KIND OF QB’S THIS TEAM HADE FOR THE LAST 40 YR’S? CHAD BROUGHT LIFE TO THIS FRANCHISE HE GAVE JETS FAN’S HOPE AND HE BROUGHT US TOO MORE PLAYOFF GAMES THEN ANY OTHER JETS QB. PLUS IF THAT SELFESH # 4 DIDN’T COME INTO TOWN LIKE A SHORT STORM . THEN WE ALL KNOW # 10 WOLD STILL BE A JET LIKE HE SHOULD BE FOREVER.. I WILL ALWAYS THINK OF CHAD PENNINGTON AS THE 2ND BEST NEW YORK JETS QB.. BRING HIM HOME AND GIVE HIM THE BACK UP JOB AND ON FIELD COACH.. WE ALL KNOW HE WILL BE A COACH IN THIS LEAGUE SOON ANYWAY.. AND DONT FORGET IT WAS #10 WHO BEAT PEYTON MANNING 41-0 IN THE PLAYOFF’S!!!!!!!

  69. I’ll say again, I have great admiration for Pennington. He has tremendous heart and character and gave the Jets everything he had, in spite of his physical limitations. I’m grateful for the wins he helped to engineer, but I just don’t think he fits in with the current team and the new identity that Ryan is building. Ryan’s approach is more brash, aggressive and risk tolerant. I think Sanchez should be given the opportunity to develop and grow his own style within that environment, without the shadow of an all-time fan favorite – with a very different skill-set and approach – hanging over him.

  70. personally i love chad, but that ship has sailed. the new era of a new Jets team has come and this is Sanchez’s team. i don’t want chad back unless hes a coach and after Sanchez has been in the league a few years. like i said, this is a new era of Jets football.

  71. Hey Alex RELAX, we all loved chad while he was here. I still have his jersey. But his time is done and now its sanchez’s time to shine. It would be stupid to think bringing chad back would be a good idea. Do you really think Rex is thinking of bringing this guy in. Shotty helped Chad and Drew Brees develop i think he doesn’t need Chad in Sanchez’s ear. The truth is Sanchez brought this team further then Chad ever did annd sure he beat the Colts 41-0 but he also was the guy that lost to the Raiders 42-0…c’monnn.

  72. i agree alex but that day ( 41-0) was the electricity from the fans. nobody would have beaten us that day.

  73. #1- There is no qb in the world who is decent and has no designs on starting. idk where you think this person exists

#2- The Jets need a better backup QB. If you’re still hanging onto dreams of Clemens, i can’t even talk to you. He is not a viable QB.

#3-Who cares what the fans/media say?

All of which is to say, hey maybe Chad is a fit here. Not that I think it will happen, but it seems the two biggest requirements for any backup you bring in are A) Is he going to run the offense better than KC? and B) Could he possibly help Sanchez’s development?

You tell me who fits that bill better than CP, and is available/affordable.

  74. Chad is a True Jet! I am very grateful for the way he played and lead us into the playoffs. AND YES… Winning a few special Playoff games.

Lets NOT ever forget that Jets fans. If the Jet defense had been stronger at stoping the run or if John Abraham actually stayed healthy in those playoff years then maybe the Jets would have been in a championship game or in the Superbowl.

    Thank You Chad!

Yes… I would love to see Chad come back to the Jets as our backup QB and down the road as a coach if he chooses to be a coach.

He is only accurate because he tosses the rock 5 to 10 years at a time!

I think you forget all the deep balls for touch downs or near touch downs to Santana Moss. Even One in a Playoff win with an injured shoulder that required surgery! Yes he hit Moss at his full speed right on the money!

Also all those 20 to 30 yard passes to Wayne all over the field.

All of those passes thrown perfectly!!!!!!

I don’t think you people have watched every play of every Jet games in those years or you were too Drunk to see the plays or remember what happened the next day!

  76. jon in bk,

Ainge and O’Connell might be two good back-ups but, Shottenheimer has done absolutely nothing with our back-ups. I thought Ainge looked real good, this past pre-season. I loved Pennington but, he didn’t have much of an arm prior to his recent surgery.
