Prospect Watch: WR Golden Tate

By E. Weeks on 07. Feb, 2010

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Golden Tate.

The Good: Tate possess great vision and has great speed. He is very agile and has great hands along with great body control. He can explode off the line and often force defenses into situations where they will need help to take down Tate. He possess the skills to be a great NFL receiver and with Cotch and Edwards in the fold, Tate would only make the Jets receivers much more difficult to deal with.

The Bad: His route running needs improvement of course he has come a long way after switching from the running back position. He will occasionally lose focus and will drop the ball (might want to keep him away from Braylon). Tate doesn’t enjoy blocking much and needs to improve (might want Braylon to help him there).

The Bottom Line: Tate is a very speedy receiver that could be another weapon added to Sanchez’s arsenal. He would be a nightmare for defense’s and would help the Jets with their “Ground and Pound” mentality though I’m sure they are going to try and balance out the offense a bit more next season. Despite the small flaws, Tate would be a great addition and quite a few mock drafts have the Jets taking Tate at 29. While he would be a great pickup, the Jets have other needs to consider and the Jets may pass on Tate even if he is still around.

Below are some of Tate’s highlights:

personally im a little biased as a notre dame fan but i think if the jets could get a pass rusher is free agency and they have feel that they can still get a good corner in the second round… i think golden tate would be a great weapon to add to the offense the guy makes plays and would be a great slot guy for sanchez to throw too and the best thing about tate is his versatility imo

At this point, I’d say find an NFC team (or the Browns) that picked early in the first that wants to get back into that round and try to pick up a 2nd and 3rd pick. I don’t see how we can have a successful draft without stock piling picks this year.

East Side, I totally agree with you. We are handcuffed in free agency and can use all the picks we can get.
I think the #29 pick can get us back a mid to early 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder maybe a 3rd.
This draft has a lot of depth as a lot of players declared for the draft to beat the new CBA.

Not a fan of Tate.. lack of seperation, and a little short.. Unless he’s a DeShawn Jackson clone, i say “pass on him”

Do not want a WR in the first 2 rounds but I do like Golden. I think he actually made Jimmy Clausen a first round pick.

Alot of Steve Smith in his game……Good player

i wish we had a couple extra picks this year…but 1st rd we should either go pass rusher or backup to jenkins…i wish gholston would of at least showed a little improvement this year so we could of gambled on him next year and not pick a pass rusher in the 1st rd but he didnt even come close to that

How about this idea. Draft Brandon Graham in the first round. Trade Rhodes for for an early 2 and 4. Then with the early to draft Cox. Next with our late 2 we draft Shipley. And then in the third draft a safety to replace Rhodes. It will take care if all 3 of our needs, plus we have another pick to get some depth.

I’m not sure about this guy’s skills, but I am sure that his name certainly keeps coming up with the NYJ at pick 29. A plus to having Tate on the board when the Jets pick will also be that he carries “a known name” and some teams may be more encouraged to go trade back to get him because their local beat writers have heard of him.
I don’t think the pick would be as bad as most do, but it all depends whose on the board. Remember, above all developing Sanchez into a stud is the greatest thing that could happen to this team, and maybe another WR could help with that.

How many times does Clowney have to tear up the preseason before we start using him as that speedy receiver. Keep thinking about drafting one, and we have one who has shown great talent.

If Brandon Graham and the kid out of Penn State are gone when we go on the clock I would trade out of the first round and get some picks. I do like Golden Tate though

Love the dive into the marching band. That alone is worth the price of admission, but honestly, I don’t think the Jets will take a receiver in the first round this year.

No thanks – for a team that hopefully will lead the league in rushing / rush attempts, we are set at receiver with Edwards, J-Co, Keller and Leon. There are much bigger needs on the defensive side of the team

Since we need more help on the offensive side of the ball it would seem prudent ot improve there, but I think it’s better to truly dominate with our defense than improve our offense.

I do believe that a best available player philosophy is a good one, but all things being equal, I’m in favor of somebody who can improve our pass rush.

We need a pass rusher and corner first priority. But i think if tates available at 29 we take him but if not we can sit on the reciever idea for a while. A corner would be our best pick. Lowery gets beat n hes too small. we need another physiical corner. There are plenty of good reciever in the draft every year and alot of the time the best recievers develop from middle rounds.

Just saw Shipley in the college all star competition he is the real deal easily the next wes welker i say cornerback first round then if shipley is there in the second get him if not get a pass rusher

yea hes ok but if the jets like him they could get him in the second round. He will NOT be a 1st rd pick. But id take gillyard or parish cox and shipley over him. Another words TRADE DOWN!!! We need another third or fourth rd pick

Tate in the right system would be an 85 catch 1250 yard WR every year

why spend a first round for a rookie WR….. name one rookie WR worth something besides jackson……….if we r going to spend a first rounder on a WR ( which i totally disagree with) why not Marshal…..

If Tate is in the 2nd round we have to take him.. He is a little small but is very strong and got the quickness and elusiveness to make the big plays and catches… He adds another weapon for sanchez and our offense will b able to score more points than the other team while our defense does what they do best! Can’t wait for the draft, it will be a sucessful 1 no matter what direction the jets decide to take, this is a very good draft class and has many good players

    brightfuture,

I saw the same thing and came to the same conclusion. Jordan Shipley is the real deal. I’d love to be able to take Brandon Graham with #1, and Shipley with #2. That would be an awesome draft!!

Find another Wes Welker like wide receivers…I wonder if that Edellmen kid up in NE is available…….We don’t have a great route runner that moves the chains, reeks havoc, etc……Clowney is just a speedster, nothing more. You don’t have to blow a first round pick to get a great passrusher anymore……I fear rushers in the first round…….when was there a good one since Ware and Merriman?

I can’t see the value in this contemplation. We need 2 corners with our top picks.

After that we need a quick defensive end.

Wide receiver therefore is very low on the list.

    Gregory,

Excuse me, but um….TWO corners? We have one of those corner positions filled currently, little guy that goes by the name Revis Christ.

BTW, trading back from our pick (depending on the team) nets us early 2nd & late3rd/early 4th, if they choose to trade out.

Trading Rhodes and drafting a “replacement” in the 3rd round isn’t wise. Just because we found Rhodes in the 4th round doesn’t mean we can strike gold with a playmaking safety in the mid-to-late rounds.

Tate is a good player, Rex would surely appreciate the kid’s toughness. But I’ll echo the general sentiment on this thread though and say he’s a luxury not a necessity. We have more glaring needs, and using a first on a luxury is something this team, as close to being elite as it is, can’t afford to do. The Jets are only a few pieces away from being elite, but those pieces are huge ones. Pass rushing DE/OLB and 2nd corner are vital to our team’s success. Having Tate battle with B. Smith and Clowney for reps in the slot, is not.

I think our WR corps is adequate. We have Edwards, Cotch, and Keller, all of whom are fantastic receivers. In the end, its going to be on Sanchez to move the ball, not the receivers. I think our top picks are better spent on pass-rushers and DBs. The AFC is a pass-happy conference, and we need to be able to neutralize that. I think our offense is fine as long as Sanchez keeps maturing. Our defense needs to stay on top, though for the Jets gameplan to work.

Have to agree with Shamik on draft needs. A D-Lineman with Pass Rushing skills, a Pass rushing line backer & A D–Back should be the priority. with the DB at #2 if the quality available is high.. It will be interesting to see if the rumors of trying to salvage (sounds crazy when applied to a 2nd year player) Vernon Gholston’s career as a Defensice lineman will pan out. The early season workouts will be revealing.
