If Sanchez thinks that having Penny come in as his backup would be “huge”, “awesome”, “a joy”, and it could “only help us”, I think we can put the question of whether or not Penny would be a disruptive force to bed. Because of his background, there is no other player who could provide the specific veteran mentoring that Penny could bring to this team. He would also be a great role model and teacher for O’Connell or Ainge or both if they both stick.
This has nothing to do with being a fan of Penny or not, this is about picking the best person to fill a specific need. Penny would be a great addition to the team and if it can be pulled off it should be done.

he made these statemetns publically, i wonder what he really thinks.
i do howver think from the organiztions point of view, this is a great move for the JETS, even more so if what sanchez is asying here is really what he believes.
i hate gary myers worse than francessa!

BRING BACK CP10!!!!!
-
Sebastian Janikowski is a FA how about move Feely to punter he did pretty good against the Bengals.
Yall like that idea -
I will say this for the last time….. I was a huge Pennington fan and I understand the fact that he “could” provide leadership and “possibly” mentor Sanchez but…….
IMO Pennington and (alot of fans) still feel he has unfinished business as a Jet. Pennington can say all he wants about his future role……. but he still feels he is a starting NFL QB. I mean the guy did finish 2nd in MVP voting 2 years ago.
There is a risk factor that I am not willing to take with the ex fan favorite, franchise QB sitting behind Sanchez that alot of fans doubted 2 months ago.
There are other guys that has zero connection to this franchise that could come in and do the same job if not better than Chad could….. Guys who had been starters and now are clearly backups that can provide a lift for a game or so in case of an injury…… mean we did win a game with KC playing awful so is a “great” back up needed anyway??
This is a new era for the New York Jets….Pennington is still in the hearts of alot of fans, media even a few players on the team. Let him go elsewhere and attempt to play (in a warm climate or a dome) where he has a shot to keep playing.
Then in a few years he can get his thanks from the Jet fans as a retired player at halftime
-
What about Charlie Batch??
-
On another note ESPN is reporting the Browns are releasing Donte Stallworth. Anything the Jets should look into?
-
I am not a Stallworth fan and he has a ton of off the field issues but…..
He could be a good slot WR and will come pretty cheap.
Might not be worht the headache though
brightfuture
A guy like Charile Batch would be perfect for this team

@ Levi
Ya, I hear he’s still got the strength to run defenders down. Hiyo…is this thing on?
As far as the Super Bowl being played here: I think it’d be great. I don’t even care if it’s here in Nj, just in any cold weather stadium. I think it’s such bs that its always warm. Some teams are built to play in cold weather because of their locations, and get kinda screwed by the super bowl. It’s not even that, but I just think it would make the game more interesting.

@Dirty6 to soon
Drew
I agree about with you about Penny. Myself I would like to see Jeff Garcia brought in he ans Sanchez have similiar game.
I would think Stalworth has been humbled after accidentally killing someone but I guess you never know. Still just a thought.
-
Hey Drew;
You don’t have to worry about Pennington comming to the Jets…He is not!11
He was just asked if he would consider it and like a smart, considerate person he is , he answered yes. He would not close any doors because in the NFL “you could find yourself on the outside looking in”.
He also said it would be a ” very difficult emotional decision” to return to the Jets….. looks like the SCARS still run deep….. and that he is happy with the “Phins AND the coaches and that his family is very happy in Miami.Thigpen and White are NOT the answers in Miami, and Sperano has made it known that the QB spot is still open for competition. Parcells LOVES Penningotn and still owns his contract. No way Parcells will let him go.
Pennington is also being “chased” by other teams. This is much like the same situation like Taylor last year, only Taylor is NOT as diplomatic as Chad and expressed exactly how he felt.
As long as there is ANY hope of Pennington staying with the “Phins in any capacity, (Sperano is on record that he LOVES bouncing ideas with Chad…..AKA Coaching) I believe if he can’t start, he will stay as an advisor/asst. coach!!

Levi:
The decision to releasy Dante is not final yet!! The Browns will have to decide within a few weeks, they’r actully waiting for Lerner to sin in and decide.
Stallworth has made an honest and complete act of contrition and I’m sure Mangini will give him a second chance, but nothing is decided.
As far as comming to the Jets, it will only help as much as it will help his best friend Bray-Bray. Donte has much better hands but is not a #1 receiver.
I know Donte has learned his lesson well, maybe he can be a positive influence on Edwards!!!
-
Correction:
“…..they’r actully waiting for Lerner to sin in and decide”
The word is ACTUALLY,,,,,,,,,,and SIT in and decide. -
hank
I didnt think it would happen…My post are more towards the legion of fans that think it would be a good idea for Chad to “sit” behind Sanchez.
As to Stallworth. He has had mulitple problems outside of the latest incident (which he was drinking with Braylon) by the way. He was in the substance abuse program before the lastest accident but he has paid his price and deserves a chance to play this year …
He is a good veteran slot WR and would add a element that this team dosent have….especially on 3rd downs but to say that you “know” he has learned his lesson or that he would be a positive influence on Edwards is pretty silly.
-
hank/naples,
I agree with your take on Pennington. Chad is a classy guy, and wouldn’t say anything negative about the organization. But to be honest, the Jets are not a good option for him. He will probably stay in Miami, but if not I could see him going to Arizona, St Louis, Cleveland, or somewhere else where he could compete for a starting job. If Chad DID agree to come here, I would sign him in a second. People talk about how he could be such a great mentor, but lets not forget he can be a pretty good PLAYER as well. If Sanchez goes down, I would be much more confident in Pennington than I would in Clemens. As far as Stallworth, I think that would be a low risk signing. He could play in the slot, and he would also give us another nice deep threat. I think he could be a good fit for the Jets. Signing him would also allow us to shift all of our focus to defense in the draft.
-
Chad is a True Jet! I am very grateful for the way he played and lead us into the playoffs. AND YES… Winning a few special Playoff games.
Lets NOT ever forget that Jets fans. If the Jet defense had been stronger at stoping the run or if John Abraham actually stayed healthy in those playoff years then maybe the Jets would have been in a championship game or in the Superbowl.
Thank You Chad!
Yes… I would love to see Chad come back to the Jets as our backup QB and down the road as a coach if he chooses to be a coach.
-
If his arm is anywhere near where it was when he left, then absolutely, we have to bring him back given the chance. Thats not a given by any means though.
-
Erik
My vote is I dont think he’s finished but I dont want him here
-
Bent
I dont think I have the stomach for alot of Jet fans that would be calling for Chad if Sanchez had a bad game. I am not talking about the % of Jet fans that actually have a brain……..but there are far too many fair weather Jet fans that still think Chad has unfinished business here and would call for #10 if and when Sanchez struggles next year……. I can already see the back page of the Post calling for it to happen and then a poll for the fans to vote if Chad should start the following week……..Chad’s time in Green and White are over…….
-
Bent:
You are right !! I apologize. Lost a year there somewhere. The age, you know, time does fly faster as you ngrow older.
-
You know, Drew:
If Franchez gets hurt, who are you gonna call?
do you know any one else that knows the Jets ofense, players and system better?
-
Bent:
If you want me to autograph it I will. It’ll be worth ton$ in the future.
-
Bent:
And furthermore….. Re: your post of 5:18 PM. You and Drew don’t sound to confident in our Franchez to take….us…..all…..the…..wayyyyy!!!!
-
Hey Manassey:
Totally SLANTED poll. What IF You don’t want Chad back BUT he is NOT finished?
-
Dylan:
Lomg time!!.
Completely agree on your take, I I too believe Pennington will not leave Miami. If Stallworth leaves Cleveland, it will not be Mangini that makes ultimate decision. Always enjoyed our discourse.
-
In Chad’s ideal world, I believe he would like to stay in Miami as Chad Henne’s backup and mentor. His best opportunity to provide for his family is as a player, and this may not come from the Dolphins. His best opportunity to compete for a starting job may come from Arizona, but he may not want to disrupt his family even for this sort of opportunity.
From another point of view, Chad’s best chance at some (paycheck) longevity as a player would be as a backup, as this would limit his exposure for the career-ending injury that is bound to happen sooner or later. His income would certainly take a major hit if he were to retire to become a QB coach. As the Jets’ backup QB and de-facto QB coach, Chad may have the best opportunity to provide for his family while laying the groundwork for his coaching career.
-
Can CP play defensive end? If so, sign him…
No, he can’t?Well, chad… Loved ya when you were here.. still wear the #10 occasionally in your honor.. Good luck in your next stage of life.. just try and not get hurt.. ok? (pats him on the back)
-
Hank?
I am confused where I give the impression I dont have confidence in Sanchez? Its a fact that there will be some struggles in year 2 of Sanchez’s career…..Just like every QB………What I dont have confidence in (and there is proof every year) is in my fellow Jet fans and the media that is always looking for a QB battle with starter and backup. A few off games from Sanchez and a guy like you would be screaming for #10 to be called in to “save” us….and you wouldnt be the onyl one.
As to your question as to a QB I would like……I dont know all of the contracts of these guys but a Charlie Batch, Charlie Frye, Chris Redman…..these guys have already been established as “backups” and can come in and win a game in a pinch or a hold the fort for a quarter or so..
Its not a question to if they are better than Pennington….is whats better for this team in 2010 and future of the current QB.
-
Hey Drew:
I asked a rhetoical question: Do you know of another QB that knows the Jets better than Pennington?
Sorry that I assumed that no one knows the Jets Better and therefore gives them a perfect , in-lock step, chance to lead the team without missing a beat, in case, just in case, Franchez goes down!!!
Personaly I think you are a little bit shell shocked from all the QB battles and still somewhat unsure if Franchez is the ONE to lead us to the promise land. I assure you that I would not be a fan like you said..”would be screaming for #10 to be called in to “save” us.
As far as I’m concerned, my interest with Chad’s connection with the Jets ended when they signed Farve and threw Pennington under the bus!!!
-
sanchez did not lose the afc championship game our defense did……………….. period ended!!!!!
-
I saw the kid I have defended all year play his 3 best games in the playoffs…. I am 100% confident he is the QB of my team for the future.
-
PROS: Turning our young QB into Chad mentally with lights out natural ability. AND we guarantee he is not passing his mental savviness to Henne.
CONS: reality is that back-up most likely plays 1-2 games and our offense would have to completely change as defenses pinch the field and certain passing plays cannot be called because Chad cannot deliver ball as far and as fast as Sanchez
-
I AGREE WITH DREW BUT MAN O MAN JUST IMAGINE PENNY TELLING CHEZ EVERYTHING HE KNOWS AND NOT TO MENTION PENNY IS A NERD WHEN IT COMES TO FOOTBALL. SIGN STALLWORTH DONT DRAFT ANY RECIVERS ALL PICKS ON D AND OL

I think it would be great for Sanchez’s development to have Chad Pennington mentoring/coaching him as the #2. Seems like a pipe dream, but it would be great if this actually happens.
